Guest Reviews
- gwenw469 (10/5): Great hotel/spa for getaways! - We love this quaint hotel/spa. My girlfriend group goes every year! Beautiful landscaping, lovely warm pools, side by side rooms with lots of patio space for gatherings. We usually get one kitchenette room but also a very short walk to the Main Street for restaurants and shopping. Great value!
- 501lizw (8/5): Annual Calistoga Girls Trip - What we love about Roman Spa: 1) the Pools, 2) the Gardens, 3) rooms with Kitchens, 4) the Spa. The resort has made several improvements over time which is really nice. We have been coming to this resort for several years.
- Seaside170677 (10/5): A Little Slice of Heaven - Roman Spa and Hot Springs is a little slice of heaven. For me, this place is perfect - comfortable, clean room, beautifully manicured grounds and that great pool. The pool defies description. It's so clean and warm and no chlorine smell; it's so relaxing and restorative, you don't want to get out. We have visited for several years on Mothers' Day and are already looking forward to our next visit.
- Vacation442568 (10/5): Excellent stay in Calistoga - Excellent property. The hot springs pool were lovely. Everything was so clean and well looked after. The restaurants and shops were very close. Good location if you don't have a car.
- 724juancarlosa (10/5): Hot Springs in the Rain - Had a great time—pools were warm and well maintained, and soaking in the hot springs while it rained made it even better.
- sheila33p (10/5): My Happy Place - The grounds are beautiful and flowers are always newly planted every season. It's a very calm, relaxing and quite place to spend a few days to get away from all the noise, and hustle and bustle of our world. You can park your car and never have to use it again until it's time to leave. Everything is close by: walk to town and visit all the friendly shops and dine out. It's a great value and if it's a massage you need it's just across the parking lot. This is a true gem.
- elizabethrX2217MD (10/5): Don't go to my Favorite spa! - Ssshhh! I don't want everyone to know about this fabulous spot! Two warm pools & hot tub; cozy rooms; gorgeous grounds; one block off the main street in Calistoga. A great quiet getaway for adults. We hardly leave the grounds when we visit.
- 819guliab (2/5): TERRIBLE! - It’s an absolutely horrible place! Aside from worn out facilities, poorly maintained outdated everything - when you feel
Like you are in 1970s but you have to pay $400 a night, aside from non functioning dirty sauna, aside from the fact there’s no breakfast or any restaurant. All that I can deal with easily but the staff is just terrible - rude and condescending. I made a mistake while booking and they ran after me trying to have a peaceful soak explaining how I need to pay $150 more! All in front of other people treating me with so much disrespect - truly terrible ! Never again will I stay here !
- unclet2026 (6/5): Great amenities, but there are better options at that price point with fully working facilities. - Overall, we had an amazing stay at the resort very good amenities unfortunately our room that we booked at over $700 a night did not have a fully working toilet or hot tub so this definitely was a let down during our stay unfortunately.
- Darin (1/5): We will never stay there again, way too expensive for what you get - The size of the room, also way too outdated
- Yolanda (7/5): -
- K8340LElucianol (10/5): Roman Spa Jacuzzi Room - Great experience, thinking about taking kids next winter season since the pool is warmed by hotspring. We stayed in the jacuzzi tub room and it was perfect for couples.
- 804janetj (2/5): Watch out for hidden fees and so called discretionary fee (not true) - I was told that the 20% gratuity + $10 resort fee was communicated earlier, but I was not allowed to adjust it. When I requested to pay a different amount, I was told that the front desk person had to call the Spa for approval. Then she came back and told me that she would have to get permission from the manager, but he wasn't there, and she thought it might be 10 minutes or so. She kept repeating that the amount was disclosed prior to my stay, which was true. If the amount is not adjustable or discretionary, it must be disclosed as part of the fee for that spa treatment, which was not the case. We were in a rush and had to get going, so I could not wait for the manager if and when he might come. Shame on you for trying every trick in the book, hoping that you would give up. Congratulations, I gave up just like your staff was hoping I would do.
- V4728YPpatrickm (10/5): Our go to place in Calistoga. - This is our go to place in Calistoga, the pools are always at a consistent temp year round, and the place is quiet and comfortable. We've stayed in the regular rooms all the way up to the jacuzzi king suite. They are all very comfortable. The kitchen suites are very nice to cook your own meals, even if the appliances are a bit dated, they do the job. We also love how restaurants, bars, and downtown is just a short walking distance, no need to drive. We will be returning soon. Great value for the money.
- 667cheryll (10/5): Great place to stay - Love our girls weekends in Calistoga! Roman Spa has been our choice of place to stay. It's a beautiful, clean and cozy place to be. We look forward to our annual visits. The staff is cheerful and always there to help us with anything that we should need.
- Badladyk (10/5): The Perfect Getaway - Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort is a magical getaway that restores, refreshes, and delights. Its three tranquil, gorgeous pools and impeccably-kept gardens offer the kind of beauty and quietude that are a rare treat among wine country resorts. Excellent spa, friendly and welcoming staff. Bonus: rooms with kitchenettes, a huge perk if you want to keep a low-key, cocooning vibe during your hot-springs retreat.
- N1365KKjamesk (8/5): Roman Spa Visit - Ive stayed here many times. Beautiful ground and pools. Rooms clean but dated. Location is perfect for foot travel to anywhere in town. Robe which was always in past included with room is now a rental item?! Unusual.
- E7253GOrobynm (8/5): Great for girls trip, walk to town. - Took my 3 daughters for 'girls trip.'
Grounds are beautifully maintained, pools are divine.
Rooms are very tired - do not expect much.
Very disappointed in the spa services but spa manager is rectifying for credit to try another time (consider getting your massages elsewhere)
- Owen (8/5): - Gardens maintained very well and pool area was immaculate. yes room was just a bit dated
- J7935YEbenk (10/5): Good time with Friends - The Roman Spa is always such a fantastic vacation if you are not relaxed by the end of your visit you probably tried too hard to not relax. We enjoy every day of our visits and cannot wait until the next visit!
- Abramson (9/5): - The location is off the main drag so it is nice and quiet. Many people are return visitors and we enjoyed engaging in conversation with others. The waters are delightful and the staff is friendly.
- Boris (6/5): - Very outdated property
- tsouthern (10/5): relax and reset - A relaxing and rejuvenating experience highlighted by the fantastic pools and the well maintained and beautiful grounds.
- O1460FOgalinak (10/5): Everyone must to go!!!! - Roman spa is my favorite destination for many years.
Owners always present on ground and very easy contact with.
Front deck representative Kimberly is absolutely amazing professional, always with smile , she with smile and happiness ready to serve you and satisfies any your request.
Maintenance c and gardeners staff are incredible: Erick, Patrick, Stew, Sheine. Look at the flowers, trees, equipment's and you will be very impressive
- michaelmY1468JR (4/5): Disappointed - There was a fire and we had to leave due to poor air quality. We had stayed for one night, but couldn't the second. I asked for a credit to stay a night in the future, and was told NO.
- 285michelleo (10/5): Great escape - Boutiquie quiet hotel with beautiful flowers and great charm. Perfect for a couples retreat or a quiet girls getaway. Perfect central location.
- Rachael (10/5): -
- l0rajune (10/5): Roman spa and hotel hot springs - Excellent hotel with excellent location located at the heart of Calistoga, extremely clean & comfortable ! We were allowed to check in early, so this was a big plus. The staff were attentive and went out of their way to ensure that we were comfortable.
Thank you very much Kimberly and Hailey!!
The rooms were spacious and spotless. We had a wonderful experience as usual!!
Would definitely send a friend there.
- Dallaswinegirl (8/5): Last minute trip to Napa to see Andrea Bocelli . - We made a last-minute decision to hop on a plane and see Andrea Bocelli @ Krug Winery Sunday night. WORTH IT! You can imagine the hotels were full and we did not want to pay $1,200/night. Someone suggested we try Calistoga, and we were so glad we did. This little hotel is charming and provided everything we needed. The King room was small but comfortable. The bedding was beautiful. the bathroom large and very clean. Daily room service was provided and did a great job. We loved the location of this hotel as it was walkable to the quaint town of Calistoga. Cute little shops, bakeries etc. The Roman Spa is known for their mineral spring fed pool & hot tub. They also have a dry sauna. We did not have time to enjoy this amenity, but it looked like a lot of guests were enjoying it. They have hours which close at 10:00 which keeps the noise manageable. We truly enjoyed our time at the Roman Spa and would go back again.
- claudial589 (8/5): A great place to celebrate our anniversary! - We celebrated our 20th anniversary at the Roman Spa. We'd been to the hotel quite a few times over the years and it is a great little getaway. We were delighted to be greeted by a bottle of champagne and a "happy anniversary" message - it was very thoughtful.
The staff is really great! Every single person made us feel welcome and they were very helpful. The pools feel wonderful and I had a little bout of eczema on my foot that disappeared after a couple days in that mineral water - amazing!
I love that you can walk everywhere - being a block off the main road is convenient. We didn't do any spa treatments this time, but hopefully we will next time.
The one thing I would say is that the rooms could use some updating, but overall, it was quite comfortable.
- 501lizw (10/5): Girls Trip - New beds very comfortable with lights & electrical sockets. Great pools. Walking distance to shops & CalMart. We reserve rooms with kitchens. We also used the grills cook dinner. Grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We stay here annually for last 15 years.
- Sally (10/5): Great, clean, comfortable stay - What a great place to stay. Sadly we were in town for a funeral and just needed a quiet, relaxed, comfortable place for a few nights. While the buildings and rooms are a bit dated, Roman Spa staff were friendly and helpful, could walk to everything in town from the hotel, had amazing foot massages at the spa, pools were clean and heated, room was clean as can be with a kitchen that had everything needed to cook or to store leftovers from restaurants. The grounds were lovely and well maintained. We would absolutely stay here again.
- Orval (10/5): - Enjoyed the thermal water. Only comment is the minerals on the edges of the pools. The water was clear but it would look better with the deposits removed from the pools.
- nativenvdn (10/5): Best place in Calistoga - I stay at the Roman every time I go to Calistoga. It's in walking distance of great restaurants, the pools and room are always perfect. And the spa is always a good experience. Since it was their 50th anniversary, we got a special gift and that was nice. I highly recommend all of it.
- lcmonster (10/5): Great for my group of 9 women - Rooms were very clean. Beds were comfortable. The pools were great The location is slightly off the main drag and I liked it that way. There are plenty of places to eat within a very short walk. We also enjoyed using their spa services. I plan to go back in the future.
- E8783ZEjd (2/5): A disappointing experience - The website photos are quite deceiving and the rooms need major updates
Staff at the front desk were not consumer friendly. We would not recommend or visit again. Misinformation and kept changing the check in time. Would not check us in even 15 min early. Did not make us feel welcome
- Susan (10/5): - I loved the daffodils and the tulips. They were so gorgeous.
- sheila33p (10/5): The Perfect Place - Our favorite place for a quick getaway in Napa Valley. It's so relaxing whether you're in the pools, walking around the beautiful, maintained grounds, or in your quiet room. We try to get there at least two to three times a year. Its a little piece of heaven not too far away from home.
- 16suzanney (10/5): Wonderful Mid-week Stay! - We have been to the Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort several times & this was the perfect mid-week getaway! Grounds are very well cared for & the blooming daffodils were an added bonus! Room was clean, quiet and the updated furnishings are a great touch to a quaint property with a nostalgic feel. Of course our main draw to Roman Spa are the pools and once again, they did not disappoint! We will definitely be back and our timing was perfect as the resort was quiet and very peaceful. Love being within walking distance to Calistoga’s Main Street with a variety of dining and shopping options. Looking forward to our next visit!
- Y4115UKmikes (10/5): Love the Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort - We love the Roman Spa! It's an oasis just steps away from the center of Calistoga. The large heated outdoor pool is the BEST- especially when the weather is cold. The pools are so inviting and the property grounds are lovely with fountains and well maintained gardens. There's lots of outdoor space to enjoy, both surrounding the pools and throughout the property. We like to walk to the local market to pick up wine and cheese to enjoy outdoors.
- Sherrill (10/5): - The mineral pools are very clean, crystal clear. So soothing. Nice beds. Rooms very clean. All staff very nice, helpful
- andyjscully (8/5): Love the pool - We have been coming here for 18 years. We love it. The only thing that would be better is if they updated their beds. We will continue to come and we will continue to bring our own bed topper. The pool is so wonderful and the staff are helpful. ……..
- FarAway61398069599 (4/5): So disappointed! 😢 - Overpriced. We expected a nice property and this was a way over priced and significantly outdated property. The mineral looks and hot tub tiles were filthy and ruined our experience. The rooms were throwback from late 1980s and need updating.
- Larry (6/5): The Spas are nice. - I was in a walker and they did not have an ADA room available for me. They did move me to the first floor. The room was crowded so it made it hard to move around. The spas are very nice. It was not crowded in December.
- JacknBerta (10/5): Relax and Relax more... - My husband's and mine's go to resort for a romantic stay. We come every year for our anniversary. It is a peaceful resort. The hot springs pool/hot tub are so relaxing. The Roman Spa Resort also offers spa packages. Lots of wineries in the area to set the mood!
- Ophelia (1/5): Bad -
- Manoj (7/5): Good -
- 129cameronj (10/5): Very Enjoyable - Comfortable, quiet rooms. Friendly, helpful and efficient staff. We loved the pools - one outdoor with a great hot tub and one indoor pool. Saunas too. A bit dated but charming, nonetheless. Priced well. We got a kitchenette and loved our experience.
- Justin (10/5): Exceptional -
- davidhR9757UF (10/5): Roman Spa is a great place to stay because you can walk downtown and find great places eat! - The place has a nice layout the garden is lovely, the gardener is great too.
We will tell our friends about this place too. We love how close we are to downtown, all the people are great it is a great place to stay!!! Stupid REVIEW won't let me wright a short review!! U need to change that!!
- Michelle (8/5): - The property looked lovely. The staff was very polite. My shower plumbing was horrific there was a piercing whinning sound the entire time i had the shower on every time. My room was 167.
- 884richd (10/5): Great overall experience - Very clean, pool was sparkling, use the spa and we were very happy with our CBD massages. Cleaning service can be scheduled to your needs, try Robert's and the Depot which you can walk to. Close to everything and a reasonable rate compared to similar in the area, you will enjoy it!
- mdholley (2/5): zero hospitality stars - It's with a heavy heart that I write this review...
My husband and I have gone to Roman Hot Springs for about 20 years now. We have taken our children and friends. Even though..
the place is outdated
the management is rude
no robes
Can't check in early, ever, even if it's an hour. They will charge you 30 dollars for early check in.
yapping neighbor dogs
overpriced.
So, when I got an e-mail (2 days before leaving for Roman hot springs for my birthday) saying that they had "upgraded my reservation" i was a bit leery. They NEVER give anything for free. So I called to inquire and basically was treated so condescendingly for even questioning the upgrade. It's an upgrade, it's free she said. It's a king with a daybed. I started asking questions, again rudeness. Well I thought, we'll see.
So we get there, excited to see the upgraded room and it was not an upgrade. Yes, they have a daybed which is like a futon with a gross tweedy cover on it but there is no closet and it's not cozy like the basic king room sooooo....
I go back to the office and tell them I don't like the room and I want the room that I reserved and am told that they are doing renovations and that they don't have any classico kings left. I said well can you upgrade me then to a superior? No, you'll have to pay more. Mind you, they gave away my room and haven't apologized ONCE for the incovenience, tried to give me the ol' switcheroo to a not so nice room (telling me it's and upgrade :/) and now are stonewalling me!! Finally, they gave me a room with a kitchenette. Fine, all good.
But not good, later my husband and I experienced dirty looks from management like we were the bad guys!! It was so uncomfortable, I left very disappointed from my experience there.
So, I don't think I'll be goin' back for a while. Nor, recommend Roman Hot Springs to my friends. And please don't say "Sorry we didn't meet up to your expectations", because you did.
I was leery about the upgrade because of your management's serious lack of hospitality and I was right.
- 153lynnettes (10/5): Charming and location location - Very lovely place to stay dated but charming close to store’s restaurants and art shops the wineries area are world class also hidden gems everywhere in the region make sure to make reservations at the finest winery in the world with views that are amazing
- LARAB0202 (4/5): SPA services - This review is for the spa service ONLY.
We have been coming to Roman Spa for 15 or more years, even bringing family members with us on some visits. Roman Spa is still our favorite place to stay when we visit Napa Valley.
Most of the time, we utilize the spa services, but this visit was very disappointing. The receptionist was quite unfriendly and failed to provide any information regarding changes in payment policies. After booking our appointment, she mentioned we would receive an email confirmation. I did receive the email, but to be honest, I didn't read it thoroughly because I assumed it was just a confirmation.
After our treatment, we tipped the therapist in cash. When we asked the same receptionist about the total cost after using our $75 certificate, the amount seemed off, so I requested clarification. She informed us that all spa treatments automatically include a 20% gratuity. We were in shock. Why should we have to pay a tip in advance before receiving the services? What if we weren't satisfied or only partially satisfied? I strongly believe customers should have the right to decide how much to tip.
This policy feels sneaky and dishonest. The receptionist should have informed us of this at the time of booking, rather than after we completed our treatment. It made us feel very uncomfortable. I'm not even sure if it's legal to charge a tip in this manner.
We will not be using the spa services during our future stays.
- Babbs777 (10/5): Great relaxing trip - Been going to Roman Spa for over 30 years. Never disappointed. Very relaxing and quiet and seldom see any children. We always get the room with the full kitchen for coffee and breakfast in our robes in the beautiful courtyard. Massage services are also recommended.
- Moytravel (10/5): Great stay at Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga. - Enjoyed our stay at the Roman Spa. Fourth year in a row for my wife and myself. Great place to relax in the heated pools as well as the well manicured grounds. Great spaces to hang out within the resort with tables, water features, bbq grills, nooks. Feels like you are in a garden. Very friendly staff as always and looking forward to our return next year.
- Patti (10/5): Exceptional -
- Arslanbek (7/5): Good -
- Iryna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (7/5): Great pool facilities, but rooms need updating - Pool facilities are great and well maintained. The grounds are beautiful The rooms are very dated. Carpets need to be replaced or changed to hardwood. For the cost, this was disappointing
- Paula (10/5): - A very relaxing and enjoyable experience.
- Cathy (6/5): - Still love the pools but the constant construction noise that started at 7:30am and went until 6 pm was horrible! The staff weren’t helpful. There were more little signs saying why stuff was incomplete or unfinished. Then on top of that little notes about where this or that goes…. We’ve been going there 50 years! No recognition of that even when you mention it. We’ll never go again! Overprices of course! So so sad…..
- Kris (10/5): Total gem of a resort with luscious hot springs and gorgeous gardens. - Beautiful property—lush gardens, impeccably tended grounds, pristine pools. I especially appreciate the tranquility: no music by the pools means maximum relaxation.
- Sandra (6/5): - Nice staff. Expensive for the condition- 70’s decor. Excellent location.
- Mary Beth (10/5): - The grounds are a beautifully well thought out selection of lovely plantings that are very well cared for. They enhance the stay at this quiet spot.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms very comfortable.
- Deborah (9/5): paradise for people of - close to everything by walking. Very quiet and relaxing! I would go there every month, if I could! bed was a little lumpy, although I know they are planning to update.
- Alfredo (2/5): - We arrived at the property ~1:10PM. We acknowledged that check-in time is 3PM, and asked the front desk if our room might be available even though we were a couple of hours early. The front desk clerk told us that the room was clean and available, but that we would have to pay a $30 fee to move in earlier than check-in. The clerk was polite, knowledgeable, and efficient -- he was simply conveying to us what the house rules are. We felt gouged by the request to pay $30 dollars for simply moving in early -- something that does not cost the property anything. Totally ungracious on the part of the Roman Spa, shamefully nickel and diming customers .
- Elaine (4/5): - It very accommodating, there was no spa service on Sunday or Monday.
- Adarsh (2/5): - Not clean. No daily house keeping. Not worth the cost.
- Lance (10/5): Wonderful winter get away! - Stayed in the King suite and enjoyed every minute of it, the room was spacious, loved to soak in the personal mineral jacuzzi in the bathroom and sit by the fireplace. Bed was super comfortable and loved the 3 geothermal pools like always! Everything was perfect.
- Bruno (2/5): - Go somewhere else, total rip off.
- Janice (6/5): Pleasant -
- james (4/5): Happy Birthday Trip ! - Jack hammer and construction during our stay by the mineral pools. The hot water system was broken and the pool’s were cold . Going to a Hot Springs Spa with cold pools makes me wonder why they didn’t offer a free return visit in the future? They offered late check out to use their cold pools? They offered a 30% off coupon but couldn’t even deliver that as we checked out.
- Pamela (10/5): tranquilty - this was centrally located so we could walk everwhere we wanted to go or just relax in the wonderful pools. very tranquil
- Roberta (8/5): - I did not like the fact there was no cleaning of the rooms, unless we asked. An early check in cost. The pool was to hot. Otherwise, the staff and the the resort itself was excellent.
- Jayna (8/5): Very good -
- Mike (10/5): A treasure in the Napa Valley. - Friendly staff in a great location.
- Andrew (6/5): - Basically, a 1970s style motel with an in-wall AC unit. not worth the $300 per night price.
- Mehrdad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simone (7/5): Calm and relaxing stay in Calistoga. - Accommodations were comfortable and the outdoors was well kept. Enjoyed the pool time! The pictures on booking.com did not match our room. Room was not updated like the photos or the description.
- Phariss (7/5): It could have been better to be honest. Pricey for the amenities. I probably wouldn't pay $400 again - We had no idea about any breakfast. We did enjoy meeting all of the people at the pool. I tried to get a mud bath but was told there was nothing available. The place seemed empty when I was there. The door was locked but someone came and unlocked it. If it was my business, I would accommodate a guest any way I could. We weren't even offered any other available times. I thought that was weird, especially since I paid almost $400 for 1 night and was willing to pay more for additional services. Very unfortunate.
- Colleen (8/5): Great little stay to celebrate my sister’s birthday. -
- Mike (10/5): - All in all we enjoyed to room and the resort
AC was week
Auto shutoff kept the room from cooling off
Pillows are hard. Would suggest more in the closet
- Bruce (8/5): - The location was good, walking distance from the main street.
Lots of flowers and good thermal swimming pool.
The only bad thing is that the buildings have a very poor insulations and you can hear the people talk on the floor below.
- Erin (10/5): a nice get away location; However, expensive like a posh resort, but more like an economy hotel - the property was fabulous. lots of flowers. the pools and sauna were also great
- Farooq (6/5): - Would’ve been good for half the price. Room and spa very basic. Massage was fantastic!
- Johanna (8/5): Wonderful pools, staff and gardens.. not so great room! - We loved all pools.. perfect temps.. lively lounge chairs.. gardens were wonderful.. Spring Tulips galore! Staff, great. Room seemed dated. Nice kitchen, comfortable beds.. but shower did not work.. I think we should have been offered another room.. but did get $20 for Sarafornia!
- Ellen (10/5): - A friendly, comfortable place whose pools are kept to a very high and satisfying standards. Staff seemed happy to work there.
- Gladys (10/5): - great location
- Patricia (8/5): I’m coming back as soon as I can. - Beautiful landscaping. Perfect location. Mud bath and and massage available on property. Everything is in walking distance. The big pool is heavenly. N/A
- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Kazoua (10/5): Exceptional - Hot springs N/A
- Jan (9/5): Superb -
- Monica (9/5): Superb -
- Lance (9/5): it was a very comfortable vintage resort, will go back again! - great location, very relaxing. spent a lot of time in the geo thermal pools. I would really say I disliked anything! the place was very vintage, not updated to royal resort quality, but I came to like that aspect of it.
- Denis (7/5): Good - Pools were great, location to town center , Kimberly was very helpful and informative. No continental breakfast, and no microwave in room
- Cynthia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (8/5): Very good - great location and staff
