Guest Reviews
- Michael (10/5): - The property was a great location by the square and ferry dock. And the staff and hotel was clean and neat for the great price.
- Josue (10/5): Hotel Mary Carmen - We stayed 4 night and really enjoyed ourselves. Great location, filling and convenient breakfast. Enjoyed watch the turtles in the main patio area.
- Ciprian (8/5): - This hotel has a lot of character. Location is the best.
- Anna (8/5): - Very nice with great decor. I’ll be back. I’m very happy with this budget option. I like the patio with turtles . It’s nice to have a place to cook. The breakfast could be a little better.
- Douglas (10/5): Great place to stay - I’ve been staying here for years. It’s right downtown where all the restaurants are centrally located very very clean. Can’t say enough about this place. Will stay there again.
- Kip (10/5): - Nice property close to every thing
- edward keith (10/5): Top quality - Great location, easy walk to the ferry terminal plenty of restaurants nearby felt very safe quiet comfortable very helpful staff. Appreciated the bulk filtered water in the lobby. Reduce waste with glass glasses eco-friendly. Would stay there again on future trips
- Theresa (6/5): - Very nice old hotel
- Margaret (10/5): Sweet, quite hotel. - The hotel was lovely and all the employees too. The hot water was a bit of a challenge some days. I loved the drinkable water available.
- Belmullet (10/5): Perfect Location - Clean, friendly, safe, comfortable and PERFECT location. No need to say more.
I prefer to keep this review simple, because the Mary Carmen is simply a pleasure and has become my Cozumel home for 2 months in the winter.
However, Tripadvisor requires 200 words…ha ha
- Paul (8/5): Great stay at HMC. - Great stay at Hotel Mary Carmen. Room was updated since last year, with new tile in bathroom, and nice shower head. Ac worked great and also ceiling fan when ac was not necessary. In room safe was nice, and plenty of water available in dispensers on each floor. The turtles are still there in the courtyard, making that area pleasant. Jose Angel at front desk is helpful as always.
- Peter (8/5): - Well maintained property. Definitely recommend.
- James (10/5): - Clean, safe, comfortable, friendly and perfect location. Need I say more?
- Murugananthathas (8/5): - It's right in the middle of town centre.
- James (10/5): - After many stays, still my favorite
- David (10/5): - Clea, safe and all employees were great. Location was perfect.
- William (8/5): - Nice property in good location.
- Levi (10/5): - Sparkling clean. Friendly helpful staff. Good location. Nice breakfast. Interesting displays of antiques throughout the building.
- Rafael (6/5): - You can hear pigeons make a prolonged cooing sound all night long and hear people talking and laughing at 6am. Bed is very uncomfortable.
Otherwise it is a Cozy place at a reasonable price.
- Julia (10/5): - The hotel is really nice and the vintage decoration is amazing. My daughter and i love it! The staff was really helpful with everything; they help me a lot a couple of days that my daughter was not feeling well and also with directions, ideas or what to do, etc. The location is central.
- Peter (8/5): - Enjoyed my stay at Mary Carmen. Great value for the price point on Cozumel comparatively. Rooms are clean. Linens are nice. Beds are meh. Bathrooms are acceptable, could use more cleaning in the shower but that's pretty normal at this price point honestly. Turtles are fun. Surprised how quiet it was at night. Courtyard is nice. WiFI works. Staff is friendly and helpful. Stayed almost a week.
- fehmida (8/5): - A little off the msin strip so was quiet. Property had everything that I needed for my stay.
- Victor M. (6/5): - A/C terribly noisy. Had to turn it off if I wanted to sleep comfortably
- Spencer (10/5): Dive vacation - Very affordable, stay was great. A great basic hotel for a dive trip. Nothing special but more than necessary.
- 151dickeyh (6/5): Decent budget friendly hotel - I've stayed at this hotel several times over the years. It is always clean, and budget friendly. I prefer staying in cheap hotels, because I don't spend much time in my room. Basically just need a place to sleep and shower. I dislike the big resorts . I prefer to stay in town and walk everywhere I need to go. Great location, just off the town square. May need to use a translator app or speak Spanish.
- X3588CCteds (8/5): Mary Carmen! - Enjoyed my week at Hotel Mary Carmen. Well worth the price. Quiet, nice AC, good location, friendly employees, good breakfast, clean with antique decor. Staying downtown was fun. A herd of turtle lives in the courtyard and will come to visit you. I would definitely stay there again.
- Liza (10/5): - Miguel and other staffs are very nice. Location is convenient, you can walk around the downtown. Restaurants, dive shops, pharmacy and souvenir shops are walking distance. Easy to get taxi from the property.
I came for diving and the room has lots of hanger to dry my stuff. Cons: pillows and duvet cover kind of stink like they haven’t been washed in a while.
Overall the property is great.
- Fernando (10/5): - Excelente ubicación
- Chris (10/5): - Friendly courteous staff. Clean and comfortable. Nice antique homey decor. Great location.
- James (10/5): - Always great!
- James (10/5): - Loved the staff and convenience to so many different things and places. Also, access to refrigerator, microwave and stove. Good breakfast available in the hotel.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Cannot say enough about how great this hotel is. The staff , location, clean as can be ...10
- Jana (8/5): Great Value for your money - Hotel May Carmen is a very good choice in the Heart of Cozumel shopping. Friendly and professional staff, basic and clean. Great value for your money in el centro!
- Heidi (10/5): - You couldn’t ask for a better location, and the staff was as helpful as could be. AC worked great.
- Julie (10/5): - We only stayed here for one night but we loved it! The hotel is quaint and unique. The front desk staff was fantastic and answered all of our questions, helped us with scooter rentals, and gave us tips on things to see and do. We also loved that there were so many dining and shopping options within walking distance. We would stay here again.
- Jamie (8/5): - Likes.
Older property for the nostalgic. Turtles in the courtyard. Hotel is about 300 meters to the ferry terminal. Quiet area.
Dislikes
The walls are thin (you can hear your neighbors). No refrigerators in rooms. You can rent a frig for 300 pesos/day. Nearby OXO store stops selling alcohol at 5pm. Streets are like a ghost town after 6pm due to cruise ship clientele returning to ships.
- Sang (8/5): Great place - Nice people and great location. The room is clean but little dated, sewer smell coming back in from shower so make sure you keep the cap on the drain when not in use.
- Paul (10/5): - We have used Mary Carmen for short stays over the years when airline schedules and resort schedules did not match up. Very friendly and close to food / shopping in downtown San Migel.
- ADRIANA (10/5): - The breakfast deal is not worth it. You can ear better for less around the area.
- Deborah (10/5): - We loved Mary Carmen. So much so that we stayed an extra night. Rooms are great and beds very comfortable. Staff and guests are friendly and it’s a great location.
- DENISE (10/5): - Good location for doing everything, recommend!
- Charla (8/5): - The indoor terrace is super cool! Lots of turtles live there and they are fun to watch. Rooms are older but still clean. Not a lot of street noise or barking dogs. Full security 24 hours a day is nice to have.
- David (8/5): - Cool little hotel in the middle of everything to eat and drink. Lots of small stores along the street that has no motorized vehicles. Nice stay!
- Douglas (10/5): Hotel Mary Carmen: Fantastico - Have stayed here multiple times and have always been satisfied. The turtles that they have on the patio have always been cool. This is the first time that I've tried their Hotel breakfast and it was great and the price was also very affordable. Would highly recommend this to anybody that wanted to stay in Cozumel economically. Easy access to all the restaurants and shops. Can't say enough will stay there again.
- Elliott (10/5): Precious Old Mexico - This is "Old Mexico" at its best, a precious experience. There is not a shred of unctious resortification. Pleasant, quiet, excellent staff located right in the center of town. Do not rent a car... you can walk anywhere, The plaza is out the front door where you can eat anywhere... Highest recommendations!
- Alan (10/5): - I spent 5 nights and had no problems. The room was clean and the staff made up the beds and brought fresh towels and bottled water every day. It is right in the center of a shopping area so there are plenty of restaurants nearby within a 5 minute walk and dozen a bit further than that. It would be nice to have a little refrigerator in the room but overall I enjoyed my stay and will go back again.
- Eduardo E (10/5): - This hotel is in a perfect spot right next to the central market and is a great place to stay. This has been my third time staying here and the staff is always friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and it's just an overall great experience.
- Bobo185 (10/5): Nice place in the middle of everything - For the price point and location, I had to give a 5 rating
We stayed at the Hotel Mary Carmen on Cozumel for our last night of a 6-day birding trip with Ecocolors. We arrived in Cozumel via the ferry and it was a short walk…less than 10 minutes, to get to the hotel. The hotel is tucked in among the local shops and we missed it both when we arrived and when we came back after dinner. Check in was quick and the staff very friendly. The hotel is a courtyard designed with a shared space in the middle…including a kitchen area. Very nice and peaceful.
Our room was small and basic, but was clean and had everything we needed. AC worked great, had hot water, and the bed was comfortable. Two small things – our safe was locked when we got there…did not bother resolving and you had to work hard to get the drapes to block out the very bright courtyard lights.
We did not have any meals here because there were so many places close by. It is right in the main shopping area. I would stay here again if I was in Cozumel for a few days.
- Trek25151812377 (10/5): Cozumel - We go to Cozumel several times a year and alway return to Hotel Mary Carmen. First of all, the receptionist, Miguel, is always friendly and knowledgeable and speaks English well. Also we noticed the accommodations are alway excellent. The Hotel crew work daily to maintain cleanliness and the rooms are comfortable.
- Shanee (8/5): - Had a nice time. Very close to chanad with no electricit key so good for shabbat
- Ioana Carmen (10/5): Amazing stay in Cozumel - Everything was great. The check in was fast, the front desk helped us even rent a scooter at a great price for our stay there. The hotel is clean, beautifully designed and the room is spacious. They have a kitchen that can be used by everyone in the hotel, which was very convenient. All the staff there is polite and they do a great job with the place, would definitely return.
- Lorne (10/5): - Second time I’ve stayed at the hotel. It’s clean, the staff is friendly and speaks English. Good pressure hot water and the A/C works.
Jeff, Calgary
- Barbara (8/5): - Great place for a night or two. Front desk person was not very friendly
- sebastianmagnuss (2/5): STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOLDY SCAM! - Moldy rooms and rude, fraudelent personnel!
Me, my father and uncle thought it looked nice with a great location. We paid up front (BIG mistake) and then the concierge took us to the first room.
Immediately i got hit by a stench of mold and could see the curtains were filled with black mold. I have asthma and mold is just about the worst for my condition.
We got a new room (same issue) and in our third room we thought it was better. After laying on the bed for five minutes though, i noticed how i couldnt breathe and started getting nausea. Again i checked the room. Mold in curtains and corners.
At this point we just wanted a refund and find something else. Three rooms all in terrible, moldy and smelly condition. But the staff refused and would only pay half back to us. Their explanation? We had laid on the beds.
All in all a terrible, sickening and scammy experience - this place is filled with fake reviews and i would tell everyone:
NEVER come here! And never pay before seeing the rooms
P.S
Cant wait for them to reply with some lame lie trying to cover it up.
- SHANA (10/5): - Very cute little hotel - great for the price.
- Austina (10/5): - Super cute hotel! The room was clean and had everything we needed for a weekend stay. It is close to the ferry and is located right in town. I would stay here again and I highly recommend it! The staff were friendly and super helpful when looking for a beach club.
- Judy (8/5): - Great location!
- Jimena (6/5): - Is ok for the money we paid overall clean. Bedsheets and towels were harsh but clean like said hotel is ok for the money you paid.
- Anne (10/5): - Cute turtles in the lobby! Very clean rooms with working AC and warm showers. Walking distance from ferry and shopping/restaurant area.
- Desirae (10/5): - Staff is fantastic, location is great and the hotel is absolutely beautiful
- Holly (8/5): Downtown Gem - Loved this authentic hotel in the heart of downtown. Close to everything. Clean and breakfast is a steal! Would stay again!!
- Paul (8/5): - Great location. Clean and friendly.
- Marlon (10/5): - Very nice, no frills hotel. Best hotel value in Cozumel. Looking forward to staying there again.
- KARL (10/5): - Perfect, good price and great breakfast!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I’ve stayed here many times and will always come back here. It feels like home away from home with friendly staff that takes great care of you.
- Michelle (10/5): Adorable! - What an adorable hotel in the heart of the square! Walk to numerous shops, restaurants from this location! Highly recommend!
- James (10/5): - Great value and location. Excellent fresh cooked breakfast for a couple of dollars. Very friendly and helpful staff.
- Anthony (10/5): - I loved the location. The courtyard was also great to relax and visit/meet other guests. The beds were hard but other than that, this place was awesome. I would definitely stay here again.
- S (10/5): Top choice - Spacious, comfortable room, good wifi and water refill. The hotel can also arrange bike / scooter / car rentals making it hassle free in terms of pick up and drop off. Friendly staff. Quiet, despite a couple talking late into the night in the courtyard! I missed out on the breakfast on the first floor, not realising until my last day. Id definitely stay again.
- Kelly (10/5): Yes, recommend - Convenient location, nice breakfast, historical location, great for the price, rooms were comfortable.
- GEORGE (10/5): - We were surprised at how nice the hotel was for the money charged.
- Heath (8/5): - .
- alisonmA4223ZI (10/5): Hotel fun - What a lovely friendly hotel.
Very friendly accommodating staff.
I was booked in straight away (without a reservation)
I asked to change my room as the first was right next to the laundry and staff area and was a little noisy. It was changed straight away with no hassle. I was very grateful for their kindness.
The quirky decor and tortoise 🐢 also made it a very memorable stay!
- Velvet (10/5): - Room was very clean and staff was very helpful and pleasant. Great location on the square
- Elena (10/5): - Great location and great price. It is located in the heart of downtown. You’ll have shopping and dining located outside the front door. They offer a communal fridge to store food and drink and everyone is respectful of others items. If I had to pinpoint one negative aspect, our double bed room had the ac located directly above one of the beds (that person was very cold). Make sure to ask the front desk for tips on tours and dining.
- Sabrina (8/5): - I like the proximity to everything!
Also the prices was only $50 USD a night which was great.
At night the area was calm and quiet and I was able to sleep.
The hotel itself also felt very safe...
- James (8/5): Fridge - Nevera - Nice hotel.
There is no fridge in the room.
No hay nevera en la habitación.
- John Richard (6/5): - Property was close to downtown amenities, could walk to everything. Quiet.
- Grant (10/5): - Cheap and clean
- Aimee (10/5): - Nice room decor - tiles and nooks in the room, ample storage space, comfortable and clean. Beds were somewhat on the hard side, though that's more to my liking than too soft. A/C and fans were both available - there wasn't much adjustment to all or nothing so we kept the a/c going all night and used the heavier blankets. Besides the noise from the a/c, the place was really quiet though could be loud if lots of people were in the nearby courtyard.
- Aimee (10/5): - The hotel was a block away from the main ferry station, near a nice plaza and lots of shops and restaurants and diving centers. There were cute turtles and the courtyard and a shared kitchen available to guests. We liked it
- Chelsey (8/5): - The hotel is cute & quaint with typical Mexican decor, located on a promenade so it is not on a street that allows cars. I don't think they even have a parking lot. Centrally located, walkable to pretty much everything - restaurants, grocery stores, shops & if you do need to go further, you can catch a taxi on the main road, a 2min walk away. Ferry dock is 5min walk away. There is a large park / open space about a block away as well. The clock tower in that park is loud & you will hear in your room!
About the hotel itself, it is a basic, bare bones hotel- no frills, but it has what you need for a comfortable stay. Staff is friendly & are mostly bilingual. There is a communal kitchen onsite. Kitchen supplies are a bit scarce, but there is some there to use. No one touched my food that I stored in the fridge while I was there. The beds are firm. Not much water pressure in the shower. There is a safe in the room for valuables & the TV plays a mix of Spanish & English channels. AC works great & the ceiling fan really circulates air well too! The windows to the room are thin, unfortunately. You will hear people & their conversations clearly & loudly if they are in the hallways and courtyard. It's an open air hotel, so if it rains, the hallways do get damp. There is no elevator (that I saw). The inner courtyard is nice & the cutest thing is that they have turtles that roam around freely in there all day & night. Very fun!
All in all, great room rates; I would stay there again.
- Felipe (10/5): - Nice staff
- Wander02816625789 (10/5): October 21 - Stayed here for 2 nights this week. Clean hotel and friendly staff. Great location, only 4 minute walk from ferry terminal. Very good price for what you get. Recommend trying La Punta bar/restaurant which is a few minutes away for craft beer made on site and hood pizza
- Frederick (10/5): Great place for the money. - Nice nice, old but very well maintained. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Family atmosphere. Kitchen area for cooking. Walking distance to great restaurants. My first time to stay at the M.C. was 32 years ago Your person properly is always safe
- Julianne (10/5): - I always stay at the Mary Carmen perfect location an awesome service
- Dacafev (6/5): Could be way better with little improvements - Placement is very good. The deco is very nice, as well as having a lot of 230v plugs and even USB plugs directly on the wall. Turtles are a very nice touch also. I didn't like the fact that the two male receptionist I had were a bit rude, never smiled.
When I got there, the first room had a lot of ants. It can happen in a island and it's not a big deal. I asked to change and they gave me another room instantly. But the second room was also full of ants just behind the cushions. So I asked again for a new room, and the receptionist could like not really believe me and had to check by himself that I am telling the truth.
Then, he gave me a third room in the second floor that was clean and without ants. So I don't complain about two rooms with ants. That can happen everywere in the world at any place. Just that they didn't really checked out the rooms before we arrived and had to check by himself if I was telling the truth about ants.
Second complain is about breakfast. At the check in, he didn't told me that I should tell the night before at what hour I would like to have some breakfast next day. So when we arrived for breakfast, well, there was not breakfast at all. So we had to go have breakfast at another place.
These a just little improvements that can easily be done to really give the best service to the costumer. With receptionist full of smiles and a breakfast that can be taken anywhere around 7:30am and 10:30am for example, I would have given 5/5 whitout hesitation becase really, the hotel as a perfect location and I love the charm around decoration. I really wanted to give a better score but I think and hope that this way, it is more constructive and informative.
Good fortune for you and thank you for reading this long critic

- michaeltmara (10/5): Great Little Hotel in a Great Spot - A perfect spot in Cozumel if you want to explore the downtown area. The hotel is about a block from the main market and is within walking distance of the ferry pier. We had a good one night stay and if we decide to stay in downtown Cozumel again, I would definitely book here again.
- AlfredaC6 (10/5): I will visit again soon - The lovely place in the heart off downtown where you can have it all , restaurants ,music , tour’s and much more. As soon you you walk out it is this tasty restaurant with delicious seafood add live music so romantic. The rooms are clean. And it’s a little kitchen and the patio were are you can prepare your food in it Sorrento by Turtles
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Mary Carmen is the perfect place for divers. It is located downtown, one block from the town square. Walking distance to wonderful restaurants. There are few amenities at the MC. After a day of diving and riding the boat in the sun, the immaculately clean and cool rooms and patio are perfect.
- Israel (10/5): Excelente precio y calidad - La ubicación es muy buena, sólo a unos pasos de la estación del ferry. Limpio y cómodo. Me he quedado dos veces ahí y el serivcio sigue siendo bueno y los precios muy accesibles.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean friendly safe and close to the restaurants and ferry
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The charm. You might not like it if you expect a swimming pool, sauna, etc. But if you appreciate charm (and turtles) you will like it. The staff is excellent.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - So cute, pretty small but had AC, Wifi, and TV, towels, shower, bathroom, closets, beds, and everything as needed. No fridge. Staff was very friendly, courteous and accommodating. Atmosphere very relaxing and enjoyable. Very quaint!
- Brian (10/5): Excellent location. Authentic Mexicana - This is a great downtown hotel with an authentic Mexican grandparents decor.
AC, and wifi were great. Good overall condition. My shower head had a leak on the side. It didn't bother me. Hot water and great shower pressure.
I recommend staying here.
Oh the location is excellent. Right by the main square which is right across the ferry terminal. In the middle of San Miguel, Cozumel
- wendya619 (10/5): Exceeded my expectations! - Clean, attentive staff, and conveniently located in downtown Cozumel. However, the best part about the stay is the social turtles in the courtyard area. The turtles are so friendly, they come running out to greet you, especially if you have food. The hotel offers an amazing home cooked breakfast for 100 pesos. Also beautiful view upstairs roof area. Classy, vintage decor. Love this place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked how quaint the property felt. The location was ideal for me! I liked the availability of filtered water at no additional charge. Will definitely stay here in future.
Situations that could be improved...I had to ask for hot water everytime I needed to take a shower, which was inconvenient, but I adjusted to the situation. My AC discontinued working after my first night. I did not bother reporting it. I was fine with the ceiling fan. New Year's Eve night I arrived at the hotel after hours and no one was at the front desk to answer my call to let me in. I stood outside for 20 minutes, before a young man finally came to the front. I thought I was going to have to sleep outside!? Very unusual situation for a hotel.
