Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): - Please note that this review is for the Hotel Solar do Bom Jesus in Santa Cruz - I was asked to move to this hotel when Hotel Amparo requested that I move to their sister hotel due to short-notice issues with the hotel. This was fine for me and it was handled very well by both hotels.
- FABRIZIO (8/5): - Rapporto qualità prezzo perfetto
- Paul (6/5): - Friendly helpful staff. Our stay was in an apartment, quite large but dated.
Easy parking and convenient to airport
- Orianna (2/5): - TERRIBLE!!! I couldn’t check in because there is no one at the reception for late check in and also was told that they would leave a key to enter but it was nowhere to be found!!
- Marvin (4/5): - Never had such a bad hotel, almost everything was so much used an very everything was so dirty. Even insects in the food… very disgusting. Never ever again.
- Pauline (8/5): - Great for one night near the airport
- Thaddeus (2/5): - This might be the worst hotel l've ever stayed in. The room was so filthy it looked like Helen Keller had been in charge of cleaning. There's no way anyone could see the state it was in and think it was acceptable. Stains, dirt, BLACK MOLD and a smell that made us question if the place had ever been cleaned. My girlfriend and I had to black out just to survive the night.
Free Parking is a joke-it's a 10-minute walk away, which makes dragging your luggage through a sketchy area even worse. Honestly, you'd be better off sleeping on the streets with the homeless. At least you'd know what you're getting into.
Stay anywhere else. This place is a nightmare.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotels.com says its a 3star Hotel. But its a 2star hotel. Very close to the beach.
- Robert (8/5): - I pleased with both hotel and it's staffing. A simple, well dwelling exactly what I was looking for.
- Andreas (8/5): - Tolle Lage im Ortskern, am Wasser,
Preis- Leitungs-Verhältnis war in Ordnu g, Bett leider durchgelegen.
- Tomas (8/5): - Nice room, helpfull staff
- Kriti (6/5): - There is no parking, despite what the description says. If the manager had not given me her personal space, which was very nice of her, you can’t bring a car to this hotel. Public parking is there but always full. Very dated and basic, but you might compare to the price.
- Frederik (10/5): - nice quit place, good breakfast, away from the crowded Funchal
- WENDY (8/5): Nice hotel - I was only here overnight as near airport and arrived on late flight but it was fine apart from finding front door as I had to access a keysafe to get in .
- Richard (8/5): - Cheap hotel and it did not exceed expectations. But it was super cheap and it suited us down to the ground for the first night on Madeira. For the price I can’t fault it.
- Carlos (4/5): - They show 3 star but is only 2 the said parking e far way from hotel and brasfast is basic
- Nikki (6/5): A few little things not quite true. - The details of the hotel say free on site parking. There is no parking at the hotel. The only parking is metered on the road.
The details also say coffee and tea available. There is no coffee or tea in the rooms and when we asked for a cup of coffee we were told the machine was broken. The machine worked by breakfast time.
The beds were comfortable.
Sauber. Sehr gutes Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis.
- David (4/5): - Property is very dated and all fixtures are in need of replacement including the mattress, bathroom fittings, floor, curtains. On site parking is NOT available as advertised and to get free parking you need to park at the Marina several hundred yards away.
- Stephan (10/5): - Very kind people, cosy place.
- CATALIN (10/5): - Right in the middle of everything
- Ana (2/5): - Didn't know had to check in by 6pm because after that time there's no one at reception desk. Was scheduled to arrive around 2pm but flight delays pushed time past 6pm. The lady stayed until I arrived....appx 6:20.... but was visibly upset... very short with me. Didn't offer to give me WiFi password and was not available inside the room. Concert across the street started at 11pm... lasted two hours.
- Marc (6/5): - Very nice location.
Older hôtel, a little noisy.
Friendy staff.
- Peter (10/5): - In the heart of town. Close to everything. Everything in this nice Hotel is just perfect. Outstanding is the breakfast.
- Emy (8/5): Good hotel for short stay - We stayed for one night given we wanted to be close to the airport. Hotel is well located, right in front of a taxi center, which was convenient, and close to a bunch of restaurants and beach. Hotel is older than what it looks like in the pictures, but it was clean overall. Fan in the room was not working and many of the outlets were broken. It was ok for one night and the staff was very friendly. Would need a little refresh, but overall it was good for the price and what we needed.
- Margaret (8/5): - Simple family run hotel. Clean and basic. Could use a little updating but we enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was a great selection of meat, cheese, local speciality baked goods, yogurt, cereal and fresh juices. We arrived late and they have a lock box system for picking up your keys. worked great. We selected staying in Machico our first night in Madeira due to our late night arrival. It is a great choice for that - less than 10minutes from the airport by taxi. In the middle of the night with luggage it was 15e. Machico is a cute little town with a very nice beach. Close to some great hikes. Of course, pretty much anywhere in Madeira is close to great hikes!! We would stay here again.
- zbigniew (10/5): - Ok.
- Tonino Roberto (8/5): Good little hotel in machico - The hotel is good, just needs a bit of maintenance here and there. Clean but the furniture are a bit old.
Overall I had a good stay. Breakfast is good as well!
- Malgorzata (8/5): This is nice little hotel perfect for short stay. - This is nice little hotel perfect for short stay.
The breakfast was standard, not much choice. Its located nearby the beach. There are few restaurants and shops around which is convenient.
- Jean (6/5): - Broken shower, burnt out light in bathroom, large patch on floor not varnished, tiny room and bathroom. Breakfast ok but had to sit at designated table even when room is empty.
- ANA (8/5): - Spend a week there the beds were
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean. Comfortable. Good location. No kettle/drink making facilities in room
- PETER (10/5): Good hotel in Machico - We had previously emailed the hotel that we were arriving on a late-night flight, and got their acknowledgement - they were ready for us. Breakfast and dinner reasonable. English not their strong suit, but staff all friendly and helpful. Good location near port, cafes, laundromat (not self-service) and cell phone providers (for local SIM card).
- Michael (8/5): Great spot - Location excellent..my wife loved the food..staff like all madierans great...book it it's not dear...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice hotel next to the square plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance
- VIP (10/5): - Very helpful and friendly staff. Basic but very clean room. Good food and restaurant.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location and staff service - The hotel was located in a good place, close to all things, for example, coffee shops, beach, supermarket etc
- Verified traveler (10/5): Charming and Spotless - My room, #5 was lovely—providing a good amount of space, a charming balcony and a large and spotless bathroom.
- Chris (8/5): Great location - Amparo is in a great location - close to many things: the beach, opposite an amazing ice cream shop, bus station, supermarket, and great places to eat!
Although we booked a double bedroom, we go two single beds put together - it was okay. Plenty of room anyway! Was a bit warm - could've done with a fan but not many places in Machico have a fan? It's windy enough on the beach!
Breakfast was as expected for a continental - lots of bread and a selection of cold meat, and cheese.
Staff did a good job at cleaning everyday - came back to my nighty folded on the bed in nice shapes! But not quite sure why they changed our towels everyday, despite our efforts of hanging it up to dry to save them from washing it everyday.
Apart from that, great location with free parking less than 5 minute walk from the hotel so it was handy being able to explore all of Madeira!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good place, good times - Lovely place, very friendly service.
Perfect for budget travelers
- Gonzalo (10/5): Friendly atmosphere. - Very pleased with my choice.Friendly and approachable staff, helpful all the time. The location is perfect for lying on the beach or explore the mountains.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Weekend Amparo - Hotel is very pictures and look better in person. Great room size okay for long weekend stay. In bathroom needs more higher level in the standard cleaning with areas shower head and tiles. Housekeeping was great work & good quality. It was really great locally beautiful village machico easy travelling around Madeira by bus or car. Staff's at breakfast and evening meal. excellent service and chooses. Overall star three and half star. Yes I would return to visit on busy seasonal time.
- Brent (8/5): Great area. - We stayed just a few nights but had a good stay. 100 yards from a rock beach with great views. A charming old European village feel. Lots of shops nearby and restaurants. 15 min to Funchal. Was a clean and decent room. Was a very quiet hotel. Owners live on site. English is fair and were very nice. She did seem to get upset if you came close to the time breakfast ended. I would stay here again. It's good for a place to sleep and better for local to explore the island.
- Dave (8/5): Does the job - Simple breakfast, without boiled or scrambled eggs, but plenty to eat. Onsite restaurant too.
Was able to lock my bag to the banister after checking out, otherwise left luggage is insecure in entrance hall.
Nice room and décor, nice bed, working shower, in centre, close to taxi roundabout, bus stop (E1.30 to airport), right next to fort which is on the beach. Convenient for bus station and supermarkets.
Only complaint was the cleaner breached my security by leaving my room door wide open and she was off the floor at the time. I trust the manager will take note of this.
You can take several day hikes from Machico, especially if you use buses. Stops display clear timetables.
Go to the beach and see the sunrise out of the ocean. 2mins if that.
