Guest Reviews
- Courtney (8/5): - Let me premise and say that I'm American and I liked this hotel, but my Yucatecan boyfriend did not appreciate it as his taste is more modern. I thought the place was great--I liked the older, historic look with the traditional openness. It rained every day so it was wet throughout but I didn't mind. Overall, the hotel and room were clean. Our room had a balcony overlooking the pool which I saw was cleaned every morning. We had a big room and big bathroom which were nice. Internet was spotty the first couple days on account for rain but we managed. It's located right downtown so lots of walkability to shops and restaurants. Staff was nice. Our only complaint was the parking was a bit of a nightmare. They partner with a lot nearby but the gate was often locked at night so my boyfriend had to make several trips to and from the lot to the hotel to get someone to open the gate. Parking came out to 25 pesos/day. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I chose it.
- Blanca (8/5): - Room location was great, the elevators were a great experience, staff always refilled bathroom supplies, staff was friendly and courteous.

- Rose (8/5): - Beds were excellent, staff super friendly.
Airconditioner could be improved, or perhaps installing fans could help.

Está limpio y localizado en el mero centro.
- Ruth (10/5): - No complaints. Everything was good
- Albert (10/5): - There is a restaurant in the hotel. Staff is attentive and helpful. Old fashioned, in that you have keys to open the door. Drop off and pick up at front desk. ???

- Carlo Magno Flores (8/5): - Hotel Casa del Balam - 3 Stars
I recently stayed at Hotel Casa del Balam during my visit to Merida, Yucatán, and overall, it was a decent experience, though there were some aspects that could use improvement.
First, the location is fantastic. It’s situated right in the heart of the city, making it easy to explore the local attractions, restaurants, and markets on foot. The architecture of the hotel is charming, reflecting the rich history of the region, which added to the overall ambiance.
However, the service was a mixed bag. While some staff members were friendly and helpful, others seemed indifferent and not as attentive as I would have hoped. It felt like there was a lack of consistency in customer service, which detracted from the overall experience.
The room I stayed in was comfortable, but it could use some updates. The furnishings felt a bit dated, and the bathroom amenities were basic. I also noticed that the Wi-Fi connection was spotty at times, which was a bit frustrating when trying to plan my daily activities.
In summary, Hotel Casa del Balam has a lot of potential with its prime location and beautiful architecture, but it falls short in service consistency and room updates. It’s a solid choice for those looking for a convenient place to stay, but there’s definitely room for improvement.
- Dahlia M (8/5): - Staff amable, tuvimos algunos detalles pero lo resolvieron, excelente ubicación. Housekeeping (Sergio) encontrabamos la habitation limpia. Fue super amable 😊
- Lee (10/5): - The staff is lovely, I like the the convenience of Bistrola 57 being on site. I love the antiqueness of the room and the grandness of the center courtyard. It's like staying in someone's home. Any time I come to Mérida, it's my go to hotel.
- blanca (10/5): - Muy buena localización
Muy amplios cuartos
Buena atención
- María (10/5): - Excellent location, clean rooms and excellent service
- Laura Angelica (10/5): - Hotel staff very friendly and helpful
- jennifer (8/5): - This was a great central location. The pool was nice and refreshing. The room had a safe, small fridge and comfortable beds. Some fun charactoristics were the elevator and the tv remote!
- Erma (8/5): - Great location
- Irma V (8/5): - Great location walking distance to restaurants, shopping and city attractions. The only problem at the hotel was the elevators not working at times.
- Sandra (10/5): Casa Balam - Another great stay in Merida - We have been staying at Balam for 5 years now when we have come to Merida. Staff are great, rooms and large and comfortable and the location is perfect. We highly recommend Casa Balam.
- Reynelda Lucile (6/5): - Great location in Merida Centro. Walking distance to
wide selection of restaurants, stores, and historic
plazas.
The hotel has character and architectural appeal but is
in need of some repairs and updating.
My husband and I had booked a premium room with 2
queen beds, but upon arrival were given a small
room with one full bed. We spent an uncomfortable first night but were able to change rooms the next day.
The hotel and restaurant staff were friendly and accomodating.
- Ortencia (10/5): - ZGxzzreat, but amenities are
- Ashley (8/5): - The property was more run down than the photos show on the website. The room was pretty but dirty. One of our rokms didnt have ac, clean towels or a working shower. The staff were nice and the restaurant was very nice and served us by the pool. The hotel is in an excellent location however. Overall we would stay again.
- William (10/5): - Great location, well maintained, friendly staff, great value
- Stacey (10/5): - VIP treatment was much appreciated ❤️
- Ángel (10/5): Merida - It was good, perfect location confy bed
- Carlos Alberto Tellez (10/5): - Great hotel, close to the parks!
- Susan (10/5): - Such a unique setting- our favorite hotel when we are in Mérida
- Verified traveler (8/5): Just okay - Great customer service and location but condition of the room and bathroom was very poor. Cannot control AC temperature asked for a portable fan. Shower head broken water coming out everywhere. Not much toiletries just shampoo and bar soap. No tissue paper, vanity set, no hand or face towel. No safe box, had to carry around a huge wood key chain for room key, bigger than my cross body bag Pictures very nice but not the way the room is.
- ISABEL (4/5): - The towel has a hole
- Jean Luc (4/5): - Arrived at 4:30 pm the room was not ready. When we finally got in the room the last century tv did not work, the fridge was also on its last leg. There were no glasses in the room. One of the lamps had a short, I disconnected it.. let’s forget about the seemingly clean floor until you walked barefoot on it. I would pass on this hotel
- OTHON (8/5): - Great location
- Mark (8/5): - Great location, easy access, nice staff
- MAYNARD (2/5): - Great hotel for historians, one of Merida's oldest hotels. Nice restaurant and pool. Walking distance to a few nice parks and restaurants. Air conditioning was unable to cool off the room, even at high cool setting, which is the main reason for the one star rating. If AC doesn't work, that automatically results in one star. No free off-site parking as described in hotel listing. The only parking option was off-site public parking for MXN 50 pesos. There is no on-site parking available, not even for a fee, contrary to listing details.
- DIEN (10/5): - Nice hotel located at best convenient place at Mérida city. Highly recommendation to all travelers. Excellent services…
- Irene (8/5): - Overall very good and the Penthouse view was amazing
- Jose A (10/5): - Good
- bruce (10/5): - A truly authentic Spanish influence with an amazing staff. The next time we are in Merida we will definitely stay there again.

- LInda (10/5): - A very pleasant renovated older hotel with all the essentials including great charm.
- Anne (8/5): - Great friendly service from most staff. Wonderful central location for tourists.
- Mary (10/5): - Stayed here many times. Location can’t be beat and the price is right.
- Debra (8/5): - The room was very nice. Clean, & all outlets worked. Staff is very responsive, & speaks English. Pool area was lovely. Location was close to restaurants & a little shopping, with coffee shop right across street. Restaurant downstairs was good!
- J.C. (2/5): - Merida was OK, with a lot of things closed randomly. A bigger issue was our room, on a busy road and no soundproofing. It was also dated and a bit rough. This place has little charm except for the staff.
- Michael (10/5): - Wonderful mexican cultural hotel.
- Michael (10/5): - Excellent Mexican style hotel with excellent service and location.
- Ramon (2/5): - No A/C working had to move to another room.
Cold water faucet in shower not working (just drops) was reported every day and nothing done.
- Debra (4/5): - Staff were very nice & spoke English. Common areas were nice. Restaurant downstairs was good. Outlets in bathroom did not work.
- Jose Angel (6/5): - no reviews
- Tracy (10/5): - Loved Merida and our stay at this charming hotel with friendly staff.
- Ortencia (10/5): - What is the best of a hotel? Location, location, location, and customer service. Casa del Balam has a great location, friendly staff, easy access to public transportation and taxis, walkable location to historic centro, restaurants in walking distance, it is dated, but very clean.
- ALLEGRA (10/5): - I adored this hotel. The staff was wonderful, property located centrally and close to everything, beautiful pool and lovely rooms. Will return!
- Mary (8/5): - This is a charming colonial hotel located in Centro/St Lucia. We also stayed here in 2023. The staff was responsive when we communicated via WhatsApp both before and during our stay. After 3 days of great pressure and hot water, there was no hot water for a day, but these things happen in old historic buildings. Bathroom updates are needed and housekeeping could be a bit more thorough, but we like the place for a few nights’ stay. Recommended.
- JAVIER (10/5): - Colonial building, furniture and decorations. Restaurant's prices were higher than others surrounding the property. A discount for guests could invite us to eat there.
- JAVIER (10/5): - Excellent to stay in the heart of Merida.
- Dolores (6/5): - Staff very helpful and friendly, the hotel is very nice and convenient.
No complaints only suggestions.
Need new towels, darkened curtains and air conditioning.
Thank you, we enjoyed our stay.😊
- Anthony (10/5): - Very charming Hotel. Clean, comfortable rooms. Friendly staff. I had a very pleasant stay here and I will be coming back on my next trip to Mèrida. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Silvia (6/5): - The area was perfect
That’s it
- Isis Natalia (6/5): - Excellent location. The patio and pool areas are very nice. The rooms need an upgrade, particularly the bathrooms and closets. The staff is very helpful. It is not a 4 star hotel as listed, but it's convenient.
- Christine (10/5): - Gorgeous hotel, vintage, unique, comfortable. Shower was abismal but what can you expect from a century old building. It was perfect!
- ROBERT (10/5): - The priming room was amazing with the balcony. The room was just as posted. The staff were very courteous. The restaurant in/attached to the hotel served excellent food and the staff in both spoke English. The cleaning staff was very thorough. The grounds were well kept. We would definitely stay here again.
- ROBERT (10/5): - Very nice accommodations, excellent services. Great location. Would not hesitate to return.
- David (8/5): Good for the price - Old school. The tv is old and does not work well. But the place is nice
The parking lot is near
- Damon (10/5): - The property is beautiful with a great courtyard. They had a guitar player in the mornings, which added to the ambiance. The pool is very nice and well-maintained, with many thoughtful touches throughout the hotel. Although it is an older hotel, it is impeccably cared for. The rooms and beds are comfortable, and the staff is super helpful. The location is perfect, situated on Calle 60 between La Plaza Grande and Parque Santa Lucia. Despite being on a busy street, we couldn't hear the city noise at night. Overall, it was a great experience.
- Anthony (6/5): - The stay was ok. Room was clean but no Wi-Fi access, other than in the Lobby area.
- Terryl (10/5): - Great location, old world charm
- Frederic (6/5): Could be better - Minimum comfort in this very old hotel. The AC is noisy and not efficient at all. Wifi is only accessible in the lobby. Building needs maintenance.
We also had a surprise regarding the laundry fees, they announced around 250 pesos, we had to pay 600 pesos (2.5 times more). Hot water was not available the first day. Curtains are not dark enough, so it wakes you up when the sun rises.
Location is great though, right downtown Merida.
- EUGENIA (4/5): - We did not have hoy water for 2 days, refrigerador do not work, they made the bed with the sheet at the top and blanket under. We had to wait a lot for them to bring a security box, the person did not know how to opérate it.
- MAURA (2/5): - .
- Martin (10/5): - Casa del Balam is our “go to” hotel in Merida because of its perfect location near the outstanding Plaza Grande with all its restaurants, shops and cultural events. We love the historic charm of the hotel, its pool area and its restaurant.
- Erika (2/5): - El aire acondicionado no servia me pasaron a otro cuarto y tampoco servía no pudimos dormir muy mala experiencia
- Sharon (10/5): - It's still a beautiful place. I've been coming there many years.
- Ortencia (10/5): - Location, location, location. Very convenient to historic centro Merida. Merida is a walkable city. Love the location.
- Miguel (10/5): - Upon arrival i was told that the air conditioning was not working in my room so they offered to place me in one of there sister hotels which turned out to be a really good and clean hotel and continued my stay there even though I was given the option to return to Casa De Balam.
- Irma (10/5): - Hotel is tropical and I loved it!
- Mauro (10/5): A/C isn’t the best. - We went first week of Sept. weather was 90s and very humid. We weren’t able lower the temp in our room. It’s already preset, you’re only able to adjust the fan speed.
- Benjamin (4/5): - Air conditioning was broken with temperatures over 100 degrees. Baby couldn’t sleep, I had to go sleep by pool cause I couldn’t breath in the heat. Nice staff but the building and rooms need a lot of work.
- María (10/5): - We had loved it! So many things within walking distance and amazing restaurants!
- Arturo (8/5): - It was in the heart of historic center. Very friendly staff.
- JOSE (4/5): - no comments to many bad to comments
AC leaking nobody fixed
shower curtains ripped
sink clogged for 2 days
no tv for the first 3 days
bad attitudes front desk
restaurant too
etc. etc. etc
- Steven (10/5): - The staff were at the top of the customer service game, very helpful, very kind.
Don’t forget the Bistro 57 downstairs, great food and wonderful Cubra Libres.
- Martha Elba Gonzalez (6/5): - No recibi mi habitacion doble deluxe que fue la pagada por internet. Pese a que hable un dia antes para confirmar mi reaervacion. Pero la asignada funciono.
- Edgar (8/5): - To hot the room
- Alicia A (6/5): Mérida trip - The hotel is nice very simple
- Alba (10/5): - Nice old place. Comfortable in a great location. Is not crowded
- Milton (6/5): - This is an historic type hotel nothing modern so not a place if you’re have high expectations for warm water or toilets that flush well or an elevator that may or may not work
- Chloe (10/5): - One of the only places that had a/c during a tropical storm. Lovely accommodating staff. And a back up generator in case the storm got worse. It was perfect because they have a restaurant inside and all every store were close for the hurricane so we were able to eat and at other hotels. We weren’t going to come here at first but our first hotel wasn’t going to have services or
- Abel (8/5): - Casa del Balam is a great little hotel with good shopping and dining near by. The staff is friendly and parking is included should you rent a car. The restaurant downstairs has live entertainment and good food. Walking distance from several plazas and museums.
- Gustavo (10/5): - Me encanta todo el diseño del hotel, los cuartos la alberca los spacios comunes.
- Gustavo (10/5): - El diseño.
