- Paul (9/5): Beautiful location and fantastic cuisine from the restaurant - Great location Room 14 being overlooked .. maybe put lace curtains up
- Lynne (3/5): Disappointing management - Comfortable. Over priced restaurant.
Unable to get an invoice for my stay despite several requests and promises to email it to me - major issue when you need to reclaim on expenses!

- B9945HZalisonb (10/5): Book our wedding - We went to whitley hall hotel to book our wedding date, Laura was excellent, she gave us all the information we needed explained everything clearly, hence we booked there and then.
Can't wait for our special day to arrive
- Adrian (10/5): Lovely staff, comfortable and tasty food - Comfortable and friendly atmosphere Couldn’t be helped due to the age of the property (17th Century) but was a little bit difficult to navigate around for some of our (of a certain age) family.
- Skeltonvibes (10/5): Spot on as usual - Perfect experience, good service, food, accomodation and atmosphere.
Would certainly recommend it.
- MeganSym (10/5): Amazing wedding meeting - We had our final wedding meeting last week before we get married in May, the whole process has been supported with all the staff answering any questions and emails I’ve sent, Marie put us at ease with the final meeting to make sure we covered everything needed, can’t wait to get married at this beautiful venue

- davidkA2462TT (10/5): Thirty Years of Dinning at Whitley Hall - We have been going to dine at Whitley Hall for over 30 years, in that time we have seen many changes. However, one thing never changes good food, great atmosphere, helpful staff, and we have never felt rushed - no matter how long we sit in the lounge after dinner.
- lornas551 (10/5): Beautiful hotel and grounds - We visited Whitley Hall Hotel as a potential wedding venue. The location is easy to get to and we were immediately impressed by how beautiful the hotel and grounds are.
The appointment was informative and we were provided with plenty of information about what is available and the pricing without being overwhelmed. We also appreciated that we were given time to look over the brochure together and then given the opportunity to go away and consider our options without any pressure to make an immediate decision. Following this appointment, I reached out with a couple of other questions and received a reply quickly and addressed everything I wanted to know.
As I result, I have just contacted the venue to go forward with booking it for our upcoming wedding!

Food delicious
- Rachel_W4TSON (10/5): We will be back! - Another fabulous stay at Whitley Hall! The food is always beautiful and perfectly cooked, we have eaten here a lot and it never fails to please! This time we stayed over on the Romantic Break Plus and had a great night with divine food and excellent wine. The Port left in the room for us is a lovely touch and gratefully received. The staff are excellent throughout the hotel, friendly, professional really attentive and nothing is too much trouble, overall a wonderful stay and we will be returning!
- Ian (9/5): Lovely old Manor House, friendly staff, quality dinner and breakfast served. - Old world charm and attentive staff Fire alarm going off at 5 am.
- mandysZ1216SY (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing place. Been going to Whitley Hall on a regular basis since our marriage over 4 years ago. Whether it be for a meal with family or overnight stays with my husband. The service is always 100 percent and all staff are very friendly, welcoming and attentive, ensuring you have a great experience.
The organisation and cleanliness is exceptional. The food is delicious and very creative with well put together flavours and menus. My favourite happy place. Well done to all at Whitley Hall, you certainly provide the best customer service.
- Robbie22124 (10/5): Totally enjoyable. - Whitley Hall Hotel is a big favorite of ours where we enjoy both lunch for us as a couple and also a lovely Sunday lunch with our family.
The atmosphere and quality of food are really good. Service is second to none. I totally recommend Whitley Hall.
- R4762UWsandys (6/5): What a shame.... - Standard small room, nothing exceptional. Clean bedding, welcome glass of port.
No natural ventilation. Tea/ coffee tray POOR- 1 pack of biscuits, very limited coffee, milk etc... Had to go down to the Reception to aquire supplies !! Water left in the kettle.
Dinner over priced, steak hard to cut and digest. shame considering we are local .
- rogereS3298BR (10/5): Great place for a special lunch - Our first time at WHITLEY HALL hotel in Sheffield where we called in for lunch. A beautiful house set amongst lovely gardens and the lunch was excellent.
Well worth a visit and we would highly recommend.

- catherinecH1275HZ (10/5): The best, so happy with our stay. - Oh, words don't do it justice. Beyond charming, PHENOMENAL food, and staff/ service. So grateful for the opportunity to stay there. Its history, its location. The locals that frequent it. Just superb.
- G3558CZpaulm (10/5): What a lovely lunch - We went for a weekday lunch. The restaurant was lovely, the food was delicious and the staff could not have been more attentive. First class.
- nickgC573CE (10/5): A Hidden Gem - Last-minute booking for us to stay overnight whilst visiting a relative in The Northern General.
Whitley is an absolute gem, nestled in a quiet valley less than 10 mins from J35 of the M1.
The staff were absolutely marvellous. From a complimentary glass of port in our well-appointed room on arrival, to pre-dinner cocktails in the lounge, the staff are always attentive and pleased to see you.
The restaurant staff take your order in the lounge before taking you through for dinner, where your chilled wine already awaits you at table.
We were sated after our mains but tempted by the excellent (and generously portioned) cheeseboard. Chef and the whole kitchen team well-deserving of praise.
After a long day travelling we retired to our very comfy bed and slept like little lambs - only noticing the beautiful Lamb carving above the door to the bar just before departure - right next to The Priestˋs Hole!
A really lovely hotel with lovely staff and we are looking forward to a longer stay in the near future.

- MikeF2391 (10/5): Beautiful food in a beautiful location - Booked for Valentine’s Day and pleased to see that they don’t cram people in on special occasions.
Beautiful location and the decor is in keeping with the buildings age. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the dining room.
Excellent food served by friendly efficient staff. The belly pork was the best we have both tasted.
Highly recommend
- kn0bbyearth (10/5): Last minute booking - My wife and I were booked into the restaurant for a valentines meal.
The hotel was fully booked but a cancellation became available during the afternoon so we decided to book.
The hotel met all our expectations. The staff were warm and friendly and although there was a wedding service was not compromised.
There was complimentary port in the room which was a nice touch.
The bar was intimate and cosy with a real fire.
The food and service in the restaurant was first class.
Overall a wonderful stay.
- kevinwC8321BG (10/5): Hidden Gem - fantastic hotel in a wonderful setting. Restaurant excellent, great service with amazing food. Little touches throughout show thought has gone into making it a memorable experience. Highly recommend and looking forward to my next visit.
- Z4058IXkarenw (10/5): Fantastic hotel! - Lovely historical hotel,
an oasis in the countryside but near main motorways and attractions. Excellent service from the staff and a very enjoyable dinner and breakfast in the restaurant. Our third visit and hopefully will return in the future.
- Acorn87 (10/5): Black Friday romantic night - Absolutely loved our stay. We booked the romantic night stay ( Black Friday deal). The staff are so helpful & Friendly. Expect one young man behind the bar. Never spoke when serving. Didn’t wipe the bottom off glasses when tipped some out. But that didn’t bother us. It’s amazing place and definitely be back. Little expensive. But the food is amazing .such a quiet location. Love the history of the hotel. Just note no hand soap in your bathroom. Take my own so ok.
- O4907AKscottp (10/5): Yet another amazing stay! - We have stayed at this hotel numerous times over numerous years. It is in a beautiful countryside location, even though it is a 10 minute drive from Meadowhall and the M1.
The staff are always very friendly and professional. The rooms are individual and very comfortable.
The restaurant serves delicious food and a great breakfast. It is always a treat to stay.
- kazs307 (10/5): A Christmas to remember! - Christmas Eve to 27th December 2025
This was our first stay at Whitley Hall and understandably, despite reading existing reviews prior to booking, there was a degree of anxiety regarding personal expectation for our Christmas 3 night break.
At time of booking in July, we were reassured by the booking process which was well organised, easy to navigate and the communication was great and subsequently, remained excellent throughout. I was even able to make enquiries via email at the last minute and this was handled promptly and efficiently.
Christmas Eve check-in at 2pm was our initial interaction with reception staff, where the process was swift and informative despite being predictably busy, but we were instantly made to feel welcome. We then went for afternoon tea, which offered a good selection of both savoury and sweet treats with portion size more than adequate for the two of us.
We had booked a luxury room, which was ready at 3pm as stated, and we were allocated room 40. The room was beautifully decorated, full of character, immaculately clean, warm and cosy, it also afforded us a view of the lake. It had everything to make our stay enjoyable, in addition were complimentary mince pies and a small bottle of port which was a very nice touch from the Hotel.
All our meals (with the exception of Christmas morning breakfast which was delivered to our room by a couple of Santa's Elves) were in the Restaurant 1584 which is tastefully decorated. The food was exceptional, delicious and beautifully presented, it's clear to see the Chefs have a passion for food, we just couldn't fault anything. Service was excellent too and although staff were very busy, nothing seemed to be too much trouble, it was obvious, that every effort was being made to make our experience special.
From the moment we stepped into this fabulous hotel with beautiful surroundings, the whole experience was outstanding. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was warm and festive with open fires in several areas of the hotel. The Christmas decorations were impressive throughout the hotel including a large wreath attached to the main gates upon our arrival which was a very lovely touch.
Joe Ciara and all the staff, irrelevant of role and what time of day, whoever we came across, they all appeared happy in their work. They were approachable, competent and there was a clear willingness to help at every opportunity and they all engaged in a friendly way whilst maintaining professionalism. Their prominent smiles gave such a warm positive first impression and was so welcoming throughout our stay, it's a credit to you all.
Overall Whitley Hall delivered a truly wonderful Christmas stay and dining experience - it was just perfect. It made such an impression, we have decided to return with family for Christmas 2026!
- C57TOlindas (10/5): Hospitality at its very best - Whitley hall is an amazing place to stay and provides a truly memorable experience. 1584 restaurant should definitely be visited. It’s clear to see the chefs have a passion for food and this shows in the amazing dishes they create. This is a beautiful welcoming Hotel set in wonderful grounds. Our room was very comfortable and had everything to make our stay enjoyable. All the staff we came across during our stay showed great professionalism while being friendly and attentive to our needs. Would definitely recommend a visit and we will definitely be returning.
- Voyage12704090445 (8/5): Beautiful place just don’t get room service - This is a beautiful old building with creaky floors and classic British style. The room was cosy and had everything you’d expect, including a big bath tub. There is some complimentary port too, a nice touch. I was on my own so wanted room service. The only negative thing I have to say is that the tray charge was £10. I queried this when I left and the receptionist waived the charge. I think £5 is reasonable but £10 is a lot! Breakfast options were excellent. This was a business stay and I’d love to stay again for leisure.

- Go41359933754 (10/5): Afternoon tea - Beautiful hotel in lovely setting. Real fire making a cosy atmosphere. A range of different savouries on the afternoon tea which was all stunning. One of the best we have had, well done.
- Zoe (10/5): -
- FrequentFlier616351 (10/5): Can’t recommend highly enough - Love coming to Whitley Hall. The food is always gorgeous and beautifully presented. The staff are so attentive and are a credit to the hotel. We had a lunch to celebrate a friend’s birthday and it was made extra special with a special dessert for her which was a lovely touch. I will be back and it was my friend’s first time and she is already looking to book her next visit. Highly recommend
- Jon007 (8/5): A great venue for a special meal - First time here, for evening meal. Excellent venue, albeit slightly difficult to find in the dark. Greeted on arrival and ushered into bar so that allegedly we could peruse menus and have a drink, have some bar snacks. Took half an hour before we actually ordered, so this was maybe just a clever way to get us to spend money at the bar in advance of our meal! Limited cocktail menu but generally very pleasant in the snug. Had two meals in very tastefully decorated restaurant, which were generally quite pleasant, one more so than the other. Staff were all very attentive and helpful, Joe especially, and the price was quite competitive - the 3-course evening meal at £30 is especially good value. At last a venue where the background music is just that - background! A place to return to.
- Duncan (8/5): Lovely place, great breakfast, needed more to time - The history and unique feel. We loved the decor and feeling of the place The member of staff that took our meal order never clearly explained everything which led to us over ordering more side dishes than was needed, due to the same being within the meal already.
- Mike (8/5): OK but toilet maintenance must improve. Make the plumber use it, in the dark! - Fine Gents toilet light delay far too short. Light on/off controlled by door to corridor. No emergency lighting. Flush fill inadequate. The rest you can guess. A total disaster! I told the receptionist nearest toilet that the plumber had a sense of humour, which was not welcome.
- Monica (7/5): We enjoyed the stay - Bed too hard. Food was good, Cups in the rooms too small and at breakfast The cups for drinks too small
- slg_sarah (2/5): A very poor experience after 50+ years of custom - We booked a Junior Suite for 1 night. After having driven from our home in West Cornwall, a journey of 380 miles, we were looking forward to checking into our room and then having a relaxing evening with a couple of drinks in the bar before settling down for an early night. Whitley Hall is a place we hold very dear to us after many family occasions there before we moved away from the area.
On our arrival just after 6pm we were given a key to our room and directions. I noticed straight away how cold the room was, my husband checked the radiators and realised both had been turned off. He turned them on and I called down to reception to request a plug in heater whilst the room warmed up. One very small heater was reluctantly brought to us as it was the reception team's heater. This showed as it was very dirty and covered in spilt drinks. After waiting the requested time of 30 minutes for the room to warm through I once again called reception as no heat was coming into the radiators. A small oil filled radiator was proving inadequate for a room of the size of the Junior Suite and I was getting colder and colder.
It was agreed that a room change was going to be the only solution, and I realised this was going to be quite difficult for me to undertake as I was already exhausted. I have walking difficulties due to osteoarthritis and I use a stick, I was assured there weren't any more stairs. This was NOT the case as I counted 6. The room offered was a fairly bog standard room with no seating other than the bed and no bath. Surely staff members are trained to make room downgrades apparent to guests beforehand, not after? Once again I called reception, I was told rather abruptly by Joe that I would need to compromise on the bathroom or the bed as there weren't any other rooms available.
I checked availability myself on the internet and I could see amongst others there was a four poster room available and the Peacock Suite. I was somewhat disappointed to say the least not to have been offered either of these in the first instance. Having now been in the hotel for over 2 hours I was in desperate need of resting and my husband was looking forward to a soak in the bath. So yet another call was made to reception, and somewhat reluctantly Joe agreed on a further room change. We were given yet another key and directed (not escorted as I would have expected in view of the previous 2 rooms being unsuitable) to a four poster bedroom on the 1st floor of the Parker Wing, the opposite side to where we now were but very close to our first room. On entering this room, it too was freezing cold, the Juliet balcony doors were wide open as were the bathroom and bedroom windows and the heating was turned off. My husband closed the doors and windows and turned on the radiators, fortunately the heating wasn't broken, just turned off. By 10pm we were just starting to get warm.
This room we later discovered needed a very thorough deep clean, the bedside lamps were covered in dust, the paintings had cobwebs and the top of the bed hasn't been dusted in years. The dust motes brought on an allergic sneezing reaction in both of us once the room had warmed up.
The relaxing evening we had planned of having drinks in the bar and reminiscing about happy visits in the past was not going to happen now.
I wrote to the Operations Manager to complain about the shocking lack of customer service on the night in question and the lack of cleanliness in the room that we ended up staying in. It turned out the receptionist called Joe we had been dealing with on the night was actually the operations manager of Whitley Hall, not a fairly new and inexperienced receptionist still learning the layout of the rooms like we had wrongly assumed due to his lack of knowledge of the building and the location of stairs. This was quite a surprise as he hadn't demonstrated any managerial experience, can do attitude or expertise when handling the situation we found ourselves in.
In response to my complaint I received a reply from him advising me of what steps they were now putting in place to ensure the cleanliness issue doesn't happen again and that the heating was now fixed in the Junior Suite. This is just paying lip service and of no consequence to us, own the problem and either put things right for the customer or apologise profusely and offer compensation. The offer of a complimentary upgrade should we decide to return is not going to entice us back that is for certain. The email also stated “Regarding your mention of potentially posting your experience on Tripadvisor, you are of course free to share your feedback publicly. Should you choose to do so, we will ensure that any response from the hotel is fair, balanced, and reflective of the steps taken on the night to support you to the best of our ability.”
Oh my word, there is no hope for the place if they feel veiled threats are appropriate towards regular customers who have visited the hotel and restaurant for over 50 years! I can't believe a member of the management team would actually write this or are they cutting corners and using AI ChatGPT to write their replies?
The steps taken on the night to support us were practically non-existent. Not even an offer to assist with our baggage. I also wish to point out that it was my own tenacity that found us a suitable room, not the steps of the operations manager.
I first visited Whitley Hall the year it opened as a restaurant in 1969 aged 5 and it saddens me that after our recent experience we certainly won't be returning under the current management team. I rarely complain or give negative TripAdvisor reviews but in this instance it is completely justified after the response I was sent.
One comment that was rather interesting to hear when chatting with the waiting staff at breakfast the following morning about the bed in the four poster bedroom. Apparently it's a particular favourite room for the manager to stay in when he is on night duty. One has to question if this is why we weren't offered this room in the first instance!
- B3564DLkellyb (6/5): Nice hotel and rooms, variable food quality and availability. - Stayed here for 2 nights on dinner, bed and breakfast. Nice hotel with clean rooms, and helpful staff. Only bar food was available on the first night because the restaurant was closed- poor quality and small portion of undercooked cannelloni. The restaurant was opened for dinner on the second night, which was lovely. Breakfast this morning was great. Telephoned by reception at 2130 tonight to say the only time breakfast is available tomorrow is 0645, despite booking a time during check in.
- dadj12 (10/5): Perfect Sunday Lunch for a group of 22 - We had a large family gathering to celebrate a 60th birthday, we were given the parker room to ourselves which was perfect. There were 5 small children in our party and the room enabled them to get down on the floor to play rather than be sat at the table for a long lunch. The staff were amazing, the food was fabulous and the venue was perfect. We will be booking again in the future - Thank you
- C4512KUmarkl (10/5): Celebrating our anniversary - We had our fabulous wedding here in 2022 and try and return every year on our anniversary with the hotels amazing romantic package.
This has bubbly in the room waiting, an afternoon sweet treat tray, a beautiful evening meal and of course their brilliant breakfast.
The grounds are beautiful although we do miss the peacocks that were an important part at our wedding, hopefully they will get some more back
The staff from start to finish are fantastic, very attentive, happy and make you feel at home, this is one of the treasures at this hotel.
Definitely worth a visit
- Diane (10/5): Perfect - The decor. The comfort
The staff Nothing
- Travel19800588093 (10/5): Awesome stay. - 2 night Stay for wedding anniversary.
The hotel was busy with 3 or 4 weddings and other events, not that it had an impact on our stay. The only reason we knew was because of the signposts to the different events…The whole hotel was otherwise as peaceful, quiet and relaxing as it ever has been. It didn’t feel busy at all.
The staff were extremely helpful, efficient and looked to enjoy what they did…they were polite wherever we saw them, from reception, housekeeping, restaurant or bar.
The food was excellent!
The ambience was friendly and warm, the rooms were just lovely and charming - full of character and we will go back without a shadow of a doubt!!
- yvonnesT7832MQ (10/5): What a delight! - New years day lunch. Absolutely brilliant, such an array of choice, lovely friendly staff. Beautiful surroundings from the lights on the trees outside to the festive decor inside. We had drinks in the lounge surrounded by the warmth and glow of the real fire. The whole experience was delightful from start to finish. A wonderful end to our family festivities. We will definitely be back. Great value for money.
- I947TTmandyr (10/5): Perfect Christmas stay - Stayed here from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day. From the second we stepped inside until the moment we left everything was just outstanding, if you are thinking about going please do it because you won’t regret it one bit. I can honestly say our stay was worth every single penny paid. The atmosphere, the staff, the food everything was just perfect, can’t give it enough stars. Thank you to each and everyone there that made our Christmas just perfect! ❤️
- Mighty-Imps99 (10/5): Amazing New Years Eve Gala Dinner and two night stay. Thoroughly recommend the hotel and the gala dinner. - Had two night New Years Eve package. We stayed 30th and 31st, and met some friends for the Black Tie Gala Dinner. Dinner was scrumptious and served in the dining room before allocated tables for the singers and disco. Great evening, good company and everybody stayed to celebrate into the New Year. Would highly recommend. Joe and Liv (bar and serving staff) are great hosts and went beyond the usual standards of service to make our stay very memorable.
- mepsh2025 (10/5): A Wonderful Christmas Dinner at Whitley Hall Hotel. - We went to Whitley Hall Hotel for Christmas dinner, and it was a truly lovely experience from start to finish. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and very attentive without being overbearing, which made the whole afternoon feel relaxed and special.
The atmosphere throughout the hotel was warm and festive, and the surroundings are beautiful the food was delicious and well presented, clearly prepared with care.
We also enjoyed a drink in the bar/snug area both before and after our meal, which was cosy and inviting with an open fire.
Loved the large Christmas wreath on the gate on our arrive, a lovely touch.
Overall, Whitley Hall Hotel delivered a wonderful Christmas dining experience, combining excellent service, great food, and a charming setting. We would happily return and would highly recommend it for special occasions.
- Safari41815779257 (10/5): Hidden Gem - What a fantastic place this is. The staff were welcoming, courteous and attentive with a friendly face. The setting is stunning, oozing with historical character and run like a well-oiled machine. We will definitely be back.
- davepX1248VJ (10/5): Wedding 29 December 2025. - Went to a Wedding on 29th December 2025 and the staff were FANTASTIC. Nothing was any bother. We were late to breakfast and they accommodated us without any fuss, they also let us check out a little bit later. Highly recommend this place. We will be back.
- Trail10230779919 (2/5): Breach of contract & unfair terms - From start to finish there were huge red flags with Whitley Hall. We booked on a last minute deal for our wedding, the original meeting went well and we were under the impression that they were very accommodating, however this was not the case at all. The first issue was we paid the deposit for the wedding then received T&Cs 3 days later with some very dubious terms, including all paid amounts being non-refundable. As an example, they state that if guests consume food/drinks brought in (even in the rooms) there will be a penalty for the couple to pay, and they may shut down the event with no notice or refund given.
When we booked we viewed both suites for the wedding and was assured that we could have as many rooms as needed as we had guests coming from overseas, then changed their minds and said on the second meeting that there were only 14 rooms available - nowhere near enough for our guests, even though T&Cs state we must book at least 17 rooms and we wanted to book 25+. They're also seemingly allowed to change whatever they want in the contract with no consequences to them - they'll keep all the money you've paid and even chase for more. They even threatened us with a 75% of loss of potential revenue which would have added an extra £3000+ to our cancellation fee, despite T&Cs stating that it would be 75% of the booking cost only.
The staff started off very pleasant but when we began to be more instructive in our requirements for the wedding, our wedding coordinator asked why we were even getting married. It was a very unprofessional second meeting and significantly contributed to our cancellation.
It's overall been a terrible experience and I don't doubt that this argument will go on beyond what should have been our wedding date.
- LivetodiveCF (4/5): Disappointing - After reading the reviews I thought my visit at £175 per room was going to be a special wedding treat. Arrived at 2.15 for 3.00 pm wedding, was told we should have left the suitcase in the car, as per instructions on the confirmation email (4 months earlier) and if we wanted to book in before 3 pm there would be an extra charge and, no, said the rude receptionist, there wasn’t a luggage room to store the bags in. Ceremony room: too few seats, some mis-matched chairs found for unseated guests. Couldn’t see the ceremony because of a large pillar. Room was nice. Meal was good but no gluten free bread was offered. Cooked breakfast was a compulsory 9.00 am which made getting to the airport quite tight. Continental breakfast was available earlier. No gluten free options again. I didn’t ask, really a quality hotel at this price should automatically offer this. Fruit salad was 90% apple. Cooked breakfast was hot and fresh, although only fried eggs were offered. I felt everything was being done on the tightest budget possible. With the exception of one very helpful man on reception I felt the staff were neither friendly or guest oriented. The whole experience was ok but for the price was not value for money.
- W4499AHyvonnek (10/5): A One Night Stand to be repeated. - A lovely one night stay at the Whitley Hall Hotel. The hotel was beautifully decorated for the festive season, staff very friendly and attentive, food very good and our room very nice and comfortable. A couple of small issues with the en suite which were brought to the attention of the Receptionist. An added bonus in our room was the miniature decanter of port which we both enjoyed and was also complimentary. The Priests Hole Bar very cosy and as the name implies, a link to the history of the hotel. We shall certainly return and would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about dining/staying there.

- Kate (10/5): Great! - Very friendly staff me comfortable room
- MatthewManchester (6/5): Charming, historic, beautiful but lacking, the restaurant redeemed the experience. - I have been visiting Whitley Hall to eat at the restaurant for special occasions every now and again for forty years. In that time the restaurant has had very good periods and times that were less good however I have never had a bad meal there. I have never stayed there however so when an opportunity came up to do that for a family event I booked 3 cosy doubles in the old part of the property.
The rooms are charming, appropriately furnished and at first glance very nice. However closer inspection reveals several flaws and lack of basic amenities. There is no information in the rooms at all, or instructions into how to access a directory online. I did find a QR code which only took me to the main website. No idea if any room service was offered, I wanted to purchase drinks (there was no bottled water in the room) but how?
The tv remote was eventually found on a shelf away from the tv. I was trying to work out if the phone which was next to the tv was also the remote.
Throwing off the plethora of decor pillows from the bed reveals that the linen was average. Mattress flat, pillows saggy.
Bathroom cleaning was poor. Dirty grout and when I picked up the rolled up (plastic) bathmat it left a black ring on the side of the bath. There was mould on the mat. The rooms are charming with very old draughty windows but had been left unheated for my arrival on a November day. You have to work out for yourself that old style twiddling the valves on the radiator and heated towel rail will bring warmth.
Dinner was absolutely lovely. My party all agreed it was delicious and excellent value. The young team serving us were all efficient and delightful. We were very impressed. However we were puzzled as to why we were required to arrive for dinner 30 minutes ahead of our booked time. It wasn’t a request either, we were instructed to do this. No idea what happens if you rebel.
Similarly for breakfast we had to give reception the time we wished to eat. Why? I want my breakfast when I feel like it, not at a time stated the day before.
I can only imagine that this is because they are operating on the barest minimum of staffing and have to know demand ahead of time. Sorry, but this is cheap.
Finally… the noise. Not from other guests but from the hotel’s own bar and restaurant which bled into my room (10) persistently from check in at 3.30pm until it eventually stopped at 11pm. Not just music but the relentless throb throb throb of a certain style of music that I could hear even over the tv. I’m sure this doesn’t impact all rooms but nevertheless is unacceptable. It was intrusive whilst in the bar and restaurant too.
All in all, beautiful historic building, would I continue to eat there? Yes! Stay? Absolutely not.
- Gaynor (10/5): Will be going back. - Stunning building and the staff were amazing.
- Julia (10/5): Beautiful and comfortable: felt like a countryside retreat, just outside Sheffield - Beautiful hotel with stunning reception rooms and bedroom. Fantastic dinner and breakfast. I’d definitely recommend.

- Tim (10/5): Great location, lovely building, friendly staff, tasty food and a superb night's sleep! - Really comfy night's sleep.
Breakfast was amazing - the haddock and eggs - lovely.
We came back for sunday lunch with family - again, really lovely! Nothing
- Marcus (7/5): Total neutral I found less accommodating for an event than I would of a normal stay - Stunning and do a great wedding venue The abundant non flexibility of checking in. I arrived 11:00 to attend wedding could t get in room until 1500. Went to reception 1455 heard my room was ready but would not allow me to check in for 5 mins. I found that shocking especially as other were around also
- David (9/5): -
- Jennifer (8/5): - Clean and comfy with pleasant staff. Room was a bit hot. Furniture and bathroom fittings were a bit shabby.
- ElaineW436 (2/5): Comedy of Errors. Expensive evening to train the restaurant staff! - When we have been to the restaurant before everything has been how you would expect from a quality establishment, but on on our recent visit everything was very far from perfect. I describe it as a "Comedy of Errors "!
On arrival we were directed to sit in the lounge where the log fire was burning. A young lady brought the menus and a while later took our drinks orders. We were well on with our drinks when our food order was taken, though a group of four who arrived after us had their order taken much more quickly. Our reservation was for 7.30pm and we were told to arrive at 7pm which we did, however it was 7.45 before we went taken to our table. I thought someone would have offered to take my coat which I asked about as we went to the table and was told there was a coat stand behind the table. The young male waiter hung it for me , but I wished I had done it myself While we saw down our white wine was protruding from the chiller it was supposed to be inside, because the chiller was more than half full of ice. We have an identical chicken at his and the whole poisonous of that design is that it needs not ice. My husband summoned the waiter who had no idea what we we were upon about so fetched the manager. My husband spoke to the lady back in the lounge and the wine was then removed and brought back with less ice so at least the remaining wine was inside the chiller.
The real fun came with our main courses. A young male waiter arrived with two plates of food and asked who was having John Dory? My husband had chosen the fish and so I indicated to the waiter that that was the case. The waiter then gave our friend her steak with peppercorn sauce and me my venison with roasted root vegetables. He then said that the John Dory was on its way. I looked at my plate and it was clearly fish! John Dory then placed in front of my husband was actually steak in peppercorn sauce! We said to him that he needed to switch the plates, but he was adamant that he was correct so my husband asked for the menus so that we could make our point by the accompaniments with each dish. The young lady then appeared again and finally the dishes were swapped. Not one had been put in the correct position! By this time things were getting a little cool on the plate. Again the food was good, but not exceptional for the price.
Then deserts. I ordered cheese and biscuits, our friend had the hot pudding of the day and my husband baked alaska. My cheese arrived with a huge amount of butter and four different cheeses that were all more chilled than cheese should be when served. Our friend had the peach pudding with custard which looked like a school dessert to me. My husband’s baked alaska was a torched meringue rather than the traditional one. I looked at my plate and thought "no biscuits "! It had actually been the manager who had brought our desserts so we then had to try and attract someone’s attention to ask about the lack of biscuits which went then brought.
Normally, I would have had coffee, but decided against it after the evening we had had. We then struggled to get a bill. My husband went to the front desk to pay and explained he was not paying the service charge. The lady at the desk could not understand his disappointment and kept saying had he read all the five star reviews the restaurant received? She seemed to find it hard to accept that anything could be unacceptable.
We can only hope that they at the restaurant learn from our evening as we have a table reserved in early December with other friends which we are considering cancelling.
Anyway, we waited another 10 minutes before the starters arrived, when was good, but now outstanding.
- 344richardi (6/5): Yikes - Beautiful building friendly staff lovely room great breakfast!
That’s all the good.
The BAD.
I’d had a bad day all I needed was a warm bath good food a few beers and a wonderful sleep….
1 Warm Bath …tick
2 Beers …..tick
3 Food …..Mmmm not great as I requested smoked salmon on brown buttered bread, it arrived on white kind of dry sourdough no butter, I received a shrug when I complained.
4 Another beer ….tick off to bed….see 5.
5 OMG The bed mattress was thin lumpy absolutely atrocious, a skip would be too good for it, I have never in my long years of Hotels had such a terrible sleep on such a TERRIBLE BED.
6 Checking out I mentioned the above…..the kindly receptionist wrote the complaints on a piece of plain white paper followed with I will tell them …..I’ve taken the payment thank you.
In a kind sum up beautiful building ample car park great beer good wholesome breakfast for £126 B&B I expected better…..much better.
Would I stay again 90% no I wouldn’t.
Tankersley Manor is much better in my opinion.

- 433callumr (10/5): Beautiful Wedding - Well where to begin, we can’t thank Whitley enough all of the staff were amazing there wasn’t anything that was too much, they went above and beyond all day and that just added to the most perfect day for our wedding. From dealing with my wife the night before in the Queen Mary Suite which she described as beautiful and that the staff couldn’t have done more to help on the evening before and morning of our wedding, and from my arrival meeting Amanda who was in charge of our wedding on the day, it was just an unbelievable experience and the food was fantastic, everyone since has mentioned how good the food was. We can’t thank Whitley Hall enough for helping to make our Wedding Day perfect. I would recommend this venue to anyone looking to get married, wonderful grounds, a lovely setting and a fantastic venue
- Martin (5/5): Shame about-the room as the main hotel is a lovely old property. - Dinner was excellent, plenty of choice for breakfast, lounge was cosy with a lovely fire going in the grate Room had not been cleaned properly, rubbish on floor, shower over bath very difficult to gain entry as it was to near toilet. Accident waiting to happen, bed squeaked
- donrY1178LS (10/5): Family Wedding - Had fantastic stay at family wedding. The event, food and venue were first class, thanks for all the hard work which must go on behind the scenes.
- Oliver (10/5): Cosy, classic English charm - Beautiful building and very friendly & polite staff. We felt like we were visiting someones (very large) home.

- Carol (7/5): - Stayed here many times in the past as it’s convenient for us when visiting family on the area.
- William (8/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Lovely room but dated. However fits with the ambience of the hotel
- Nicola (8/5): Comfortable and enjoyable stay for the wedding we attended - Staff and venue location were excellent - perfect wedding venue We stayed room only - the deluxe room was a little stuffy and could be improved to be more light and airy
- A8834JIamandac (10/5): Lunch at Whitley Hall - We went for a "let's do lunch" offer that's on until the end of September and really enjoyed it. We got married at Whitley Hall, and everyone said how good the food was. Thanks to the team for a continued good experience.
- louisemZ4066AR (10/5): Amazing wedding venue - This is a late review as we got married here May 2024. Lucy our wedding coordinator was great, right from when we booked, put us at ease with everything! The building and grounds are perfect for a wedding and the food was incredible, all of our guests raved about how good the day and stay was.
We had an exclusive wedding package here so a lot of our guests stayed, all who agreed the rooms and staff were top tier. What is a great plus is they have their own styling, hair & makeup and florist team in house! All that you can have appointments with before the big day!
Amazing from start to finish!
- H4242IQkarins (4/5): I would choose somewhere else. - signing into reception was not a welcoming atmosphere. The remainder of staff that I came across continued in that fashion (although I have to say they were lacking on staff). The first breakfast we went to was a full English, however we later became aware that there should have been a menu on each table offering alternative food! I didn't see such a menu & when asking other guests they weren't aware either. Clearing the tables was very slow to say the least. The 2nd morning there was nowhere to sit for breakfast & we asked about the empty table in the next room and was told by restaurant manager "no, that is for dinner guests and she could find us seats but not together!". When the bride's father heard of this he spoke to the manager who said we could sit on the empty table but only brought 2 chairs when there were 6 of us eating. Her attitude towards us was that we were being a nuisance. The wedding meal seating was very cramped but the food was nice.We had no coffee maker in our room but we did find 4 sachets of coffee, 3 tea bags and 1 small carton of milk. I'd have thought in a four star hotel we would have more condiments in the bathroom than 2 small bottles of shower gel. We'd have had more in a premier lodge so my opinion is such that I won't be returning to Whitely Hall hotel.
- traceypI8535VF (4/5): Disappointing - Went as a guest for a wedding, found the staff miserable, unhelpful and found their visitors an inconvenience. The breakfast was a nightmare with space and the tables were never cleared.
The setting is beautiful and the rooms were clean .
- robertbD9814GR (10/5): A Special Birthday Gift - My Husband and I were given an overnight stay at this hotel as a Special Birthday gift.
on entering the hotel we were given our key and stayed in the newer part of the building, Our room was not only very comfortable but had character to it, just the simply touches, i.e. History of the building on the T.V. screen, two comfortable armchairs and a foot stool. The breakfast was most enjoyable with a good selection off the menu, and the dining room had an olde world charm, so relaxing. also there was a very pleasant sitting room. I would certainly recommend . I would be very happy for another stay at this delightful hotel.
- Mary (10/5): - Fab venue. Great breakfast.
- Christopher (10/5): Because you're worth it - The hotel is really lovely. A touch of luxury. A friendly greeting on arrival. Beautifully presented rooms. Lovely grounds. Food very high standard. Overall we loved this hotel.

- yorkshirelass39 (4/5): Voting with my feet - Three of us had paella, the rice was crunchy!! Fairly tasteless. Two had fried fish which was overcooked on the outside , cold on the inside. Table service was ok. When we pointed these things out at payment time we were offered free teas and coffees. Only Three of the 6 wanted coffees, which btw tasted nothing like coffee. Drinks, well you'd expect them to be expensive. They were. A lot has been spent on the refurb, not before time at the expense of quality of cooking.
- Portch (8/5): -
- DAVE197909 (6/5): OK if passing through and you have deep pockets!! - The location is nice. Nice gardens and period building with charm and character. Every request seemed like hard work for the staff. The service at breakfast was awful, slow, and disorganised. Staff seemed disinterested and disingenuous.
My wife was tidying tables and chairs in the garden that had just been left for whatever reason?
- thomasjJ8168SN (10/5): Amazing wedding venue - Myself and my now Husband got married here on the 24th July 2025 and the day was nothing short of fantastic. We stayed for two nights and the staff were extremely friendly & accommodating, and really made our day stress free and perfect. All our guests were more than happy with their rooms, and the meals were absolutely gorgeous with very generous portions. The forever yours styling team really brought our vision to life, and the in house DJ was out of this world and kept the dance floor filled at all times. I would recommend an outdoor wedding as our photos are truly stunning, all our guests were taken aback by the stunning grounds. A massive special mention to Joe who ran our day and ensured everything ran accordingly, he was very personable and made us feel at ease. Well done to everyone at Whitley. It will always have a special place in our hearts.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Out of the way but well worth the drive. - Delicious breakfast and dinner options. Comfortable rooms.
- Marion (8/5): Good apart from noise - Clean, good food, comfy bed, excellent shower Singing from guests outside wedding when trying to sleep
- Julia_5590 (10/5): Perfect birthday lunch - I had a wonderful meal for my 70th birthday which I celebrated with 18 family guests. The location met all our expectations for elegance and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and cosy. The staff were both efficient and friendly, and contributed to making to meal really special.
All 18 guests left with happy memories of the day, despite the restaurant being at full capacity.
