Guest Reviews
- Sharma (3/5): Not good.should be excluded from booking.com - Not good
Not worth No house keeping
No laundry
No one to listen your problem
- Shirley (10/5): Great value for money and convenient location - Ease of check in, support of staff guidance, security of access to hotel. Privacy allowed and provided. Nothing
- Guest (1/5): -
- Thompson (8/5): - It’s location
- Alex (9/5): -
- Andrew (4/5): Not a Hotel, more of a room at the back of a pub with no breakfast facilities. (hostel) - The room was big. access was through a tatty old outside stair case and the room was like a shed built onto of the garage, room was creaky and you could hear everything Fromm anyone coming up the stairs to doors being open on the adjacent room, and when people moved in the room next door the floors creaked very loudly.
- Chris (10/5): Nice place - Easy check in and out. Access is 24 hours. Not a lot of noise even though the bar was busy
- Guest (5/5): Not a hotel as there are no staff on site, but cheap digs with a comfy bed. - My bedroom was clean and the bed was comfortable with clean bedding and pillows. The furniture was otherwise basic, but there was a television and a kitchen area. The ensuite was clean and modern. Located in Jesmond, close to beautiful Jesmond Dene. Not really a hotel - room to let would be better description. Although you sent instructions about how to get into the building if arriving late, it was not at all welcoming to have to let yourself in with a keycode through a back door in a garage where there was not even a sign to say that this was the entrance to the New George Hotel. Fortunately, one of the bar staff from downstairs was leaving as I arrived and was able to reassure me and show me to the key-safes. Quite bizarre having to get your room key from two rows of key-safes on the wall of a dingy corridor. There was a weird musty smell in the corridors and stairwells as I went upstairs, and the Yale lock on my bedroom door did not feel at all secure. From reading reviews, I see that some people have had a terrible stay at the George, and I can see why this happens, as if there is any difficulty with access, plumbing, lighting, security etc, you're on your own and there is no-one to help. I was lucky that all went smoothly for me, but I would be hard pushed to recommend it to anyone.
- Guest (6/5): - Location Only one cup, one towel, no one around
- Krzysztof (4/5): - Very poor room and bathroom
- Allison (4/5): Scary - Location.
My husband in Freeman's hospital so a ten minute uber ride.
Tesco Waitrose Greg's pizza shop close by. This is not a hotel.
It's rooms above a bar.
No receptionist.
No one at all.
Self check in
The bar staff below the accommodation were amazing and helpful.
A woman on her own with no idea how 2 check in contacted owner and helped me to check in.
Key boxes.
Room itself was clean.
Shower freezing.
My ultimate concern as a lone traveller was safety.
Fire escape outside of a large window with no lock.
I felt vulnerable.
If you are on your own I wud not recommend a stay here.
- Matthew (10/5): - Very central to the start line for the GNR.
- Delroy (7/5): It’s perfect if it’s just for work but I wouldn’t take my family to stay - Size of room Wasn’t clean properly under the bed was the worst’s the dust
- Matthew (9/5): - Great Hotel and in a fantastic area of the city
- Jenny (3/5): Hijacked prices for poor conditions - at least the bed was comfy - The bed was clean and comfortable In my room, the windows in the bathroom and bedroom did not close or lock. The toilet cistern ran non stop and the shower taps did too, the bathroom door would not fully close to block it out. The bedroomblind, ceiling and walls were dirty. The microwave was disgusting. There was a bad smell throughout the hotel of mold/damp.
My brothers room above the bar was so noisy the floor vibrated.
- Mark (7/5): - Very good value for money
- Charlene (8/5): - This is me n my hubbies 5th time staying at this great wee hotel. It is only a 20 min walk into the centre and plenty of food, shops n bars all around you.
- Bell (10/5): The room was nice - I didn't have breakfast. I did have a evening meal. It was good. I dint find enay thing wrong.
- Roger (3/5): -

- Guest (8/5): - Lovely spacious room with kettle microwave fridge toiletries tea coffee everything I could want Tv wouldn't work for some channels
Too many stairs not enough cutlery
- P1573GWemilyl (8/5): Will definitely be returning, but a few notes that might help some people. - Me and my sister stayed here from the 2nd to the 4th of August as we were going for a night out in Newcastle and the rooms were fairly priced for a last minute booking. We paid £100 each for 2 nights for our own rooms. There are a few cons about this place (hence the missing point) but wouldn’t stop us returning. We found it a very convenient place to stay, the staff downstairs in the jam jar (seperate business) were lovely, and the rooms were clean. My few cons I have about the place are very minor but are worth mentioning. Upon arrival, we were sent into a panic as we hadn’t been sent confirmation of our booking (although check in was at 3pm and it was around half 3 at this point), but the lovely staff in the jam jar got in contact with the manager and we were assured that he was busy sending out the confirmation texts (with very clear information), so we sat and had a drink and spoke to the lovely gentleman who worked as a bouncer while we waited. We were then told we were staying on the top floor and had instructions on how to get our keys. They have no lift but as two young women, it wasn’t an issue for us carrying our suitcases up the stairs, but I understand that for some people this might be a struggle. We made it to the rooms and realised they were very different amenity wise. While one was fitted with a full kitchen, fridge, dressing table, sofa, and was a lot bigger than the other, the other room was very small, and only had a kettle, a small red bull mini fridge, and a mirror in the bathroom with not the best lighting to get ready in. Again, this wasn’t an issue for us as we were both using each other’s rooms when needed, but I couldn’t get my head around paying the same price for two noticeably, very different rooms. All I would suggest is maybe lowering the price a bit for the rooms that don’t have as many amenity’s as some others.
But other than that, we had a lovely stay and definitely will be returning. It made a nice change from some of the awful hotels we have stayed in before, and we felt very safe both within the hotel and the area :)

- Bethany (10/5): Brilliant stay with super staff and food - Cheap and cheerful - staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food was sensational, hot sauce was amazing!! Bed comfy. Room was value for money. Dirty cupboard with plates and cups ( couple do with just a wipe down)
- Brown_Eyes01 (2/5): Disgusting - The room was disgustingly unclean shower did not drain and was mouldy the room smelled really bad. This is not a hotel there is only a key box to collect keys the room I stayed in was about the parking garage at the back it did not feel safe to stay there I only stayed one night the owner would not respond or refund
- Dean (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gnaneshwar (4/5): Disappointing -
- Wayne (6/5): Pleasant - Don’t expect a Hilton , I booked knowing what time of accommodation it would be . It’s equipped and ideal for work purposes.
I would return .. £35pn is ok
- Georgiana (10/5): Great - Excellent value for money! Private bathroom that’s lovely with bath! Good kitchenette. Velvet curtains. Fan, good furniture, and more! slight sewage smell in bathroom no matter how much I flush, and in hall…and bedside lights didn’t work
- Anonymous (8/5): One night stop over - Area, room large Cramped kitchen
- Beno (9/5): Superb - Never saw any staff as you get sent codes to get to your room you do get telephone number if any problems my room was clean towels and bedding was soft and clean I was happy
- Paul (3/5): Poor -
- Alison (4/5): Cheap & convenient place to sleep for a group of lads on the lash, willing to rough it. There’s covered parking for - The pub underneath was good. Access instructions were good. Bed was comfy. Ours was a cobbled together room above a garage with a wooden, covered outside access. It was a bit smelly.
- Samantha (7/5): Ideal for somewhere to rest your head - The hotel was ideal just for somewhere to sleep after a night out/event, I thought it was a little expensive for what it was. Room could do with a little TLC and the entrance to get into the room, shower leaked at both sides and didn’t drain very quickly, toilet was a little wobbly. Door to the room wasn’t that secure either, Bed was really comfortable (my friend wants to know where the mattress is from haha) Bathroom needed some TLC - shower leaking loads and not draining very quickly
- Liam (7/5): Good - Great place. In a great location
- Anne-katrin (8/5): we enjoyed our stay - rooms were great, small kitchenette in both rooms, parking on the first night was a problem as there are only very few spaces,
but the Holiday Inn a few minutes away offers parking for a small fee.
- Sheena (1/5): NOT a HOTEL disgustingly unclean - There was nothing I liked about the property this is not a hotel as in the name the room I stayed in as above the parking garage. disgustingly unclean mouldy leaky and felt unsafe
- Thompson (9/5): Enjoyable - Excellent stay Nothing
- Jefferson (8/5): Very good - Room size was excellent very clean staff at bar realy helpfull Parking was an issue but couldn't b helped
- Louise (6/5): Staff didn’t say a word to us whole time we were there but the room was great -
- Laurie (8/5): We will reten to this hotel in the future - The room was Clean. The bed was very confortable. The little kitchenette allowed us to store Dairy products and fruit. There was a kitchen and laundry on the main floor. Although no air conditioning, we were able to open a window and had a fan. The bathroom was small but adequate. Locations is perfect. We accessed the Metro, bus, and could walk to local food venues and shops. We will book this hotel again. Air conditioning would have made the room more comfortable
- Steve (6/5): - I'd be happy to tell the hotel about my experience this time, if they want to hear it!
- Rachel (9/5): Brilliant location. Comfortable room. - Very spacious, clean and tidy room. Lovely bathroom. Great location for the Hopping’s funfair and Jesmond park run. Great system with key safe and keys. Nothing.
- Christopher (2/5): Very poor - Very poor communication, still waiting for replies
- Michael (1/5): Absolutely terrible don’t ever book - Was absolutely rubbish didn’t even get the room we booked mattress was like sleeping on a hard floor Everything the best part was leaving the next day
- Delroy (8/5): Would stay again - The price and size of room Dust underneath and around bed
- Peter (1/5): Bad - Location Excessive Noise:
- Room 21 is above the garage with car alarms going off, cars starting up and car doors banging.
- Loud music from the bar into the early hours.
- Loud voices into the early hours, audible despite using earplugs, and closed windows.
Bathroom Poor:
- Cracked tiles
- Rotten skirting boards
- Blocked shower tray
- Hot water tap on basin inoperative
- No basin plug
- Hair in basin waste
ELECTRICAL DANGERS::
- Bathroom Wall mounted light switch loose and possible ELECTROCUTION HAZARD.
- sound of probable sparking from electrical connection when switching on Microwave.
No outlook:
- Window looks onto back of the hotel so requires the blind to be used to have privacy.
- Velux has no view.
This is more like a cheap hostel than hotel:
- No reception.
- Keys left in key box for collection.
On booking.com it stated that there was a £20 damage deposit included in the price which would be refunded, to date this has not been returned.
- Anonymous (1/5): Bad - The room is nice There was no staff around to guide me when i need help
- Rizwan (1/5): Never book this property even if it’s for free.abd booking.com don’t bother about it - Most pathetic n misleading. No water for shower. Smell in room. Uncomfortable mattress. Too noisy
- Brendan (5/5): A low-price, basic place to stay to be close to Jesmond bars - It is a great location for Jesmond attractions, though it may be noisy on a busy night for the bars below.
Had a decent size fridge, microwave, kitchen work surface and sink, if needed for self catering (not much in terms of cutlery or crockery though).
Codes were sent to access property door and room key safe, so I never interacted with anyone except the cleaner in the morning.
Clean enough. On the very top floor so away from potential pub noise (though it was a rainy Monday night, so not many people around anyway). However, with the window open the noise of the industrial extractor fan from the kitchen was quite loud. It did eventually turn off in the night (I had already got to sleep). With the window closed it was quite hot in the room (mild June).
There is no ventilation at all in the en suite shower-toilet (no window, no extractor fan).
Not as well-kept as the photos suggest.
- Tafadzwa (8/5): Very good -
- Rizwan (4/5): We only book this hotel because of it’s room kitchen. - Location and Kitchen facility in room. No Kitchens in room. Too much noisy literally. Lack of parking.
- Rizwan (4/5): Kitchen in room is must for us. - Location Mattress was so bad. No kitchen in room as per pictures. Too much noisy literally
- Patrick (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Emma (7/5): Good - Room clean and spacious. Bathroom had great shower and the complimentary shampoo etc was appreciated. Tea and coffee provided in room also nice touch. Lack of parking.
We didn't receive the directions of how to get the key's as sent via sms and not through the app, so as we had south-africa number it didn't come through. Luckily a lady at the bar assisted us as she knew the owner. If it wasn't for her we would never have gotten the key and would have had to find accommodation elsewhere.
- Richard (7/5): Good -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Cheap and Cheerful - Cheap and cheerful
- Lucy (5/5): housekeeping needs improved but manager of hotel and bar staff are very kind - Lovely bar staff and the communal kitchen is a wonderful idea.
Friendly hotel manager over message housekeeping did not tend to our room before our stay milk cartons with tea amenities had went off and chunky luckily the bar staff helped out on this issue then after cleaning dirty dishes left by previous guests and cleaning out the bath all was well.
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dopli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dopli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keith (8/5): Stay was pleasant local amenities close although local cafe's very expensive - Room was good and spacious plenty of seating. Lock on door was loose and there was only tea bags in kitchenette no coffee, also code given to get back into the premises did not work.
- Ines (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Suraya (8/5): Very good -
- Krystal (7/5): Large room above a busy pub. The pub did shut down at 11 so not a real problem for sleeping. Good location. A little ove - The location is brilliant, in the centre of everything and close to the metro. The room was large. The use of a fridge was really good and we managed to get parking. Could have done with more/better pillows. Some additional cleaning in the bathroom wouldn’t have hurt especially around taps and drain in shower. A table and chairs would be more useful than a desk and a single chair. No coffee in the room. Only one fork. Think it was a little over priced.
- Dixon (6/5): On the whole good value - Room was okay. Bed comfortable and lovely powerful shower with hot water.Bedding very clean. Didn't like the fact only provided with one glass. No coffee. Also no teaspoons . One of the sockets hanging off the wall.Lock on door not secure.
- Sarah (5/5): Passable - Great location Tired dated unclean
- Luke (7/5): Good -
- Clark (10/5): Exceptional -
- O'brien (6/5): Pleasant -
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Greg (1/5): Bad -
- Jenny (6/5): Pleasant -
- Bel (10/5): Exceptional - Another apartment had cancelled my stay after i had driven 2hrs to newcastle. i found this place as a last minute alternative. the room was ready straight away and were so accommodating. i was messaged tons of information which made the stay really easy after a stressful situation with the other place. lovley bar downstairs. everyone i spoke to was extremely helpful. will be staying again.
- Sadiyya (5/5): Passable -
- Donagh (1/5): The property owner was completely unresponsive despite multiple contact attempts, and the rooms are poorly located behin - I attempted to contact the property multiple times through Booking.com, email, and the listed phone number, but received no response on any occasion. There was a complete lack of communication from the property owner, which was extremely frustrating. The rooms are located at the back of a bar that is owned by someone else, and there is no designated reception area, making the check-in process unclear and unprofessional.
- Bobin Joseph (6/5): - Need improvements
- Steven (6/5): Pleasant -
- Andrew (6/5): It was clean and spacious but a bit overpriced. Good location - Room was spacious and clean, we got our car parked in the car park. It was a bit noisy until 11pm but we knew it was above a bar so we expected it.
The room was a bit down at heal, and I think it wasn't worth what we paid for it.
There are better hotels in Newcastle for this price point
- Thompson (7/5): Good -
- Samantha (6/5): Pleasant -
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Natalie (2/5): Very disappointing - The location was OK near to shops bars restaurants etc The room was dirty didn't see any staff to complain too paid 80 pounds for one night for a disgusting filthy room the bed hadn't been changed stains allover the linen. The bathroom was dirty the kitchen and microwave has food all splattered inside of it it's was just awful
- Jazz (1/5): Check your room first!!! - The location . My room was disgusting. Holes in the wall and dirty marks. Dusty lighting, blood on curtains and wall. No standard at all. I would have booked another hotel if I wasnt tired from the day and already paid!!!
- Bell (9/5): Superb -
- zajn2024 (2/5): Very Shabby - I would rate this hotel a 1. The only good thing about the room I had was the bathroom. There were dirty Mark's and blood on the walls.Blood on the curtain and holes in the wall and lightbulbs not dusted. I know it's a budget hotel but certain standards should be met!!!
- Kirsty (10/5): Would definitely recommend and have stayed here 5x+ - AMAZING food, resonably priced and very tasty, had the burger and my partner had quesadilla from jam jar was lush, rooms clean comfy and well ventilated, tv had Netflix and bathroom had a bath so all good, very easy to check in and out and very easy to find Didn’t bother us but oz road is about noisy sometimes, just something to consider on Thursday- Sunday nights, honestly though lovely hotel
- Dopli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gift (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (7/5): Ok public areas a bit grubby - Location Noisy until 11pm
- John-paul (10/5): Everything you need. Perfect. - Convenient location in heart of Jesmond. Plenty of local amenities and easy access to city centre. Rooms are big, comfortable and have everything you need. Some rooms have baths and some shower rooms but I particularly like the rooms with the bath. My only slight thing would be not having coffee in the rooms. Very minor though I’ve stayed many times now and will continue to look for the New George first whenever I am back in the area.
- Katie (10/5): Perfect comforty homely feeling - I stay here quite often and it's the first place I check, price is brilliant and it's just what I need. It's clean and tidy, also it's quiet specially where my hubby has work at 5am definitely will stay there again
- Grahame (8/5): Good basic hotel in great location - Second stay with no complaints. Management were helpful with check in time. Would definitely stay again.
- Natalie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katie (10/5): We have been staying here on and off due to unforeseen circumstances and I will keep going back as Ilike the rooms it - It felt homely, warm and comfortable I can't say a bad word about it
