Guest Reviews
- Heilika (10/5): - The woman who checked me in was very nice. The price is reasonable, and the room wS very clean. I will go back here. You can tell the owners take pride and care about the place
- Deborah (8/5): - Quaint hotel. Well cared for. Looks they they are trying to update amenities on a limited budget
- Janice (10/5): - Just here for the night. Very basic but all we needed was a bed and the bed is comfortable. Could not get the TV to come on, we like to get the evening news before turning in so we do not even know what channels it gets
- Kenneth (6/5): - I've stayed in a lot of hotels and it is usually the little things that make or break it for me. Just to be clear...this was a very clean hotel with a very reasonable price. Now Oberlin, KS is by no means anywhere anyone would go on vacation. It's mostly hunters that stay in this area and it's perfect for what we are looking for. There is little to no dining options in the town. My biggest complaint would be the fact that the rooms had recently been updated....I could tell this from fresh paint, new carpet, tile, and linens. The door had a hole for a dead bolt, which would have been nice, but it was covered up with duct tape instead. Overall a nice place to stay, just don't plan on having ANYTHING to do unless you are a hunter.
- Gordon (8/5): - Primary concern would be the quality of the door lock. Other than that, we were happy with our stay.
- Bruce (8/5): - Clean. Good price.
- Brandy (10/5): - Was perfect for a quick overnight stay
- Kenneth (6/5): - A room for the night. Mission accomplished.
- Tylar (10/5): - Own was very kind and rooms were clean
- Jonathan (10/5): Find a way to stay here - Spotless and friendly. You get far more than you pay for here, and you'll feel good supporting a really friendly host. We drove out of our way and are super glad we did.
- Starlina (10/5): - Great staff
- Nancy (10/5): Nice Motel - Nice single story old motel. Remolded bathroom. Fridge and microwave and coffee a plus! Mattress was okay but could stand to be replaced. Had a nice arm chair to sit and read. I would have enjoyed a floor lamp. Been here 2 years ago and will stay again when in the area
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Good place
- Heilika (10/5): - Its a hidden gem . The laundry was right across from my room which made it very easy. The bed was comfortable , and the room was very clean. It was a refreshing change from some other motels.
The owner/manager did everything: checked people, fixed broken equipment and cleaned the rooms. He was always available
- Iurii (10/5): - Smells good, clean, quiet!! That’s what I needed after long motorcycle ride 👍👍👍
- robbinf314 (10/5): Pleasant Suprise - The staff were super friendly. Rooms were really clean and beds very comfortable. I love finding out of the way places to stay and will definitely add this one to my list!! Shower had super hot water with plenty of towels!! As always read the reviews and just don’t look at the pictures!!!!
- Ned (8/5): - For the best rate you MUST book online otherwise the rate is significantly higher. Nice reasonable highway 36 option.
- Rachel (10/5): - It was absolutely amazing. Peaceful. The property owners were fantastic
- Henry (8/5): - Sometimes you get what you pay for, but in this case the accommodations are much better than the price. If you are on a budget it is great.
- Robert (10/5): Recommended, clean, quiet, and convenient. - Room was clean, staff was professional and courteous. Everything worked including wifi. Bed was clean and comfortable. I will stay again if near in future. Would definitely recommend. Very nice place.
- Patty (10/5): - They have unique gardens. New caroet in our room. Very clean and updated
- james (6/5): Decent lower budget option - Check-in went surprisingly well, considering the desk clerk spoke absolutely no english. However, quickly called someone to translate and it went very efficiently. Room feels recently spruced up but room is dated. I felt i was in a clean, safe, inexpensive motel ans it was much nicer than similar ventage places.
- Shaelyn (8/5): - The owner will have you pay the difference of the “deal” you’re getting on travel sites. It’s not that much more and it’s understandable.
- Kevin (10/5): - The room was refreshed, apparently not long ago, and was very clean. A great value that far exceeded expectation.
- John (8/5): It’s a very nice place - The rooms are very nice. Parking is right outside your door which makes it nice to bring things in. The people are very friendly. They have a awesome coffee machine that I liked. Anything bad that I have to say is I went to the office one time and ring the bell, but nobody came, but other than that, it’s a nice place to stay
- Victoria (10/5): - Very clean and friendly
- Alcinda (10/5): Good room good price - Clean rooms very friendly people inexpensive
- Elizabeth (2/5): - As I pulled through the very tight and secluded parking lot to my room, kids on bikes seemed to disappear inside motel room(s). The seclusion of the parking lot made me feel unsafe. When I opened the door to my hotel, a large crack on the door made it evident the door had been broken into before. The door had 3 locks (handle, deadbolt, and chain). The room was stale and hot and synthetic fragrances were overwhelming. The lower parts of the furniture appeared to not ever be cleaned as I wiped off a layer of very old dust with the disinfectant wipes I carry. I never even sat down in the room, as I couldn’t see myself being able to relax and sleep there. I decided to pay for another hotel instead of staying here. I didn’t feel safe here, and the cleanliness wasn’t to my standards.
- Micky (8/5): - Reasonably priced and quiet. The staff is friendly and welcoming! Older facility but nicely maintained and very clean.
Great place for the budget minded.
- Deana (8/5): Just Right - Very cool older hotel. Rooms were nice and clean and the bed was comfortable. What more do you really need?
- Kacee (10/5): - Check in was quick and easy, I’ve stayed places like the Sofitel etc in Chicago and I appreciated the clean, nice and cool room. Bathroom was updated, I liked the colors compared to the stale colors most use, parking by your door and the actual ability to open a window for fresh air. We drove for 9 hours and slept well. GREAT value for your money and pet friendly. Cute little town with the general small town staple stores and a really good authentic restaurant. Will definitely be staying on my way to Denver again!
- Andrea (10/5): - We love the convenience and budget price of this little gem of a hotel. We've always had friendly staff, 3rd time staying. The quad room is the best deal ever!! Dog Friendly at a very reasonable price with nice, big grassy area to walk them. Best in town for us!!
- Shari (8/5): - The owner was very nice and friendly. The hotel is an older place, but the rooms are nice.
- Marlene (8/5): Quaint little town - This hotel was good for an overnight stay. It was clean and very quiet as only 2 cars on the grounds. Manager was nice.
- Jim (2/5): Never again… - This is the worse place we have ever stayed in. The heater didn’t warm the room/bathroom or us efficiently. The tv was fuzzy and wifi didn’t work. The coffee was horrid. Definitely not worth the money!
- Heather (8/5): Clean and simple - We were stuck in a winter storm on our way to Denver, needed a few hours of sleep before we could go any further. It’s not fancy and the beds aren’t super comfy but it was clean, had some modern features in bathroom and was a good place to lay our heads for a few hours. I would stay again if going through the area.
- Robert (6/5): - The sheets were ruff, the bathtub was clean but the floor of tub was bubbling up, no coffee , and tv didn’t work .
Place was clean just not fully functioning
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean and comfortable - Louis and his wife could not have been more accommodating and friendly.
Property has been renovated so even though it is an older property it was clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Right for the price - This is an old building but well maintained. The air conditioner couldn’t keep up and we had to plunge the toilet twice. But was right for the price and a single night.
- Robert (4/5): - Bathroom rundown. Windows very dirty.
- Christi (10/5): Nice motel - This motel is a Gem in a small. Would recommend it to anyone. Very clean and friendly.
- ann (10/5): - I loved this little hotel. It’s been remodeled and they did a great job. Great price for a a one night stay.
- Archie (10/5): - It was clean and comfortable at a reasonable price. Provides hair dryer, microwave and fridge.
- Andrea (8/5): - Great little hotel at a great price with parking a few feet from your door. Pet fee only $15 for the stay (not per day) with nice grassy area to take them out. Friendly staff, restaurant on site, easy walking distance to other rooms, nice covered outdoor sitting area with grill, sink, etc...
- Jensina (10/5): - Great pricing. Really cozy
- Jensina (10/5): - Very clean and cozy. Affordable pricing
- Niki (8/5): - Great little family run motel. A little dated but very clean, comfortable, and pleasant. Family owned and operated, be try pleasant and helpful staff.
- Jeff (10/5): - Like. I requested some things be fixed and they were tended to promptly. The room was clean and comfortable. I actually spent time sleeping, which doesn't often happen in a strange motel.
Bad: The room was icy cold when I got there. It took awhile for it to warm up. The toilet didn't flush when I arrived. See good comments.
- Patricia (10/5): - Clean. Front desk friendly
- Victoria (10/5): - Cleanest room I’ve ever had
- Charlie (10/5): - An acceptable motel for an overnight stay, clean room and bed, the location of the room heater hindered it's effectiveness.
- Levi (8/5): - .
- William (10/5): - The Frontier was great. Spacious room with very comfortable beds. The owners went out of their way to take care of us. They were sprucing the place with new paint.
- Karen (8/5): - Great price for an older hotel. Very clean. Nice staff. Soft beds.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location and views. - Convenient downtown location with beautiful mountain views. Close to shopping, dining, and ski resorts.
Unfortunately, no breakfast is served.
- Diane (8/5): Nicely refurbished - This little place was a gem. Our room was refurbished nicely, especially the bathroom. We wished we’d have gone into the room when we first checked in to start the air conditioner, because once we did go in, it took a while to cool off. Other than that, it was a nice stay.
- D6551XDpatricke (8/5): A cheap cool room in the hot wastes of kansas - I was thrilled to get a room for 50 bucks. Great service albeit limited. Room was clean, cool A/C…had good wifi, tv, coffee. A quiet no nonsense motel. …I needed some rest and got it here for less than half what the chains charge. Locally owned family business.
- 68kevanj (10/5): Great buget hotel. - This is a great hotel for budget travelers like us. It is cheap, very clean, smells good, and the beds are nice. Our room (no. 6) had a refrigerator. The proprietors are super nice...a Spanish speaking family who recently purchased the hotel. The woman spoke no English but her daughter filled in all the gaps. SUPER NICE! We had booked it on line and apparently the booking company got things wrong but the nice folks accommodated us and gave us the rates offered on line with no problems. I would definitely stay here again. Highly recommended for budget travelers.
- TBRTH4444 (10/5): Very hospitable , and they look out for their guests. - When I went to go to my room one of the other guest was shirtless, drunk, and hostile. When they saw what was going on they took control of the situation and moved me to a different room. Despite being put in a two bed room from a one bed room they did not charge me for the change. Despite the unruly guest that got to spend a night in the drunk tank, they made me feel safe and made sure I was comfortable. I couldn't recommend this motel more.
- nelliez2014 (10/5): With load and ran out of light - This gave me all I needed, plus a coffee pot in the room. I don't look for much past clean room, hot shower and comfortable bed, this provided all those. Check in fast quick, staff was friendly and helpful.
Checkout was lock door and drop key in box at office.
- Dale (6/5): - The heater and ac unit was not able to control. Shut it off and would get cold. Turn it on was very loud. It had no low speed or no way to keep it on. So on, off all night long. No extra blankets to help.
- KERRY (8/5): - a
- keith (8/5): - quiet nice and very affordable
- Christopher (10/5): - All of the hotel
- Mark (10/5): - Very nicely maintained and very clean! Thank you!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very disappointed with my experience with this hotel. The room was NOT clean and smelled really funky! The shower head didn’t even reach my chest and the mirror in the bathroom is meant for a giant. The icing on the cake was when I was checking out. I had a friend helping me get my bags out of the room and his dog stepped foot in the room for literally a minute (the dog was not staying at the hotel). The front desk lady and her mother I’m assuming ran outside and started yelling across the parking lot that I now owed her a pet fee! Your much better off spending a few more dollars and staying down the road. BEWARE!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The bathroom had been remodeled. There were stains on the chair in the room, and the complimentary lotion in the bathroom had been used
- Janice (10/5): Stay here and you won't be sorry!!! - The lady at the desk was so sweet and when she realized two of us had recently had surgery she walked all the way to our room to offer us the handicamp room. She tried to make sure we were well taken care of. The room was so clean and had recently been updated. It was very nice and we will stay here again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great price, clean and convenient parking right outside your door.
- Robert (8/5): 3star - Comfortable
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room was clean, staff was nice but the bed was horrible, so hard!!!!
- James (8/5): - It appears that many things in the room were new and updated. Very good value for the money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - very old no frills motel but was clean and everything worked. It would be nice to have a lamp in the room . the only light was ceiling light.

- J2185DZmarkw (10/5): Mark,Iowa - The wife and I enjoyed our over night stay. Clean, well kept room. The folks running the place were friendly. In reading some of the negative posts about this motel, I find it hard to believe they are about the folks that are in charge now. And yes, the sign outside town says there is a pool but it has been filled in, but we stayed at a big chain motel in McCook, Nebraska that hadn't changed it's sign from the previous owner. Takes time to change signs, maybe? We had a nice breakfast in the adjoining restaurant, which to us was a big plus.
- 872jennifer (10/5): Best so far - This is the best place to be spent a night when you are travelling we stayed here for 2 nights beds are very comfortable rooms are nice and clean great services from the owner affordable price then other hotels in town the best till date i stayed here
- flsd101 (6/5): Older motel - Older motel with out front parking - definitely nothing fancy but clean. We travel with pets, so a fair priced motel that allowed dogs was nice. Unfamiliar with area of town, but felt pretty safe while walking dogs.
- janeymae110 (4/5): Not a good experience - First of all, we telephoned about an hour from the place and were quoted one price and when we arrived we were charged $10 more for the room. There is no WIFI. The A/C iced up and stopped during the night, even though we followed the instructions and turned it to a lower than recommended (higher temperature) setting. The hot water in the shower was just a drizzle. The shower head was high enough (barely) for me at 5'1", but my 6'4" husband couldn't use it. There was no hair dryer . . . had thought that was standard these days. There was a medium-sized dead roach on the bathroom floor when we checked in. At least it was dead. On the plus side, the sheets seemed to be clean.
- Billitto (10/5): Nice motel in quiet town - Stayed here to see eclipse up north in Nebraska. Very pleased with the clean, comfortable room and loved the restaurant up front. Everyone friendly and considerate. Only problem is that I put on 2 pounds, but that is life. If you visit walk a few blocks downtown for a break from driving. You can even see a movie or go bowling.
- sandyb363 (8/5): Clean old fashioned motor court! - We like being able to park right in front of our room. We like clean and quiet places. We like a restaurant right next door. This place has all that and at very reasonable price. Don't be put off by the woman who answers the phone - she's not mean, just shy and her English is not her first language ! She'll tell you to book online, so just do that.
- fine2723 (10/5): best place in small town - i have been in this place second time over 3 years. they did lot of improvement by the time. nice clean rooms friendly service. newly remodeled rooms. overall it was a nice stay at frontier motel with the best rate in town.
- jhawkfan13 (2/5): Worst Stay ever - If I could've rated this hotel less than a zero I would had this is the second time in five years that we have had to stay at this motel in Oberlin Kansas is due to a family funeral. As if the first time five years ago wasn't bad enough when I got E. coli poisoning from the salad bar, this time the room was not only not clean it also had no toilet paper no tissues, and the in room phone didn't work in order to call the office to ask for the supplies. You might ask why I would go back and stay at the same place that I got sick five years ago? Well, when you lose a family member unexpectedly and you have to schedule a place to stay on short notice, this happened to be the only place with open reservations, which now I understand why.
The beds are hard the pillows are flat and there was no hot water for a shower. I'd like to say that Sunday I will look back on this experience as well as my previous experience and laugh but I doubt it sincerely.
- leorak243 (8/5): Road trip - Very friendly service. The room was large, clean, quite and comfortable.
The front door was worn but did not affect our stay. Woke up to a cool morning with a beautiful sunrise. Took a walk in the immediate area. The restaurant next door fulfilled all our needs. Very friendly and helpful.
- andreapG180CR (2/5): Cold.... - We stayed here due to a family function....when I told my cousin we were staying here she said, oh you should have stayed at the other motel. I found out when I checked in why she said that. The couple who owns it can not speak much English and are not very friendly. I had booked two rooms and they had us separated as far as we could be even though we were the only ones at the whole motel. The rooms were FREEZING cold when we got to them and the heater took all night to warm it up. There were only enough towels for one person, and they were not very good. Will not stay here EVER again! Will definitely stay at the "other one" when go back to see my family again!
- KarenG170 (4/5): don't stay here - It was once a friendly small town motel with a restaurant much frequented by locals - same leasee of restaurant or 17 years. She is ready to quit. Motel now purchased by orientals and being run into the ground. The front desk person is surly and could not care less. When we blew a breaker in the room he was pretty nasty demanding to know what we had plugged in. He offered no assistance at all when we ended up stuck in slush and ice. A local tire person came over and pulled us out. We were two couples renting two rooms. The rooms needed upgrading no doubt when he bought but it is totally bandaided together and the face cloths and towels were threadbare and grey, much like the complimentary rags offered by some places. And he charges a pretty heft price for what you get. We would not have stayed if it hadn't been the only place and getting late. Save your money and keep going .....
- kat260 (2/5): Horrible do not use. - The room itself is dated but large. The beds are very old and need replaced. We were there during a snow storm and very cold the heater did not work and we had to use blankets from our car to keep warm they did not have any extra in the room. The heater was also extremely noisy you won't get any sleep. We did not get any housekeeping the motel said we had our do not disturb sign up which is untrue. They had no problem going in the room while we were gone to turn on the heater that barely worked so we came back to a cold room that was not cleaned. The shower was dirty and they gave you one towel that looked like they cleaned the room with it and folded it back up. The staff is very rude and not helpful at all. We booked through Booking.com which was also no help when we brought the issues to their attention they put the blame on the property and did not help their customer GUESS I LOSE on both fronts.. Do not book this hotel through booking.com or stay at this property you will be sorely disappointed on both accounts.
- bradm796 (2/5): OMG don't stay here! - Our visit in this motel was necessitated because of late night travel. It was a hot July night and the air conditioner froze up, the tv reception was poor and we were unable to get an internet connection.
It was clean, but the beds were old and sagged.
The male receptionist was rude and spoke very little English. The owner/operators of this motel were not a tune to the way we do business in the US.
Although they said they allow pets we were billed an extra $100 the next day even though there was no damage to the room. I was able to fight this with my credit card company, but with a hassle.
There was no pool as described in the listing.
Do yourself a favor and move on to the next motel. There is one about 5 miles down the road on HWY 36.
- CathyR0b (10/5): Clean, comfortable and friendly - Our 3-day stay at the Frontier Motel on highway 36 in Oberlin, Kansas was very comfortable. The very spacious rooms are dated, but comfortable, well maintained and well supplied. All of our needs and requests were met by Sharyn, the manager, and by her cleaning staff. The attached cafe was convenient and very good (see separate review for the Frontier Cafe in Oberlin, KS). Being from out of the area, I was happy to see a Tornado Shelter at the motel. The in-ground pool has been closed and filled in with dirt, so the highway billboard west of town is inaccurate in that regard. Parking for cars, trucks as well as RVs is available. I was surprised to see the size of this motel as it has almost 50 rooms. Many of them filled up each night. The Frontier is a friendly place to stop if you are in northwestern Kansas on Hwy. 36.
- horribleexperience49 (2/5): Read before you waste your $ Review dated 8/11/12 - Due to lack of rooms available at any other hotels in town, we decided to try the Frontier. This was a terrible decision for our family.
We wasted money on two rooms. Both rooms were in horrible condition, wholes in the ceiling, tiles falling off the walls, and smelled horrible. In the first room, we had the option of the "bouncy bed" or the "rock hard" bed. The stained bedding smelled horrible and was tattered. Thankfully we had extra blankets in our car that we used.
The TV was snowy in one room and overly bright in the other room. I left the TV on all night in hopes that the bugs didn't crawl around due to the light. The carpeted floors were so filthy and stained that my daughter's feet were black and had to be washed after walking across the room.
The air conditioner temperature could not be adjusted. (I tried in the middle of the night and the room started to smell like something was burning.)
The tub was very old and stained. The hot water handle was scalding hot. I just left the water running in between 3 showers because it was too hard to regulate the water temperature. The shower was so low that I had to kneel to wash my hair.
The parking was inadequate and my automobile was basically at risk of being hit by other cars.
The pool was a cheap backyard 3 foot pool that one would purchase from Walmart. The pool that is advertised in full of green slime.
Basically, I wasted $ and got absolutely no sleep. I contemplated checking out and driving 30 miles to the next town, but had a family obligation which caused me to tough it out. Next time, I will sleep in my car before I ever attempt to stay there again.
The food at the restaurant was inedible. I will be reporting the safety and health concerns to the State. I also plan to see about canceling my credit card payment, not sure if I can or not.
Please do yourself and loved ones a favor and keep on driving. Do not stop at this place.
