- sueannelee2026 (10/5): Our wet stay in the Karoo Art Hotel! - Our stay in the Karoo Art Hotel was interesting in that a storm came through and we were totally rained in for a full day with our friends and our golden retriever puppy. The staff looked after us so well, kept the fire alight, served us good coffee, scones, wine, beer and delicious pizzas. We couldn't have asked for more. Barrydale was without power for hours, everything was closed, but the hotel offered a homely atmosphere. Thank you to everyone involved.

- ZBRoyal (10/5): Lovely stay at the Karoo Art Hotel - I attended Donna McKellar’s oil painting landscape workshop at the Hotel. The hotel is wonderful, cosy and quirky with a lovely warm atmosphere. The staff and management were fantastic, very helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Beds very comfortable with electric blankets as it was chilly. Food was delicious! Will definitely be back.

Our room was comfortable but small and showing some signs of wear. As it was street facing, it was quite noisy with sound from the hotel and restaurant across the street. I’d recommend asking for a room that faces the courtyard.

Rooms are beautifully decorated, and one gets welcomed by a hand written note and fresh protea in the room. Clean ,neat and prompt and friendly service. The breakfast was world class! I will definitely recommend the hotel and will be back!

Our chat with Mo in the bar made for top drawer entertainment and knowing that Ronnie comes for a drink when he closes his bar explains the warmth and welcome that you receive when you step into the Karoo Art Hotel. My Karoo Lamb in the restaurant was a wonderful way to end the day and please everyone, when Rik or Wayne offer to drive you in "Moon2" to a wild swim in a spectacular pool on the Trudow Pass with them in the morning, please don't make a mistake and say NO :)

The hotel is amazing covered in local art and lots of nooks to sit and just admire the decor. The staff were lovely and the food was delicious. - Thea (9/5): Character engraved - The staff of this Hotel is the biggest asset. From the check in desk to the bar and the restaurant service. They were great. We arrived in the scorching heat and while checking in my husband already ordered something cold to drink and the bar man eager to help. Their set two or three course meal with options were delicious. The swimming pool on the premises is for sure a plus during the warm summer days. Breakfast was delicious and check out a smooth process. The only down side is that our room had no airconditioner but only ceiling fans.

- VespaChris (10/5): A place full of character and characters - If you ever find yourself trundling through the endless, sun-toasted expanse of the Karoo, where ostriches eye you as if you owe them rent, the Karoo Art Hotel appears like a miraculous mirage—except this mirage comes with gin cocktails and art on the walls. Stepping inside feels rather like falling into the parlour of a particularly eccentric aunt who has inherited a small museum, a theatre troupe, and several mischievous ghosts. The walls are festooned with paintings that appear to have escaped from dreams, while the furniture seems to be engaged in a quiet competition to see which piece can be the most charmingly peculiar. The hotel is a proper explorer’s gem, the sort of place you stumble upon when you are convinced civilisation has abandoned you to the sheep and the starlight. Breakfasts arrive with the zeal of a feast prepared for a hungry safari party, and the locals offer stories so colourful you half expect them to come with subtitles. Wandering the crooked corridors or sipping a drink under the vast, star-punched night sky, one feels wrapped in a kind of whimsical magic—as though the Karoo itself has decided to give you a wink and a nudge, saying, “Well, you’ve found my secret, haven’t you?”

- TheSykes (10/5): Wonderful hotel, Fabulous staff and the Warmest Welcome! - We stumbled on the Karoo Art hotel on our first visit to Barrydale several years ago and what a find. Now we've our holiday home here, it's our first stop. We get such a warm welcome from Mo, Wayne, Gershwin and the rest of the gang. The little pub is just a great place to meet some of the local characters. We've had several great suppers there but the restaurant is excellent too. The coffee shop bakes all day and has the best croissants. We love it. Can't wait to come back. Thanks for the welcome!
- Jeffrey (10/5): A unique experience - We drove over 750 km, specifically in order to stay at this hotel, which we had heard about as a unique experience. We were not disappointed. Restaurant and bar meals truly excellent. Upper story accessible by outside stairs. In return for a wonderful balcony overlooking the main street of the town. Stairs may be a bit of a problem for some, and the choice should somehow be made more clear ahead of booking.
- FloydChorley (8/5): Well worth the stop - This is a very quirky hotel each room is very different. We had one of the larger rooms with a large balcony. The bathroom was fine but the shower cubicle was very tired. The restaurant menu changes daily with some interesting dishes. There are plenty of outdoor sitting places and a good pool.
- Norman (9/5): Very pleasant night stop on any day of the week. - Location, design and decor and mainly the staff who are very interested and willing at all times. Not much really. The ceiling fan in our room, the San room was ineffective but staff supplied a standard fan.
- J8822XSjamess (10/5): A gem of a rural hotel - We had an unexpected treat in finding the Art Hotel in Barrydale. The renovation is outstanding. The rooms are quirky and fun but superbly equipped with coffee and rusks. The bar is welcoming, the pool is a treat after a long drive. We had a balcony looking out to the mountains. We had tea and scones on the patio and a wonderful dinner of Karoo lamb chops. The well-trained staff is attentive and good spirited and knowledgeable. We explored the town on foot and enjoyed the shops (especially the amazing bookstore). Wish we had more than one night for some hiking.
- Adventure04147020188 (8/5): Barrydale Karoo Art Hotel - We had a great stay in 2 rooms at the Hotel. There was a great vibe and great facilities. Breakfast in the morning was also good. Only good times were had and the bar is also great fun.

- Liesl (9/5): Take yourself back in time into an exquisite Art Deco space. A real treat! - Stunning old Art Deco hotel. So beautifully done. Love all the art and the themes in each room. Exceptionally friendly staff! Bar meal and breakfast was very tasty! Very comfortable beds. Small thing - bath room needs a little attention (loose toilet seat) and shower floor is a bit wonky.

- SwampSavhannah (10/5): HEART and ART on Route 62 - What a rare Gem in the 2025 small town of the year!!! If you want homely and personalised hospitality this is the place! Add on amazing food (from the freshly baked deli goods to the spectacular Karoo Lamb), quirky decor, interesting art and incredible staff... One night is not enough!

In my experience, the quality of the food is definitely not as good as before. Presentation is great, but taste is not brilliant. - John (9/5): Unique. Don't miss it. - This is a unique hotel, with individually styled rooms, each with a different theme. The hotel is an old hotel which has been completely revamped, but without losing the original character. Our stay in the Art Hotel was one of the highlights of our trip.. The manager Wayne and his assistant Annika, led from the top and each and every member of staff were welcoming and efficient. I would look forward to staying here again if in the area. There are very few hotels of this kind left anywhere in the world and it is a testament to the owners who have created this jewel. One small matter: I felt that the corkage policy was a little strict, in that you could only avail of your own drinks in the restaurant but not in the bar.

- Graham (9/5): A very enjoyable stay at a charming place in a charming village. - The staff were exceptionally friendly, well-trained and helpful and the manager was very hands-on and present. We went there for its old-world charm and were not disappointed. Very good value for overseas visitors. Really no complaints - any place you go has things that could be better, but there was nothing that could easily have been fixed. It's an old building, and that has its downsides if you're looking for something other than that, but we weren't.

- Regina (9/5): Wir haben uns in dem originell eingerichteten Hotel sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen gerne wieder. - Das Hotel ist originell und witzig eingerichtet, dabei aber harmonisch und gemütlich. Farben und Möbel passen gut zusammen und sorgen für eine entspannte Atmosphäre. Restaurant war unterdurchschnittlich. Dem Vernehmen nach war der Küchenchef ausgefallen.

Kunstwerke und Bücher von lokalen Künstlern und Schriftstellern können im schön dekorierten Empfangsbereich bewundert und erworben werden. Sehr gutes Essen im eigenen Restaurant. Sehr nettes und zuvorkommendes Personal. Das Bad bzw. die Sanitär-Anlagen könnten eine Renovierung vertragen.
