Guest Reviews
- Katharine (10/5): - What a treat staying in a castle. Rooms very spactious, bathroom was large. Dining room was amazing. Food was wonderful. Worth the experience.
- Richard (8/5): An exceptional historical place to stay! - Wonderful chateau with great views and atmosphere. Large, comfortable, bedroom. Dinner rather disappointing with rather amateur service. Very good breakfast.
- Vaida (10/5): - Perfect place!
- Graham (10/5): - A stunning location way beyond expectations, excellent staff, incredible food, a real treat.
- jason (10/5): Wow what a lovely château, lovely superb setting - Superb chateau, ok breakfast could have had a cooked option (like scrambled eggs), lovely location for the view and peacefulness. We had the tower room which was lovely, lush sitting outside looking at the views or at the chateau.
Fine dining but im a bit fussy with my food.
- sharon (10/5): - Just a beautiful and quiet chateau. Impeccably clean. We stayed in the nuptial suite and enjoyed the view from the sitting area in the turret.
Dinner and breakfast were well done. The grounds had lilacs in flower and fragrant tulip trees.
- Greg (4/5): Hattonchatel - Very quirky lovely old chateau, but that is where the fun stops. Check in almost impossible, you are made to feel very unwelcome, hard to get in past the big locked steel gates.
Parking abysmal, in a muddy field outside locked property no good for low sportscars, damaged my front splitter trying to get off road, owner not interested one bit.
Service terrible, food choice terrible, very dusty old and tired, would not stay again.
- george (10/5): - Very inexpensive for such a nice place
- Kaye (4/5): Wouldn’t recommend - Dead bugs all over the window sills in the room. Bathroom was in hallway outside of room. Above the room was a private residence with young men running up and down the stairs outside the room until well after midnight. No help from staff when bell was rung at the entry gate. Complex key did not work. Was allowed to bring our dog but it could not enter the restaurant areas. Yet a cat was allowed to roam around the dining room.
- mary (10/5): - A lovely, special place. Highly recommend
- Clayton (10/5): - Beautiful property in a beautiful area. Close to Verdun and the American Cemetery
- Pat (10/5): Awesome place. Awesome Location. - This was my second time staying at the Hattonchatel Chateau. It was as good as it always is.
I got to see a full moon rise one night and got up early to see the sunrise.
- Patricia (10/5): - Beautiful Chateaux in a lovely setting. Staff incredibly friendly & helpful. Restaurant was excellent, ate in there 3 nights out of 5 and the Staff went above & beyond to change the menu to ensure we had a different gastronomic delight each time.
- George (8/5): - Great property with history, wonderful hill top setting.
- Haluk (6/5): Awesome Breakfast - Hotel is an old hotel needs redecoration .
Breakfast was awesome
- Dessislava (10/5): Superb experience - Beautiful and extremely well managed place full of history and character, amazing rooms, top of the world bathrooms, creme de la creme restaurant… thank you so much, I look forward to be back!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good but certainly not perfect - Very good diner, but pricey. We found a hair in the bed and in one of the drawers there was an empty chocolate wrap. The Cleanroom lady did not do her job right.
Also the room, especially the combined shower and toileteoom was smelly. That night be because of the old castle charm, but I cannot call this 'clean'.
Overall score a 9-...
- Dessislava (10/5): Truly unforgettable - Superb experience with fantastic caring hosts Fabienne and Cloe. Best end of my time out of UK I could dream of! So pleased they also accepted my dog and allowed him freedom. The night colours of the chateaux were extraordinary. Thank you so much!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fabulous! - Wonderful stay! Loved every minute and above all the restaurant which deserves a mention of its own as now you do not have to be a guest in hotel to eat there. Creative fine dining.
- Ryan (10/5): Wow - Wow what an amazing place, paid for a room upgrade and felt like a king
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We stayed during mid September 2019. A bit out of way, but well worth the extra miles to stay in a wonderful old French Chateau. We visited Verdun, Ww1 sites, and positioned ourselves for the drive to Paris airport for a late afternoon flight. The dinner my wife and I split with amazing wines was well worth the $45 euros each. The staff were extremely accomodative even looking up our flight check in terminal and numbered line to secure our checked luggage and boarding passes. Great photos of exterior and interior, views from hill top beautiful and included breakfast a steal. Susan and Gene
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We arrived late but were welcomed in. The dinner in the great hall was a great experience. Its like dining in the set from games of thrones.
The castle is an amazing place to stay and looks great dsy or night.
The management were super helpful. The rooms we stayed in were basic. No kettle fridge or bins but the beds were comfy and rooms clean. Overall it was a great experience. Thank you Alin and Fabien.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing location and property. Rooms are very basic.
But its not evey day you get to stay in a legit castle.
- Verified traveler (10/5): The chateau experience! - What a different experience! Fabian (manager) runs everything (and is run off his feet). Lovely vintage style rooms (with modern bathrooms) in a castle like setting in a tiny village. Easy 40 minute drive to Verdun battlefield areas. NO services in the village! It's a 5 minute drive to town for gas or groceries. 1.8 km away - if you're tempted to walk it, it would be 1.8 km up STEEP hills to get back.
We had the multicourse dinner - expensive, but worth it. Plan on a full evening for this (3 hrs or so). Fabian serves this, too.
We extended our stay an extra night and had to change rooms. Some trouble with WiFi in that room on one of our devices. Some small maintenance issues too - no privacy drapes and couldn't close sheers, some bathroom peeling paint. There was maintenance staff consistently working the grounds.
A bargain - stay in a castle for little more than a chain hotel - but remember you're staying in an ancient building (no A/C). Pay attention when booking - some packages include the continental breakfast, some don't.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Unique property with great views. It has a storied past and dinner in the great hall with the fireplace roaring was special.
- Vince (10/5): An unexpected delight. - From the moment that we arrived Fabian, the manager, provided us with a warm welcome and made us feel very comfortable. The room was large and comfortable; we enjoyed a tasty evening meal which was provided as a set menu, with drinks, in an amazing dining hall with a huge fire burning. The breakfast was on a buffet basis and enjoyable.
All in all an excellent stay which we would hope to repeat.
- Douglas (10/5): Hattonchatel - We throughly enjoyed our one night stay at the Hattonchatel! The hotel staff provided premier assistance, and the history provided the Chatel was informative and insightful. A fairy tale like castle with an incredible view off the surrounding valleys was very memorable, and we look forward to returning again in the future.
- Pat (10/5): Unbelievable Place - Wow. What a place! This place was awesome. The view was awesome. It would be great place for a romantic getaway or honeymoon. We had dinner on the wall watched a glorious sunrise and had an awesome inexpensive hot breakfast prepared by Aline and we were on our way. Too bad we didn’t get to stay longer.
- leslie (10/5): WWI history personified - Big room, amazing staff, modern bath. Make sure to reserve dinner. Fabian is a great chef. The dining room is so old world with a huge fire burning and candelabras burning at each table. Old world charm at every corner. We we’re more than happy with our 3 night stay. Fabian is a wealth of info concerning WWI sights. We did them all!
- BillPatten (10/5): - You hear stories of excellent customer service. This one is the best of my life (67 years). Fabien, General Manager, went above and beyond. I had scheduled a centennial trip to the American Cemetery at Romagne-sous-Montfaucon to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of my great uncle in World War I (Oct 10th, 1918). The problem was that I was unable to coordinate travel from Chateau Hattonchatel to the Cemetery from the U.S. And, it didn't get better upon arrival in France. Fabien agreed to drive us there on the morning of Oct 10th. The drive was more than one hour each way. No way to truly thank him for the effort to make this centennial trip work out for us.
- Bill (8/5): - Superb setting magnificent building charming staff disappointing food A packaged experience
- Werner (10/5): Real Chateau full of history, very romantic. - If you want a hotel room with all mod cons - this is not for you. But if you want to experience real French hospitality and excellent French cuisine in a romantic, quirky historic castle, with spiral stairs, creaking floors, enormous candle-lit vaulted dining-hall, on an elevated setting overlooking the surrounding countryside, then make a detour to Hattonchatel - you will not regret it! Don't forget to book for the set dinner - it is well worth it.
- Kitty (10/5): - Beautifully restored chateau with gorgeous dining room/5 course meal offered. Food and wine pairings were delicious. Hotel is in a remote location but totally worth the drive.
- Elaine (10/5): Absolutely fabulous - Absolutely fabulous. Amazing place, would stay again & again & again.......
- Andrew (10/5): - Everything about this place was so worth it. It was honestly the highlight of our three-week trip around Europe. Treat yourself to the dinner served on site; at 75 euros it was the best meal I've had of my life!
- Walter (10/5): Close to World War One battle fields. - An amazing Château good food and in a lovely village.
- Lisa (10/5): - Gorgeous property. Relaxing, well-maintained, and friendly staff.
Be prepared to pay cash as our cards didn't work (only location with this problem).
- Janet (10/5): Loved this hotel! - A fabulous start to our short break in Alsace. Amazing hotel/chateau with super views. Room was small but clean and comfortable. Did lack curtains though. The meal at 75€ turned out to be very good value when you got 5 courses, 2 aperitifs and 2 bottles of wine. The food was delicious too. So glad we decided to go for it. Fabien was so friendly and relaxed and tried to speak in every language in the dining room. There’s no need to dress up for dinner either.
- Tim (10/5): Beautiful chateaux - Eat in, its well worth it.
- Marima (10/5): - Place to visit
- Geoffrey (8/5): - Location is good if visiting Verdun. We were disappointed with the special meal. The service seemed rushed at times and the food was over cooked.
- Dawn (10/5): A great experience - A fantastic place to end our holiday. We booked last minute and were so please we did. The experience of the evening meal is not to be missed. Sitting in the Grand hall with the roaring fire was so relaxing. The gardens were lovely to sit in. We booked a suite expecting two rooms plus a bathroom and were initially disappointed as this was not the case. However for a little extra we upgraded to the Bridal suite which was two rooms with wonderful views. The manager and his wife were excellent .
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful location, the most amazing building,
- Great dining experience, very attentive staff, incredible location. We will be staying again - and again.
- Yelena (10/5): Fabian makes all the difference - - Fabian was a great host and we were happy to stay here again. We really enjoy just walking around the upper village and the chateau grounds. Looking forward to next time.
- Steven (10/5): Fit for a king - Great experience. Comfortable stay in castle. A five star experience for 3 star price. Felt like part of family. Host went above and beyond consistently.
- Larry (10/5): Outstanding stay in a castle with a SUPERB Dinner - Outstanding stay in a castle with a SUPERB - TRULY French dinner - worth every Euro - Stayed in the Bridal Suite with its own private bathroom - for us it was worth the extra cost.
Fabien is a superb Host AND Chef!!! The dinner is absolutely to die for - don’t stay at this beautiful castle
Without also booking dinner reservations - the two are a must hand in hand for a complete experience!
Tres Bien!!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice place, great view, lousy administration - This is a nice hotel in a beautiful location. However, beware:
1) when they say there are no restaurants around them they are correct. One pizzeria in town and it's not open every day
2) This place is tough to find
3) Between the hotel and expedia they screwed up the payment. Card was supposed to be charged prior to arriving. Apparently card was not charges. Hotel thinks we left without paying! It was resolved but not without a lot effort.
4) There is no one there around the clock. House keeping was marginal at best.
- Jennifer (10/5): Breathtaking - We had a wonderful stay at the castle! It was a breathtaking view and lovely accommodations!
- andre (10/5): Real chateau hotel - We stayed for 2 nights and had dinner on the first night; it was some experience and good value at €75pp including all wines and service. ( even at current exchange rates) the food was awesome, although it's a set choice so best to check the menu first to see if it suits your tastes for us it was perfect. Scallops Duck and chocolate fondant. Our room was a little small, and we had no view, but that's pretty common when booking with Expedia, we never get a decent room. The staff were freiedly and helpful and the library lounge was a luxury. Great base for exploring the battlefields and memorials from the battle of Verdun. Literally 5km and you're on the route of the trenches. Fabian gave us a super map to help us. Breakfast is included and it's a pretty basic affair but there's a fab boulangerie in the local village for picnic lunches before heading out
- Verified traveler (10/5): Gem near Verdun - Fabulous!! The Chateau is beautiful, friendly, interesting and the dinner was fantastic! Fabian and his wife Anita are terrific.
The dinner makes the whole stay magical.
- Yelena (10/5): Real castle full of charm! - This is a real castle with gates, grounds, stonework. It sits up on a hill with beautiful views, the room was quiet, clean, well decorated, with a great bathroom. Fabian, the castle Gard, helped us to our room and gave us a tour. The free breakfast was really fantastic with eggs made to order. We had tea in the library and took pictures in the great dining hall. Wish we had more time to walk around and explore
- Linda (10/5): Dream location! - We wish we could have stayed here all week! This would be a honeymooner's dream location! A comfortable stay in a historic location. Breakfast was included. We made a reservation for the dinner which was a great experience in elegance and delicious taste! The price was comparable to medium-priced chain hotels. Very friendly staff.
- Gregory (10/5): Amazing Castle Getaway - Absolutely amazing building, location, and vibe. Location is also great for visiting Verdun. Do not miss dinner - it's really something else. Delicious and great value.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful chateau, warm welcome - Beautiful chateau, sensitively restored and maintained. Very warm welcome and history of the place given by the caretaker on arrival. Delicious continental breakfast in cosy surroundings, available till 11am. The chateau sits in prime position at the highest point in the region, which results in spectacular views from the grounds. It's a short drive to Lac de Madine and the WWI memorial sites of St Mihiel and Verdun.
- Steve (10/5): A jewel of a place to stay! - What can I say other than we truly did not want to leave. The hotel is beautiful. The staff is friendly and this is the best value we have ever had in France. We will return! Absolutely wonderful place!
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful. Peaceful. Great hosts. - Overnight stop at end of touring holiday. My husband certainly saved the best till last!!!!!!
- John (10/5): Top hotel near to historica WW1 sites - Short stay to visit rhe area with WW1 anniversaries in mind. Great welcome and plenty of information provided on the history of the Chateau and the locality. A quiet location but easily found.
- Anna (10/5): Chateau perfection - Quaint and charming castle which aims for authenticity. The building is beautiful, the setting superb and Fabian, the manager, is helpful and enthusiastic. I will happily stay here again!
- Ingrid (10/5): Breathtaking - Really out of the ordinary! The most romantic and beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in. Just breathtaking.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very unique experience, not typical hotel stay! - Offers a very unique and extremely fascinating history starting in 859 and key part of WWI. The caretaker Fabian exurberantly tells the story and welcomes you to this private home. Miles from any large city on a huge piece of land where you can see for 50 km on a clear day. The rooms are a bit older, not a modern hotel experience, but the unique enjoyment of a place like this makes up for it!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fabulous! - We were greeted by the very friendly manager, Fabian, who gave us a complete tour and history of the place, and offered us the option to upgrade our room as we were the only guests staying that evening. We opted to stay in the tower room we had booked and loved it - lovely, winding staircase to get to our room and great views out of the large windows. Breakfast in the morning was beautifully laid out and delicious (cold cuts, cheeses, croissants, toast etc, and plenty of hot coffee and juice). If we are ever back in the area, we would absolutely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Gorgeous and Welcoming - My boyfriend and I had an amazing time. The castle was gorgeous with an amazing view. We ordered the dinner and we were pleased if was delicious with a romantic environment. I would love to come back.
- Sandra (6/5): - Lovely exterior, not so nice inside. There were no public areas to relax or have a drink. Our room was a decent size in a turret, but was very dated and tired. The bathroom was subpar with broken and stained tiles.
- Larry (10/5): Great va!ue beautiful Chateau - Excellent relaxing accommodation in a very beautiful FRENCH CHATEAU IN A QUIET LITTLE VILLAGE. The CHateau has only six units so one feels extra special using the library or dining room.It is cosy great for a quiet visit and would be perfect for holding a business or labour negotiation session.
It is also perfect for a small personal wedding or honeymoon.
Highly recommended. Staff speak French and English, the breakfast lady was FRENCH Canadian from Montreal and perfect for local FRENCH and English language visitors.
- Brock (10/5): Just Beautiful - What an incredible place! Highly recommend staying here!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Hotel - Great views and a lot of history. Certainly one of a kind. We had to pay 30 euros more to get a private bathroom. This is not mentioned anywhere so get ready to pay unless you want to share with someone. There's not much around so it's a great place to stay if you want peace and quiet.
- chris (10/5): - It was wonderful. Very friendly and helpful people. We stayed in one of the towers. The rooms and bathroom were very clean. Very private and beautiful inside the walls of the chateau. The chateau was amazing inside. Breakfast was good
- Eric (10/5): Amazing Setting - Beautiful building and setting. It was a pleasure to stay here. You are left a little bit on your own, but hey! It's a castle. I couldn't decide whether I'd rather visit it again in love or as an 8 yr old boy. Staff was helpful and very friendly. Situated in a lovely little village. Do it!
- Andrey (10/5): Back in time with some luxury comfort! - That was a solo trip. I realized that instead of staying in a regular hotel, I could stay in some rural one. That was a right move!
- David (10/5): Romantic chateau - A wonderful historic spot with charming rooms, library and recreational space in lovely grounds, a splendid view and a brilliant breakfast too - what more could you ask for?
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fairytale chateau - Fairytale chateau with breathtaking views. Wonderful experience. Best hotel wifi yet!!!
Welcoming staff, like a big happy family.
- Daryl (10/5): Who needs TV here? - What can one say? This place is utterly fantastic. Not only is it very beautiful & romantic but there is a mass of history concerning the place and the local area. It has to be one of the best places to stay, especially for a wedding or romantic anniversary.
The outside of the place immediately, blew us away, but as we were led us inside to our room in the main house our host explained the various rooms on the way, the huge dining room (OMG), the breakfast room (WOW), the lounge (best for wi-fi) & the fact that the place didn’t have any TV. Who needs TV when you have such a fantastic place to enjoy? Our room & bathroom was luxurious, very clean and beautifully decorated & furnished.
Dinner was held in a huge vaulted room, with large mirrors & huge fireplace, with log fire, all of which would have looked good in a Harry Potter film. Dinner was to be a sumptuous 6 course & 4 bottle affair. As each course or bottle was served our host explained each in detail, as well as imparting somethings about the history of the Chateau.
Breakfast in the morning was in another room, much smaller that the dining room, but equally well furnished. It was a fabulous feast, worthy of this high class Chateau. We had a fantastic time, even though our stay had been short, & agreed that this was certainly a place we would like to return to.
- Justin (10/5): Hard to find, but worth the journey! - 3 bis Rue Du Chateau, 55210 Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel, France. Trying to find this place at night was difficult with a GPS. Hopefully the above address is closer than the one listed on the website. The castle is gorgeous and we stayed in the tower. A full bath was adjacent to the room. The view from the courtyard are amazing. All of the furniture is antique and the main area has comfortable seats and wifi. It's a great mix between b&b, hostel and royalty.
- Bill (8/5): Quiet Retreat - The hotel is away from everything and is quiet and charming. We were there during a bit of a cold snap and the heat was not on so it was just a bit chilly. Other than that is was a nice stay. The staff was very accomodating and helpful.
