Guest Reviews
- Pailin (6/5): Not impressed - Some rooms has refurbished, the mattress quite old although the staff try to give the best service mind but some case can’t be replace for it such as the time limit for breakfast start at 7am till 8:30 was time out then staffs hurry up to close down even a drink corner was immediately empty ☹️
- I_S_B_L_o (8/5): Quaint hotel with a nice view - The inn was easily accessible by car. Though the room was small, it had a mini lounging area. The toilet was a little tight. Morning breakfast spread was lovely and enjoyable. There was no lift hence not wheelchair accessibility. Perhaps the smoking room on the 1st floor could be enclosed rather than just be separated by only a curtain as the smoke permeates through the entire walkway.
- Kam Fai (8/5): -
- Sung won (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We had problems with the checkin, then it was resolved. Thank you. The breakfast is great.
- JamTart1010 (8/5): Huge rooms and delicious buffet breakfast - We stayed at North Country Inn for two weeks as part of a Whiteroom tour. The rooms were huge by Japanese standard and the futon beds were just as big (super king?). The beds are a little hard by western standards but after a day of skiing I still managed to get good night sleeps.
Rooms only have green tea so if you want anything else you’ll have to purchase in Japan or bring your own.
There is a tv but it only has Japanese channels.
The restaurant serves a fantastic buffet breakfast with muesli, toast, yogurt options as well as salads, curries, bacon, eggs, spaghetti bol, soups, potato wedges and breads etc.
The staff that run this place are what make it. Their English is pretty limited but with google translate and hand gestures you can get by. Everyone is so helpful and always has a smile and willing to help where they can.
There is a small lounge where you can sit with others but the bar doesn’t open until 6pm when the restaurant opens. There is a vending machine that sells beer and strong zero (alcoholic lemonade?) which you can drink in your room.
There is a good drying room too.
The location is about a 20minute walk to Furano ski field and there is a snow shuttle. There is a hotel restaurant that serves basic Japanese cuisine and if you want to venture further afield there are more restaurants about 30min walk away. Bear in mind you will be walking in the dark, in snowy conditions along a main road so you might just want to go by taxi.
In summary we had a fantastic stay and thoroughly recommend staying with them.
- emmaandmitch (10/5): Excellent stay! - We stayed for a week here, and the staff were wonderful, they were always more than happy to help, and were great at speaking English. The breakfast included was amazing each morning and the dinners here also were great after a day on the slopes when you don’t want to venture any further. A shuttle runs from the accomodation to the ski field countless times a day. You can’t go wrong booking this place, would highly recommended.
- Eastpedro (4/5): Getting dated - Stayed with a ski group. Good proximity to both sides of the ski resort. Staff is very helpful and friendly, but with limited English skills. The free onsen is nice, with both in and outdoor pools, but the outdoor one is very (1-ish person) small. Otherwise, the place is being neglected. My room had a hole in the wall, missing art and no chair to sit in (just a stool). There is a matted area with a low table, and thin cushions to sit on, but this doesn’t suit old western bones. Furniture in the common areas is looking dingy and carpets are worn and dirty. The underside of the eve outside my window had fallen apart, exposing metal framing. I think this could be a nice place, but it hasn’t been kept up well.
- SDan (6/5): Hotels Catered More For Locals IMO - Book a Japanese/Western-style Room1 with breakfast & dinner for 1 night end June. I might be biased. A very typical Japanese hotel in the way that check in is strictly 3pm. We arrived at 245pm and was told checked in is only available at 3pm. A norm in Japan hotel.
Breakfast\Dinner is time slot base, we are given 3 time slot to choose from as limited number of seats\table. Food is reasonable to us thought nothing exceptional. The hotel looks pretty popular among locals as we see mainly locals staying over. Would try another hotel the next visit.
Pros:
-Provide breakfast and/or dinner option. It suite us to have dinner with in the hotel as we drive from New Chitose airport to Furano after a long flight.
-Big free parking space
Cons:
-No lift to bring you to 2nd or 3rd flow. Can be inconvenient if having bulky luggage. I known about the facts but still find it troublesome as was assigned a room at 3rd floor.
-Breakfast serve till 830am only. Again is probably a norm in Japan. But i am not use to it as i am a "late" person.
- MagdaleneWai (6/5): I dont speak english - Nice cosy hotel. Beautiful environment but cant get good restaurant around that area. Have problem communicating with the staff. But luckily managed to get one staff that can speak a little english and got us the booking for husky sleigh ride.
- Thomas_5162 (8/5): Comfortable Stayed - Stayed for 2 nights on December 26&27. Mid range hotel a bit dated and no elevator, will be problematic if you got big heavy luggage, but for us it was ok. We got the room w/ two twin bed and tatami area that can sleep 2-4person, big for us 2 adults w/ 2 children. It was -12 degrees outside but the heater worked well and kept us warm. Bathroom a bit small but we use the onsen. The included dinner and breakfast were good. Big free parking in front of the hotel. Front desk service was friendly and efficient and provided needed information regarding skiing lessons for children and places to visit etc.
- Jane (8/5): - From the hotel, will need to drive 20 min for the nearest restaurants.
- Jerry (6/5): - This is a quiet place with a nice bed. It was clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Front staff was very nice, room is clean and big, but there was no elevator so this will be a minor down side of the stay.
- Tyrone (8/5): - Competitive price around the area. Nice little hotel.
- zoenicks (6/5): Ski trip - This is a basic inn. Taking that into account it’s ok for the price and given the great location to the ski hill. The beds are not very comfy and quite hard. There is an indoor and outdoor onsen a small bar and a good boot room. The food in the restaurant isn’t anything to write home about but you are a 10-15 min walk into town. The breakfast is not too bad and the staff are very accommodating.
- fionac800 (6/5): Pleasant hotel - We were a party of three adults and the room was spacious enough to accommodate us with two twin beds and a separate area with tatami mats. There's even a small indoor and outdoor onsen which we found ourselves using often as the bathroom cum toilet in the hotel room is really tiny and cramped. There's ample free parking infront of the hotel which is located within a short driving distance to town and nice eateries. But be warned that this hotel doesn't have lifts and we had to climb 3 flights of stairs to our room on the highest level 3. Luckily, we didn't have heavy luggages with us.
- JaimeT22 (8/5): Great location, quiet tranquil environment - Hotel located at edge of a forest and surrounded by nature. It has a nice rustic feel to it. Located about 5 mins drive from Furano city center and close to Ningle Terrace. Seven-eleven convenience store was just around the corner within 1 min drive away. Room was large by Japanese standard with mini fridge, electric kettle, hair dryer and other amenities. Breakfast was provided and was good with wide selection of food such as western and Japanese. However, there was no elevator in the hotel so u will need to carry your own luggage up the stairs. Some stains and tear in the bedsheets, but overall room was quite clean.
- johnmQ2588WD (10/5): A true Gem in Furano - My Family n Friends a total group of 7 spent 14 great nights at the North Country Inn, We found the twin rooms to be surprisingly large and well appointed for Japan, all contained an ensuite, the beds were comfortable, the hotel is very clean the staff exceptionally helpful and obliging, the breakfast each morning was excellent and catered for most people's taste, there is a nice cosy bar area, the drying room easily caters for everyone's needs I happily recommend this as a place to stay.
- 556grahaml (8/5): Good Mid-Range accom - Stayed at North Country Inn while on a Whiteroom Tour. The only downside of the hotel is its location. It's located between Kitanomine and the New Price Hotel and in most cases a bit too far to walk to either. Luckily for skiing the hotel has a shuttle bus service and a taxi can take you to cafes and restaurants in Kitanomine for less than 1,000 yen. Our room was large by Japanese standards and the hotel service was always friendly and helpful. The manager has also made a great effort to cater for westerners without spoiling the Japanese experience. (you don't have to take your shoes off in reception!) breakfast was always good with a little Japanese food and a traditional western breakfast also. Just be sure the location suits you. Wifi in rooms was always very good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): good ski hotel - stayed 2 nights while skiing at furano. dedicated ski shuttle to and from hotel and drying room makes the hotel good for ski trip. room was
on 2nd floor, no lift but staff extremely helpful. room was modern and cosy. good heaters for drying wet gloves beanies. breakfast had a wide selection but a bit fried food based
smoking space at base of stairs meant that smoke filters into hallways. no smile smell in our room. very generous and helpful hosts. location is about 10-15 min walk i think from furano restaurants but the hotel also provides a one way shuttle to town. taxi fare is about 1500yen back - we enjoyed our stay and while not on snow, convenient to getting to snow and back.
- StockbridgeSharon (8/5): Furano Ski Trip - Very comfortable, friendly and clean. Great buffet breakfast and dining service dinner. Appreciated the No Smoking in the restaurant. In the heart of wonderful ski areas. A clean but somewhat small outdoor Onsen. A larger indoor Onsen.
- Weng Kuen (8/5): A cosy resort - The place is a bit far from the JR station. However it was close to the ski resort, which unfortunately was partially closed due to heavy snow
- wkwonghk (6/5): Cozy & simple for ski stay - Spacious 3 beds room. Helpful and nice crew, both front desk & dining room. Don't forget to buy discount lift ticket here.
The Onsen is a bit small but the view is fine and peaceful.
No kiosk and shop at all, none even at the surrounding. Better to have a car drive in.
- 769martinm (6/5): A simple hotel with good buffet dinner - We stayed here for two nights and it was pleasant. The room was pretty basic but it was very spacious. This is a three-star hotel so we did not expect much, but the buffet dinner really impressed us. There was a variety of food for you to choose from and I particularly liked the grilled beef, chicken, lamb and pork. It was delicious and they cooked the food in front of you. On the first night fondue was offered! Don’t forget to try the dessert – melon with lavender ice cream! P.S. The wifi here is very good - fast and stable!
- Hessienoogen (8/5): Great stay @ Resort Inn - We stayed for 5 nights in February and absolutely loved our stay. The staff are absolutely delightful and very friendly and helpful. Getting to the slopes was fairly easy, with shuttle buses every hour - otherwise it was easy enough to get a taxi to get around. We loved the restaurant suggestions that we received in the information book and highly recommend you book through the reception as they will drop you off to dinner in the shuttle bus!
The room itself was great, had all the amenities we needed!
The buffet breakfast was also surprisingly good!
Wifi was only available in the lounge areas, which we didn't find to be a problem!
Would definitely stay here again!
- Sng (8/5): Nice hotel, but a little tricky to get around - Hotel was a little secluded, though shuttle buses are available.(Still situwated on main road though) Especially in winter, there are one way shuttle to town and two way shuttle to the ropeway, which is near New Furano Prince hotel. During my stay there is an English trained staff, and were all very polite. Breakfast is included even though it is not reflected in the package. Room has 2 levels, where bottom is tatami and top are western beds.
- Wesley (8/5): Comfort, Peace, Nice Outdoor Onsen - Very quiet country side and the room is very clean and comfort. Serve nice breakfast (although not very much choices on the foods). Must try the outdoor Onsen, is small but the feel is awesome.
- Navigator22 (4/5): Unusually poor service for a Japanese Inn - I have been to Japan countless times. I cannot recall a poor experience before UNTIL this time. That speaks a lot for this Inn. First of all, this place do not have an elevator. Heaven forbid if they put u at the 3rd floor and you were not travelling light or with children or elderlies. Unfortunately we were put at level 3 due to the high season we could not switch to a lower floor. To compound the problem, they do not even volunteer to assist in our luggage. We have to specifically insist. That was on checking in. Upon checking out at 9am, we requested for assistance with our bags, we were told by the lady receptionist that she was the only person available. No porter service, no guys. This I thought was rather ridiculous considering in any decent hotel common sense dictates that morning check-outs were among the busiest time of the day for movement of people and luggage.
Back to our saga during check in. We arrived at 7pm. It was raining heavily. We were offer ZERO assistance with our disembarking. Nevermind the bags, none of the staff even bothered to hold an umbrella for us while we disembark and unload our bags. We had to ask for umbrellas, we had to hold it ourselves. The front desk staff just stood there. We were incredulous at this level of callous service in Japan.
Lets move on to the facilities. The onsen was tiny hole in the wall with a pool that resembles more a private family than that of a public onsen. Overall the place was quite run down. And we had the feeling, there was a fair bit of corners being cut to save cost.
The food was at best average. Again unusual in Japan, where even in the smallest of inns and in the most remote of places, good food tend to be the norm then exception.
One of my travelling mate is Japanese. And he was totally embarrassed and shocked at the level of poor service and facilities. We all swore, never again to this place. Please stay away!
- CK (10/5): Quiet and neat - The surrounding is green and beautiful. Room is spacious and comfortable. The restaurant is beside a green slope, nice view!
Food (breakfast) is good with enough variety - mostly western style.
Hotel staff is helpful and recommended a good place for us for dinner.
Location within 5 min drive to town centre.
- Dougsworld (8/5): Comfortable and delightful staff - This place does not have a high rating so if you are looking for luxury then try something else.
If in fact you want a warm and comfortable place to stay and get a very friendly level of service along with good wholesome food then check North Country out. I stayed here as part of a Whiteroom guided tour and found everything very satisfactory.
The staff will book restaurants and taxis for you. They have a free shuttle service to the ski hill and into town. The front desk staff are happy to look after you and speak very good English.
I would definitely stay here again when visiting Furano in the winter.
- FeedTheFishMayo (2/5): Never again - This is the second time I have stayed at the North Country Inn at Furano due to being on a White Rooms Ski Tour. I cam back to Japan for the skiing and being on the guided tour is great but the accommodation at the North County Inn is not great, from my perspective. There are two levels and the rooms on the ground floor are okay in that they have more space. The rooms upstairs are a nightmare. The beds are in a loft and the stairs/ladder to get into the loft area is downright dangerous. If you need to get up to go to the toilet during the night and do not want to disturb others then you are literally taking you life in your own hands. The stairs/ladder has no hand rail and is about 60 degree angle. There is no way it would be legal in Australia and many other countries. I went to turn on the light for the stairs and it did not work. I then went to plug in my phone charger and the socket was literally hanging out of the wall, which also would not pass any form of safety inspection. The shower/toilet cubicle is tiny with shower in the Onsen area being a better option.
As for the food the breakfast is fairly standard for westerners but the dinners are of a very very poor quality for Japan. This is my fourth trip to Japan so I have eaten at a large variety of places and the food at the North Country Inn is probably the worst I have had. Even food from some of the convenience stores has been better.
The onsen at the hotel is very small and the wi-fi is non-existent in the hotel rooms. To use the wi-fi you need to use a very small lounge area which can be quite crowded so if you want some privacy for a face time conversation then forget it. The bar area upstairs also has wi-fi but can only be accessed after 4 pm.
The staff are very helpful and will help you book a restaurant and have reasonably good english so no complaints there.
If I decide to do another White Room Tour then I will definitely stay elsewhere.
- Arthura33 (8/5): Simple Pleasures and Great Service - Our family of 4 decided to extend our ski trip in Furano after 5 days in a ski resort, lucky we found North Country on the Jalan.net website that features quite a number of hotels/inn/ryokan, the site is in english too. We managed to get a room for with 4 single beds(loft) in the North Country and opt for the "recommended package" that included breakfast and dinner, absolutely no regrets. Our kids(5 &7) loved it, the stairs and loft bedroom was a great deal of fun.The hotel shows the true efficiency of Japan, with just a small front desk providing great service, some of the staff can only speak basic english but they try their very best to help in anything.
Breakfast selection was more than sufficient, dinner was tremendous, very good experience of having different set menu, Furnano Pork hotpot, Cheese Fondue, comes with side dishes like tempura or Potato balls, makes me hungry just thinking about it.
They have coin operated washing machine, dryer(1 each), they will even remove and pack clothes that are in the machines(done) when you need to use them, another example of the service level.
They have an area storage as well as rental of skis if required.
This is not a 5 huge establishment but is extremely charming and with great hospitality, highly recommended. Only point to note is that due to its small size, you do smell what is cooking in the restaurant, in the lobby, hallway but not in the rooms, did not bother us much.
Big fan and will not hesitate to stay here again if back in Furano.
