It has an amazing Presidential Sweet.Drinks are top shelf, service is amazing, cleanliness is a standard. The beds are so comfortable you don't want to leave. You can get a relaxing fireplace,jetted tub and amazing service without ever leaving the room. This is the luxury I live for. I never do anything half way it's all or nothing. Bring friends ,come alone but you're always getting a bargain no matter what you spend. I always come back here.

At the end of the trip when I asked my kids what their favorite was, they unanimously chose the Des Lux. It was comfortable and quirky, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

We have family in Des Moines and have been trying different hotels each stay and the Des Lux is by far a favorite. Comfortable beds, well appointed rooms. Breakfast was excellent. Appreciated that there was a city lot across the street as well as amble street parking. Also appreciated that there was always someone available at the front desk. We will be staying again.
- jboo239 (10/5): Fantastic! Will be going back. - Des Lux was great! A neat building with history. Very clean. The bar area is nice and the breakfast was better than expected with lots of options and grab-n-go items. We didn't get to use it but the gym is also very nice with more workout and spa equipment than most. We have a wedding for a friend coming up in July. Even though Des Lux is further from the venue for us, we are still going to book a room with them.

- 981rebekahb (10/5): Fun experience - If you value history or just oddities like I do, this hotel is a true gem. The amenities are modern but the atmosphere is like walking into the early 1900’s. There is a ton of history in this building and it is displayed in a comfortable and elegant style.
- Passport171544 (10/5): Sister weekend - Wonderful staff, very clean, and the decor is unique. Definitely worth checking out. Breakfast selection was above the standard.
- thechronictraveller (10/5): Definitely not a cookie-cutter chain hotel! - The hotel doesn’t take themselves too seriously, and indeed the lobby has a dark, goth and really quirky ground floor. Think of it as the Cabinet of Curiosities. There are big book cases, Egyptian and Greek statues, a grand piano and exposed brickwork. It’s an old gentleman’s club they have converted to a hotel. The place had so much character, a lot of it quirky. Upstairs, my room was huge, with a sitting chair, desk, giant credenza, 2 sinks in the bathroom, small fridge and a coffee machine. This is in addition to an old fashioned looking phone and a bedside clock. It was really cool and retro, but all quite modern. I loved the place, and was disappointed I could only spend one night. They also included a decent breakfast in the room rate. There is no free parking, but rather it is $10 per day for the garage across the street.

When we asked for early check-ins we were easily accommodated as well as a late check-out the day after the wedding! The rooms were clean and the atmosphere matched our wedding theme of elegant! We would absolutely stay here again!

- haroldo634 (8/5): Nice hotel. Needs a better gym - It is a nice hotel in a good location. It is old, so the walls are not well protected against sound. We chose Des Lux over similar hotels because of the gym. There is a hot tub in the next room, and there are no walls, so the gym is hot. Also, one of the two treadmills was broken, and the nice rowing machine was broken. We told the front desk but it was not fixed by the time we left.

- M4104PIchrish (10/5): The spot in Des Moines for a couples weekend - We had a great stay for a quick couples getaway. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The staff helped to make our stay enjoyable and Mary took care of setting up dinner and other activities for us, which was much appreciated. It's walking distance to the farmers market and local breweries and other restaurants, which we enjoyed. I can't understate the service from the entire staff, they really care about their customers. We would definitely stay here again.

The ambiance of the hotel is tranquil with some gothic vibes. The rooms are incredible, the whirlpool bath is a godsend, and the fireplace is magical. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The hotel is also in downtown, so there are plenty of places within a few blocks to walk to for food and things you may have forgotten. I would highly recommend this hotel for a nice getaway.

Additionally the physical appearance of the hotel is so interesting and warm. The rooms are spacious and very comfy. We couldn't stop talking about our experience. Upon arrival they said “I hope you don’t mind but we upgraded your room.” I thought I already had an awesome room. Wow, incredible accommodations as we were upgraded to the presidential suite! Had a few drinks before the concert at the hotel bar and they were on point. Highly recommended staying at Des lux. We will be back again and access to the hotel was great with cheap parking just across the street. The receptionists were very friendly and the room was very clean.

- LaineyLou81 (10/5): A great place to stay in Des Moines - My husband and I stayed at the Des Lux for one night during a cross country road trip. In a word: wow! The hotel is beautifully styled, and our room was very spacious and well equipped. The bed was extremely comfortable. We enjoyed our cocktails at the bar, and we also appreciated the quality of the free breakfast. Several good restaurants within walking distance as well. Highly recommend this hote!

- WanderingShrink80 (10/5): A beautiful and romantic getaway spot! - We stayed at the Des Lux while we were in town visiting friends and attending an alumni event for my college. What a beautiful hotel! The room was spacious, comfortable, and swaaanky! One thing we really appreciated was just how well sound-proofed the rooms were. On our second day there, a 21st birthday party checked in across the hall and we worried about being disturbed by a lot of late night ruckus. They were either the quietest 21 year olds ever, or the soundproofing is just that good because we never heard a peep! The breakfast buffet each morning was quite good and the attendants were friendly and attentive. We had drinks one evening in the martini bar and enjoyed the atmosphere and the service. We added the Grand Romance package for the last evening of our stay, which was a very special experience. I failed to make a note of the names of our massage therapists (darnit!) but they both did a fantastic job. Coming back from dinner to chilled sparkling wine and a room filled with candles was a beautiful and special way to end our visit. We had a great stay at the Des Lux and will definitely visit again if we're ever back in the area!

- Y2314TDcindyh (10/5): Friendly Hotel Staff and Friendly City - This was a beautiful hotel. The rooms were large and loved the double sinks in the bathrooms. The included breakfast each day was amazing, hot items included. Mary at the front desk was so helpful with restaurant recommendations, best way to get the the Fair and even arranged for the shuttle to take us to the Botanical Garden and pick us up. Thank you Mary and Joe for making our stay so comfortable. Will be back again!

Just seemed outdated for the rest of the room and bathroom. Otherwise, fantastic place to stay!

It was less than half a mile walk to the farmer's market, and there were several breweries and restaurants also in walking distance. Staff was extremely friendly. Hotel was quiet...we never heard our neighbors. Highly recommend.

Plusses: architecture, room size, great bathrooms, spacious gym, staff was incredibly helpful and friendly Minuses: Breakfast was OK; a little better than a Hampton Inn. And the TV’s need to be upgraded to streaming-capable.

Property is walkable to entertainment and dining options. The ONLY complaint is that the large blue LED light on the beer/wine fridge is SO BRIGHT that it's distracting at bedtime. I covered the darn thing with two towels and the light still bled through.
- PATRICIAR899 (10/5): A good time was had by all - I booked seven rooms for me and friends attending the DesMoines Metro Opera Festival. All the rooms were exactly as reserved, the kinds and the locations. The breakfast offerings are wide ranging and generous. The space is inviting and spacious enough to gather with one’s group. Estela was on top of things, replacing items as needed and showing guests where what they needed was located. The front desk staff was outstanding. Shuttle service was provided whenever possible. The lobby area is great for socializing which was an extra bonus for us, many of whom see each other only once a year. The bar is stunning and the drink I ordered, a Manhattan, was excellent. Several of our group used the exercise and spa area and were impressed. We’ve rebooked for next year. Extra shout outs for Sandy Poundstone, the shuttle drivers and Estela.

- InTheMoment_TBD (10/5): Great Bartender - We came to town for an alumni event. Each room at Des Lux is unique so It's always interesting what you get. We had a nice sitting area with a fireplace. But what really made the stay great was Shary, the very fun, hardworking and competent bartender. We'd return just to visit her.
