Guest Reviews
- tonyd7828 (10/5): A great experience and a great view of Mt. Fuji - We stayed at the Nippondaira for one night during our trip through Japan, and it was a unique experience. Our room was classical Japanese-style with tatami mats in all rooms (except the bathroom). My wife's mother was also on this trip with us, and she said that she did not have this kind of room, so I guess it is not available throughout. The room was open concept with the bedroom (with twin-plus-sized beds) opening into a large living area dominated by a tea table and chairs. The outside wall was actually all glass with a door to the balcony (with sandals placed outside). The real draw for this room, and the hotel in general, is that it is located on a hilltop and faces Mt. Fuji. We were lucky and the clouds lifted enough that we were eventually able to see the peak which was absolutely a great experience.
There are several restaurants in the hotel, and we had a special seven course dinner (arranged by our tour guide company) in, I believe, the Terrace Restaurant. This was another singular experience for us, as the food and service was exceptional.
Any extended trip to Japan (we were there two weeks) should include a trip to Shizuoka to get a glimpse, albeit a distant one, of Mt. Fuji, and the Nippondaira should be where you should stay.
- 608AnneM (10/5): What a treat! - It was wonderful to walk into my "superior Japanese-style room" and see Mt Fuji right there through the glass across the bay! The weather was kind for my two-night stay, and I was able to see Fuji-san the whole time I was there, whether from my bedroom, living room or balcony, or from elsewhere in or outside the hotel. As a photography enthusiast, I was very happy with the views I was able to capture. The experience was a major highlight of my 6.5 week trip.
The accommodation itself was great, very spacious, well-designed and aesthetically pleasing. Comfortable twin beds, good lighting and storage space, a living area with a Japanese table and four seats, all glass on the bay side to maximise the view, big tv, coffee machine with quality tea and coffee capsules as well as Japanese tea-making equipment, well-stocked mini-bar, safe, yukata, pyjamas and slippers...large bathing area with dual sinks, seating and the bath with the shower, and the toilet in separate rooms. An exquisite little bonsai plant. Wifi worked perfectly. There were sliding doors between the living area and bedroom for cosier sleeping.
The hotel has six restaurants as well as a shop selling souvenirs and foodstuffs, and a spa. Travelling solo I often order room service or buy a meal to eat in my room, but that wasn't possible here and I found I enjoyed eating in "The Terrace" - excellent food and service, relaxed atmosphere and another Mt Fuji view. (I would've liked to try one of the Japanese restaurants, but I thought the set courses might be too much food for me.) I did buy some delicious biscuits from the shop to have in my room with a tea or coffee. The breakfasts, also in The Terrace, were very good.
The hotel's a lovely place to walk around, beautifully designed and pleasingly, sparingly ornamented, accented by some impressive bonsai. The Christmas decorations were nice too! There's an extensive outdoor/garden area. The staff were unfailingly courteous and helpful. There were no problems with luggage forwarding, and my departure taxi arrived before time.
There's a free shuttle bus between the hotel, Higashi Shizuoka Station and Shizuoka Station. Hours vary - the first one into the downtown leaves around 10am. It takes 30-40 minutes and is a good way to go back and forth if you don't have your own vehicle. From the hotel you can walk to Kunōzan Tōshō-gū, Tokugawa Ieyasu's resting place.
It was an absolute treat to stay at the Nippondaira, and I unreservedly recommend it!
- BigFurryOaf (10/5): Best experience combining dining and views of Shizuoka - We had lunch in the Nippondaira Hotel's Upper Lounge and it was amazing. Mt Fuji was not visible on the day however the overall view and experience was simply world class.
The service was outstanding and the food, which you can get individual plates or sets (with coffee and cake), was superb.
There also looked to be an option to get high tea which they serve on the lower levels, although this may have been due to other factors.
Overall, despite the rain and visibility, I would absolutely recommend this place as a location for a special combined lunch and viewing both from the restaurant and the Nihondaira Yume Terrace viewing platform just a few hundred metres away.
We hope to come back on day as guests of the hotel next time.
- michaelc679 (10/5): Beautifully maintained hotel - We chose to stay here because we wanted to see Mount Fuji.
The hotel is very well maintained and shows the clean line architecture of the building and surrounding.
Minimal English spoken but you will get by. Checkin was a breeze and the staff were super helpful with the luggages and welcoming.
The room was clean and well maintained. We had lunch at the teppanyaki restaurant MUKU and it was one of the best we had. We also had dinner at the terrace and the food was just okay.
Will definitely return if the weather permits as sometimes Fuji San can be very shy.
- JBchina (6/5): Very average hotel - Very limited information on surrounding area. Hotel does not have swimming pool or gym. Breakfast is limited and many dishes were left empty even 30 minutes before the buffet closed. Pastry’s were dry Poor supervision of the buffet. No apology given when problems pointed out to staff
- TimP549 (10/5): This hotel is stunning. - Found this hotel by chance really but suspect week known locally. I wanted to stay near Mt Fuji and this came up albeit not in Fuji itself. The web site was little difficult from outside Japan but was pre reopening after covid period. But accepted booking by email.
The impression when you arrive is amazing. Fantastic service and the view when you walk in incredible. Shizuoka city and then Fuji. Incredible. The grounds are amazing and room large and spacious and full window looking out across the view. Dinner options were also excellent as their are 4 different areas to eat. Prices quite reasonable and service again highest level. You don’t really have to leave the hotel and you can just sit and take in the view sipping something nice.
It is worth noting though that just to the back of the hotel is a lookout and many waking paths that can take you to a sky train, shrine or down into the city.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Marina (8/5): Perfect view of Mt Fuji but hotel too Internationa - Beautiful view of Mt Fuji but very International hôtel that lack the Japanese touch.
Ceylan teas in the room instead of Japanese teas, for breakfast, jams in plastic containers like in a US diner...
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Spring (10/5): - The gorgeous view of the Fuji mountain. Stunning. Very happy stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Jingyi (10/5): - The location of the hotel is great, on a hill with grand view of Fuji mountain. I booked a room facing Fuji, and captured the moment of Fuji in pink at sunrise. That was amazing! Breakfast is good with a lot of choice. Having breakfast with a view of Fuji is an incredible experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Yoshimitsu (10/5): Highly Recommended - The first time staying at this hotel, which I was astonished by the view I had from my room! Unfortunately, it was cloudy, which prevented me from seeing the Mt. Fuji. But, the overall experience was excellent!
- Keivan (10/5): Hidden gem in Nihondaira - Great luxury hotel in a quiet area with amazin view of Fuji. Completely surprised by the quality of the breakfast. Will definitely go back here!
- HARRY (8/5): - Hotel & expansive open lawns & walkways offer fantastic unobstructed views of Mt Fuji (weather permitting). Hotel's location, up on a large hill top (45 minutes by all day hotel shuttle from Shizuoka Station), is not for everyone. You go there to see Mt Fuji ... not to shop.
But it is a clean, modern hotel with expansive 2 story plate glass windows providing breath taking views of Mt Fuji from lobby, dining areas & all public areas. Half of the hotel rooms have open balconies that face Mt. Fuji, for morning to evening views. Toshogu Shrine & ropeway are 3 minute shuttle ride or 15 minute walk.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A Stunning Hotel - One of the most beautiful hotels I have ever stayed at. From the stunning views, to exquisite rooms, it was the highlight of our trip to Japan.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best view of Mt Fuji ever! - The view was magnificent. It was magic both day and night. It would be great if they sell bottles of wine at their hotel kiosk as there are foreigners like me who can’t drink Sake.
- judy (10/5): Beautiful hotel in amazing spot. - We loved staying here. Everyone so kind to us and very helpful with arranging ferry travel the next day. Cocktails on the upper terrace a simply superb experience; looking into the velvety night sky and city lights below. We simply couldn't fault any aspect of this simply beautiful hotel.
- Thomasq (10/5): Magnificent view and good service - Speechless!! When you wake up and the Mount Fuji is right in front of you.
- Lisa (10/5): Amazing views of Mt. Fuji - It was our first visit to Japan (mother daughter trip) to see friends in Shizuoka. They recommended the Nippondaira Hotel. The hotel staff are very friendly and spoke English. Started first day with a traditional Japanese breakfast at the Japanese hotel restaurant. Staff was kind when we asked for details about the breakfast assortment that arrived before us. Rooms are large and have fantastic views of Mt. Fuji. The hotel is also located next to the Ropway to the Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. We visited in an hour and a half before our departure to Kyoto. Lovely way to start our Japanese adventure! Would definitely stay again.
- Catherine (10/5): Fabulous view overlooking Shizuoka and Mount Fuji - Very helpful staff considering my Japanese is virtually non existent. Help at reception and the restaurant too.Food was superb.
- Verified traveler (10/5): excellent view, not very internationalized though - The view of Fuji Mountain was impeccable and unforgettable. However, the hotel is not very internationalized. the reasons are: 1. They don't have a gym 2. they don't have room service and the pre fixed menu start from JPY10,000 and 13,000 per person. 3. the signs are all Japanese. I think the rooms are great but if i was going to stay there for more days, i would need more facilities. The lobby shop doesn't have much food or drinks either.
