Guest Reviews
- Heather (8/5): Budget stay - Compact like most hotels in Hong Kong, room was mostly clean. Was good for the night we needed.
- Sergio (8/5): - The hotel is very clean and well located. The young lady providing housekeeping services is very helpful. The room with a twin size bed is very small, but it is Hong Kong. Only disposable towels are provided. And only hot drinking water and a fridge are available. A/C and hot shower work really well.
- Haider (10/5): - Great overall experience, and great value for money.
- MariaZG1 (4/5): Too Small and not that clean. - Too small and uncomfortable. The building where is located is really ugly and people harass you as you walk in, did not make me feel safe at all. The only good thing is that it was cheap and close to the metro.
- davidwatson69end (6/5): cheap and central - If you are looking for a budget option and are willing to stay somewhere a little away from the main drag then this is a good choice. This hostel in located in Chungking Mansion on Nathan street. If you are unfamiliar with how mansions in asia work, then this will be a shock to you. It is located in a much larger building that is broken into towers with close to 20 floors. You enter on the ground floor and have to go through crowds of people and businesses to get to the elevator for your tower. This includes many people trying to solicit or sell many different things to you. The chungking mansion in particular is infamous for its age and criminal activity. Keeping this in mind, if you are aware of your surrounding and smart, you will be fine. Our room was very clean and functional with no issues. We shared a triple between two and there was enough room to move about and get ready etc. Compact and basic but I didn't expect anything else. Plenty of food options downstairs, mainly Indian, and a fantastic location with everything else nearby. No issues with lifts.. If you need somewhere cheap and central then I would recommend.
- Dalelushka (8/5): Short Trip - Clean room and accomodating staff
Very near the metro, restaurants, mall, supermarket, coffeeshops
Very secured with automated lock.
With free hot and cold water provided
Small room but it’s enough for a good night stay and rest.
Chungking Mansion ground floor might a little bit intimidating but everything is in there especially FOREX
- racheldB1330VB (6/5): Tight for space but all the amenities - Accommodation in Hong Kong is very expensive and as a solo traveler I was simply looking for somewhere to rest my head which I found in Maple Leaf! Downstairs in Chungking Mansion is very off putting for a girl traveling solo with shop-owners hawking their goods and in your face but once you get to your lift it’s plain sailing! The owner was very pleasant and really helpful! I’d advise ear plugs cause you hear everything but the bed was comfy, WiFi was good and hot water at the ready, what more could you need for a solo break??
- bernadetter896 (8/5): good overnight stay - We were welcomed by a nice lady taking care of the place. The room space was just enough for me and my 4 year old daughter and we had a comfortable overnight stay. There was a good wifi connection as well. This is recommended for a budget travel.
- Mike643922 (10/5): Good choice for budget travel - Yes the place is small, but if you're looking for a budget option and are willing to stay somewhere a little out of the ordinary then this is a good choice. Our room (the triple) was fully clean and functional with no issues. We shared between two and there was enough room to move about and get ready etc. Compact and basic but I didn't expect anything else. Plenty of food options downstairs, mainly Indian, and a fantastic location with everything else nearby. No issues with lifts. You do get hassled relentlessly by Indian guys at the main entrance to Chungking Mansions however you can see it as all part of the fun and the experience of staying there. If you need somewhere cheap and central then I would recommend.
- NaomiF1990 (8/5): Only downside is the entrance - We had no intention to spend much time in our room so having good views and lots of space wasn't high on priorities. Realistically as a backpacker nowhere in Hong Kong is particularly cheap but for a double room on a budget this is the standard. We had air con and our luggage squeezed under our bed. The bathroom was small but had hot running water which wasn't always needed anyway when it was so hot outside! They had a water tank and a fridge which was extremely handy too and saved some money on bottled water! The only downside is the mansion itself is so smelly and full of Indians that will pester you relentlessly on your way in and out. Aside of that the location itself is great for exploring as it is so close to the metro and only a short walk to the ferry terminal!
- Losttraveller (4/5): If you buy cheap...you get cheap... - its cheap...so i did not expect much...but having a room without a window and a Kitchen above your room that is working till 4 in the morning is not cheap but unbearable....
- M S Dhillon (6/5): Maple Leaf Guest House - Comfortable and clean budget hotel room with attached toilet.
Requires lift access to get to the budget hotel on the 12 floor.
Close to the MTR and Jenny's Biscuit outlet.
- Gaetan (6/5): Rapport qualité-prix correct. - Rapport qualité-prix correct.
- nadrahf2016 (4/5): Cheated. - We booked a double bed room for 6 nights and we arrived just to be informed that our room was occupied. We received a downgraded room instead of a similar or better room. Since most places were fully booked, we decided to just accept the offer (we travel during the lunar season). On the 3rd night of our stay, the personnel suggest that we paid extra 300hkd for the rest of our stay for the same room that we initially booked for. Just find somewhere else to book your room. There's a lot of other guest house in Chungking Mansion with better services. Basically, we were duped.
- Mark (10/5): Very good guest house, friendly personal staff - Excellent guest house for inexpensive stay in downtown Kowloon district of Hong Kong
- Lulu Stella (4/5): Mini kleines Zimmer in unangenehmer Umgebung.
- ceejayallen (6/5): A Rabbit Hutch - I arrived at the hotel at 1100 on 14 September 2016 only to find that my single room was not available. The reason; my credit card was not acceptable to the management because it was due to expire at the end of October. I retorted that the card was valid for a further six weeks, but the manageress was not interested.
She then offered me a double room for $HK300, $HK80 more than the room I had booked. If that was a double room I'd hate to have been in a single; it was quite literally six feet by six feet including the en suite toilet!
The hotel is part of a large complex, and none of the rooms (as far as I could tell) has any windows. Not the place for more than one night!
On the upside, the room was spotlessly clean, everything worked, and the free wifi signal was the strongest I've encountered in a hotel.
The are no meals with the room, but the ground floor of Chung King Mansions is taken up with small shops and eateries.
- paulj0rgeb (6/5): Nice place to stay. However.... - Room was good, clean and like other budget hostels in HK, small. The lady whose taking care of the room is accommodating, however she, and her husband, collected the payment for the hotel which I believed that has been collected by credit already. The location is great for exploring the city and is located at the Tsim Sha Tsui's busy Nathan road and MTR. Downside for the hotel is the location which took me around 1 hour to find the building and the hotel itself. The hotel is also masked in by Indian/Pakistani food stalls, which contributes to the overall stay "factor" for me. Will definitely stay again, but I recommend to stay in Mongkok.
- tigerpaw69 (8/5): Good value for money in Hong Kong - The room was very clean, host and staff were helpful and friendly. The room was tiny and had no windows, but apparently that's to be expected in Kong Kong. Location central and convenient, although the block seemed a bit dodgy...
Altogether, good value for money for Hong Kong!
- lekleking (6/5): clean guest house, dirty building - It was easy to find Chunking mansion, but not so easy to figure out how to get up there. The bottom floors are a sort of market and some areas are very dirty- I almost slipped and fell in literal crap. Maple Leaf itself is very clean and friendly- very small and basic accommodation, and good location. I would have paid a little extra for easier access and avoiding being harassed by people on the first floor.
- Verified traveler (2/5): -
- Blitzen123 (8/5): Great if your looking for location. Very basic - This was a great place to stay for a solo traveller. It has great wifi connection and the woman running it is brilliant.
There's a bus straight to and from the airport. Expect to be overwhelmed by the lads out the front. Just tell them you've already booked and PAID.... Make sure you know the BLOCK when you arrive (E) because no one knows the name of the guest house but they know the blocks.... Walk in through the front entrance turn right then turn immediate left at your next passageway... its the lift at the end on your right. If you are clostrophibic in anyway don't stay there. But it is very central.
- ChaDitz (8/5): good and peaceful - The room is clean and cosy since the owner really clean up the room everyday. She's very accommodating and friendly. If you need anything, she's very welcome to assist us on our needs. She offers less amount of Disneyland and Oceanpark tickets also.
Though the bad thing in here is that, this hostel is located in Chongking Mansion which is very scary due to people selling downstairs. :(
This was our first trip in HK with my family and I will say that I will recommend this hostel to everyone for its excellent service but just be careful for the people downstairs selling stuffs or something (just simply ignore them!)
- 1213224931 (10/5): Amazing place, good location for exploring the city. - “Very clean Very helpful staff Comfortable bed Space in guests refrigerator Drinking water supplied. I really like the place . The owner was very friendly and the room was very clean! Very centric! We were able to walk to the harbor or the city in 15 min! Amazing location.
- kirsttimms29 (6/5): Not as advertised - The room was extremely small. I understand this is common in Hong Kong. It was advertised with a fridge but this wasnt in the room. It very hard to find the entry to the guest house which was on the 12th floor acessing the elevator inside a market place which is normally very busy. I wouldnt recommend this place to solo woman travellers due to having to go through the market each time.
The one positive was the lady at the desk was very friendly and informative.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- martinlizard (10/5): Small but good - This is by far the smallest room i ever slept . Single room as big as double bed ..... Guesthouse was not easy to find , well hidden in an "indian" shopping mall . But would def. stay there again because of these 3 words : location + price + cleanliness. And brother and sister running the spot were friendly and helpful.
- SaurabhatMumbai (6/5): Decent Option - The hotel is managed by a helpful lady who really takes care of all the guests. The rooms are small as are all the other options in Hong Kong in budget category.
The hotel is on the main road situated in a shopping complex and ideal for solo/male travellers. Not the best option for couples though.
- Len (6/5): Very small for two, even after upgrading to larger - Very small for two, even after upgrading to larger room. Hosts are very helpful and keep the place very clean. Good location, except for those obnoxious touts.
- estuary (2/5): CON ARTIST - We arrived at 10:30 in the evening and the owner is there. She said that my card was invalid because she tried to claim the "No Show" fee (we sent an email when we arrived at the airport at 8:30). She offers another room because according to her, our room is small and add 150hkd.
Me: Just give us the key to the room and we'll see if we'll upgrade tomorrow.
Owner: Tomorrow is fully booked.
Me: We have limited budget. I can only pay the amount initially agreed.
Owner: You can pay tomorrow.
Me: We are so hungry and we have a child with us so please let us leave our bags and let us eat dinner.
Owner: The room is so small. The room for you is downstairs. Lots of noisy Indians, you have a baby, I want that you can rest.
Me: I am aware that the room and bed is small so please we want to rest now. (looking back, I should have bluffed this woman that I'll report her to the guard below or cancelled it on the spot.)
Owner: Okay, just add 50hkd (total of 550hkd) and I'll give you the room, tomorrow you transfer to a bigger room. Room 32 will checkout tomorrow.
We were able to eat our dinner at 11:15. She also asked about our schedule the next day not because she's interested with our itinerary but she is scheming to give our room to others while we are away. (this can be explained by the luggages seen by the other travellers who reviewed this guesthouse).
The husband told me to agree with the owner's offer so we can already rest and eat. So she gave us room 28 and she pointed that we'll transfer to room 32 the next day. She instructed us to leave our bags and key inside the room so that they can transfer it when we leave. The following day, we decided to stay in the current room because we're already settled. So, I called her.
Me: Good morning, Ma'am. We'll just stay in our current room, no need to transfer.
Owner: Of course, I gave you a big room. If you want to stay in that room, you have to pay 400hkd.
Me: But you said we'll move to room 32?
Owner: I told you, the room is small.
So I just hung up the phone and fixed our things.
When we arrived in the evening, she wasn't in the reception, I still have to call her to as where is our new room. We waited for another 30 minutes (really annoying) then her husband arrived. The husband has a few luggages with him, put in one of the rooms then lead us downstairs to Cynthia's Inn (10th floor). Smelly and dirty.
The owners of the guesthouse is worse than the shady people on the first floor. She did not issue any receipt and tries to get away by dismissing you immediately or pretend that you did not understand what she said.
I think she subcontracted our accommodation to a cheaper hostel.
NEVER AGAIN.
- Nidhogg003 (2/5): How the hell is this rated as very good on tripadvisor?? - This is my first time that a good reviewed place on tripadvisor let me down. I am not racist but the area this place is located is really dodgy full of Indians and other foreigners, most of which are constantly offering services and goods, especially at night. Access to this place is horrible with a single small slow lift used by a good quantity of people.
The room itself was small and almost nothing was provided except water and WiFi.
It wasn't expensive but due to the below rating we expected better,
