Guest Reviews
- John (8/5): The owner was very helpful and responsive. - Great location. Central to everything I wanted to see and do.

- Lauren (7/5): Perfect location. Not much in terms of amenities, but it's fine for the price. - Bed was comfortable and the location and price were perfect for my one-night stay. Common space was adequate and bath was fine. I liked the feel of an old-fashioned boarding house with a hip twist. The street noise at night was a bit much. Next time, I will ask for a room on the back of the building.
- ileana (10/5): -
- Antje (8/5): -
- Heather (9/5): Great location for the Mile End and Le Plateau adventure. - The property is in a really fun neighborhood. It’s quirky and each room has a great design. The common area is comfortable and accessible. Maybe new carpets at some point. A kettle that would be easier to fill from the tap.
- Michael (10/5): Perfect place and location! Especially if you are playing or going to one of the venues below… - Amazing location, great room, helpful staff who really helped me in a bind.
- Nataliia (6/5): -
- Douglas (9/5): - Location is everything
The history of Pensione Popolo is very dear to my heart
Great food & music downstairs! Wish I could have stayed longer.

- Bianca (9/5): - Friendly staff, great value for money, comfy beds, clean room and bathrooms, common area with fridge and water boiler available. Steep staircase, outdoor traffic can get a little loud in the morning, would be nice if a microwave would be available.
- Shona (10/5): - The hotel really is like all the “pensions” I have stayed in travelling in Europe but cooler. It was not fancy but we knew that when booking it. The room was clean as were the shared bathroom facilities and although it was fully booked when we were there we didn’t have to wait to shower. Tammy is so lovely and welcoming - she gave us lots of recommendations about places on the neighborhood to eat and stores and streets to check out. We didn’t end up eating downstairs as we were out and about all day and evening but it looked great. Such a nice vibe, lots of art on the walls and a little common area. The location is amazing, we walked everywhere although there was public transit too. Will definitely stay there on our next trip to Montreal.
- Megan (8/5): Enjoyable stay in the heart of Montreal - Great location, in the heart of Montreal on the doorstep of plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and music venues. Room was cozy, they provide nice towels. The staff who work in the connected bar are extremely helpful & friendly. Some of the other guests left the shared bathrooms in sloppy condition (like not flushing the toilet); but other than that the cleaning staff did a good job. Wi-Fi was pretty slow, but it worked. There is no front desk and you need to use a pinpad to access the building & your room, so make sure that you receive the codes by e-mail before you arrive; I didn't because there was a technical glitch but the staff in the bar downstairs (connected to the accommodations) were extremely helpful in getting the information so I could gain access.

- NADEGE (8/5): Parfait - Chambre propre et confortable L’escalier très abrupte pour monter à l’étage des chambres
- Chloe (10/5): - 10/10 niche accommodation in a very desirable area of Montreal! Reminds me of a place I stayed at once in Vancouver. Cozy, safe, excellent decor, clean, comfy, fantastic host. If you’re looking for a comfortable stay for an unbeatable price this place is for you!
- Abiodun (7/5): -
- Cora (8/5): - Clean room, nice bathroom, great neighborhood, cute and eclectic vibe
- Colin (10/5): - Loved staying here, will be back!
- Sharon (8/5): - Friendly people in the restaurant and pension owner was very helpful by phone ( found/gave me parking!!). There’s no one on the premises to make inquiries to though. Love the art and feel of the place. Very clean and best showers anywhere! The bar and restaurant people were so lovely, I want to take them home with me.
- Heather (9/5): Great value, clean and comfortable. Super location. Very good staff, quick to respond to any issue - Great location, super value, comfort and cleanliness. We used the shared shower, bathroom facilities. We had a view out to a green space at the back of the property. One of the beds was more comfortable than the other. We could hear some other residents of the pensione as they climbed the stairs, slammed doors and came into their room in the late night. Not unexpected but too bad that they didn’t use quieter voices at 2 am.
- Heather (9/5): Great value, clean and well located. - Fantastic value for a comfortable room in a great location. Very clean room and bathroom. Didn’t expect the communal kitchen and lounge area to be so well set up. The room looked out at trees and backed onto a green space. The air conditioner didn’t work very well. We slept with the window open instead. Couldn’t initially find the air con controller S it was tucked into a drawer.
- Taylor (10/5): - Awesome location, perfect f for a night or two! Very clean & good hospitality
- Diana (6/5): - Fine
- Mali (2/5): - Clean room. Good location
- Joanna (6/5): - Good for a quick stay and for the price. It’s loud at night as others have said but i was able to sleep fine with ear plugs. It’s a cool quirky place for a quick stay. No eating allowed in the room. Mirror in the room would be great.
- Angus (10/5): - Great stay. All that we needed.
- Robert (8/5): - Great location at good price
- Jörg (8/5): -
- Lindsey (10/5): - The air conditioning was a huge plus! Very cute and unique place to stay. Perfect location, lots of walkable tourist spots as well as basics like pharmacy and convenience store. Staff were great communicators and accommodating. Will definitely stay here again, loved it!
- Donald (10/5): - Great location in a cool neighbourhood for a great price! Our host, Tammy, was super friendly and responsive. The room, plus shared bathrooms and common areas are clean and have that old Montreal vibe. Remember that you are staying at a well known music venue so the streets are lively and there is some noise bleed. That said, the rooms are soundproofed and we had no problems sleeping - bring earplugs if you are worried! Thanks for a great stay!
- Joaquin (10/5): - In the heart of Montreal's artist community this is a very friendly, welcoming spot to immerse yourself into the city's music and cultural scene. Don't go looking for a sauna or lounging in your room watching t.v all day, there is none of that. Clean, comfy, modest accommodations in a great location with good food and drinks downstairs and nearby. Live music downstairs certain evenings.
- Isabelle (8/5): -
- Graeme (8/5): Comfy and convenient! - Clean and affordable in a perfect location One of the two beds was a bit broken, but was fine as we only used one
- Christine (10/5): Une belle découverte pour sortir des sentiers battus. - Le professionnalisme, la disponibilité et la gentillesse de la gérante et de l'équipe. Le calme de l'établissement. La propreté. Les escaliers 😁
- Collin (8/5): - Tammy, the hotel manager was a great face to the Pensione Popolo. She upgraded our room, gave us a quick tour, and answered a few questions. The location of the hotel and price are our favorite features.
- Antje (10/5): -
- Sarah (10/5): -
- amandine (9/5): Super emplacement ! - La deco, le confort des chambres et des espaces communs, l’emplacement top! Tammy notre logeuse était dispo et très sympa Le bruit de la VMC dans les salles de bains vraiment trop fort
- Melissa (10/5): - Loved that it was above a mexican restaurant and we got a discount on dinner
- Tomiris (6/5): - It wasn't super clean but for one night with friends was pretty okay!
- OLIVIER (8/5): -
- Audrey (6/5): - Great option for a one night trip!
- Sarah (10/5): - Very nice, very clean and an excellent price.
- Chris (10/5): - 🍉
- Julia (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful management. Great area.
- Axelle (6/5): - Belle situation, bon rapport qualité prix et pratique Mobilier vieillot, lit très peu confortable : trop petit pour 2 personnes et matelas dur…
- Deborah (8/5): - Nice little place, very clean, on a busy street but sound was not an issue. Getting in and using the locks took a little learning.
- Maria (7/5): -
- Raj (10/5): - Would definitely stay again. P.s. toilets flush slow. If you gotta go do a test flush to make sure it can handle your output
- Caitlin (10/5): - I stayed at Pensione Popolo for multiple weeks on a work trip and Tammy the manager was super accommodating, available for questions and making sure the stay is going smoothly and comfortably. Amazing location right in the iconic Mile End, close to metros, bus lines and walking distance to different neighbourhoods, parks and food. Crisp A/C, fast wifi and multiple shared showers/bathrooms. Even with the communal aspect there is a lot of privacy and all of the other guests I met seemed happy and polite!
The negative reviews are confusing to me as if you read the booking it clearly states what amenities are present in the space. Yes you are on one of the main arteries of Montreal - sounds of city come with it! There is a shared fridge and kettle. Even with my long term stay I made it work just fine. Truly an affordable, well located place to stay after exploring Montreal all day! I would definitely book in here again.
- João Luís (8/5): - Nice to know this hotel.
- Sumeet (10/5): - Amazing stay. The manager, Tammy, was super nice. The building itself has an amazing vibe to it, I felt like I was in a bohemian NY apartment (and being hyperbolic here, but it's connection to Casa made me feel like it was Patti Smith staying at the Chelsea, such a cool venue)
- Nicholas (10/5): - Tammy was so nice. Such a cool place, great location. Stayed 5 nights with 2 kids aged 3 and 5.
- Hiroko (10/5): - The passcode didn’t work at first, but the owner helped me quickly on the phone. Clean and cozy room. Nice location.
- Angela (10/5): - Such a cute, fun place to stay while exploring Montreal. The air conditioning was top notch on some very hot days, and although we heard the music downstairs, it was always stopped by 11 and we didn't think it was that loud. The owner was super friendly and lovely.
- Lisa (8/5): Cozy and charming - Overall we had a good experience. We loved all the quirky artwork everywhere. :) The beds were comfy, we liked the ease of having door codes and no keys to keep track of, and the shared sitting room (once someone pointed it out to us) was super cute and a nice place to write and eat meals in.
It was weird, though, not having someone to check in/out with or ask questions face to face with. For example, we didn’t know there were two more bathrooms down the hall that were better furnished until one of our fellow visitors pointed it them out, we never did figure out where the courtyard or patio were, so we couldn’t use them, and we didn’t know that some people just left their food out in the shared tea area until we almost ate someone else’s breakfast rolls (thinking they were part of the hotel treats along with the tea service). Those are the kinds of things I’d ask a person at the desk about without a thought, but wouldn’t ask an email correspondent who isn’t likely to get back to me right away. It would be helpful if there were a little map or guide to the tiny hotel with that info in it in the room when you come in.
- Laura (10/5): Absolutely my new home away from home in Montreal - Entry instructions were super clear
Room was spacious, clean and quiet
- Wally (10/5): - All boxes checked, nuff said
- Ryan (6/5): - Quick and easy to get to. Walking distance in the heart of Montreal. Street party is rare and dicey. Was side swiped by a few b
- Hans (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shordee (10/5): Exceptional - Super freindly, relaxed check in and check out. Quiet consisering it was above a bar. Comfy bed, great location. The window was a bit loose and rattled a bit, but i am not complaining. It was just something i noticed.
- hanz jeferson (10/5): - it was excellent
- Nicolas (10/5): - Great location on the plteau, right above the Casa del Popolo restaurant. Small cosy clean affordable room for solo traveller.
- Karen (2/5): - The bathroom was disgusting, unclean with hairs all over the floor. I literally sat down on the bed and then got up and left and went somewhere else. I have no words. No reception, no bottle of promised wine, I feel really bad leaving a negative review but there was so many excellent reviews I thought maybe this people be helpful for someone to know just what they were getting into. So sorry!!
- Krishna (6/5): - Good, quite , neat by
- Cori (10/5): Awesome stay - So cute and well made up! Classy. The owners are very friendly and communicative. Check in and out is so easy! They gave us a bottle of wine! And we got 25% off at their restaurant!!! The food was amazing!! It's close to bakeries, a grocery store, and the clubs!! We will be back here soon! Loved it!!
- Todd (10/5): - We had a great overnight stay at this funky place.
- Alexander (10/5): - nice place
- Dybwad (7/5): Good -
- Glendon (5/5): Passable - Staff was relatively accessible by phone, and conveyed a helpful and friendly attitude. The location- sort of. It is in the heart of the “Plateau”- a trendy Montreal neighborhood buzzing with character. But for those unfamiliar with Montreal, you need to know that “Le Plateau” is far removed from downtown (30-40 minute walk to Ste. Catherine). The fact that it was passed off as a normal hotel, when in fact, it was self check-in. This would emerge to be an issue in more ways than one: the entrance code did not work at first, limited/no heat, and parking anxiety. There was no hot water through the first two days, but I noticed it coming through the third day. Because it did not come through the bathroom tap, I lacked confidence to try the shower, so cannot speak to that conclusively.
- Michaela (6/5): - The property is dated but clean. Location is great, lots of parking on the street. The owner was very helpful when we had issues with the codes.
- Jesse (10/5): - Great spot! Lovely manager and super easy check in and out! Only downside I can think of was some of the other guests being noisy coming home from a night out at 3am. But that’s not staffs fault! Great place overall, will definitely be back!!!
- Jacqueline (10/5): - It's a great spot in the middle of a busy bar area. That being said it means it will be a little noisy at night but the mornings are peaceful and quiet. The building is old so even with the heat on, it'll always be a little chilly.
The staff was very helpful when I forgot my phone in my room and couldn't get in and the food is good in the bar
- Adam (10/5): - I always stay at Pensione Popolo when I visit Montreal to see Alanna Sterling in concert.
The hotel is eclectic and fun and is a great place to stay when Alanna Sterling performs at clubs in the area.
Lots of great restaurants and bars within walking distance. The hotel even gives you a discount at the restaurant downstairs which is conveniently open late. No need to order delivery when you can just go downstairs.
The next time Alanna Sterling performs in Montreal, I will definitely stay at Pensione Popolo again.
- Eileen (8/5): - super cute and charming stay!! great price and location with many restaurants and bars within a 15 minute walk. the shared space was so cute and everything was very clean.
Staff were SO nice and accommodating, quick to respond. would definitely recommend for a traveler looking for more eclectic experiences!!!(:
- Assunção (8/5): Great - Cosy, clean, family style There was a booking mix up at the beginning but everything was settled down and the stay was perfect for me
- jabe (10/5): - This was the coolest, funkiest little pensione i've ever stayed in!
- Jacob (10/5): - Wonderful spot in the Plateau. Very accommodating! Be sure to email them :)
- Erin (10/5): - Lovely little hotel conveniently placed above a cute and hip bar/restaurant with vegan options. Reasonable price and great location.
- Stephen (8/5): - It's not fancy but a great option if this is the area in Montreal you're looking to visit. Worked really well for my family of four to catch a concert at the nearby Fairmont Theatre. Clean enough for sure and we felt safe and secure.
- Joshua (10/5): - We loved it!!
- Sara (8/5): - We loved Pensionne Popolo and will be back! It was very convenient to restaurants, all kinds of shopping, music events, and close to the Metro. The room and shared bathrooms were clean and the other guests were quiet and respectful.
- Morgan (8/5): - This is a really fun place to stay. If you are able to carry your bag up four or five flights of stairs. It was a great price and the place has lots of personality!
- Mariana (10/5): - Thank you! Will sure stay again!
- Maddison (6/5): - This hostel-like stay was pretty convenient. We had a private room with our own bathroom but they have multiple bathrooms on the main level for others. The window did not lock which made me a little uneasy. I liked the location of this place. The shopping strip with many restaurants was within walking distance. Casa del Popolo was a decent vegan restaurant with outside seating by the street or back patio that offered live music in the private room for $20. The music from shows is loud in the room and there is no TV but we didn't mind. Overall it was a decent stay and we would stay here again.
- joslin (10/5): - perfect location! will definitely stay here again!
- heather (10/5): - I love this boutique hotel. It’s funky, vintage and eclectic vibe is right up my alley.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This isn’t a hotel and is in an old building in Montreal. There is a bar down stairs so bring earplugs. The best way to get in touch with the staff is to text the number in the information email, and the door code changes right at your check out time so don’t leave and expect to get back in. The stairs are very steep so carrying large things to your room can be a challenge and it is definitely not accessible. Some rooms share a bathroom.
But if you understand and expect all of that, this is the perfect affordable place to stay in a sweet interesting part of the city.
- Deborah (5/5): Convenient location- good for short overnight stay. - No breakfast offerings. Lots of stairs so make sure you don’t have heavy luggage.🧳
- Chip (10/5): - Lovely old walk-up pensione in a great Mile End Neighbourhood. Surprisingly quiet. Best towels, pillows & bed linens ever. Manager always available by text, helpful, friendly.
- Gauthier (8/5): Very good -
