Guest Reviews
- Corianne (3/5): Poor -
- Pietro (10/5): Exceptional - Great location. Nice view day and night, the wilderness of the place, the connection with people there, free filtered water in the kitchen. You'll love the cats and Rosita too :)
Also, Daniel has been a super helpful and very kind host. Our time at Bajo Las Estrellas was truly memorable ;) None.
- Isidora (10/5): Exceptional - I really enjoyed my stay. I had the luxury tent with a double bed and I had the most comfortable sleep!
A steep little hill needs to be climbed in order to reach the hostel but this means that there was always a nice cool breeze in the night which made sleep super comfortable.
The staff were great, helpful and friendly.
The kitchen is super basic but you can find most of what you need. The shower with the view was a great experience during the sunset!
If I am in Mazunte, I will come back for sure! Thank you!
- Isabelle (9/5): Felt a bit like a community, tempting to stay longer! - I had a great stay, it’s a very chill place. Fernando and the volunteers are creating such a nice vibe and they are very helpful. I loved the location, village and several beaches easy accessible. Mattress could’ve been a bit better
- Charlotte (9/5): Awesome place if you like camping - Very nice location! I had a tent at the top, which provides you with some fresh sea breeze during those hot days. Staff really friendly and will help you with anything! Also gave some great suggestions for hidden pearls in the area. Would definitely recommend if you like camping and a chill atmosphere. The animals onside were also very friendly
- Audrey (9/5): Beautiful retreat from town yet close to everything! - Beautiful location. The outdoor toilet and showers :) yes, the stars are your ceiling and a lovely breeze if you are tenting at the top. Great music and vibes. Overall, quiet and chill eco-atmosphere for everyone to enjoy the space. It’s a nice retreat from the buzz of being in town. And a water filter! Thank you! The walk up the hill. I read about it in other reviews, but that day I arrived in the afternoon for check in and even with just a carry on suitcase…it was a hot trek up the hill. I took my time, but definitely get help or pace yourself if you have more luggage. Or get a moto.
- Sam (6/5): Pleasant -
- Macy (10/5): The owners are lovely and were very generous in sharing recommendations for the area. The vibe here is lovely and matche -
- Leif (10/5): Best budget stay in Mazunte! - Gorgeous property a short walk up a hill with great views and close to town. The owners are super lovely people who spend most of their day taking great care of the campground. It’s safe, and the food and drinks are great. Plus they offer many other services such as laundry and rentals for beach activities.
- Tom (9/5): Had an excellent time at this special place, hosts made me feel very welcome. - Beautiful views and many common areas to meet new people and relax. Tent was very comfortable and I liked the overall styling of the place.
- Joy (9/5): A fun stay! - It’s camping, folks. If you don’t like camping then you’re probably not going to enjoy it here. But if you like camping, you’ll love it!
I will miss the shower and the toilet that gives you a view of the verdant hills and the songbirds flitting about. So beautiful!
The city tries to limit the use of lights so if you arrive after dark you’ll walk up a steep, dirt road in the dark. BUT because of the regulations, you’ll also get to see a sky full of stars! I could have used just a wee bit more padding in the tent.
- Mariana (7/5): Good - They said they rescue dogs and help with a percentage of the earnings to help street dogs I got a reaction in my skin after sleeping in one of those tents, something that spread all over my face...
- Jose (8/5): The place is good, but for what you pay here you can stay in a slightly more comfortable place. It is worth the experien - Great vibe, ideal for adventurous travellers. There are only two toilets and two showers; at pick hours you have to wait a good chunk of time to use them.
- Afa (7/5): Good budget option but not as comfortable as I had hoped. - Good price and very friendly staff. The location is good too. I was expecting an inflatable bed in the tent as pictured but had a very thin mattress which was not so comfortable to sleep on. Also, would be good to have some rules about noise after a certain hour at night. Other guests were very noisy & inconsiderate well into 3 in the morning, which made sleeping difficult.
- Dalila (1/5): I didn’t stay! Paid off and find a new place! - Nothing. I didn’t have the tent I booked, only one bathroom available for all the guests and two showers. Hard access too!
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elena (9/5): Superb - You cannot say it, you just feel it. Perfect place, perfect people The matrass in the tent could be a bit better. It is confortable, yes, nevertheless a bit too thin
- Cristina (10/5): A paradise 🤍 -
- Mikko (9/5): Superb - The laidback vibe, location on top of the hill, views were beautiful. You like it if you enjoy sleeping within the sounds and things of the jungle.
- Ricardo (8/5): Very good -
- Hannah (3/5): Poor - The view was beautiful and the staff were very friendly but the bathroom situation prompted us to leave and find a new place in Zipolite. I see why there are no pictures of it. You can stay in a beachfront hotel in Zipolite with a useable bathroom for a fraction of the price. The tent had a lot of holes in it as well so a mosquito net would have been nice.
- Robin (9/5): Superb - The personal is adorable and very helpful with good tips for activities
It’s clean and in harmony with nature
Very great view
Good value for money A more waterproof roof to better protect the tents
- Marijn (9/5): Unique experience, great atmosphere - The owners were really nice and accommodating, felt really welcome and at ease. You see the love that is put in the place and appreciate the sustainable methods that have been put in place regarding water conservation. Visited during the high season, so the tents were definitely somewhat overprice
- Emma (9/5): Lovely camping in Mazunte - Great place to stay. The owners were superfriendly and i really liked the outdoor shower. It was cozy and lovely. All good!
- Ailysh (8/5): Very good - The staff was very kind, the view was beautiful, there was lots of places to sit and write...or just take it in. The kitchen stove was a difficult situation (pilot was hard to light and went out with any wind). Also, they say there is coffee to buy but there isn't
- Emma (8/5): Great value for money at an amazingly central location. Max gave us great local tips!! -
- Vanessa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tamsin (4/5): Not glamping, but very crowded camping - Friendly place, a short walk from the centre of mazunte. Nice seating and cooking area. The tents were millimetres apart. Luckily no one was snoring in the next door tents. The tents are mostly on a concrete floor- all together in a small area.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional - Great relaxed vibe
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional - Such a beautiful place and location to stay while in Mazunte! The staff are so lovely and you instantly feel welcome there, a sociable place where you can interact with more travelers in the common outdoor spaces. It's also nice to have a tent to yourself too! I really enjoyed my time here and would definitely go back, thankyou! :)
- Laure (9/5): Incredible ! - The hosts were amazing! Thank you Nati and Max for everything! They were so kind and the space was amazing. Real positive vibes :)
- Miguel (9/5): Superb -
- Martin (8/5): Very good -
- Yuin (9/5): Superb -
- Hanne (10/5): Exceptional - I really liked my stay at Bajo Las Estrellas. The owners are super friendly, the atmosphere is amazing and the location is beautiful!
- Dora (1/5): Bad -
- Julen (5/5): Passable -
- Sophia (7/5): Good -
- John (4/5): Disappointing - The location is good and pretty view and they have nice cats around <3 It is ok to save water and help the environment but I think is NOT OK to have a filthy bathroom with very smelly water that you can even smell in the kitchen, also the staff didn’t even bother to take the trash out of the restroom (trash can was full of toilet paper). The toilet flush worked for me only once out of 4 times, so I couldn’t even use it. Host charges for everything, even drinking water. Beer in community fridge from hostel costs 50% more than in local restaurants.
You can find something better for the same price.
- Jiménez (1/5): Bad - Nothing no facilites
- Øystein55 (10/5): Highly recommend - The couple running the place is just wonderful! Nicely located close to everything, but slightly uphill and away from the road. Truly a lot of stars visible. Comfortable, personal and affordable :) Nothing.
- Elise (9/5): Cool place and amazing owner! - Amazing relaxed place! The location is great and the staff is super friendly. Everything that you need is there.
- Anja (8/5): Very good - Very chill camping out in the green. Simple but lovely! 10-15min from different beaches
- Antoine (10/5): Exceptional - Everything ! The owners are really kind and take care of you. The framework is amazing and you could stay all day long in the living area looking at the landscape. The pets are also crazy kind and looking for hugs 😍
A top place if you are not annoyed by the camping 🏕️
- Djoy (2/5): We left - The employee was kind The property is up on a steep hill. There wasn’t a warning for this on booking.com. The photos make it seem like it is more glamorous then what it really is. The tent we booked wasn’t the tent we got assigned. The shower erea couldn’t close or lock properly, only with a curtain. All in all, it wasn’t what we expected according to the advertisement
- Anthony (8/5): Very good - The rates The location of the camp. Is really misrepresented on here
- Dennis (10/5): Top -
- Jennifer (7/5): Good - Very comfortable tent and good environmental efforts. Sometimes the social spaces felt quite small with different guests outside the hostel. I sometimes felt like I was imposing.
- Leticia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Saga (1/5): Rip-off, trying to be eco but in the end just want to earn money on tourists. - Got our money back. Me and my friend arrived when it was dark, The road up to the place was pitch dark. When we got up the hill there was a girl greeting us. She showed us around,
The restroom was a toilet that didn’t flush, You need to fill a bucket of water (that takes forever) and then pour the water inside. She told us that we booked a tiny tent and maybe wanted to upgrade. I thought it was as the ones I saw at the website but they didn’t even had a picture of it. The tent was in a cement building. We where supposed to sleep on the concrete next to 3 other small tents and be woken by the construction workers at 07:30. This felt like a totally rip-off! The woman volunteering tried to talk us in to stay cuz according to her all the other places in Mazunte was worse than this. At the beginning she was super friendly but then she got mad when we told her that we didn’t want to stay..
- Jorge (9/5): Superb -
- Saskia (8/5): Beautiful spot - Beautiful views, super friendly staff. Really nice and chill atmosphere. Close to town. I really missed a place to chill. There was one bed, but it was in a very sunny spot or you could use the couch in the kitchen. Would've loved to have some hammocks for example.
- Rachele (10/5): Exceptional - Great people with great energy, 5 minutes from different beaches and 2 minutes from Hridaya Yoga center.
- Rebecca (8/5): Great - Location, tent, open bathroom and shared kitchen
And the staff is really friendly It's perfect but only if it isn't raining. Then it's wet everywhere (maybe if they fix the roof in the bathroom then it will be better)
- Melo (8/5): Very good -
- Storm (4/5): Needs a lot of work - Beautifull place with a lot of potential. I think the hosts (which are good people) will make it a very nice place to stay. They just need some more time to build. The tents were small and I almost got a sunstroke becouse of the heat.
- Karla (9/5): The experience I needed to live and that it’s gonna be yours too! - It was definitely something different of what people usually offered in other booking sites, staying here was the experience i needed to live. I loved the staff, and the movie night projection, also the shower was great! I didn’t like the fact that a group of girls next to our camping tent were soooo loud after 11pm and the staff didn’t tell them to respect the silence
- Anonymous (3/5): Hot and uncomfortable - Good location between the two beaches.
Nati was a great host and Yoda the cat is adorable.
Well stocked kitchen The tents were impossible to sleep in because of the heat, I ended up sleeping in the hammock as it was the only place cool enough. We extended for a night and were charged for sleeping in the hammock even though this was never mentioned before.
Max was very rude about us not being able to use the facilities past check-out time and having to leave. We had bought fresh seafood to eat for lunch and had to leave it.
All of these problems could have been avoided with better communication; it’s completely understandable if the kitchen/bathroom is unusable because it is being cleaned, or if there is an extra cost for using another space, but just let people know beforehand.
I tried to mention this to Max and he proceeded to complain about English people and completely ignore my point.
I’ve been camping in plenty of places around Mexico and although the sleeping arrangements weren’t ideal, it was the attitude of certain staff that ruined the experience.
- Aviña (8/5): Very good -
- Daniele (6/5): Pleasant -
- Cedric (10/5): Perfect chill place in Mazunte - Good location between Mazunte and San Agustinillo so you can choose to which beaches you want to go. Max and Nati are the perfect hosts, very welcoming and helpful. The tent is nice with great view on the landscape. Nada
- Mattia (6/5): Pleasant - The view and the fresh breeze Defintely too crowded for only one bathroom with the only shower inside the bathroom. Dirty common spaces and small tents with no space outside for your luggage. Seemed the owner was distracted and dind't care much about our stay. Much better choiches down by the ocean for almoust the same price
- Butler (8/5): Very good -
- Dena (10/5): Exceptional - The owners, the communal space and conversations with the other travelers.
- Valerie (10/5): Exceptional - The atmosfeer was so nice, i got to know some nice people there, everyone was very open and helpful, And it’s a very cozy place!
- Nelson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Eliana (7/5): Good -
- Alexander (10/5): Amazing! - I really loved to stay here and like a lot of people I met here, I extended my stay. If you like camping it‘s probably the best place to stay in Mazunte. The whole site is quite recently built with love, you are really sleeping under the stars and since Mazunte is so small, it really didn‘t bother me to walk up the hill. It‘s also really close to San Agustinillo which I would say, is the nicest beach around Mazunte. Nati is a really great host!
- Marc (7/5): fun campsite experience in Mazunte - really great vibe at the campsite
owners are really lovely and give great tips a bit too pricey to sleep in tents - most of them only had very thin mattresses
- Matthew (10/5): A simple, peaceful camping experience. - The simple, no-frills campsite was exactly what I was looking for. The owners/operators were great to talk to, and I love how they are running the operation. Wish we could've stayed longer! We made the mistake of not telling them we were arriving late. When we arrived, the whole place was dark and no one seemed to be awake, so we couldn't figure out how to check-in. Next time we'll be sure to communicate with them ahead of time.
- Viktoria (9/5): Superb - Great location, good vibe. Would absolutely recommend. Clean, simple, authentic. Prices are quite high. Communication with before arrival could have been better.
- Peter (10/5): The peaceful place this traveller needed to rest and recover. Gracias! - this glamping place is unique for area. Great creation in short amount of time. No dislikes
- Lindsay (10/5): Exceptional - Like most people who booked here, I extended my stay by several days because it felt good to be there. The location is beautiful, the ecological aspect of the project feels good, and the campsite feels like a community that I didn’t want to leave. Nati, the owner, is a wonderful human and I miss her already!
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Tim (10/5): Just book already - Nati, the host, is absolutely amazing. She made the stay almost more than the beauty of the campsite itself. There's also 2 dogs and a kitten which for me are also big pluses ;)
If you don't mind sleeping in a tent, book. Because it's 100% worth it
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional - the hosts couple are super nice and welcoming. The camping they are building is such a great work, the view is amazing and it’s very peaceful.
- Uri (6/5): Pleasant -
- Chiara (6/5): not worth it - the place was nice, the girl who welcomed us was super nice and available all the time, she lives on the spot.
the bathroom is mostly the reason why we chose this place and it was cool showering in an open room with view on nature. the place is not really close to the “center” and to get there there are 2 really steep climbs and I had to take a break in between cause I was carrying my backpack and was really tough.
there’s only one bathroom for at least 12 tents which is really uncomfortable, always line to use it and after some showers the water was over and you have to wait for the tank to fill up again.
i think is expensive for what they give, not central position, hard to reach.. also the tent smelled like feet😥 and there are 3 plugs for 5 tents so I couldn’t charge my phone. also no light in the tend or in the way so you have to be with your torch on all the time
- Sean (10/5): very nice unique accommodation - Cool accommodation sleeping in the tents.
super nice location.
friendly staff. there is a small incline to climb to reach the accommodation but it’s manageable
- Marius (10/5): Amazing! - Max is an amazing host! He helps you with everything and gives his best to make your stay as comfortable as it can get. We loved the hospitality and the sustainable approach of the campsite. We stayed only for one night but we would come back any time. The campsite is still in progress. The time we went there was only one bathroom. Expect waiting for the bathroom at the „rush hour“ in the morning. But while waiting you will always find someone for a nice chat or use the time to pet the two lovely dogs or the super sweet baby kitten :)
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Really nice people. Felt at home
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- Freya (9/5): Superb -
- Dijana (5/5): Not the best stay but kind of OK. -
- Ana (9/5): Superb - The location. The couple that runs It is great. The other people in the camping was very sociable. The possibility of watching the stars and the tranquility at night. I found it a bit expensive to be a camping.
- Dian21 (10/5): Little love nest in a hill - The camp is up a small hill 5min away the town, no noise, no lights, just the stars and moon. The owners Naty and Max are the sweetest people; so warm and welcoming, you can feel the place was created with much love involved. They prepare coffee in the morning and share some useful tips to enjoy your stay at mazunte. The place is quite eco-friendly which is appreciated and the shower built out of bamboo is so pretty and enjoyable. Definitely would come back.
- Alexia (10/5): this is more than camping. such a beautiful little place on the top of the hill. - super chilled and cozy and very friendly owners!
there’s little lights everywhere to make it pretty and quiet 🙏🏼
- Brayan (8/5): Good - The owner are the friendliest and most helpful people if met. It’s a hike up to the place,
- Grant (5/5): Nice people, lots of potential but disappointed with the price for being under construction - The owners were very kind and hospitable. I think what they are doing with this place is cool and respectable. The view was also decent. The bed was clean and the tent kept the bugs out well. Wifi signal was strong. This place is under construction. I really think the price was too much, it mostly comes down to the location and the bathroom. It's not so bad if you have a car or bike, but it's quite a steep hill. Also being in between Mazunte and San Augustinillo wasn't very convenient for walking. If you like to be away from the action though it could be for you. Having to flush the toilet with a bucket is quite unappealing for the price to stay here. Other hostels that are half the price have a more sanitary way of using the toilet. Also having the septic tank open and right next to the toilet makes the smell horrible when flushing. I'm sure they are working to make a more user friendly option but I was a little appalled for paying double what I paid at a previous hostel in Mazunte.
- Jac (8/5): Basic but enjoyable - The owners were super friendly and welcoming, and the open bathroom was awesome. They had all necessary facilities and the view was beautiful. Was a bit hard to find as not yet on google maps and none of the taxi drivers had a clue about it, I guess as it’s new. I was also expecting one of the canvas tents as that’s what the pictures showed, but I literally had a small blue one tent (pictured) with a little mattress in it hahaha. It was fine and comfortable enough, and the only accommodation available so can’t really complain! Just wasn’t aware of this on booking.
- Mangeng (10/5): Exceptional -
