Guest Reviews
- d (2/5): - Avoid, Avoid, Avoid! I arrived at the hotel only to find they had no rooms left, despite that i had already booked and paid online. After a long while trying to explain this to a receptionist who spoke zero English, he put me onto his boss on the phone who spoke a little english. This character advised me to cancel my booking online so I would get my money back, and said he would arrange that I could stay at a nearby hotel called Agor.
I couldn't not find the Agor hotel and was left to wander the streets at 1 am looking for another room. There were a number of other hotels in the area, but all were full. This was very stressful, particularly as I was exhausted from my flight and panicking that I might have to sleep on the streets!
I eventually did find a room at another hotel at 2am. The next day, I learnt that the Agor had closed down some time ago. The person I spoke to on the phone at the Golden Hotel must have known this and lied simply to get rid of me. Also, I wasn't able to cancel my booking there as it was too late, and I didn't get my money back.
This was a really upsetting experience. Its disgusting that this establishment treats people in such a way. It is also worth noting that, though I didn't see a room inside the Golden, the building, the lobby and furnishings were very shabby and dirty, the other hotels I saw were much nicer.
- Z2755SDmohammedh (10/5): Good experience at the Golden Hotel - Golden Hotel is a great place in midtown Cairo. I booked for 4 nights initially. I liked this comfortable hotel and its very friendly staff, so I decided to stay for whole duration of my visit to Egypt - two months.
Clean, convenient location, good rates, friendly helpful staff.
I highly recommend this hotel.
- 162AG (4/5): Very bad accommodation in a perfect location near Tahrir square - Pros : Walking distance to Nile riverfront, Tahrir square, Lots of restaurant, Cairo metro
Cons : Many many cons -
Property is under renovation (was in Nov 2024) and they do not reveal this. When I say under renovation - every room is being re done. So there's a lot of junk etc around and things are not fully functional or ready for stay.
We stayed in 2 rooms during our stay
502 - AC makes very loud noise. We couldn't sleep most nights and ultimately turned it off for the rest of the stay.
302 - transparent bathroom door. So if you are sharing the room with someone - they will have to step out everytime you take a shower !!
Overall :
Breakfast is meagre - 2 slices of bread. Some days they did not have butter too.
Property is dark and with junk all over it is a nightmare trying to step out of your room.
I won't recommend this friends and family. So decide.
- Angel (10/5): - Muy buena atención personal profesional, cerca de todo.
- Guy (8/5): - Clean facilities and well taken care of... The staff is really polite and always ready to offer support as needed
- Agnieszka (2/5): - I booked this property based on ratings and reviews but as I found out the reviews had little in common with the reality. The hotel supposedly offers smoke free rooms and sound proofing but neither of these statements is accurate. I smelled smoke in my room at all hours including at night. I don’t know how it gets to the room but I’m asthmatic and that exposure to smoke resulted in a number of asthma-driven bouts of cough. It was very noisy despite my room being away from the street. No soundproofing whatsoever! There was a window installed air conditioner unit. Per the owner it was only to be turned on when the guest is in the room. At night it got so hot that it was unbearable and I couldn’t sleep. I tried to set a lower temperature but it didn’t work. I slept maybe 3 hrs at most and so when in the morning the owner asked how I was, I mentioned the above problems. Cigarette in his hand, exhaling the smoke he said he had no idea where the smoke could have been coming from.
Also, the room was not very clean. One light switch was so gross I couldn’t bring myself to touch it. There were stains of unknown origin, in different colors, on the wall. The sheets were clean. The floor and the bathroom seemed to have been cleaned. As far as safety goes: it is located in a pretty safe part of town. But the building is dilapidated. One window in the stairwell has sharp-edge broken glass. In the bathroom a big and heavy water heater installed right above the toilet. I don’t recommend it
- Ronald (10/5): - This hotel is well established and centrally located in Downtown Cairo.Although it des not present well from the street ,it is well appointed once you reach front desk of 3rd floor via classic lift..I would strongly recommend it in this price range....
- Ronald (10/5): - would highly recommend this hotel
- Miriam (8/5): - Rooms were clean. There are many shops around the hotel.
- Alisa (10/5): Great place near everything - Great stay at the Golden Hotel, it has perfect location and friendly staff. Room I stayed was quiet and clean, bed was comfortable and with AC you can sleep well. Warmly recommend to short and longer stay!
- hibbada (8/5): Great location and friendly staff make for a pleasant stay at this hotel - My wife and I stayed at the Golden hotel on 4 separate occasions during our 3 week trip to Egypt and Rwanda. The hotel is in an excellent downtown location with an easy walk to the Egyptian museum as well to many restaurants and cafes. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff very friendly. Nabil went out of his way to made sure we had a pleasant stay at the hotel and a pleasant experience in Cairo. Thank you also to Salah who patiently answered all my booking enquires.
- Grato (10/5): Amazing property - Perfect location, big room, lots of shops and restaurants in the area.
In the heart of the city.
Loved my stay
- MARIO ALFREDO (10/5): - Property was excellent. Mostafa, Bassem and Marone, they are excellent people. Navil is owner all time help us. I recommended. If some body going to Cairo, Golden Hotel is best option.
- Glenn (10/5): - Very attentive staff. Great location
- Guide50498411993 (10/5): Superb place ideally located! - If you are looking for somewhere cheap to just lay your head down for the night, this is the place. Clean, ideally located to the Museum and with restaurants and bars close by. Do not be put off by the surroundings. Locals quickly get used to you
- AKM (4/5): - I was booked this hotel room for 3 days staying but able to stay 1 day. The hotel rooms were on the 5/6 floor. The elevator was broken, had to climb the stairs with my two heavy luggage’s.
The room was dirty bathroom, floor.
Also one thing that I have to mention is, the room had strong odor that is not tolerable smells.
I know I paid less for the hotel, but this hotel was not in condition to staying.
Customer service was good. I was not worried about the breakfast. The hotel in on a good convenience place.
- erhhoadley (10/5): Friendly staff , convenient downtown location - amazing value - I have been traveling to Egypt every year since 2007 and for the past 9 years I have stayed at the Golden Hotel whenever I’m in Cairo. The rooms and bedding are comfortable and spotless. Hot water, air conditioning and Wi-Fi all work great. Breakfast includes fresh fruit, an omlette, toast, jam, yogurt and tea or coffee. Best of all the owner and staff are very welcoming and accommodating.
The downtown location can’t be beat making it an easy walk to the Corniche, the Egyptian Museum, the American University in Cairo bookstore, Abdeen Palace and lots of restaurants and shops. A slightly longer walk of 20-30 minutes will get you to the Islamic Art Museum, Bab Zuweila, and the Street of the Tentmakers. It’s only a bit more than a 5 minute walk to the Sadat metro station at Tahrir Square to get you to most other destinations.
Modest prices make the Golden Hotel a great value - don’t hesitate to book a room!

- HenryH2286 (8/5): Great downtown hotel - This is a really great budget hotel. The location is very convenient with everything you need nearby. The entrance and stairs can be a little intimidating (especially if arriving at night), but just a few floors up you are greeted by very warm and helpful staff. I think the room we stayed in was recently updated with a new bathroom and everything worked really well! (not the case in our other Cairo hotel). Breakfast was delicious - would definitely stay again.
- Supadappa (8/5): Good budget choice, but no breakfast provided (as stated in booking.) - Golden Hotel is right in the heart of downtown Cairo's action. A short walk to Tahir square, the museum and the metro. Be warned, downtown is noisy. And you take your life into your hands every time you cross the road.
Staff were friendly and welcoming. The English spoken ranged from excellent to passable.
Room was fairly small but cosy. The small bathroom was ok, just a sectioned off part of the room, hot water a bit patchy. No ventilation of it's own. There was a balcony, tv and fridge (not stocked with drinks as the booking site suggested.) The wifi did not work especially well, but I was later to discover that this was the best I'd find in any hotel in Egypt.
They picked me up from the airport and also took me on a couple of other trips (Giza and Saqqara.)
My only real issue with the place was the lack of breakfast. They said this was due to corona. I have tried to verify this but have not been able to. My booking on Hotels.com stated breakfast was included. They said they had tried to get this changed but had not managed to do so. I just just checked again now (stayed there a couple of weeks ago) and it still states breakfast is included. So I would suggest that they are not trying very hard. This basically constitutes false advertising. There was no restaurant either (booking site said there was.) The owner told me I could buy a cup of coffee if I wanted. I took this as a slap in the face, I had paid for breakfast and should have had a discount, let alone pay for coffee. Would I have stayed here had I realised there wasn't any breakfast? Probably not, it's a hassle going to find food before one starts one's day of site seeing. But I wasn't gonna move once I was there. I would check this out before booking.
Aside from the breakfast issue, this is a solid option.
- LittleHavanaGringo (10/5): Golden Hotel Cairo – 3- to 4-star hotel that offers 10-star service at backpacker prices - Golden Hotel, in the perfect location in Downtown Cairo, consistently gave me better service than many $300+ USD per night, 5-star (in terms of full amenities, not rating) hotels have.
It’s one of those places where you are treated like family and leave feeling like the owner and staff members are part of your extended family.
Maybe the Golden isn’t for everyone. If you MUST have a property with 5 on-site restaurants, a cookie-cutter characterless room in an ugly hulking building with prices soaring near $200 (sky high for Cairo) – then book a chain hotel and drop well more than $2K for 10 day’s stay.
If you want to feel the vibe of the city, experience unique interiors, stay in a building with a façade worthy of the grandest arrondissement in Paris, talk to a wise owner who has stories about every corner of Egypt and benefit from a front desk manager so versed in hospitality that he will literally nurse you back to health – stay at Golden Hotel.
When I was researching the Golden online, I saw an average rating of 4+ of 5 stars and a lot of positive comments from people like me – who want a private room (not a youth hostel cot) but treasure the quirky.
Still, I was a little uneasy. The street looked very busy. The façade looked a little tired.
There were shops in the ground floor part of the building – would they be blaring music that kept me up?
The reviews mentioned an odd mix of retail, storage rooms, old apartments and a few hotel rooms carved out of a charming old Belle Epoch building.
Would the elevator be running 24/7, would it work at all?
Would there be street noises?
Would things be grimy?
Would there be hot water?
If so, how could they do all of that for at roughly $30 USD per night – including full breakfast, maid service, taxes and airport pick-up?
Anyone reading this instantly knows this was my first trip to Cairo.
To answer my own questions.
All of the core of Cairo is noisy. Traffic is some of the worst on earth and drivers (don’t believe me, watch the movie Cairo Drive) have their own language of endless horn honking.
Shops also are known for cranking up Egyptian Pop to draw customers – in harmony (cacophony?) with blaring car stereos.
Thankfully, the shops underneath my room had zero music at any time of day.
The car horns, yes, you could hear them even through the tightly-shut door to my balcony, but after my first night, I got used to them. They are only slightly crazier than New York.
And on the plus side, the hotel workers and other guests were super quiet at night, so even a light sleeper like me was able to catch sound slumber.
Is it grimy? Well, a combination of sand from the desert, car pollution, street vendors cooking all sorts of food and dust cast off by more than 20 million Cairenes – yes, the city is blanked in a bit of grime – but I saw Golden Hotel workers mopping stairs, hallways and every inch of common areas at a pace that would put a Ritz Carlton to shame.
Admittedly, from the street, the Golden does not wow you. There’s a not so glamorous sign wedged among the retail shop’s signage, a narrow entrance and a flight of more than a dozen stairs to reach an ancient elevator.
I’m used to elevators being flush with the ground floor entrance. That way, people who use wheelchair, walkers and crutches can access upper floors without doing the steps.
Well, there must be 100, maybe 10 times that many, beautiful old downtown Cairo buildings with the odd setup of enter, do the stairs, then enter a quirky but beautiful old cage elevator.
This is the kind of lift that doesn’t work unless you close the door tightly. But it looked to be refurbished, so it had the best of both worlds – old world appearance but modern upgrades for safety and stability.
Warm water? Oh, the times I have stayed in North Africa when promised hot water was rumored but never experienced.
Golden Hotel has a hot water tank in each room. It didn’t run forever, but it was plenty for a long, steamy shower. Plus, it quickly replenished more hot water in less than an hour.
The bathroom was clean and efficient. My room was not large, but very high ceilings, old world elegance and a lovely balcony looking out over famous Talaat Harb street kept me from ever even remotely feeling claustrophobic.
The bed was super comfortable. It was just semi firm enough to rival the best beds I’ve slept on in major cities where the going rate was more than 10 times Golden’s.
There were plenty of outlets for recharging phone, camera, etc. – and super convenient night stands on each side.
A dorm-sized fridge ran whisper quiet and was perfect for stocking up at the corner store and chilling bottled water, soda, milk, leftovers, desserts. And you will want to drink from a bottle – one that you can tell has a seal that is not broken – Cairo tap water will give you the runs…even if you use it to rinse your toothbrush.
A very interesting contraption of wooden forms – almost like the old LP crates, for those of you old enough to have collected vinyl in college – made for an efficient way of story my clothes on hangers, suitcase up top, daily finds, medicines and much more.
There was a nice flat screen TV, but I really didn’t use it much. Better still was a remote-controlled AC unit…which also had heat, which I used more because I was there in the last month of winter and after midnight in the desert is chilly.
Breakfasts offered toast, butter, jam, yogurt, eggs, cheese, fruit and more – though I usually went for just a simple toast and coffee combo.
- jimmZ8209JP (10/5): Great location and friendly staff - This was a nice low priced hotel in a perfect downtown Cairo location. Walking distance to many places to eat and things to do. The staff were all very friendly and provided a free breakfast. The beds were nice, and the rooms had a small refrigerator and free Wi-Fi
- mothersearthhoney (8/5): Cozy - The price is right but it's so loud (I'm sure the whole city is loud!) We reserved a particular room on our way back through but when we showed up, it wasn't available, so that wasn't cool. BUT, they did let us check in early so that was nice.
- LexiSpain (10/5): Fabulous place in Cairo - I spent 2 nights here and thought the room and the bathroom were great. Nice sheets and very hot water. The heating worked also. A step up from the Osiris Hotel. The location on Talat al Harb was very convenient and as everywhere in Egypt the staff were very friendly and helpful. The wifi was excellent too.
- MianiaFlicqev (8/5): Stay Comfortable !!! - I stayed in this hotel for 3 different days match by my itinerary, They are very welcoming.I have to not spend too much time in reservation they are quite fast and responsive. The thing is room is quite big and bed and pillow are much comfortable. Nice hotel.
- 1940mossy (8/5): A gem - This little hotel is hidden away but deserves high praise. Clean, comfortable and friendly staff. They will collect you from the airport and buy train tickets for you. heir advice also is sound and wide spread
- golnark2018 (10/5): Two great nights in Golden Hotel Cairo - Had a great two nights in Cairo at Golden hotel.
The rooms are clean and comfortable but the highlight of the hotel is about their staff. They are nice, kind, friendly and passionate about their job making you feel like you are at home. They did not treat me as a customer but more as their personal guest at their home. Through my stay at Golden hotel, I learned about Egyptian culture, life, history and ...
I really enjoyed having tea and a great chat with them.
Thanks to Ahmad, the very friendly receptionist, for all his great advice, and care all his help for my trip in Sharm El Sheikh, thanks to the other nice receptionists that unfortynately, I forgot to ask his name, for his welcoming attitude, kind service and for caming out of his way to prepare my breakfast much earlier than his schedule for my early morning flight.
I am looking forward to come back to Cairo and will definitely stay at Golden hotel Cairo.
- jennasypr (10/5): I really love this hotel - I’ve stayed in this hotel for 5 separate days as I was traveling around Egypt.
The building, just like any other building around town, is old, but rooms don’t feel old. They are very clean spacious, each have a private bathroom, hot shower, a/c and fridge. In addition, the rooms are very well kept and maintained. The bed and pillows are very comfortable as well.
What I love most about the hotel though is the location. It is in Talaat Harb street, where there are plentiful restaurants, and juice and snack shops. Moreover, it is only a stone throw away from Taharir Square where the Egyptian Museum and the Go Bus station are. It is very safe in the area as it is in the center. It gets busy at night, and I can safely walk around town.
With regards to the staff, they are very accommodating. I have left my baggages with them for days without any cost. They were helpful when I was doing my itinerary too.
Lastly, for the cleanliness, spaciousness, location, and service, the price is very reasonable and affordable. (Other hotels along the street costs twice as much!!) I have recommended the hotel to my American tourist friends, and to an Egyptian family of 4 from Sharm El Sheikh. And just like me, they’ve stayed and were satisfied with the hotel.
- 365reya (10/5): Excellent staff and quality rooms - This hotel exceeded my expectations. Before arriving for my trip, I emailed back and forth with the owner to discuss hotel pick up and guided tours during my stay. He was very friendly and responded promptly. This made me feel more comfortable upon my arrival.
When I finally got in (at 1:30am) a driver met me at the airport. Back at the hotel, the owner himself was there to welcome me. He helped orient me to the hotel and to the area. He arranged for me two tours: pyramid tour and a city tour.
Any time I had a question, the staff were always there to answer and help me out. They went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. We had many good conversations about the things I saw during my tours.
I was very appreciative that I could book my tours right at the hotel. Plus, they arranged everything for me! Water, driver, guide, entrance fees, etc. The tour guide I had was incredible! She was incredibly knowledgable in everything about Cairo and Egypt. We had many wonderful conversations. I felt safe with her and the driver.
Breakfast was included each morning. It included eggs, juice, yogurt, and fruit.
The room was small but very comfortable. It included a small balcony. I only wish it had a dresser or some place for me to unpack my clothes. But other than that, the shower was wonderful and the bed very comfortable.
I really cannot speak highly enough of this establishment. Everyone that works there really went out of their way to make my trip a memorable one. I wish that I could have stayed longer. I look forward to being able to go back some day.
- 686rolandb (10/5): Very nice and clean small hotel with a beautiful roof terrace - We stayed there 6 people for 4 nights and spent an excellent time. The staff was very friendly, and helpful, the rooms have been recently refurbished, and everything was clean. The wifi was a bit slow but ok. We appreciated the terrace a lot, where we could bring our own food and drinks, and so could spend very nice evenings on top of the Talaat Street. The location is also perfect for visiting the Egypian Museum and for finding a good bakery and good restaurants in 5-10 minutes of walking distance.
- wikispeedia (8/5): Great location, Clean and Wonderful Staff - We loved this place. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. I wish they could be cloned. The building is old but very clean. The rooms are spacious and have bathrooms and many have balconies. Very affordable. I would stay there again for sure.
- karlhultum (10/5): Excellent - The hotel is clean and comfortable and the location is great. Breakfast was really nice and plenty of it.We always had warm water and no problems. All the staff are very friendly and warm people and made out stay the best.
Thank You. Karl
