Guest Reviews
- Deborah (2/5): Poorly managed and poorly maintained. - Worst motel stay ever. Cheaply built and furnished prefab building we were in was poorly managed, poorly maintained. First room we were given had not been cleaned - trash, dirty dishes, dirty bedding. Second room had no heat on a night when it snowed. Off-site owner was no help - a friend of the owner and her husband tried to help, fixed the heater temporarily, and brought a space heater on the second day. Owner did not respond to text. AND it was expensive.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Niko one around non arrival. Could sTV working within living quarters of the home, but no one answered the door bell. Finally, after having on the windows a very young child came to the door and told us to just go to the unlit and the key was inside. The rest was good.
- Becky (8/5): - We stayed 2 nights while visiting Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park.
- Ann (10/5): Loved it! - Very clean and quiet. Great value for the price
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice quiet location and the room was comfortable, however when we had a neighbor next door it was obvious the walls were very non sound proof. Easy to hear the people next door talking and what they were saying.
- Brenda (6/5): Nice, locally owned motel - The staff was very nice. The room was very clean. The outside of the hotel was rather run down.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Employee Parking??? - Oddly, seemed; both days... apparently EMPLOYEE vehicle parked in drive through, blocking what would normally be lane for guests to check in at office door. Even a seecond vehicle, it seemed, parked, fair blocking door, as well as any parking near office entrance. Any attempting park near office to check in, then tending block entire 'frontage'/passage from highway access point across to rooms. Seems such space ought NOT be, round the clock, day after day, blocked.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Overall nice place. Great location. Rooms clean and enough room for 2 people. Wish I could’ve opened the window but it was full of spider webs and the trailer park is like 5 feet behind the window.
- Sara (4/5): - Decent place but got a TEXT from the hotel after we left accusing us of taking a blanket and telling us we'd be charged $59 for it. We didn't take a blanket and thought the way they went about contacting us and addressing the issue was really unprofessional.
- Sara (10/5): - We loved the rustic cabin feel of our room. My daughters and I loved our 2 night stay in Custer at Mystic Valley Inn. It was our favorite place to stay during out 2 week road trip. The staff was so helpful as well. We will be back someday.
- michael (10/5): - my stay here was great, location to the custer park, very quiet, comfortable, clean, and I met Elvis!
- Arne (8/5): - It was relatively close to our objectives in the Black Hills. It met our needs. Staff very friendly.
- Gregory (10/5): Mystic Motel is Magical - We were visiting Custer State park. The Motel was very close to the park and the town of custer, but far enough away from town to be very quiet and private. The room was very spacious with seperate rooms. I really like that privacey. There was a microwave, refrigerator and flatscreen cable TV in the room. The beds were clean and comfortable. It is an older motel but maintained very well while preserving the older charm. The staff were so friendly I really felt like they were close friends. My dog was welcome with no additional charge. The grounds are huge, well over an acre, and very nicely landscaped. There is a gazebo with fire pit and very comfortable furniture. We saw some deer and a fox, I think, and other wildlife. Overall I really enjoyed my stay. I will be back often.
- Larry (8/5): - Loved the style and location. A bit rustic but very enjoyable! The mattress needed updating tho!
- John (8/5): Mystic Valley - Great location.... very convenient to get over to Mount Rushmore and not too far from Badlands NP.
Nothing special my stay was fine. Room was clean.... I had a nice shower... no food in the morning but I got to drink some coffee.
- Sam (10/5): - Great place to stay. Hope to be back soon. Had a bonfire both nights we stayed. Relaxed in the outdoor setting.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Had some concerns when there was a for sale in front of the property. Best part was breakfast at the Bakers Bakery.
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Great location at the end of town, quiet and right at the entrance of Custer State Park. The rooms are small but newly renovated and tastefully decorated. A great deal for the price!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Don’t let the outward appearance fool you. We had one of our most comfortable nights at this motel.
- Faye (8/5): - Convenient location, close to Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park & Jewel Cave National Monument. Two separate rooms, would be great for a family. A good value for the price.
- Elaine (4/5): - The area was wonderful. Custer was a great place vacation at. The hotel was not so great. It reeked and stunk of mold. Less than 24 hours there are my lungs were burning.
- Lisa (8/5): - Staff was great beds was the most comfortable that we had at any hotel we stayed it looks a little scary on the outside but clean on the inside .
- Jonathan (10/5): Pleased from AZ - Cute place by Custer. You get a great value to stay here. No breakfast or amenities, but great clean room for the price. Beds were comfy and perfect to just crash a night. Staff was helpful and friendly.
- Susan (2/5): This place is NOT IN BUSINESS - We arrived at Mystic Valley Inn a few days after receiving a RE-CONFIRMATION from Hotels.com only to find a mess of a motel with construction equipment in front of it. We knocked on the office door. No one answered. We walked all around the motel, no one was there. We looked in the windows. Everything was torn apart as if they were remodeling. Why we were not notified of the closure of this motel is beyond us. Looks like hotels.com does not keep track of the resorts they sell. I had a very bad feeling about this place when I tried to re-confirm on my own. No one ever answered the phone, but the number was not of out service. No answering machine, either.
Thankfully, we had been on a walk and we walked past a place down the road from Mystic Valley Inn that looked really cute called Calamity Peak Lodge. When we fond Mystic Valley Inn was not open for business, we drove down the road and checked in at Calamity Peak Lodge which is so much more appealing than the outside looks of the Mystic Valley Inn. My friends and I rented a two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen for less than what two separate rooms would have cost us at Mystic Valley Inn. We were so happy!! It worked out way better for us in the end.
- Cowboy Bob (6/5): Ok. - Signage outside was small & difficult to see from a distance. Rooms didn't provide enough outlets for cell phone chargers, alarm clocks, blow dryers...
- Tuyet-Mai (8/5): Convenient and Cozy - Had a good time. Good location for access to places I needed to go to.
A smaller room, but perfect for our needs.
- Anne (10/5): Wonderful Hotel In Custer - Quaint older style hotel on the outskirts of Custer. Wonderful check in experience - very happy and gave us lots of information.
Room was very well presented with little extra touches. The 2 queen beds were very comfortable and there was a good aircon unit which could be regulated. The bathroom had been updated and was very clean.
Only a 5 minute drive into the main street of Custer.
- Sue (4/5): They Need New Beds! - Staff was very friendly, The room was quiet and very clean. The beds were horrible. One was like sleeping in quicksand the other smelled so strongly of laundry detergent, I was wheezing in minutes. No sleep that night. Only spent one night. The price was great but not when there's no sleep to be had.
- Mic (6/5): Clean, except for the floors. - Staff was friendly and helpful. There was no breakfast unless you count coffee and tea. (I do not drink either.) It was well located for visiting Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. It is updated for a hotel of its age, but the floors were not very clean. Still for a short stay I would return.
- Laura (2/5): BED BUGS IN ROOM 7!!!! - We arrived after dark and motel looked rundown but hard to tell in the dark. Young girl at check-in was polite and efficient. Room looked fairly clean (carpeting was stained in areas). Went to sleep about 11:00PM and woke up at 1:00AM covered in bed bugs of at least two species. TOTALLY DISGUSTING. Went to office and rang bell and a nice woman followed me to the room to see the bugs. She was very apologetic and refunded my credit card. We left and went to Comfort Inn down the road. Suggest you do the same.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hotel requires work to improve the standards - The location is good and the price is reasonable
Could use some more work to improve there standards
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Overpriced ($100 a day) for a "motel" along a highway.
- Family of 4 (8/5): Charming small lodge - We stayed one night before heading to Mt. Rushmore in the morning. The bedding was very scented with either dryer sheets or detergent. I didn't care for that. But we enjoyed being able to park right outside our room door. The room was very charming and had nice toiletries (including makeup remover pads).
- Carol (6/5): - Beds were very comfortable but the room was very small for three adults. Also carpet was dirty needed cleaning. Rather hard to find from the road. No noticeable signs to help find it. Probably would have missed it without GPS.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean Hotel - Hotel is clean, room is a little crowded with 2 beds, table is small and no breakfast. Staff is nice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice location and great place to stay - I really enjoyed my stay at this location. It was a quiet location but not so out of the way to be inconvenient. Lots of nice little touches in the room that made it feel more than the generic hotel room I usually encounter.
- Nick (10/5): Very nice small motel - Clean, quiet and reasonable price!
I will stay here again, if there is a chance.
- Kim (2/5): WHAT ROOM?? - We have no real opinion. They gave our room away by being overbooked. Confirmation number is worthless if they don't hold the room. We daye it poor service.
- cheri (10/5): Nice hotel with lots of family charm - Stayed here for one day at the beginning of the Sturgis bike rally. The staff was great and SUPER friendly. The room was small but VERY efficient. Nice mini fridge and microwave. Flat screen tv and shampoo, soap, and conditioner supplied. Soft towels. Bed was SOOOO comfy:-) Great stay and would love to come back. Close to town, many restraunts and a market close as well. Within 20-40 mins of many Dakota attractions. Just do it-book a nice, friendly place to stay-Kudos:-). Also, no issues with parking-delightful
- richard (6/5): Good for an overnight stay - Stayed for just one night on road trip out west after touring the Black Hills. the room was very small, but clean, and comfortable. It is priced to fit my budget. Would return again if in the area.
- Clarice (8/5): - We stayed at this hotel to go sightseeing and this was easily accessible to what we wanted to see.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Doesn't look like much from the outside but the room was clean, the bed comfortable. Nothing wrong with the place if all you need is a place to sleep.
- Pennie (10/5): - Family owned and, awesome.
- Cathy and John (8/5): Great staff and nothing wrong with this motel - They are upgrading as much as they can at a time I liked this place. The only thing I would have liked was a coffeemaker in my room, but it wasn't a to die for if it wasn't there. They had a microwave and refrigerator in it. Which was wonderful we will stay there again.
- Sarah (8/5): - Small room but clean and cozy. Great lake just down the road.
- john (2/5): One-step away from Camping outside - Rooms are created out of an old trailer. Rooms are at best, 10 x 10. No wifi, toilet had to be plunged, bed was soft, sits right next to a road too. Pictures on website are NOT indicative of what you'll actually get!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Budget value. - The family that owns and runs the Mystic are really nice but they need to do some work for me to wholeheartedly recommend it. The air conditioner and refrigerator were really loud and they need to put some better light and sound blocking drapes on the east facing Windows. The bathroom smelled really bad all of the time and there was no room for toiletries.
- margaret (10/5): Quaint, quiet retreat - Staff greeted us warmly and was helpful with restaurant suggestions. We loved the old wooden-seated swings in the front yard. What a treat to sway and look around. It was quiet at night. We loved the knotty pine wood walls. We would stay at Mystic again if in the area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good no frills accommodation - We checked in late and departed early in the morning so we didn't have too much time to see anything other than the room. The room was small, a little old, but clean. Overall we were happy to find a place so close to Rushmore for such a reasonable price. We would have liked it if there was breakfast included and alarm clocks in the room but we got by fine without. If you're looking for a no frills clean room this is it.
- Ludeen (10/5): Loved the rustic look. Cliose to town and shopping - We stayed 2 nights. They came and straightened the room brought us clean towels while we were gone.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Much better than I expected it to be! - The location is excellent - nestled in the gorgeous rock formations around Custer, SD in the beautiful Black Hills, but outside of the town. The hotel is right on a busy main highway, but it was still quiet and enjoyable. This hotel is also just 1 or 2 miles down the road from a beautiful mountain lake and near the entrance to Custer State Park, the Needles Highway, and the Crazy Horse monument.
Don't let the outside appearance of this motel fool you -- the room we had was much nicer than I thought it was going to be when I saw the outside! The room was spacious and fit our needs very well. The mattresses were heavenly and featured a very nice soft pillow top. This was the best sleep night I had in almost three weeks of traveling to a different hotel each night! I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills without having to stay in a town or city!
Additional 'touches' added to the room that you don't normally find in cheaper hotels were appreciated -- i.e. Lifesaver mints arranged in a welcoming pattern across the beds, washcloths folded into a design and held together with Q tips and flowers on the beds, a bottle of water in the bathroom, and the cute arrangement of the shampoo/conditioner/soap bottles inside a washcloth on the bathtub were all very nice finishing touches which were much appreciated after a long, hot day of driving! It looks like the owners are really trying hard to make this an inviting place to stay!
- Jennifer (10/5): Nice place away from home. - We ate breakfast and supper out on the porch. It was nice. We brought our own milk and cereal. And, bought food in town.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very clean and comfortable. Nice big room for a family, great kitchen area. Two small negatives - wifi rarely worked and the tv was in a terrible location, we bumped into it at every pass.
- Sandy (8/5): Family Vacation - Great place, good price for the area. Clean
- Heather (8/5): Super cute and cozy - My kids and I really enjoyed our stay. The room was clean and cozy and had decor fitting the area. Staff was very helpful and friendly.
- Deb (10/5): hidden gem! - Hidden gem! Excellent staff! Small older bldg...but new decor and very clean. We loved it!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nicest staff - We pulled into this hotel early and they went out of their way to get us in the room ASAP. This place needs some fixing up but it met our needs for the one night we were there. The mattresses and linens need updating.
- siviva (6/5): The Good. The Bad. The Lovely - The good.
Staff friendly. Kids (15&20) were glad they didn't have to share a bed. The fridge was a nice touch. Air condition worked well. My husband (300 pds) said the bed was comfortable.
The Bad
Even though it was kind of two rooms it was really small for four big adults. Bathroom worked but it was smaller than a walk in closet. One TV didn't work and they were awkwardly located. Internet was spotty.
The Lovely
We slept there. We were centrally located. We were there one day. Drove 30 mins to Jewel Cave to get our tickets. Came back to town for breakfast- the hotel gave us a 10% discount. Food was great. One hour from rapid city Half hour to Rushmore. .
- Jacqueline (10/5): Driving trip - Alittle way out of town but a great place to stay. For the price it was ideal for us.
- Ashley (10/5): Great place to stay - Great hotel and grest huge room
- Peter (6/5): OK hotel. - Room had a chemical spell, perhaps from newly installed carpet or construction work being done on site. New owners are working on improvements - should be getting better
- Ben (2/5): Wouldnt stay here again - Room only had a full sized bed. Room was small not very clean. Floor boards by the door were spongy. Could see through the heating vent into the bathroom which is kinda creepy.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - They did not support breakfast, but their morning snack is enough for a normal person. It is warm and honest family business.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice for one night - Rough on the outside but cute on the inside.
Room was clean and nice.
- Jamie (10/5): Great room and very helpful hotel staff! - My boyfriend and I stayed here, after we had a rough start to our vacation, and it was very nice to see the towel shaped into a snail decoration when we entered the room. And the staff was very accommodating with our late arrival as we Called ahead to let the staff know we would later then check in time and the were very helpful with making sure we would still be able to get into our room. Especially after a very long day of traveling on the road! I would definitely recommend this hotel to others!
- RICHARD (8/5): Cozy cabin-like feel! - The front of the hotel is dated and in need of updating but the new owners is a family doing he work themselves. Small, but Very cozy!!
- Perry (8/5): Close to all major sights - Our stay was very nice at this motel. The owners are some of the nicest people I have ever met and aim to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. It's location just outside of town is perfect for me because at night it is very quiet and peaceful and perfect for relaxing after a day of seeing all the sights in the black hills.
- Keith (8/5): Worth it for the price - This is a very small motel. The staff was friendly and the room was neat and clean. It was a little cramped, but worth the price.
- Ryan (10/5): Peace and Quiet:) - It was very nice! It's a nice and quiet little place to call it a night at. It's relaxing and peaceful and the owner is wonderful and her children are incredibly sweet and kind!
- Larry (4/5): low cost - If I arrived late and just needed a bed & shower I would have stayed.
- Tony (8/5): Clean and comfortable - Two of us stayed in room #1. Super clean and furniture and beds were good. Room had a funny arrangement for the beds (can only watch TV from one bed).
- Sandra (8/5): Custer - Good Value - Internet service was not always available, but hey we were on vacation - so relax! Great to have frig & microwave. Nice relaxing place - sit on the deck and enjoy the outdoors.
- Verified traveler (8/5): nice inexpensive motel - A little rustic but lovely touches in the room and the staff were great. Highly recommend if you're looking for an inexpensive motel in the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great back up option! - Pro: remodeled motel, smell new (except room #1 next to the front desk, Trisha the owner said they will fix the problem of the moldy smell.), very very clean, comfortable bed and very soft comforter (I will have back pain if the bed is not good)! The owner was very nice and helped us to solve problems during our stay. Cheaper price with higher quality.
Con: Water contains iron so is not drinkable. Body smells rusty after shower. Wifi is terrible. The wall is thin; old lady like me could not handle people talking next door while sleeping. The motel is next to the big road so will be noisy around 6:30 am in the morning when people started to head out for breakfast and site seeing. No breakfast provided by the motel. (Don’t go to the restaurant called wranglers cafe. They provided terrible service and expensive price with below average food!) The motel sign is still call "Motel Valley" while the google map and hotel.com map are both inaccurately directed the motel location. The motel is located at the corner of Mt. Rushmore Rd. and Spring place (on the Mt Rushmore Rd. across the camping area). We missed this place 3 times due to bad map direction, the motel did not turn on the sign at night and the area was very dark without light. The motel will be close between 10/1-3/31 for the season.
Overall, the owners are trying very hard to improve the quality of the motel. I hope they will solve the water and Wifi problems and continuing the nice little motel!
- Cheri (8/5): Charming Room! - We loved the room as soon as we opened the door! It was obvious the couple that owned the place had undated it and refinished the knotty pine paneling. It was perfect for a place in Custer, SD. The little details that aren't necessary but make it nicer were noticed by both of us--a little snail made of wash clothes on the bed and other small details.
- Namcy (6/5): Nice motel. Didn't look good from road. New ow - New owner trying to improve it. It was nice for the price. Not too high.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Basic hotel in good location - Had no record of my booking on arrival but fortunately had spare rooms
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great little place to visit Mount Rushmore. Cheap, clean and very convenient.
- Robert (8/5): Hillside Paradise - Great little quaint hotel. Wi fi was sporadic but one should be exploring the Black Hills when staying here so it was ok. Clean comfortable and lovely!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent find! Room was clean and very comfortable! I've spent a lot more and gotten a lot less. Staff was very nice also. Would definitely stay there again if I travel back to the Mount Rushmore area.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Motel close to all Black Hills Venues. Staff very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Closest motel to Custer Park - Excellent value. Close to all major attractions. Friendly Staff
- Gia (8/5): Nice - A quiet, pleasant small motel which vintage knotty pine decor. It was a restful night.
- Elisabeth (8/5): Great time! - No Frills, but in the heart of it all! Minutes from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, and Custer State Park! The hotel is run by a really nice family and we were well taken care of! Make sure to go down to the Buffalo Corral and Prairie dog Village!
- Theodora (10/5): Clean, friendly, and would go back - Initially, we questioned whether we should stay due to the "rundown" appearance of the mobile home court behind the motel, so we stopped in to visit with the receptionist & looked at the room. They are new owners and the room and "lobby" was immaculately clean, the owners were so friendly and accommodating (we needed a hair dryer which they had in the lobby for anyone. I realize they cannot change the court behind them but that is why there is a 3 under neighborhood. We were very pleased and would stay again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The only problem at this place was the water smell and taste to rusted pipes. the customer service was great and courteous, the place was quiet.
- hillbilly (6/5): 3 days at Custer State Park - Hotel room was clean. Not a lot of room to put luggage, cooler etc. bathroom small but did the job. Nice to have a microwave and small refrigerator. curb appeal lacking and detracts from the property. Owners were very nice. Would only recommend to friends as long as they understand that hotel is small and don't mind the outward appearance.
- Judith (8/5): - Rustic but clean and recent upgrades. Nice personnel and helpful.
- Virginia (8/5): - Overall this little place is a gem! The room was clean, the owners were friendly and helpful. I'd stay here again.
- YC (8/5): Worth the value and comfortable - Family of five staying in a five adult room. Good for family plans to stay longer than two days to explore the surroundings since the room is equipped with utensils and a kitchen.
Though the motel is a kind of old and next to highway 16, it is quiet and provides a in a nature feel.
- Jason (8/5): Close vicinity to Mount Rushmore & Custer St Park - The staff was great, we loved the room, great experience.
- Elsie b (8/5): - I was a little apprehensive, because it right in front of a trailer court that wasn't too pleasing to the eye. We were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were newly remodeled, very clean, and very eye appealing. We would recommend it to anyone staying in Custer...very affordable.
- Linda (8/5): We had a pleasant stay. Quiet and very clean. - We were a little worried about the unit abutting a mobile home park, but all was well. Quiet and very clean. Owners are working to update the motel. Close to Mt. Rushmore and the adjoining area (Custer State Park). Two rooms (a queen in one bedroom; queen & single in other) plus small bath and small kitchenette area in between bedrooms. Especially liked the small (maybe 12 cu ft?) refrig with nice size freezer, microwave, toaster, stove and plenty of outlets for electronic devices. Owners updating motel.
- Lawrence (8/5): - Hotel was very clean and perfect for a short stay. Room was small if that kind of thing matters to you.
- Kevin (6/5): Older hotel, Family run business - The hotel staff, which is a family run business, were very helpful and friendly. They really wanted us to have a nice stay and offered what they could to help us out including advice on where to go in the area. They admitted when they had not been somewhere so that we understood they had not experience it first hand.
The hotel itself is rather old. The owners are attempting to keep it well kept. The queen mattress that we slept on was very tired and my wife and I had to climp out of the crevace in the center. The water is soft water - the older style with a definate soft water smell and feel. The wifi, while free, barely reached our room. There was a second bed, a double, that my two girls slept on. They didnt' have any complaints that they voiced to us - but they just spent the past week camping on cots or pads, so they were happy.
It is on the outskirts of the town of Custer, so there was no noise from town and only minimal noise from the road. We were in the Black Hills just after a Bike Rally, so there were a large number of bikers in town. The location was choice if you are looking to drive around the Black Hills or visit Mt Rushmore. We are glad we picked this over a hotel in the middle of Custer or Keystone.
Overall, the hotel was OK. It was a quaint, quiet hotel, where the staff try to take care of you, but there are a few details that made us question our judgement.
- Kimberly (6/5): - Very clean but could use a little updating. The customer service was great! Overall we liked it
- Verified traveler (10/5): Don't judge the outside - Rooms look much better than the outside of the hotel. We loved this room. It is very cozy inside. Enjoyed the microwave and refrigerator. Very clean room.
- Bob (8/5): Older motel very well managed. - Great facility with kitchens and plenty of room. Very well taken care of.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We had trouble finding the motel since the sign was removed! It was clean but really showing its age. Bed was uncomforable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Worked for one night stay - _ water had a sulfur smell and tasted bad - probably why a complimentary bottle of water was provided in room
- room & linens were clean, staff was friendly
- internet service was sporadic
- old motel with some updates/renovations to interior
- close proximity to Rushmore & Crazy Horse
