I would recommend this hotel for anyone seeking a calm atmosphere. The dinner options are limited. Small restaurants to scout.

- Itamar (9/5): A lovely Ryokan experience - A very traditional and beautiful Ryokan. We started our honeymoon there and overall we loved it, it was a very special and calming experience. The staff were very nice and welcoming, they made us feel like they really care. The food was delicious and very diverse traditional meal, a very nice way to introduce yourself to the local cuisine. The Japanese garden is lovely, we stayed in a room that had a small private garden as well, it was an almost spiritual experience. The sanitary ware are very old, it looks dirty at first sight. My wife is very sensitive when it comes to cleaning, so we had to leave a complaint at the reception. The staff did their very best to make us happy and upgraded us to a beautiful suite. We really appreciated their effort. Hope they will renovate that in the future, because other than that this was a perfect place.

- My Trang (10/5): Parfait ! - Très beau ryokan , un écrin de verdure en pleine ville, avec un personnel attentionné et d’une extrême politesse. Nous avons passé 4 nuits pour terminer notre séjour au Japon. La chambre est très grande et l’onsen privé est fort appréciable. Ne pas hésiter à acheter les entrées à la réception (remise) pour le Izu Panorama Parc car vous aurez une vue incroyable sur le mont Fuji (par beau temps bien sûr) après une brève montée en funiculaire. Le dîner n’est pas nécessaire car plusieurs restaurants sont à proximité. De manière improbable, ne pas hésiter à acheter des fraises dans une « tirette » à proximité car issues de la ferme. Un délice ! Le petit déjeuner est lassant au bout de 4 jours mais cela n’enlève rien à l’esthétisme des plats
- Richard (10/5): Magische, außerweltliche Erfahrung und vollkommene Ruhe - Wo fange ich nur an? Unser Aufenthalt im Sanyo-So war eine traumhafte, beinahe magische Erfahrung, der Worte kaum gerecht werden. Wer dem Alltag entschwinden, perfektionierte japanische Gastfreundschaft und eine fast außerweltliche Erfahrung sucht, sollte hier einige Nächte verbringen. Der Preis ist stolz, ja, aber gerechtfertigt. Allein die Tage im Sanyo-So sind eine Reise wert. Kurz nach der Buchung wurden wir vom Hotel kontaktiert und gefragt, ob wir einen Transfer wünschten und welches Menü (standard oder vegatarisch) wir bevorzugten. Als Fischliebhaber entschieden uns für ersteres. Am Tag unserer Anreise wurden wir schließlich am Bahnhof von Izu-Nagaoka abgeholt und zum Hotel gefahren. Im Eingangsbereich roch es nach Weihrauch und Jasmin. Wie für ein japanischen Ryokan üblich bat man uns, unsere Schuhe abzugeben; im gesamten Hotel bewegt man sich ausschließlich auf Socken oder barfuß. Man nahm uns unsere Rucksäcke ab, erklärte uns die Anlage des Hotels und brachte uns zu unserem Zimmer. Bei diesem "Zimmer" handelte es sich weniger um ein Zimmer als viel mehr um eine Suite, eine Wohnung inkl. privatem Onsen und mit Blick in einen zauberhaften Garten. Frühstück und Abendessen gibt es zu festen Zeiten. Beide sind für europäische Verhältnisse durchaus fremd, aber waren sehr lecker und toll zubereitet. Wer Fisch mag, kommt hier auf seine Kosten. Das Menü wechselte täglich. Die gesamte Anlage ist traumhaft und ermöglicht, wirklich einmal zur Ruhe zu kommen. Wir sind oft im vom Hotel zur Verfügung gestellten Yukata durch den Garten geschlendert, sowohl bei Tag als auch am Abend und haben die Ruhe genossen. Der öffentliche Onsen mit Außenbereich war ebenfalls super. Das Personal war sehr zuvorkommend. Unser besonderer Dank gilt dem Keller Lee bzw. Justin, der uns alle Speisen auf Englisch erklärte und sehr hilfsbereit war. Nichts. Der Aufenthalt hier war Perfektion.

In the daytime the gardens are stunning. Staff even gave my sons fish food to feed the fish in the pond. Breakfast at their restaurant is very well organized and lovely. We enjoyed many parts of our stay, but there was noticeable dark staining on the ceiling in our room that appeared to be mold or water damage. The room accommodations were very poor. Our family was congested during the stay and our child developed a fever, so seeing this was concerning. I had to cancel our planned activities. Beds were too small and hard so we ended up sleeping on the futons provided which seemed even worse because of how dusty they were. Ventilation was in the rooms were so bad and had to wear a mask to just go to sleep. Could not sleep and just wanted to leave already. What was supposed to be a relaxing last end to our Japan trip turned into a horrible experience. Very disappointing. We understand older properties can have wear and tear, but this should be addressed and inspected for future guests. Aside from that issue, the ryokan experience itself was pleasant.

- Nick (9/5): Erholung und Japan pur! - Unser viertägiger Aufenthalt im Hotel Sanyo-So hat mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen. Wir hatten ein Zimmer mit Tatami-Bereich und privatem Onsen gebucht. Das Gebäude und die Einrichtung sind, wie erwartet, nicht mehr neu, doch man merkt deutlich, dass großer Wert auf Sauberkeit und das Wohlbefinden der Gäste gelegt wird. Auch die wunderschöne Gartenanlage ist sehr gepflegt und trägt maßgeblich zur entspannten Atmosphäre bei. Das Zimmer mit dem privaten Onsen hat mir besonders gut gefallen, auch wenn sich an einigen Stellen leichte Gebrauchsspuren und Flecken im Teppich fanden. Das Frühstück und das Abendessen waren fabelhaft – ein echtes kulinarisches Erlebnis. In Kombination mit dem äußerst freundlichen und zuvorkommenden Service ergab sich ein rundum stimmiges und angenehmes Gesamtbild. Ich würde mich jederzeit wieder für dieses Hotel entscheiden. - Samantha Jillian (10/5): An unforgettable stay - My stay at Sanyo-so is one I will remember for the rest of my life. A place carefully preserved over time, it's a ryokan with a story that has been maintained just as elegantly as the property itself. The staff are absolutely wonderful and you can tell there is a true respect for their roles and the caretaking of the ryokan. The rooms are more like having your own private home, with plentiful space, welcoming private gardens and onsens, and a feeling of peace throughout. The property's Japanese garden is truly exceptional and will remain one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever had the privilege of wandering. The kaiseki meals were astonishingly beautiful, with the chefs being incredibly meticulous over each and every dish- the standouts were certainly the melted cod in yuzu, the lily bulb tofu, and the simply marvelous breakfast bento. The restaurant space was designed in such a way that you feel as if you are dining privately, which added even more so to the phenomenal meals. Sanyo-so is a true sanctuary for those seeking a reconnection with nature, themselves, and an esteemed level of cultural remembrance which has been lost to the rest of the world.

- Orphee (8/5): Une bulle de calme hors du monde moderne, ou l'on s'immerge pleinement dans la tradition japonaise - L'établissement Sanyoso vous transporte littéralement dans un japon d'une autre époque. Tout est fait pour vous couper du monde extérieur et vous dépayser. Calme et sérénité se dégage des lieux. Nous avions une chambre avec onsen privé. Un délice. Le onsen donne sur un petit jardin et invite à la relaxation. Vous êtes dans un environnement tout à fait traditionnel, avec un personnel très à l'écoute. (anglais OK) Le repas et petits déjeuner sont traditionnels eux aussi. N'attendez pas un buffet international, ce sont deux vrais repas japonais salés aux saveurs surprenantes et variées concoctés par le/les chefs (poisson, riz, salades d'algues, bouillons, viandes, légumes japonais et tout un éventail de petites bouchées à déguster sur ces deux repas.) Il n'y a pas de menu enfant, mon fils de 10 ans a eu les mêmes plats. Il a goûté pas mal de choses, mais si votre enfant est peu habitué aux saveurs asiatiques, il ne mangera rien. Nous avons passé une nuit dans cet établissement pour couper notre séjour entre Osaka et Tokyo et nous nous sommes vraiment reposés. Les jardins du sanyoso sont également splendides .Nous avons adoré! des lampes de chevets dans la chambre plutôt que des plafonniers seraient très agréables pour parfaire l'ambiance des lieux

- まゆみ (4/5): - 外観、内装が素晴らしいと思い、予約しました。予め『外観なし』と記載されていたので、期待はしていませんでしたが、あまりにも荒れ果てた庭？だったので、一緒に旅行した母親は文句タラタラでした。 旅館に泊まると、売店での買い物が楽しみの一つですが、17時閉店の為、行こうと思ったら『終わりました』と言われ、がっかりです。 お食事処や、大浴場までの距離も長く、老齢の母には辛かったようです。 部屋風呂にも温泉がひいてあり、ゆったりした浴室だったのが、救いでした。

My grandma enjoyed the food so much during our stay here and she said that was the best meals she had in our trip. Thanks so much for accommodating her with no seafood option. She loved it and I really appreciate. The room was spacious and private onsen in room was great. We all had good sleeps. Would like to come back. The heaters in room need some cleaning as dust is quite heavy on it.

- Renee (6/5): Pleasant - Gorgeous gardens and water features surrounding the residences. We loved the dining experiences - serving traditional food and amazing wait staff. Private onsen in our room was a great experience. The property is within nature and understandably this means that there may be more insects than normal but we experienced two large cockroaches (one was cleaned up by staff only after we had to leave our room to request help after staff did not attend our room when asked). The room felt dirty in some areas (i.e sinks in toilet not clean or urinal not clean). Bedding was nice but beds were very hard (as expected although it ultimately meant we were not comfortable). We spent a lot of money to stay for two nights and left feeling that it was probably not worth it.
- Melis (10/5): Exceptional - It is a beautiful place reflecting all of traditional Japanese culture from facilities to rooms and food. Rooms are spacious, the private baths are amazing and food is exceptionally good. All the staff are very friendly and made us feel at home. It was such a bliss to walk around the peaceful Japanese garden and think about the history of the place. This was our second time at Sanyo-so and I highly recommend for families with kids and large groups. We could bot enjoy the public baths due to tattoo policies but even without it was an amazing stay.

Makes you not want to leave! - This place was exceptional - everything from the hotel itself including onsen, the rooms, the staff, and the meals. If I could give it 20 stars out of 10, I would. We contacted them about our arrival time at the train station and a shuttle was sent to pick us up. We were then upgraded upon arrival (a very kind gesture as it was our honeymoon), and the manager personally delivered a beautiful fruit platter to us as well. The meals were included in the price we paid (dinner and breakfast), served Japanese style - five stars and amazing service. Our room was super spacious and had 3 living areas and a garden, we didn't feel the need to leave at all - the mini bar was refilled daily (beer and Japanese frizzy drinks) and it was so relaxing. My partner who does not normally enjoy the public bathhouse experience LOVED our private onsen and I'm very happy he got to try it out. The town itself was small and truly showed us Japanese hospitality at its best, friendly people who tried hard to communicate and be helpful and conversational despite language barriers. We did explore the town a bit, quite walkable or by bike and highly recommend Tsukushi Ramen (best ramen we've ever had - just Google map it) and also Toriei skewer bar. We will definitely be back one day. Nothing. Don't change a thing.

- Michelle (10/5): Luxurious stay in a beautiful ryokan with amazing food. - The grounds were beautiful and spacious, as was the room, though it definitely showed some wear. Each meal we had was varied and delicious/interesting, with many different things to try. We loved the in room onsen and the views. The ryokan is located in a lesser visited area, so the area was very quiet and chill - more "small town" feeling (which we liked). We took the nearby cable car to the Mt Fuji viewpoint, which had great views and was uncrowded on a weekday. We had to ask several times to have the futon set up, but it was because the room also had two western style beds.
- Cathreen (9/5): Overall I'm very happy with the hotel and will consider coming back next year with my family. - Sanyo So is located in a large property. We stayed in the Deluxe room in the new building. The room has a sitting area right next to our own garden with a little stream. It was so private! The hallway leading to the restaurant has windows all along with views of greenery and waterfall, also lit up at night. A nice walk leading to the dining room, so beautiful! The Japanese garden was well maintained with a stone bridge, pond and ancient pine trees, a pleasant place to walk around. Both breakfast and dinner were traditional kaiseki style, serving food that were in season. Staff were fantastic and friendly. The attached onsen was nice but need some updating, with the constant humidity and heat it is showing its age. This is the only negative of the overall stay.

The garden is incredible and all the scenery is carefully designed and tended to in a way that really makes you appreciate the effort that goes into it. Almost like escaping into its own realm. Dinner and breakfast were both terrific. I found this ryokan to be a little more corporate and hands off when compared to other ones. I believe that was aggravated by the fact that the staff was not totally comfortable with English. As foreigners who don’t know much about the appropriate etiquette it always felt like we were out of place and there was little to no guidance on the experiences. Also our room had very explicitly stained rugs, which were a big turn off for the whole experience.
- Ocampo (10/5): Like staying in a museum, every view is captivating. - The breakfast is extraordinary, we are talking about a real Japanese breakfast. But dinner... dinner is an event in itself, nine courses, carefully designed down to the last detail. There will be dishes you won't know whether to touch or just look at. The location is exceptional, buildings surrounded by forest with a landscape design that surpasses everything you can see in the photos, I have traveled to Italy, France, etc, and this is the most incredible private garden I have ever seen in my life. In fact the entire building is like a museum. Anyone who might complain about "the bed" or "it looks old" is mistaken, is choosing the wrong place, that person may need a Hilton or another typical chain hotel. This is a building that is considered a heritage site in Japan. And the staff, the staff also exceeds all expectations of friendliness. We travel with two children, including one of 5 years, and it is not normal for so many attention, such as bringing a blanket - without asking for it - in case the child was cold during dinner. Sanyo-so was the best part of one of the best trips of our lives. EDIT. I just found that the Sanyo-so garden was designed by Japanese garden artist Jihei Ogawa, several of his works are registered by the government as an Important Cultural Property. And many of the buildings were designed by architect Togo Murano -recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit, considered equivalent to the highest rank (Grand Cordon) of the Order of the Rising Sun-. So no, this is NOT just any building, it is not a building for those looking for a typical Hilton, it is a masterpiece of Japanese design. There are no complaints, zero, none.

- Robert (3/5): Beautiful gardens, outdated facilities that need attention. I would not recommend it at any price. - Beautiful grounds. The gardens were beautiful. The staff were nice, but not the friendliest. The two gentlemen that helped us with our luggage on arrival and departure acted as though we were an inconvenience to them. The staff at the restaurant and the service were very nice. The quality of the food was good. The rooms are dated. The cabinets in our bathroom were chipped and cracked . The shower are had cracks in concrete and tiles were falling off. I woke up one night to change the temperature in our room because it was too hot. The thermostat didn’t seem to work. When I woke up I found cockroaches walking around on the floor. I killed one with my shoe. I took a picture to prove this happened because I almost asked for a refund and wanted to check out at 3 in the morning. I didn’t tell my wife because I knew she would be upset to hear this. The wine selection was embarrassing. Very little to choose from. The common are for the spa/onsen/hot tub was very old.

The bathroom is dirty; one of the sink has lots of short hair from previous guests; one of the haori smells bad and has stain on the collar; In the bedroom the wall paper above both headboards is disgusting; overall the bedroom is very dusty, and the wall paper needs to be replaced; The sakura dinner set is underwhelming, considering the price of the stay is not cheap.

- Dg (4/5): disapointing - The booking website only specifies in small letters that the meal should be ordered separately, this is very uncommon in Ryokans. In most, the breakfast and dinner are included. It was almost impossible to find a restaurant nearby. We had to twist the staff hands to include us in the dinner and breakfast - they were also not flexible with dietary requirement - which is the 1st time having such as experience in Japan. I used to live in Japan.
