Guest Reviews
- Julie (8/5): - The evening meal was good . There was a really good choice on the menu.
Every member of staff we came across were friendly and informative.
We had a basic twin bed lodge and it was perfect for our needs. It was clean and had everything we needed for our 1 night stay. The only disappointment was the breakfast. There was a strange selection of hot food and only white bread available.
- Ludovica (8/5): - The quite location, the pool and the silence surrounding it
- Victoria (8/5): -
- Kelly (8/5): Authentic rainforest accommodation - The property was a great location with a hike located on site and walking distance (10 mins) to the Sepilok attractions like the orangutans and sun bears.
We saw a few macaques and squirrels on the property. Wifi is only available at the common area and not in your rooms which is minor however may impact some travellers.
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Corrie Conder (8/5): - Pool and restaurant area are lovely. The bathrooms in the bunk house were cleaned regularly but the smell from the drains was really unpleasant. You can smell them from the beds with the bathroom door closed.
- Sarah (8/5): - Sehr schön gelegen mit viel Natur
Super Pool
- Gordon (10/5): - Wonderful luxury lodge in great location, set in fantastic jungle surrounds. The pool was a welcome treat in the heat. The restaurant offers good selection of meals. Breakfast was good. The Lodge was well equipped. Ours had WiFi, though this isn't standard I believe. Our outside bathroom was interesting with little birds visiting to admire themselves in the mirror.
There were lots of nice touches, Scrabble and Chess boards, insect spray and toiletries.
Our Lodge had air-conditioning.
It is around 15 minutes walk to the Orangutan and Sun Bear conservation centres.
The hotel can arrange currency exchange but charges 15%.
The hotel can arrange taxi transfer to the airport. We paid 60 Malay dollar one way.
We loved this place. What a great find. One of our group woke around 6am to see a monkey on the path outside the lodge window. Superb! Not sure if it was communication difficulties, but food and drink orders were never quite right. Nothing major - and staff always put right after.
- Sharon Andy (7/5): Great stay - Location Location
- Lisa (8/5): - Amazing location, great breakfast, pool is nice No AC in the dorm and as far as I could tell nobody cleaned the bathroom while I was there (hair on the floor/in the Sink, overflowing trashbin)
- Pieter (8/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): It was lovely and relaxing but the food overpriced and not that good. - Beautiful location and the cabins were great. Ours overlooked the beautiful forest. We had a monkey and lots of squirrels in the trees. It was very relaxing and a short ride to everything. There is zero gluten free options. This is so disappointing considering the restaurant down the road uses tapioca flour for some dishes and other Malaysian restaurants we went to use rice flour. It’s not that hard! The drain in the shower kept blocking, even after the staff fixed it. The staff are lovely but there is very little training. They don’t know much about anything. Not the reception staff nor the restaurant staff. They couldn’t answer simple questions and they had no idea about price for local attractions. They stood around in the restaurant and talked to each other instead of using initiative to fill the breakfast Bain Marie’s. We were on limited time in the mornings and the food was not enough especially when you don’t eat gluten and the eggs are not topped up nor the beans, salad and watermelon. This is not good enough - the staff all live in Sepilok.
- Thorsten (8/5): -
- Seraina Mirjam (10/5): - Tolle Lage!
- Emerald (8/5): - Great location, easy to get grabs, lovely pool, delicious food, awesome jungle walk at the back of the property Average service, some communication breakdowns with staff, only a few lounges by the pool otherwise nothing
- Johanne (9/5): - In a beautiful forest setting less than 1km from the Orangutan Rehabilitation and small bear resort.
- Ville Niemelä (10/5): Nice pool and beautiful chalet! Excellent! - Nice pool, beer available, relaxing surrounding and beautiful chalet! Excellent!
- Susanna (10/5): -
- Avril (6/5): Great pool and location, but the dorm rooms need updating - Great poll, restaurant staff were fabulous. The ensuite bathroom in my dormitory had not been cleaned as there beard shavings all over the sink. No air conditioning in the dorm rooms
- andreas (10/5): - very nice hotel, pool and restaurant ! excellent food
- Dharmendra (9/5): -
- Grit (10/5): - Die Lage und die Anlage
- Silvia (8/5): -
- Lena (8/5): Sehr schönes Hotel mit schöner Anlage nahe zu Orangutan und Sunbear Conservation - - Lage zum Orang Utan und Sunbear Conservation
- rustikale, urige aber saubere Zimmer
- sehr schöne Anlage
- super freundliches Personal
- Marcus (10/5): -
- Graham (9/5): -
- Storm (8/5): -
- Audrey (8/5): Pleasant stay and convenient location for visiting the orang utans and sun bears - Nicely appointed villas with private balconies to appreciate the forest and the fauna. Food was pretty good, although a little expensive. Nice forest trail in the back. It is about a 15-min walk to the orang utans & sun bears conservation centres - but can be pretty exhausting in the heat. Although the reception staff were friendly, I found their advice not particularly clear and a little conflicting with our experience - with regarding to getting the most of our limited time to see the orang utans and sun bears. In the end, we just made our own decisions based on the opening hours of the Centers, and had a great experience doing the orang utans in the afternoon of our arrival and the sun bears the next morning before our departure to Kinabatangan.
I was also a little perturbed to hear that there have been repeat occurrences of thefts from the room, as the lodge had emphasised via email, and also required us to sign a liability waiver to absolve them from responsibility for any loss.
- Anna (10/5): Very nice stay, thank you ! - Lovely staff, great pool, nice food. Memorable setting.
- Paul (7/5): Nice stay overall, probably better for a short stay - Staff excellent service and very friendly. Food good. Bar and restaurant area clean and in wonderful surroundings. Location very good for the conservation areas - orangutan and sun bears. A short walk but can be a bit difficult with humidity, so use the Grab app if you need a ride. Room was very small and bathroom facilities were quite basic. Would probably not be comfortable for more than one night.
- Gillian (10/5): Beautiful Borneo; Forest Edge surpassed my expectations- wish I had stayed longer x - Beautiful, quiet, communal areas inviting and peaceful, super location. Excellent value for money- I stayed in a mixed four bed ‘dorm’ with shared toilet: shower and had access to all communal facilities which made this fell like a luxury stay. 10 minutes walk from Orangutan and Bear Sanctuary; 30 mins from Discovery Centre ( I did the night walk then went back for my last morning and was lucky to see to hornbills and an orangutan). I took Grab to and from airport (26 mins) and for a day stopping at the caves then onto the river - 2 hr drive . River boat was 4 hours of absolute joy- like a conveyer belt of animals within touching distance. Breakfast was included too and was buffet style and varied to suit all tastes. I ate most meals there too, all delicious and beautifully presented. Lovely staff to boot. Nothing; I hope to return with my family.
- Pratik (7/5): Great location and helpful staff - - great location
- helpful staff - basic breakfast
- could do with better cleaning
- Callum (8/5): Loved it, could just do with a bit of polish - It was very good value for what it was. Lovely resort set in the jungle. The restaurant was an excellent place to eat and just to chill. The staff were very friendly Dorm room was warm on top bunk even with fans. Pillow was hard. Bathroom was quite shabby. Could do with more vegetarian options in the menu!
- Kristina (10/5): Beautiful lodge in the forest - - Beautiful surroundings, right in the jungle.
- Friendly staff, Cherry was particularly helpful
- Great evening meals in the restaurant
- 15/20 minute walk to the orangutan and sunbear sanctuaries
- newly refurbished pool
- Explore the nature walk around the resort, we didn’t spot any wild orangutan but other guests did during our stay - breakfast could be improved, limited options and coffee often cold
- Deirdre (9/5): -
- ML AL (9/5): - Had Queen bedroom, was full equipped and quiet. Great outdoor restaurant under roof in tropical garden. 10-15 min walk to Sepilok Orang Uta Rehab Center on the dirt road in the heat, just be aware of it if you are less fit. Was no problem for us
.
- Kelly (10/5): Amazing Stay. We loved exploring Sepilok and there is plenty to do, see and eat within walking distance. - Beautiful property surrounded by nature. The property has a nice little pool, restaurant, and a forest trail. I liked that it was walkable to attractions and restaurants.
- Lisa (10/5): Absolute gem of a place … literally 10/15 walk to Orangutan park. - Absolutely beautiful resort. Dip in the pool was most welcome after hot, humid day. Food was excellent and just a lovely, welcoming feel to the resort.
- JEAN (7/5): Beautiful tranquil setting with friendly staff, tasty breakfast & value for money. - The location of the property was great & it was easy to walk to see the orangutans & sunbears. The staff were friendly & helpful. The pool was idyllic & surrounded by beautiful gardens. The buffet breakfast was plentiful & tasty. Definitely value for money. We stayed in a dorm room & there was no shampoo or body wash, although when we asked the staff were happy to provide the items. No other complaints.
- Kirstie (8/5): -
- Elisabeth (9/5): -
- Nerijus (9/5): - Puiki vieta , praleist kelias naktis!!! Galetu pusryciai buti gausesni ;)
- Jane (9/5): Quiet location close to the Orangutans - Quiet location on the edge of the forest, lovely restaurant with good choice of food
- Aditya (8/5): We had a great stay and would definitely recommend it for a short visit to sepilok - The location was superb, walking distance to the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. Pool was nice. The restaurant was quite expensive for what it was. It was also chaotic and staff seemed stressed
- Janet (8/5): Lovely location within walking distance to all locations. - Location and surroundings Food was average
- Kathleen (8/5): -
- Ester (9/5): - Very beautiful place. Comfortable beds. Outdoor shower was a great extra surprise. (There is an indoor shower too) Staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant has games and entertainment for children. We all loved it. Would be good with some kind of night lamp in the cabins. We had two cabins and had the ceiling light on in both cabins during the nights.
- Lee (10/5): - Everything, from the minute I walked in to the minute I left
- Edwards (10/5): -
- Paul (7/5): Very nice overall - Located in the middle of a beautiful nature. The dorm room is very hot, not ventilated enough.
- C6UVellenm (6/5): Lovely setting and with some improvements could be amazing - Resort in middle of jungle not far from the orangutan and sun bear sanctuaries. Lodge was quite a walk from reception, uphill and very uneven particularly as it was pouring down the day we arrived and it was rather slippery. Lodge was ok - bed comfortable but very high so needed to be careful when getting up in the night. Bathroom in need of renovation. On arrival our room wasn't ready so we were shown to the restaurant to wait and have a welcome drink and they would fetch us when the room was ready. After waiting for over an hour we went to check what was happening and clearly they had forgotten us. At dinner that evening the service was extremely slow - don't know how they manage when it is busy - although the food was reasonable. When we went to pay for the drinks, they were charging us for the meal and some drinks that we did not have - we were on half board basis. |Took them ages to work out what to do but eventually we were only charged for what we had. Bit disappointing. Breakfast was limited - suprised that there was no bread. All in all could do better.
- John (9/5): Atmospheric well run lodge ten minutes walk to orangs. - The clean wooden chalets perched on hill sides overlooking and amongst forest very atmospheric. Bathrooms very basic and the quirky sinks not very practical but shower OK and always hot water. Beds comfortable. Breakfast in open restaurant overlooking forest good. Cook toast on bbq. Staff very friendly, efficient and helpful. Have their own forest walk but don't get lost - not well kept. Takes ten minutes to walk to bear and orang utan sanctuary and 20 minutes to forest reserve. We saw orang on walking down road from lodge! WiFi only in communal area - Recommend having local sim card. If visiting rainy season watch out for leeches! Quirky bathroom sinks not very practical and the outside shower total waste of time and unnecessary. Meals and drinks quite expensive. Cafe at next door lodge five minutes down road (take torch) better menu and cheaper.
- Christina (9/5): Comfort in incredible nature - Excellent location in walking distance of orangutans, sun bears, and rainforest centres. Our large cabin was spotless and comfortable. We had a rental car that we parked easily on site. It made it easier to see the wider area on our own timelines. Note: The restaurant closes by 10 and we had to get our orders in much earlier.
- Renate (9/5): - Die Lage ist wunderschön.
- David (5/5): -
- Anthony (10/5): Parfait ! - Le lieu, confort et personnel ! Ras
- Julia (8/5): -
- Burgess (10/5): - Fabulous place in the heart of the rainforest
Accommodation was clean and comfortable lots of wildlife around you in there natural habitat
Restaurant served good food and staff friendly and attentive. Walking distance to orangutan sanctuary and sun bears. Highly recommend Nothing
- mikecB885FS (10/5): Pleasant Stay - Pleasant 3 nights at this resort on the edge of Sepilok. Stayed in the Tip of Borneo lodge which is a short but hilly walk from the central common area. Our lodge was comfortable with effective air con and private balcony looking out over the jungly grounds. Shower was a bit iffy, but passable.
Grounds are very scenic with plenty of birdlife and 2 orangutans visited one afternoon!
Common area is a great place to sit, meals are ok, although service variable!
You need to be reasonably mobile to stay here, as the paths between the accommodation and the common area are very up and down. You will also need to transport to reach the orangutan rehab centre, which is about a mile away, unless you are keen on walking in the humidity.
- amanda (8/5): Beautiful surroundings immersed in nature. - Beautiful surroundings AND we saw an Orangutan in the grounds. Lovely friendly staff.
- James (7/5): -
- Hans-Peter (10/5): - Traumhaft. Wer natur liebt ist hier richtig
Das zimmerupgrade war der absolute hit. Nichts
- Lisbet Steen (10/5): -
- Elaine (10/5): Great place to stay within walking distance to the orangutans and sun bears. - Loved the cabin, the bed was very comfy. The food was great too. Nothing to add
- jen (7/5): Great location great food and plunge pool definitely worth a visit - Brilliant location 15 min walk from orangutans sanctuary and sun bears, 30 mins from nature discovery centre. Restaurant food great and reasonable cost. Rooms basic but have air on and fridge.great plunge pool to cool off Bathroom needs updating and deep clean hot water worked but plug did not in bath no hot shower
Spa facilities available but only realised as leaving.
We received a message saying card only payment from Feb 26 arrived in March and deposit needed to be cash and bar option card or cash so very confusing
- Joanne (10/5): - Beautiful surroundings- stunning! clean rooms, lovely staff and restaurant Nothing
- Stefano (10/5): -
- Francesca (10/5): - Great location close to activities
Spacious rooms
Good shower
- Nadine (10/5): Excellent! I would definitely come back! - The place is beautiful and well taken care of!
I was especially grateful to Jessica who helped me immensely when I mixed up my dates and booking
She was fantastic and patient!
The plunge pool was clean as were the rooms and restaurant
In regard to the reviews about the restaurant being expensive, yes it is, but the food is very very good! There are options close by that people can walk to so it’s a choice you can make.
The breakfast was excellent, with a diverse array of choices It was all good
- Parnika (10/5): A great place to get over our overnight flight exhaustion. The resort has a great forest trail and a very relaxing vibe. - It was a great place to start our Borneo adventure - short distance from Sandakan airport with great animal, bird, and reptile sighting in their campus itself. The dorms are really well designed. The food is quite good even if you are a vegetarian. Our dorm’s washbasin didn’t have water.
- Lisa (10/5): Sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal -
- reynolds (9/5): Very enjoyable and we would definitely come again. The staff are wonderful x - Breakfast good and plentiful, food at dinner nice, but quite expensive overall. Restaurant very pleasant and enjoyable, staff very friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. No WiFi in the room but to be expected as in the jungle and the experience was amazing. The drink at the resort is quite expensive.
- louisac751 (10/5): Great stay - Stayed here for 2 nights whilst we went to the anima sanctuaries. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Good sized room with good air con. Nice and clean, large comfy beds. Food at the hotel was good, would recommend the lamb curry.
- nicky (9/5): Would highly recommend. It is a great jungle setting but close enough to walk to the orangutans. - Brilliant setting. Walkable to orangutan centre and sun bears. Very peaceful. Staff were very smiley and friendly and helpful. Great that the pool was open after a refurb. Not much! But cushions on the sun loungers would have been good!
- Jane (7/5): when finished it could be a good place to stay - breakfast poor, Loved the dinner but small choice but very expensive they didnt explain the swimming pool was not open, and the other very small pool they offered was a long walk and far from the accomadation. Also a lot of building work going on
- Norah (7/5): Authentic Experience - I thought it was what I expected - It was a jungle lodge with all that goes with that - Bugs etc :-) great friendly staff and average food. Breakfast was a bit poor - not much there.
- kelvin (10/5): - Perfect position for visiting all the area has to offer. Very helpful staff Wifi could be a bit more reliable.
- Nicolla (10/5): Location, staff, comfort all 5 stars - Friendly staff, great location, wonderful
Place to just chill. Water in room never really hit that hot. But as it’s so humid it really wasn’t a problem.
- Andrea (10/5): Above and beyond expectations here! - This was one of the best places I’ve ever stayed at! For a basic stay in a dorm for one night I had my expectations low, but I was blown away by the cleanliness, the beauty, convenience and friendliness of the staff! I couldn’t recommend this place more!
- Jane (9/5): Relaxing and Enjoyable close to Orangutans and Sunbears with friendly helpful staff - Great location, with a relaxed atmosphere
- Lahra (10/5): - Stunning! Brilliant location, beautiful resort, great breakfast
- chris (9/5): Had an excellent 3 days here - Excellent breakfast and restaurant All the staff were helpful and friendly Everything was good but pool area was unavailable
- Nicolla (9/5): Fabulous jungle resort! - Very friendly, clean, fabulous location in the jungle, breakfast area chilled vibe. Rooms were fabulous. Clean and a wonderful jungle rustic feel to the whole place All good if I had to nit pick, bigger variety of breakfast but it was still good.
