Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I initially experienced a problem with the heating in my room but it was resolved to my satisfaction. I found the staff to be courteous and friendly. Will stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Liked the proximity to everything.
Staff was very knowledgable and helpful.
- David (10/5): - Great space, great staff, wonderful experience, thanks for asking
- May-Britt V. R. (8/5): Location - Great and silent room, always tidy, close to the CTrain and Downtown.
- Lyle (10/5): - Wonderful service. Very clean. Lots of eating facilities on campus.
- Kip H. (6/5): clean, private - affordable, but they do charge $10.00/day for parking
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean and no frills - Clean facilities was the high point. We stayed in the three bedroom dorm which worked well for us and two teenagers. Good wifi. Bare bones room. No tv. Not much on campus to do but coffee shop and pizza place in same building helped. Decent value.
- Raliat A. (10/5): Very clean and cozy - We rented this place for the weekend and the first thing that caught my attention was how affordable it was, especially for 2 bedrooms. I almost thought it was too good to be true but I'm glad I did and we really enjoyed our stay! It didn't take too long to get the train from our hotel and that really allowed us to get around easier! Will definitely rent again :)
- Heath (8/5): - Awesome stay for a family! I cannot complain about the accommodations at all. They are dorm rooms, and it is not luxury but it is much more spacious than a typical hotel. You are given shampoo, conditioner, soap and a towel. You also get a kitchen space, but there is no burner, just a microwave.
The location has tons of green space, a subway, Starbucks and dominos downstairs, and easy access to basically everything.
The only downside is that the expedia site description listed it as having a pool, but the pool was only for adult laps, and you had to pay extra to get in. So do not plan on swimming.
- Ben (10/5): Great place to stay - Great place to stay if your just looking for a room with no frills if you want a luxury stay in hotel alma rather than the halls ...great quiet clean and tidy
- Vernon (6/5): - The bed was hard and small. The room was Spartan as expected for a campus dorm. Considering the high demand for accommodation at the the time we stayed there, it was OK. The location is convenient. There was a charge for parking $10/day that I did not expect and the parkade was a long block from the hotel.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The check inn staff was awesome, the check out person was not. The shower in room backs up, no help from maintenance staff. Overall cleanliness is good, it’s hard to bring up luggage to room. Parking is extra and not close to the rooms. No tv in the rooms and common areas with tv are closed, along with fitness center and game room. For the money it costs I will pay up a little more and get a better experience.
- K (8/5): Convincient to cooking - lWe felt to live like home We like the environment in the campus. we did our light cooking very easily. Also we liked the weather here.
- Dana (2/5): Bad service & does not have promised amenities - The expedia ad promised a tv in the room and coffee/tea maker. There was none and none of the tv lounges were open. There were 4 bath towels, but no hand towels or face cloths. The expedia ad said there was a pool for amenities, when we asked at the front desk about it, we were immediately told it was closed for the night. We asked what time the pool opened in the am, clerk reluctantly looked into it, found it was still open and told us the time for am. It was easier for him to tell us it is closed, rather than look it up and give us a correct answer. The pool he referred us to was the public/city pool down the road, nothing that was on site or part of the university. During check-in, there was no mention of included breakfast. We got to our room and realized that was missed. We tried to phone the front desk from our room, no answer on 3 different tries. Hubby needed to park the car so he drove back to Hotel Alma to ask. Clerk was there (why he was not answering the phone or asking us to hold, I don't know. ) When we asked about it, then he gave us the coupons and explained how it works. I would think explaining breakfast should be part of the check-in procedure. I would think answering the phone, or placing us on hold if he was busy would be normal procedure. The room was sparse, which is what I expected but if the ad says there is tv, coffee make and a pool then I do expect those things to be there. There was a major lack of professionalism and attention to customer care.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I had a great experience. The room was confortable and clean, the facilities were great. Nothing to complain
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent! Clean and confirmable with a separate kitchen area.
- Jennifer (8/5): - Great budget option. Not very close to campus centre.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Need to pay for parking for 10 bucks a night if u have a car. Includes gym, pool facilities.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Campus atmosphere in summer great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The facility was very clean and modern. Staff very helpful. A boxed breakfast was $12, but a coffee pot, microwave and refrig were provided in room area. The parking was an extra fee and located several blocks away from hotel entrance. Fees for parking was not included in Expedia info. The location address provided was not location of hotel. No address for hotel was provided. Fortunately, another couple who had just gone thru process provided us directions from address given to actual checkin location several blocks away.
- Meeting (4/5): - Close to where meeting places. Bed was terrible, no comfort at all, minimal bkankets ( thin sheet and 1 thin bkanket), shared bathroom, no tv.
- ChungNang (10/5): Comments during my stay - Price and rooms are very good. Reception is very helpful. Only the shower linkage took 30 mins let all water gone. Need to repair it.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Overchared Credit Card
Keys Not Working
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was close to where I needed to go. The bathroom (shelves and shower) was a little dirty - this was the only downfall.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was ok for what we needed bug no coffee of tea makung facilities
- Pat (8/5): - Basic, clean and centrally located... just what I needed
- john (8/5): - Private dorm room with shared kitchen and bath with one other room. Front desk was friendly it cost $10 extra to park a car over night it a bit of hike from the college parking structure to the hotel.
- Iman (10/5): Very clean, friendly staff, amazing price! - Everything was really good and comfortable. Considering the price that I paid, the experience was much beyond my expectation. The location is a bit far from Downtown (20 mins by train). That was the only downside.
- Will (8/5): Good cheap stay! Would come again - Great place to stay near the airport, beds a little uncomfortable but it’s clean and seems to be run by students
Nevertheless great service
Parking costs extra & height limit of 6ft4inch
- Verified traveler (10/5): in the heart of the university - Accommodation was clean, simple, easy to access. Staff is helpful.
- Morgan (8/5): Happy - We were quite pleased with our stay overall. Our only issues were that the bed was very hard for us but everyone likes different mattresses. The other thing is the bathroom sink was so clogged with hair that it didn't drain properly. Lastly, to have breakfast provided, it was $50 per night while our hotel room was only $54 a night, double the price just to have breakfast. Even with these minor issues, we would definitely stay here again.
- Tanya (8/5): So close and convenient - It was great! Just wish I would have chose the rate that came with breakfast
- Andrea (10/5): U of Calgary - Good to check out the university for future prospects.
- Mirka (10/5): Nice hotel - The bedroom was very comfortable and had lots of space. Includes own desk and plenty of furniture. Staff is very helpful and friendly.
There are meeting rooms, nice reception, and a store downstairs. It has everything necessary to be satisfied and comfortable during your trip.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very close to campus! - This hotel is great! Nothing too fancy but awesome if your looking for an inexpensive stay on campus. Close to the fitness facilities, and conveniently close to the dining hall. The convenience store downstairs has everything you need. Front desk staff were SO friendly! I was impressed with housekeeping, they always made my room look great!
- L (8/5): Great location - Hotel was within walking distance of everything. Room was clean, and staff were great. Only complaint is the bed. It reminds me of a crib mattress, plastic and thin.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Convenient to uni and for a weekend stay - Nice big clean room. Not much kitchen facilities (no cultery, tin opener or bottle opener) but the coffee was good. Bed a bit uncomfortable and exactly like the residence beds we were in all semester, could have done with a mattress topper or something. Hotel staff all super friendly and helpful, good WiFi, the lounge/dining area was good except the waiter was a tad flustered and came across quite rude. Shop in hotel was convenient. Location is good.
- Kimberly (6/5): - New mattresses are definitely needed!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good hotel ..and perfect price .. but bus station is away like 8 minutes walking ..parking is 10$ per night
- Schalkpfredericks (10/5): Easy commute - Good quality price-wise and within easy commuting distance for a conference in central Calgary
- Schalkpfredericks (10/5): Comfortable and secure - Hotel Alma was very comfortable and assistance was given by a friendly staff. Travel by taxi was arranged quickly and both the train and buses were within walking distance.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Is a great options at a reasonable cost, especially if you are needing to be on campus or nearby. However, there is some inconsistency in terms of front desk staff and what they will tell you. Sometimes they’ll explain exactly how keys work and the room layout, other times nothing. Additionally, I spoke to others who have stayed and they said they received breakfast vouchers. This was quite disappointing, as the multiple times I have stayed here I have never been given one. Including one time that my room was not ready on time and I had to wait upwards of 30 minutes for it to be prepared.
- Ifeanyi (8/5): Nice hotel in the heart of the University of Calga - Spent a week there. It was a bit difficult to locate buy once I found it, the rest of the experience was quite nice
- Matt (10/5): Clean and Affordable - I've stayed here three times and each time I've been perfectly satisfied with the room and service. The beds could certainly be more comfortable but for the price there is no reason to complain.
I'll definitely be staying again.
- Eric (6/5): University residence room - Affordable, adequate accommodation if you need to be on or near U of C for short term stay. Think small dorm room and that's all you're getting.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great value and good location. Rooms were very clean.Easy access to rapid transit to downtown
- Verified traveler (10/5): Student Move In - It's a fantastic location that made my son's move in ; into University residence so simple. The Bistro ; Laundromat and Kitchenette were facilities that made my 6 day stay as comfortable as it can get .
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent hotel - I reserved single bedroom flat but I got double bedroom flat as no single one was available. there are a microwave oven, a refrigerator, flat screen with cable channels. the bathroom is also clean. The main disadv. is that you will need to walk a long distance to the supermarkets.
- EMADALDEEN (8/5): Good Hotel - Overall it's very good hotel. It's clean, comfort, and its location is amazing; but, there are gym and swimming pool!
For me that was not big broplem, but for some people it's..
- Verified traveler (10/5): best for family... - Stayed in a 2-bedroom flat with family. very spacious and comfortable. There is a common kitchen and lounge on each floor which adds value. Washroom is a bit small. Parking is in the parkade (2-min). In beautiful UofC campus. Highly recommend this place.
- ZAMIR (2/5): A great place to be on campus - The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. In particular Joseph is a great asset to the front desk and he is genuinely interested in helping guests. I have dealt with him often and he is always pleasant.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Typical dorm room - A great price. Wanted to save $ since our next night was Banff prices. There are 3 rooms sharing a bathroom but there were no people in the other rooms and I don't know if they avoid booking it for sharing.. Safe and clean and quiet. $10 to park. Perfect for a travel budget. Full bed, mattress was a little hard. I would stay again to save $. A bargain and an adventure!
- ChiChi (10/5): Great! - I was upgraded to the hotel suite which was really amazing. The room was really comfortable and neat. Will definitely book again
- Joey (8/5): Nice, clean and very inexpensive place to stay. - My wife and I visited Banff and Lake Louise for 5 days in early August and we decided to stay in Calgary. We spent 10-12 hours sight-seeing everyday so we just needed a nice, clean, inexpensive place to sleep. We stayed at the University of Calgary Yamnuska Hall with an average total price of $70 per night. One night in a Banff 2-Star hotel cost $260 per night before taxes.
Our 4-night stay at the University of Calgary was the same price as a one-night stay in Banff.
The daily one hour drive to and from Banff was very scenic and relaxing.
We would definitely stay there again.
- Vince (2/5): Unacceptably stark and inconvenient - Beware extra money for parking. Checkin in a seperate building, drive to parking, then walk to another building. Spartan and no facilties nearby. Much better quality for the price at hotel village!
- Daniel (8/5): Nice place for short term - It is clean with kitchen. That's all we wanted. Bang for the boxes.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice clean room. Great price. Worked awesome for my 3 teenagers and I. We would definitely stay again. The staff were friendly. My only tip is bring your own dishes... full kitchen but no dishes, cutlery, etc.
- Dory (8/5): Close to many amenities - It was a good time and the hotel has great facilities
- J (6/5): Nice price - Nice location nice price, convenient, easy to find a place to stay overnight for this price
- Jo-Ann (8/5): Yamnuska summer residence in Calgary - We wanted a room where we could cook so that it would reduce the cost of the stay. I am happy to say that is exactly what we got. The bedrooms were separate, so we could each do our own thing. This was nice because my mother was staying with us. We did not bring a coffee maker with us and that was the only thing we were missing. There was an event going on at the University at the time we were there. So we were unable to use any of the facilities due to time constraints. It would have been nicer to be able to stop in front of the doors when we were unloading and loading. WiFi was great, but we had to register every 3 days. A little off-putting, but doable. The cleaners came every day to empty the garbage and refresh the towels. It was a drive to almost anywhere. And while there were restaurants close by, many kept University hours and were closed by the time we came back to our rooms. But otherwise, we were quite pleased overall with our stay.
- Ana (6/5): mad at Expedia - Expedia should do a better job at describing the hotel. There was no TV, no phone, no hair dryer, no hitting, no iron. It is a very rubbish student dorm with centralized air-conditioning and you cannot adjust the temperature. The hotel staff is extremely nice and helpful. We were horrified when we stepped into your room. The guy (Serg) at the front desk ( which is 10 min away from the residence) was very nice and helpful, but the only option was an upgrade to the room at the hotel Alma, we did that and we are happy about our choice. Expedia MUST provide a description that the hotel is lucking an essential things like room phone, TV, hairdryer and others. It is not appropriate for Expedia to sell this kind of hotel without fully disclosing all the details. We would not trust an Expedia rating and description in the future.
- Usha (10/5): - It's worth it way more than its price!
- Joanne (8/5): Good value - Room was clean and spacious.
Access to laundry etc. Staff were friendly.
Great room for the price.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent accommodation for the price. I would suggest this place to anyone visiting Calgary
- Harvey (6/5): Not bad for money - Didnt get maid service daily. Microwave and fridge no stove. Little noisey until 10 . for what you pay not bad
- Imran (8/5): Worrh the money - All good
- Joanne (10/5): Great. Would stay again - Check in was easy and fast. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was clean and comfortable. Great overall.
- Yvonne (6/5): - Liked the comfort and space of the two bedroom suite compared to the upgraded European room
- fatima (8/5): Good overnight stay - It was clean and comfortable. There's a fan that runs all night.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - If you have never stayed in residence before..be prepared to have nothing in your room..No tv, hairdryer, coffee maker, etc.
But ok for the price .
- Karen W. (8/5): Nice property - The rooms are comfortable. Kitchens are not stocked, so make sure you bring everything you need. They provide paper cups and plastic drinking cups along with supplies to make coffee.
Easy check in-check out.
- Gary (4/5): Confusing and not so comfy. - It is a dorm with a hard and rigid high bed. Not for tourist only good for students. The reception is different from the location provided. Slow internet. Would spend a lot of time looking around and asking for directions to find the reception. No control for the aircon too cold and it is a general outlet exhaust from the main.
- Shane (8/5): Great stay for the price - Very clean and for the price, the comfort was fine. The AC could have been set cooler. I couldn't access the controls. Very spacious suite.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Beds are uncomfortable. Recommend bringing a blanket.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - there is nothing in the room. No tx, no light stand. just a bed and desk. There is no kitchenware or stove in the kitchen.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Had to switch from Yamnuska Hall to Hotel Alma after they wouldn't accept the form of payment I used to pay for the room for a deposit. Overall though, despite the minor setback, the room was good, the bed was comfortable and it was perfect for what we needed, a room for one night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Need larger bath towels. Need to provide hand and wash clothes. No hand soap.
- Bren (6/5): It's a dormitory - Not bad, and for what it is, great. I had a three bedroom apartment where I was the only person. Each bedroom had its own key. There was a "shared" kitchen (no stove, but microwave and fridge), bathroom (very large, simple - possibly sized for accessibility). Check-in was at a separate building, a3 minute walk away.
- judi (4/5): room cleaning - The room was cleaned only on the first day, even though clean towels had been put in the room each day. This was confusing, did room cleaning come with the cost of the room or not? The air flow was not working in the second room I had, making it very warm for sleeping. Also the bathroom wasn't cleaned, used towels left on the floor.
- Grant (8/5): - Nice peaceful place to stay, very good choice during Stampede. You have to realize what it is - a dorm converted to a summer hotel, so no TV's for example and the beds aren't the greatest. However, very nice peaceful area and you have access to U of A facilities.
- VV (4/5): No air, no one cared - The unit is really far from the train station. Also, there was o air conditioning. The hotel staff would do nothing about the air not working. The room and bath were clean. No lamps in bedroom.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Convenient to all activities - Check in was a nightmare - front desk staff require better training.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very basic room but okay for a short stay. Not comfortable for more than 1 night, especially with children. Also very hot and difficult to sleep at night - not sure if there was AC or not but it was not working.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Worst experience ever, check your stall doors. - The room was clean and it had all we were promised. Although it had these qualities, the must shameful experience I have ever had took place there. I will describe it hoping this does not happen to any other person.
On Sunday July 9th at around 10 am I was using the washroom located at the hallway of the first floor in the north side of the building. I locked the door before proceeding to the toilet. I was doing my business when a young lady suddenly opened the door (obviously the lock was not functioning properly) it was a shock for a lot of people that were passing by, for the janitor who was working in that area and, of course, for me sitting on the toilet. The door got stuck and the girl could not close the door when I asked her, so I had to stand up and close it myself. Everyone standing in the hallway saw me in disbelief. I was exposed to everyone!
It has been the most embarrassing moment in my life. I can't believe that the management of this facility doesn't take care of the privacy of guests by checking and maintaining good functioning services. I'm reassuring this because the same situation happened to my son the day before my incident in the same washroom. I am hoping for a follow up in this matter. I'm sharing my bad experience with you, so this does not happen to anyone again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice clean apartment with a fridge, microwave and a coffee maker. We stayed a few times as it's a great stop before going to Banff. would definitely come again.
- Olgerd (8/5): Cheap and clean! - Nice place for very affordable price. Rooms are clean and quiet. Not busy in summer time. Good if you planning to visit Banff. Perfect for student budget 👍
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great family traveling option. 4 bdrms for cheap - The building is a dorm when the university is in session and rents out dorm rooms in off seasons. It was a good experience staying in a spacious dorm. Where else can you get 4 bedrooms with a wardrobe, desk and a full size bed for the price of a single room hotel? Our suite had 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchenette with two full size refrigerators, a microwave and a kitchen sink. However, there's no stove for cooking. The building has a front desk and there's ample free parking. It's located on top of a hill over looking the entire valley area below. The view was great. The location didn't work well with google maps because google maps didn't have the campus roads. You need to remember what the tall building looks like and navigate there not relying on google maps (it's not hard to find the 15-20 story building). I would recommend this to other families.
- Lauren (2/5): DON'T STAY HERE! - The pictures are deceiving!!! I would NEVER choose to stay here again. Do not be fooled by the images of a kitchen! oh there's a fridge to store all your yummy food items and microwave for show only but unless you take all of your crockery and utensils with you on your weekend trip, you can't use any of it! Even the photo shopped coffee machine in the kitchens is not in the rooms. What kind of hotel doesn't supply guests with coffee in the morning?? a mug of coffee is even a standard for a prisoner in this day and age! On top of that, there is a communal kitchen BUT you have to have at least a 7 night stay to use that according to front desk! There is 3 different accommodation blocks which is not specified when booking so look very carefully at what you're paying for. If you want to use any laundry rooms and games rooms (as your room won't have a tv, but at the very least you get a window) then you have to walk all the way back to the main hotel to get an access key, on average a 10 minute walk one way. We checked out immediately for the hotel did not meet any of our needs, front desk manager is ignorant with zero empathy. Their reaction to our disappointment was very stern, they have 100% experienced this complaint before. Shocking service!
- Donald (8/5): Great Location - I had a bit of an issue with my reservation. Advertised as a 1 Bedroom Flat at Alma with a partially open bathroom and shower only...which translates to 1/2 of a handicapped mini apartment (who knew?!). Anyway, it was quickly taken care of and my room switched. I don't understand why the room info would not clearly state it was an accessible room I was booking (very misleading). Aside from this, my stay was great.
CONS: Mattress saggy, weeds in front beds (which are unsightly), extra $10/day for parking
PROS: VERY clean, great location for attending event at Oval/U of C (right across the street), safe, quiet area
- Verified traveler (6/5): Personally, I came back here to settle the differe - Unless you really want a child, please don't get pregnant. Every pregnancy is different, does not matter rich or poor. Slower learner child needs a lot TLC. Genius child needs a lot unthinkable creation to occupy time. Either one can drain the parents' energy like there is no tomorrow.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Was listed as having a kitchen. It only had a microwave and fridge.
- Mary Ann (10/5): Everything =Excellent (except accessible room) - Everything was excellent - the staff, decor, restaurant, campus - except the accessible suite, which was not all that accessible. The toilet particularly. It was comfort height -yay- but had only one grab bar, which is not safe or convenient. Very energy draining & stressful. Then the hanging rod in the armoire was way too high for a wheelchair user. The pulleys for the blinds could not have been placed worse for a disabled person. Also, the automatic door never worked- until the day we left when I noticed a tiny switch ABOVE the door. Really? 7ft up?
Lastly, hand towels, face cloths, & an extra towel for long-haired folk would be nice.
- Denny (4/5): So much less than I wanted and needed. - Stark, no comfortable space. No way to utilize kitchenette, It cost much more than a hotel room and I choose it because I wanted separate bedrooms. Fitness center locked and my key did not open. Not satisfied and would have gotten something else had I not used Expedia which does not allow change.
- Jomar (10/5): Best hotel for price value. - This hotel is very clean, secured and comfortable. The price is very inticing compared to other hotels with same price. I highly recommend this hotel! The only down part is you just need to walk atleast 10mins to the nearest train station, anyway great sceneries will amaze yoy along the way since this hotel is inside The university.
- Joey (2/5): U of C Summer Residence is good for nothing - Room key didn't work. After waiting for 12 hours, the maintenance guy showed up and broke the door open. There was no housekeeping. Only two clean towers were replaced daily. They never made our beds. Hotel office is located in another building. There was no immediate support. The staffs didn't want to walk over. Unless all hotels in Calgary are full, DO NOT stay there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean but missing some essentials. - The Alma Hotel at University of Calgary is very clean. The staff were very nice and helpful.
The room had a kitchenette but did not have any utensils, plates, glasses etc which certainly defeats the purpose completely. By adding the essentials and perhaps a toaster, the experience would have been remarkably better.
Although the room was small by North American standards the cleanliness made up for the size as many less expensive hotels tend to be rather dirty.
- Benjamin (6/5): Cheap and cheerful but parking fees apply! - The apartment was spotlessly clean but the kitchen has no crockery, pans or cutlery to make or eat any drinks and food with.
Lovely big fridge in the kitchen to keep your drinks cool.
The mattress was very thin and the bed slats were too far apart so the middle of the bed sagged.
The air con was non-existent but thankfully the window opened a bit and campus was quiet at night (no students) which helped cool the room down - not sure how noisy the campus might be during term time though!
Had to request extra shampoo as they only provided one for the two of us and the shower curtain was too short so flooded the bathroom but maintenance came round the next morning to sort it out which was great.
There is a University LRT (train) station about 15mins walk and there's a café and sandwich shop just 1min around the corner which is handy for getting breakfast & coffee since you can't make your own in the apartment without investing in mugs, plates and cutlery.
NB: Reception isn't manned during the holidays so you have to go to the Alma Hotel about 5mins walk across the campus to check in/out and report any issues.
NB: Parking was $10 per day so be aware of this.
- Ying Hung (10/5): Very nice stay - Clean quiet and spacious.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Friendly staff and clean rooms - Had a relaxing stay. Dorm rooms were simple but comfortable. Laundry facilities on each floor were convenient. Several options for meals around campus.
