Guest Reviews
- Luis (10/5): Good value - Awesome location 360 beautiful view
- Warner (8/5): - Las instalaciones La comida
- Luis (9/5): - La vista Las lámparas de mesitas de noche no funcionan.
- Guest (1/5): Miserable, left after one night. - Mold on screens & around door, no a/c, rusted door hinges & lock, Beer bottles from prior residents left on patio, trash left in bins, breakfast not included
- Guest (6/5): It was ok for the budget. - The location on top of the hills was great. Great views of the valley all the way to San Jose This hotel is dated. The furniture needs to be replaced
- Zahira (7/5): - La tranquilidad del lugar Reservamos equipado con cocina, pero los utensilios para preparar alimentos demasiado malos hay muy pocos y de muy mala calidad
- Alissa (1/5): Do Not Stay! - Amazing views! The rooms were horrible- black mold and rust covering the walls, TV only had very fuzzy cable channels, the remote didn’t work and the WiFi also didn’t work. We didn’t even stay the night. The mold and filth was so bad it was a health hazard.
- Guest (7/5): - Uitzicht, locatie goed ik een andere kamer kreeg na klacht over zeer veel mieren en bugs vliegen zonder dat er ramen open standen. Alles was half veel stuk in de kamers en vies.
- Joseph (2/5): - The view up top was very nice especially at night. There was very little else that we enjoyed at this hotel. There was no lock to the balcony door which left us feeling unsafe. There was no showerhead in the bathroom, but a pipe coming out the the wall that poured water on us. The soap dispenser was broken and also empty leaving us with no body wash. The restaurant, advertised to stay open until 10, closed at 8. There were insects on the floor when we arrived. Since it was pretty late, we felt like we had no options but left first thing in the morning. Not a positive experience.
- Jill (8/5): - The views are amazing and the staff is warm and friendly. The kitchenette was poorly lit and too small to be truly useful for more than refrigerator a few items and making coffee.
- Gary (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful views and excellent restaurant with reasonable prices and interesting menu We decided to stay an extra night.Nice place great vibe. Need new pillows.
- Evan (8/5): Anniversary trip and it didn’t disappoint. - The views are some of the best in all of Costa Rica. No A/C was rough at first, but with open windows and rainy season it was manageable.
- Gerard (10/5): Exceptional - Stunning view, convenient drive to airport, great breakfast. No AC in rooms but didn’t need it in May. Great value.
- Kristina (8/5): Very good - Location and staff was perfect! Very attentive, very caring It’s quite old needs little refurbishing
- David (5/5): Passable - Size of the room
View from the restaurant Breakfast TOO expensive price vrs served was ridiculius
Time to serve breakfast not accomplished. They ask to reserve breakfast but dont care dont respext the hour.
I asked for it to be 7.30... the serve it 8.10 - unaaceptable
Room was full FULL of insects.
The person hesitate they dont manage people to attend cause there is not clients. So if you go and the hotel ia empty just expect REALLY BAD SERVICE
- Maria (7/5): Excellent views but need maintenance - The views are incredible and they are pet friendly The bathroom was falling apart, the sheets had a smell and the room needs maintenance
- Bruce (9/5): Incredible view, great staff, excellent breakfast - Great view - pleasant staff - good breakfast Nothing
- Douglas (10/5): Relaxing stay - Love the location , view , and great food in the restaurant Nothing
- Douglas (10/5): Barons is my go to in Costa Rica - Location, view, restaurant. Nothing
- White (10/5): Exceptional - The view from the balkony was amazing.
Pool was an extra bonus. Rooms vere clean, and kitchenette was well equipped. Nothing
- William (10/5): Beautiful view and nice accommodations - Location overlooking the hillsides and city Steep driveway and limited parking unless you go to overflow parking
- Jim (8/5): It is a great place to wake up in. - I really like Barons. It has some quirks and eccentricities but I have stayed there twice and stay there again. If you’re looking for a perfect place it might not be for you but I love going there and having my morning coffee where I can look out over the valley.
- Oleg (8/5): Very good -
- John (9/5): Will keep this at the top of my list for visiting again. - Baron's Resort is the best lodging (and dining) value I have experienced in Costa Rica. Unbelievable views. Very comfortable rooms--recommendable restaurant.
- Susan (10/5): We are so pleased with this amazing property….this little haven astop the mountain cloud forest is a cool relief from th - What an incredible find. Amazing 360 degree views of beautiful mountains atop Atenas. Very lush, green. This is a quality resort, an amazing value.
Dinner was the best we have had so far in our 2 weeks in CR. Staff is very accommodating and most speak perfect English. We are in a suite overlooking a cozy and private swimming pool which includes 2 large shallow lounging platforms that are perfect.
There are also stunning individual treetop king rooms with amazing full glass views, each with private rooftop decks and seating to watch amazing sunsets. Amazing lush vegetation throughout, the property is pristine, easy to walk around with numerous winding steps and paths on smooth concrete, easy parking adjacent to the rooms.
Our suite overlooks a lovely, perfectly sized very private pool with 2 shallow lounging shelves……we have a great balcony with comfortable seating.
Dinner at the restaurant was spectacular, best we have had this trip so far….deliciously seasoned grilled fish, ribs, wonderful fresh vegetables, fresh green salad and 2 amazing deserts. The entire menu is interesting and thoughtful, looking forward to new tempting options.
We sat outside on a cantilevered deck for dinner and it was spectacular, moved atop a roof deck to marvel at the amazing sunset.
Our suite is great, very comfortable, perfect sized kitchen, nicely fitted out, dining and lounge area. There are 3 closets , plenty of shelving
Modern spacious bathroom has a very large walk in shower with instantly hot water with good pressure, the magnifying make up mirror a delightful surprise. Fresh bath, hand and pool towels provided.
Big windows with screens allow wonderful cool cross breezes, ceiling fans augment. The bed is extremely comfortable, lovely soft linens.
We used the laundry service, perfect after almost two weeks of travel. We initially booked one night and have promptly extended our stay for a couple more.
- Mafe (8/5): Very good - The view is amazing, and rooms are pretty spacious It could have been cleaner
- Mauricio (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (3/5): would not recommend or stay there again - the staff was wonderful and the view was beautiful. however, we sat in two chairs and the bottoms fell out, tv didn't work in the room, light fixture in the ceiling fan was cracked and the lock on the entry door had a wire sticking out of the door handle collar. the room and overall look of the resort needed repairs.
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Estela (7/5): Good -
- Lee (2/5): Renting a car was the best thing I could do. Don’t let this price fool you. Better off staying somewhere else, until the - The view. Free parking. WiFi was ok. Reached to all areas. How everything was non operational or broken. No “restaurant” as they mentioned. They rarely had anyone there to cook. No extra supplies like water to purchase. Pillows were molded. Door handle to room 10 has wires sticking out. ANTS EVERYWHERE. Fan barely worked. Shades were stained and broken. Shower had plumbing issues. Bed was extremely uncomfortable. Too far from everything. Outdated facilities. Storage was under my room, so whenever they accessed it, I would hear them working from in there.
- Larisa (10/5): Exceptional - We initially booked just one night here, but it felt like a place we could stay forever. This cozy retreat is set high in the mountains, offering breathtaking views of San José.
There is a small but very inviting pool, stunning rooms that are spacious with comfortable beds, beautiful bathrooms, and small yet well-equipped kitchens with everything you need.
The staff at this resort are incredibly friendly. Breakfast is not included in the price, but it can be ordered for an additional fee. The restaurant also offers a fantastic view. You can order massage or facial in their spa but we did not have time for it.
- Alfredo (7/5): Very pleasant, great stuff. - Cleanness Needs rooms maintenance
- Peiffer (8/5): Very good - Great view Fridge did not work the first day, they brought in a different one for our second day.
- Victoria (7/5): Good -
- Samantha (5/5): Good for one night when you go to the airport - It’s located nearby the airport. Staff was friendly. The property could use some maintenance. The wooden slats were loose, and the door handles kept falling off. Additionally, we encountered a cockroach on the door. I would not stay here again.
- Möhnle (9/5): Superb - The View Nothing
- Smith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Oksana (9/5): Superb -
- Richard (5/5): 👎 - The view from the rooms and restaurant are fantastic, it doesn't get better than this! GOOD: The outside of buildings looks like they have been recently painted and look good.
BAD: There is a general lack of maintenance on everything else. The floor in our rooom had not been swept. The room we stayed in you could not go on the rooftop and sit because the boards were rotten. In our room there was a large gap under the door and at night large ants came into the room and were everywhere. The shower drain did not work well and water backed up when taking a shower. The water was barely warm. The coffee pot was not clean when we arrived. The tables in the outside sitting areas were covered in bird poop! We would like to have swam, but the pool was dirty with lots of debris in it, dirty. The tv picture was so grainy you could not watch it. Tha walls in our room were dirty, it looked liked they were splattered with soda or something, clean it up!
It looks like this place was really grand at one time (not anymore) and could be again if they fixed, cleaned and maintained everything.
- Borysenko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anne (8/5): Climbing the hill is a challenge but once you get there it’s very nice! - The view is exceptional, every room has its own terrace and the bedroom has huge windows overlooking the green landscape.
Some of the employees are very friendly.
And the mattress is very comfortable. The furniture in the room is in need of renovation. There’s a little table but no chair.
They asked what we wanted for breakfast the next day ( 3 choices), but the next morning they didn’t have anymore what we had chosen. But they did offer a nice replacement.
- Stephen (9/5): Fantastic location for beautiful vistas of the surrounding mountain area - The main attraction for this hotel is the amazing location and vistas from the property. The views in all directions are fantastic. The bed was very comfortable and the room was nice. It is located a short distance from the interesting (to me)
town of Atenas which proclaims to have "the best climate in the world". I concur after 2 weeks in the area. If you do not have a car. the resort is an inexpensive taxi ride from town. Definitely worth a walk around the hilly neighborhood for some beautiful views of the surrounding area. The resort is very nice, but no dinner available the night I was there since there were only 2 guest rooms booked. I was not prepared with food of my own, but was able to order takeout from a nearby restaurant.
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Line (8/5): Very good -
- Douglas (10/5): Love staying here - Great location and the views are awesome. Staff is friendly and the food is good. Had a nice steak dinner. TV was fuzzy
- Doug (10/5): Spectacular sunrises and fabulous nighttime views! - Location, location, location! Some of the best views of the Central Valley. Atenas is a great little town with lots of us Gringos. It has great restaurants, Don YaYo is my favorite! The grilled steak is great! The restaurant at Baron’s is great also! I had a great steak there for around $20us. The breakfast is very good also.
Baron’s will always be one of my favorite places to stay in Costa Rica! Hard to find a negative. The television was fuzzy, could get better cable or tvs.
- Quentin (9/5): Exceptional view “en el mejor clima del mundo” - - view
- breakfast
- spacious rooms and equipped Sometimes you get only cold showers
- Jeffrey (8/5): Very good -
- Doug (9/5): Hard to get to, but worth it! - Killer view all around Hot water heater wasn’t working
- Alyssandra (8/5): Easy to find, quiet with nice views and a good breakfast - Lovely boutique hotel. The bar only served mixed drinks and beer, no wine. The buildings could use some new paint. Nice views over valley! Na
- Robert (9/5): All in all a very nice stay and if we are in that area of Costa Rica again we will definitely stay there. - The views are spectacular The restaurant was not open for dinner on that Thursday evening.
- Laurie (5/5): Good other than the water in the room - Location was nice and the view was beautiful
Great service We had water under the door getting our fog wet whrn he was sleeping and some items got wet
- Pascal (7/5): Good - Very good value for money and great location. There are a lot of things a bit old and needing repair, but for the price I got of $20/night with the last-minute booking, it's worth it. It's a great location to stay overnight outside of San Jose before hitting the road again in the early morning driving south.
- Robert (10/5): I was a bit concerned when I realized no AC but literally “no sweat” . - The exceptional views Ants and leaky fridge
- Urs (3/5): Poor -
- Ehsan (7/5): Good -
- Balaban (8/5): Very good -
- William (10/5): Exceptional - View, price to value ratio, staff, very good resort for the nightly rate. Its high position on the hill requires the use of taxi or rental car to reasonably access the nearby businesses or town.
- Hugues (3/5): Very disappointed with this hotel which is falling into ruin - I found easily the place and i received a nice welcome from the staff.
The hotel is on the top of the hill so you have a wonderfull panoramic view.
The bungalow is spacious. The hotel is shabby, with no attention paid to the general upkeep of the rooms. All furnishings and finishes are either old and unkempt, or deteriorated or broken. Cobwebs in the room left much to be desired in terms of general cleanliness. The bed was totally uncomfortable.
- David (6/5): Average - Stunning views Not clean
- Teresa (8/5): Very good - The ants in the room
- Jennifer (7/5): Good place for camping. Not a four star. - The staff were very friendly and helpful to me with changing my room to a different one with a kitchen. I was able to use their phone when mine wasn’t working. They arranged transportation to San Jose and were helpful in getting local directions. The service for getting my clothes washed took two days and I had to ask multiple times to get them back. It was difficult because I had limited amount of clothes. The ants in the room were a constant inconvenience every day in the kitchen. I had to resolve this problem after cooking and it was very frustrating. No extra garbage bags were provided soap or instructions on what to do during your stay if you needed assistance. The pool did not have adequate seating with cushions for our use. I had to bring my chair from my room.
- Philip (10/5): Perfect, want to go back again. - Lovely views from room, lovely room. Beautifully furnished. Lovely views from restaurant.
- Erkfritz (7/5): Very good for the price - This is an older property so there were some things that needed attending to. BUT, it was very clean and comfortable, and the view was spectacular! The staff, though few, were very helpful and accommodating. The price of the stay was more than reasonable. The room appearance could have been better. It was not a slum in any way, the property was beautiful, but the room could have used a bit of updating.
- Naylene (10/5): Better than imagined! - Fabulous view and great little deck to enjoy meals and the view! Everything was perfect!
- Katherine (8/5): Very good - The view and the service. The place is a bit old and the shower had low pressure but the view compensates.
- Loreena (4/5): Beautiful views but room for improvement - The servers and kitchen staff were very pleasant and efficient. The food portions were generous and food was good. The views were great. The structures of the villas, meeting rooms and restaurant provided a lot of opportunities to enjoy the view. The hotel was probably very nice when it was built. There is a lot of potential. The property was not clean. The Villa room was the least clean, and there was a line of non-cleaned floor around the rooms. There were a lot of large ants and other bugs. We saw far less in prior hotels during our trip. There is a lot of deferred maintenance at the location, scratches, torn fabrics, missing paint. It appears cleaning and maintenance may be understaffed.
- Rakesh (9/5): Fantastic views, attentive staff, comfortable stay - Picturesque, unique, great service and good value for money Fantastic views, comfortable settings , great breakfast and attentive service
- Janet (10/5): Exceptional - We received a lovely welcome email explaining check in and what the procedure would be if we arrived later in the evening. Upon our arrival, we
were warmly welcomed and received a welcome letter expressing their appreciation for us choosing them and the highlghts of their services. . The table in unit was set for a meal. They had a wine opener as part of the units kitchen supplies. The shower had hot water and the bed was very comfortabke enabling a great aleep. . The view and nature sounds were fabulous.. We had to leave early in morning and the night security had the gate open for us just prior to our departure. Sorry we had to leave early in the morning and didn't get to enjoy more of these facilities.
- Flintmcc1956 (8/5): Nice place, let down by the bugs - The location was superb, beautiful views. Staff friendly and helpful. Very peaceful and pool was clean. We had a very relaxing stay. No Aircon, just an electric fan, The rooms were hot and sticky as a result. Vertical blinds on the windows facing balcony were defective due to lack of maintenance. The bugs and flying insects. Which were in the room were offputing. It was worse when the rains began. The room would have benefitted from a better deep cleaning regime.
- Tony (3/5): Poor - Staff was friendly/ helpful, and the views were beautiful. (But that is where it ended.) Read the other negative reviews to get an accurate assessment of this property. It could be special, but as our realtor said...they aren't putting money into the little things that would make it more appealing.
- Aaron (10/5): Great !!!! - Great place stay for weekend ...Awsome View ...Thanks!!!
- Sarah (1/5): Bad - The view! Awful run down resort! Ant infestation, It was extremely dirty! Many things in the room were broken. Staff was friendly and eventually brought us a can of ant spray after we used a whole can of our bug repellent. Would not recommend and the owner should be ashamed! Find other accommodations!!;
- Joseph (9/5): Nice find. Would stay here again. - We loved this place. Location for us was what we wanted. Great view. It is not in Atenas itself. That might not be for everybody. But we liked it. We had a car. Limited menu. But the food was good.
- Wesley (10/5): Exceptional - This place had some amazing views and features. Everything you might need with an amazing view of the sky at night. Pool was located easy and convenient.
- Naylene (10/5): Booked the room at the last minute, we were stunned at how beautiful the place was. We'll return! - Spectacular views of the mountains and valleys and the room was just beautiful. Unbelievable value for the cost of the room.
- Sylvia (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (7/5): Excellent views but the rooms need a little maintenance - The property is located atop a mountain and had spectacular views Although located on a mountain with foliage, insects etc. the rooms need a little bit of maintenance and an unsatisfactory amount of insects in the room.
- Fence (1/5): Bad -
- Felipe (8/5): It was nice enough - The view was amazing! The room was a little bit dirty and there was no AC for such a hot place.
- Arne (5/5): If you want a nice view, it's a great place. But there are clear signs of neglect all around. - Great location with super views. There were cob webs all around the rooms, showing a poor level of cleanliness. (They were not new, and have probably been there for a long time.)
I saw that the chef got a bad score on some website, so we decided to not have breakfast there at all.
The mattress was not level and I therefore found it uncomfortable trying to sleep on it.
- Julianna (4/5): Overpriced and disappointing - We liked the views and that they had a pool except the water was way too cold to fully enjoy it. We booked this “resort” for our anniversary and also to celebrate new years but the staff didn’t even acknowledge that we were celebrating, say congratulations or offer anything special. They put us in a room next to the parking lot where car lights shine into the room when other guests arrive and we heard loud voices late at night and early in the morning when people walked down the ramp which was right next to our door. The private rooftop is not private at all as there are guests right next to you blasting music or talking because it’s literally two feet away. The room was okay except that after staying 2 nights the next morning I saw black mold on the pillows.
As for the restaurant this is the only place in the resort with a nice view but the breakfast was so disappointing and it’s really overpriced for what you get. Despite advertising the breakfast for $10 they tried to charge us 6000 colones which is an absolutely outrageous price for what we got and very little food a few scraps of fruit, a pitiful small portion of Gallo pinto and overcooked rock solid bacon. I don’t mind paying for a good meal if it’s cooked properly and tastes delicious but this was not at all what I’d expect from a fancy restaurant. We didn’t even bother going for dinner only to get ripped off by their overpriced menu.
I’m not sure why they call it a resort because there is nothing resort like about it. They mentioned a spa but I saw nothing about it and the hotel staff was not interested in helping us plan any excursions or activities. Don’t even bother coming here without a car because you’ll be paying anywhere from 2000-5000 colones for taxis just to leave.
Overall it was definitely not worth it. Oh and the price we were quoted through booking.com ended up being more expensive because they add on an extra tax.
- Natalia (8/5): Very good - Style of hotel It was dirty in the room
- Alina (8/5): Amazing views - Despite the newest reviews we decided to stay at this Hotel. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the views were amazing!
In our room the hot shower worked perfectly and the bed was comfortable.
There were a few ants but I didn’t stay at any place in Costa Rica where I did not find a few ants.
Yes, the property would need some updates and a bit better cleaning.
We felt comfortable, thanks!
- Mary (1/5): Great views, too many ants & spiders in my bed.
Bad stay - Mattress was comfortable except for the spiders in my bed. Ant & spider exterminator needed. Hot shower ran cold after a few minutes. Email to resort manager unresponsive. Front desk not 24 hours. Arrived @ 8:30pm & had to reserve online, the desk wouldn't make reservations upon arrival. Front desk closes at 9pm so she was in a hurry to leave & and didn't want to be bothered reserving my room.
- Matteo (8/5): Very good - The views from the restaurant and the spacious room included of kitchen and various amenities.
- Nadzeya (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (6/5): Pleasant - attention to details like cleanliness, better pots & pans for cooking, better shower faucets, hotter water.
- Roger (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (3/5): With the exception of the friendly staff and beautiful views we cpouldn’t wait to leave after a 2 day stay. - Location and views were great.
Staff were friendly and helpful The first room we were given was filthy.
Moved us to another more expensive room where the entry lock didn’t work
Breakfast food ok. Evening menu selection poor. Meal was virtually inedible.
- Christine (3/5): Never Again!!! - View and staff. Beautiful view and kind staff. Nothing else good. There was no hot water in shower without asking for it each time I needed it.Power/lights went out every night for hours for unknown reasons, without notice or flashlights given. No clean sheets, trash removal, towels, or cleaning on the room for 5 days going. Rained hard each night, resulting in water poured down the walls in room. Restaurant had little or no food to offer. Very, very limited bar. Often, no one working in the lobby area, I had to walk around the area outside calling for help.
It appeared I was the only guest there!
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - The view the fresh temperatures the sunrise
- Jose (8/5): Very good -
- Dmitry (10/5): Exceptional - The views were everything. From the cafe, from my room, from my private rooftop balcony. Wow. Worth every cent
- Vane (10/5): Exceptional -
