Guest Reviews
- Trudy (10/5): Lovely and homely - Lovely food and room with privacy Nothing
- Millership (10/5): Fantastic! My favourite place to stay in the area. - Perfect! my favourite place to stay when I'm in the area. Nothing!
- Andrew (9/5): Only stayed for the one night but the rooms, food and pub side were excellent - Meals were excellent and in very pleasant surroundings. There was nothing not to like
- Millership (10/5): Fantastic, Comfy and just Fab! - I stay in Hotels all the time, some big chains and some small, this .is my new favourite. 10/10
I will stay again when I'm in the area Nothing
- Nic (10/5): Excellent would return anytime and can’t recommend enough. Food menu is absolutely fantastic. - Quiet location, however it’s situated just right for travelling in and around Newmarket Nothing it was great staff were amazing
- Nicki (10/5): -
- Susan (9/5): Great location, attentive staff - breakfast excellent in weekend days only - Quiet and great location
Food at restaurant was excellent
Staff very helpful and attentive
Breakfast at weekend - excellent - in restaurant area Breakfast on weekdays - breakfast bag delivered to room night before - obviously not as good
- Trudy (10/5): -
- Nafzger (8/5): Prima - Nvt NVT
- Janet (9/5): Enjoyable. Location great. Enjoyed our few days there. - Breakfast was continental ok, but would have preferred cooked or cereals etc. Staff were very friendly. En suite needed just a little spruce up, otherwise all ok.
- Christopher (10/5): -
- Julia (9/5): Wouldn’t hesitate in booking again - A really good night’s sleep thanks to a very comfortable bed, lovely pillows and bedding, and no noise. The room was spacious and warm, lots of hanging space and the water pressure in the shower was great.
Had a delicious meal in the evening. Whilst the breakfast to go is convenient for an early start, it was a bit too sugary. Suggest maybe addition of plain instant porridge?
No hairdryer so had to request one - easy to assume there’d already be one in the room. Also asked to borrow an iron and ironing board but this was no problem and was delivered to my room straightaway.
These are tiny points and they wouldn’t put me off booking again. it was a great stay.

- Pauline (7/5): Perfectly adequate for a short stay. - Breakfast was very good. The water in the bathroom basin did not drain properly.
Not enough breakfast /Yorkshire tea or sugar in the room.
- Steve (8/5): Great staff, food good and location quiet - Location and food Rooms are a bit tired.

- Alan (9/5): -
- Robert (10/5): - Very comfortable room and friendly, helpful staff
- Deborah (8/5): - Friendly service, attentive and caring staff.
Atmosphere was warm and cosy in the hotel.
Restaurant food excellent.
Parking easy.
Location great. Cold room with no real extra blankets.
Unusually low bed.
Complicated TV for foreigners.
- Sara (6/5): Ok for a short stay - Restaurant food Room smelt musty
- Katharine (8/5): - Comfy bed. Nice room, food nice in restaurant, staff friendly. Would recommend. Would go back. No vegan options with cooked breakfast, but hosts knew I was dairy free and had ready some lactose free milk if I wanted it, so if you're vegan you could request the sausages in advance and they may be helpful. No downsides though apart from hotel is a bit out from the city centre.
- Callum (8/5): - Breakfast wasn’t great
- neil (10/5): Excellent place to stay . Great food - Staff couldn’t do enough for you . Food was truly outstanding . Eat both nights and both nights food was amazing Nothing .
- Stephen (6/5): - Location very good.
Quite rooms.
Comfy bed. Continental breakfast brought to room.
The room looked tired and could do with refurbishment.
No smart TV
- Sara (8/5): Good - Location and decor Damp smell on entry breakfast could be a porridge
- Harford (10/5): Short Break - Location, food, staff. Nothing
- Simon (8/5): -
- florence (5/5): Okay for a short stay if you need to be nearby, great food but some rooms better than others. - Good location for a wedding we were attending and the pub itself has really great food.
The breakfast included was really great- we upgraded to the cooked breakfast option. the room was very dirty and the bathroom not cleaned when we arrived. We did raise this with staff when we checked in which was a bit awkward and uncomfortable but unfortunately not a lot was done to resolve other than a courtesy once over with a wipe.
no soap provided just a half empty bottle or multipurpose “anti-bac wash” to serve as hand soap and body wash so we had to go back out once we arrived to buy soap
The bed was unreasonable soft and oddly low down so wasn’t very comfortable to sleep in. The room was also quite hot but this is due to it being middle of summer, a fan would have been a nice addition bur we admittedly did not ask for one either so can’t say either way if this would have been resolved.
Overall I think we drew a bit of a short straw with the room we were allocated in an annexed off part of the building as friends we have who were staying at the same time had rooms in the main part of the building with none of the issues we had.
- Jason A Griffin (9/5): -
- Ben (9/5): -
- Nic (7/5): - Very low bed.
- Maria (9/5): We would stay here again. Lucy was just great - It was a lovely little pub and the room was separate to the pub in a little accommodation type block. The room was very big and lovely. It had all we needed inside. The member of staff called Lucy was absolutely great. Very very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. It was lovely to have someone like that, she made our stay and made us feel very welcome The only negative was there was a tea bag left in our little teapot. It had obviously been missed by the cleaners. but it wasnt a big problem and the staff were great about getting it sorted (Lucy)
- Patrick (8/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Nigel (10/5): On the whole very good - Was excellent Shower needed some attention

- Max (8/5): -
- Tony (10/5): Our accommodation of choice in the area - We've stayed at the Old Red Lion before when attending family gatherings in Withersfield and this time it was just as good as before.
- Colin (9/5): - Friendly staff, great location for Cambridge
- Tim (10/5): Graat food, - Great food, ales and room
- McDonald (10/5): -
- Brian E (10/5): Old Red Lion, Horsheath - Staff very friendly & helpful
- Jason (6/5): Lovely dinner service - Stayed here for a business trip and dined here both nights. The meals and draft beers are higher recommended. The room itself was very basic, it felt like a portable cabin rather than room. Mid week a hot breakfast is not offered so we went to McDonald's instead. I am sensitive to sound and found the noise from the adjacent A road a bit disturbing. Keeping the windows closed blocked the noise out suffuciently.
- Gillian (8/5): Our stay overall was very good. - We were given a nice welcome on our arrival. Very efficient and helpful. The bed in our room had a very soft mattress so not very good for back support, but the room itself was comfortable.
- ALISON (8/5): Nice location to where we needed, evening food liked good although we did not try - Very nice and welcoming Wasn’t very impressed with take away breakfast, not very good value for money.
Also could have added shower gel to bathroom.
Apart from that lovely place to stay.
- John (9/5): - Excellent Food Very cold room
- Nicola (8/5): -
- Nick (10/5): - Great atmosphere and welcoming N/A
- Danny (9/5): Great place to stay - has everything needed - Very nice room, quiet location, nicely designed dining room and outside area Nothing
- Nigel (10/5): - Really nice country inn, peaceful, great dining and bar, staff really friendly and attentive
- Clair (8/5): Overall short stay but enjoyed our evening meal good to see real quality bedding - Breakfast good good variety Lighting over make up mirror air conditioning mattress needs turning
- Philippe (8/5): Enjoyable stay and close to Cambridge - Great stay -
- Alan (9/5): It’s the second time we’ve stayed here a perfect location to visit Newmarket Nights. - The location to get to and from Newmarket
- Willibald (8/5): -
- Ann (10/5): Great value - Great food lovely rooms very good value for money Nothing
- Pantony (9/5): Great stop over - Very clean and tidy, great staff.
Nice evening meal from the bar
Morning breakfast was simple but adaquiti
I would stay again if I was in the area again. Nothing.
- John (10/5): Good room, small but comfortable and great breakfa - Lovely stay due to a work conference
- Rob (5/5): Lovely staff but need to look into the little things like fans in rooms for the summer - Location It was 34 degrees and no fans or air conditioning in any rooms
- Robin (9/5): Great place to stay with great staff & facilities - Friendly atmosphere, excellent food options in the restaurant and lots different drinks to choose from. Staff were very friendly and helpful Nothing
- S (8/5): Lovely stay - Everything was great, food, location, staff, service, breakfast, room.
The only thing I can suggest is the bed and mattress needs updating very noisy (only have to sit on it) and mattress dips into the middle.
- Julian (8/5): Excellent choice for a stay for a wedding nearby. - The staff were fantastic and the food excellent, both at breakfast and our evening meal. Nothing was too much trouble.
The room was spacious and comfortable. The lighting in the room was a little dim.
- Robin (8/5): -
- Alan (10/5): This was a last minute decision to stay here and the Old Red Lion Inn didn’t disappoint us. - A large portion comfortable room, with amazing staff throughout. Nothing
- Peter (10/5): Glad we opted for the Old Red Lion Inn - My wife and I wanted a room for the night so that we could visit Duxford aerodrome and the Old Red Lion seemed to fit the bill. When we booked, booking.com said there was only a twin room available so we opted for that. Upon arrival, seeing we were a couple, we were immediately offered a double bedded room without even asking. The room we had was large and well furnished. The bed - oh yes, the bed —— couldn’t fit it in my case so had to leave it. Shame really because it was so comfortable.
We stayed for supper so that I could have a couple beers without worrying about driving. The meal was lovely and our server was a young lady working her first ever shift. She was watched over to make sure things were done properly. That was something that I liked about the place; they have a policy of helping young people take their first steps in the world of hospitality which is most commendable.
Breakfast was unhurried with a good selection to choose from, not that I could do it justice after the previous nights meal.
We will be returning to the area in a couple of months time and the Old Red Lion will be our first choice for accommodation. Nothing to make a comment about.
- Matt (10/5): Excellent in every way - Fantastic and friendly staff, impeccably clean rooms, comfortable beds and a hot, powerful shower. Nice little continental breakfast left in our room for the morning, too. Would definitely recommend!
- Sarah (10/5): - Everything was amazing
- PKokkinos (6/5): -
- Andrea (9/5): - Excellent approachable staff .Very accommodating to our needs. Spacious rooms.Pub was lovely.Breakfast was just the right amount of options. The room was light very early in the morning due to the high windows above the door to the outside .The view out of large window on to rural land at the back was not great due to a stack of rubbish (possibly for a bonfire).A blind on the back window would solve this.
- John (8/5): -
- Richard (8/5): Good stopover - Good pub, restaurant with rooms, well decorated The quirky shower in the bath was not very practical. 2 of the room lights need new bulbs.
- Al (8/5): - Close to the main road lovely building great room.attentive staff.nice breakfast Nothing
- moushumi (7/5): -
- Christopher (8/5): -
- marc (8/5): -
- Catherine (9/5): As we expected but staff made it way better. Location will be good for later stays as we need to, - Nice continental breakfast. Staff very attentive and helpful regarding my mother being frail nothing was a bother Nice cooked breakfast ?
- heather (9/5): -
- James (9/5): Visiting friends in the village - The continental breakfast that's included in the price is excellent, although I elected for the full english at £10.50 extra which was well worth it.
The ladies taking care of us couldn't be more helpful with coffee top ups etc.
Top notch. There was only one option for breakfast time - 0900, but in the end it worked out fine as we weren't in a hurry.
As a Northerner I would have prefered some beans on the fry up, but when in Rome etc... so no massive deal.
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- kitty99999 (10/5): - Good
- Peter (9/5): - Clean modern rooms, excellent dinner and helpful staff. DIY breakfast very limited. Would have liked a bit more choice.
- Warner (9/5): - Beautiful place, great meals, good staff ( always smiling),very comfortable & good transport links. Nothing
- Colin (10/5): Musical Rooms. - Very friendly staff and atmosphere. Good parking. Good restaurant and bar.
- anita (10/5): - Friendly and helpful staff. Nothing
- owen (4/5): Evening meal was excellent. Shame about the breakfast.outside tables very sticky covered In insects. - The breakfast was awefull. Continental sat in a brown bag all day and night in 30 degree heat is not acceptable when there's a perfectly good kitchen on site. Very poor and no other breakfast option. The breakfast and cleanliness.
