Guest Reviews
- Kelly (10/5): - Super dog friendly, beautiful lobby living room with fireplace, yummy breakfast. Right in the heart of town. So charming! Will be back!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - My favorite place in all the world!
- Kaitlin (8/5): Fun - They were very nice. The rooms do smell older and the hotel is very noisy. Lots of dogs which is great if you love dogs like me. Old bathrooms. Location is amazing and it’s a cool building
- Verified traveler (8/5): great location, a little dated - Cypress Inn offers great location, and it is so fun to see all the dogs with their humans. Love the living room fireplace. Rooms are a little small (expected for 1920's property) but bathrooms could use some updating.
- paul (10/5): - We had a wonderful time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A friendly boutique gem of a hotel for people and their daughter dogs. Extremely charming. As if stepped into an earlier era.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff were most helpful with all questions and needs.
we originally intended to bring our pet, but did not. Most people with their pets were very considerate of those around them. The food was excellent, the rooms comfortable and nicely appointed. We will definitely stay again when in Carmel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful little property, right off the main street of Carmel. Has very nice courtyard area where breakfast is served, can get other meals or drinks there too
- CarmelVisitor (10/5): - Great location. Rooms dated-old but clean (except hair on bath tub drain. Room only heated by old fashion steam radiator.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I think this property needs some work on its appearance. You need to educate yourself on the rooms. there is a clear difference in noise level, access for the dogs (which are MANY), access to lobby, etc.
I could hear every whisper and word from the adjacent first floor room to the extent that I left my first room and went to the lobby for quiet. Next day they forgot to tell me they were removing and installing carpeting in the adjacent room. overall a weird hotel experience and was looking for a quiet few days in Carmel.
great location however
- Chelsea (10/5): Great for Humans and Dogs - We've had lunch and drinks here before, but always wanted to stay because they're dog friendly - so we brought our dog! The whole staff is friendly and accommodating, it was a great trip.
- Michelle (10/5): A Real Jewel - Charming boutique hotel in a great location. Iconic bar with well made cocktails by Mary, who has been bartending for 28 years at the Terri's Lounge in the Hotel. Cozy fireplace room with plenty of seating for reading and having a cocktail or coffee. Pet friendly and you just might make a little furry friend.
Very comfortable rooms. No air conditioning and a little noisy on the first floor rooms. Paid hotel parking or on Street parking. Did I mention a great location?❤️
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It would be helpful if when making a reservation a disabled person (mobile) could be sure of also getting one of the few Inn private parking spaces.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Love that Cypress Inn is dog friendly. Staff were very nice. I needed a refrigerator for the room because I make my dog's food. They were also very nice about heating it up for me in the bar. I think the rooms need to be updated considering the cost of a standard room but they were very clean. My only issue was the complimentary breakfast. If you have a dog, you are not able to easily access the food which is behind the bar. No dogs are allowed. I had to ask people to watch/hold my dog so I could go back and get the food.
- John (6/5): Room and bathroom were tiny and we had asked for a - Room and bathroom were tiny and we had asked for a fireplace and of course did not get one.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - You feel like you are part of the Dog Family by the time you leave. Very laid back hotel with a place in Carmel history.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good service and clean and dog friendly. Love love it!
- Christina (10/5): - Great location, friendly & helpful staff. Beautiful hotel.
- Samantha (10/5): Wonderful Christmas stay! - Wonderful one night stay. Christmas time is very special at cypress inn. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Breakfast was included and was absolutely delicious!
- jirge (4/5): Needs to upgrade rooms - Very uncomfortable beds and rooms space very tight, and on the top of that very noisy, they need to sound proof the rooms, parking space also a big issue basically street parking only very hard to find a space. The Restaurant, housekeeping and location excellent. Costumer service is ok.
- mike (10/5): Will come aback - We enjoyed this hotel very much, nice ambience and staff. Rooms are a little dated but considering the age of the building in pretty good condition. We will be back in love their dog friendly atmosphere.
- Denny (10/5): Worth the Stay - The Cypress Inn has so much charm and was such a wonderful stay with my daughter. The staff were very friendly and we also had a nice conversation with some of the locals. The dog friendliness of the hotel was a great experience even though we didn't have a dog. The breakfast provided was wonderful. We can't wait to go again.
- Denise (4/5): - Room was hot couldn't turn off the pilot light on the fireplace, bathtub Jett's didn't work, Shade did not open in bathroom. They gave me a good rate however they did not not make comp or adjust my bill accordingly. The manger just only apologize
- Karl (10/5): - Everybody has dogs--fun, rather than annoying.
Very old school, boutique like place. I would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Quaint hotel within a short walk to restaurants an - Cozy hotel in the middle of Carmel. Great ambiance. The bar is very nice and the food is good . The rooms are a bit dated and could use a face lift, but the best of Carmel is not in the room anyway and the beds are comfortable to sleep in .
- Verified traveler (8/5): The Heart of Carmel - Very relaxing, beautiful hotel and VERY dog friendly!
- Verified traveler (4/5): too Noisey - Our room overlooked the restaurant terrace and in order to get any air we had to open the windows...then we heard everyone's conversations until 11 pm. Not a restful night! Plus in the morning when we went to have our complimentary breakfast the wait staff was a bit surly! Unless I had a dog, I wouldn't stay there again!
- Susie (10/5): Great stay - Loved everything
Clean, comfortable, oozing with history of Doris Day
- MICHAEL B (8/5): If you love dogs and Doris Day! - Stately, quirky turn of the century Inn in beautiful Carmel, the Cyprus was the creative production of Doris Day. There is music in the large parlor many evenings and the restaurant is top notch. But the really memorable features include, well, the memorabilia and, of course, all those dogs! As to the former, there are posters - lots of them - educating those of us not in the know about DD's filmography, which is quite extensive, not to mention her recording career and other achievements. And then the dogs. The inn is famously dog-friendly. You'd think this would have a downside, walking around English setters and golden-doodles on the way to cocktails, but one quickly gets used to this and they are very handsome animals. (There's no written rule, but no mongrels were seen.) The only negative for us was that our room was adjacent to a sidewalk where late night revelers would walk. It felt like they were in our room. Do avoid these end rooms.
- Karen (10/5): No tub and very low water pressure - Loved the Cypress Inn. Street parking can be challenging because of the 3-hour limit on all spaces two-three blocks surrounding the hotel. Dogs are welcome and add a great ambiance to the place - if you are a dog lover. Lovely breakfast each day, lovely lobby with live music each night, attentive staff, restaurant on site. Flat screen TV in the bar that does show some sports but most show Doris Day movies so if you are a big sports fan you may need to find a local bar to catch your favorite game.
- Kim (10/5): A Top place to stay - A Great place to visit and a great hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Room dark but otherwise lovely - Room without many windows
Dark
Great bed and linens
Super clean
- James (6/5): Hotel is very over rated - Hotel is very over rated. Even though we reserved an upgraded room through Hotels.com we got a terrible room. Bathroom was tiny and horrible. Basically no parking on site. Had to park 8 blocks away one night and walk to hotel.
- Wesley (10/5): Room 204 is great - Very convienient; staff is excellent particularly at front desk
- bernard (4/5): Charming but very noisy and dog oriented. - Great breakfasts. Charming hotel.
Rooms allocated to "internet" bookers are extremely noisy and close to food smells. Our room is also across from the toilets, and people from the bar are using them and very loud. We tried every day to change our room, but we're told they couldn't because we booked this on Hotels.com.
Also, parking lot is extremely small and we could not find a spot in four days. Street parking is limited to two hours during the day, 7 days a week. So, we had to constantly juggle our parking space. Dogs are welcome and everywhere - in the lounge, hallways, rooms. We are ok with dogs, and they are much quieter than most of the people.
hotel is charming, but has significant drawbacks.
- Verified traveler (6/5): No place for those with allergies - There were more dogs than humans in the building. There was no parking or valet or concierge or room service or AC. The carpet and bathroom were very dated and the walls were very thin.
- Mark (8/5): Classic boutique - Great hotel within walking distance to the main area, Ocean Avenue, and the beach. Hotel decor has images of classic movies as well as decorations from the owner's ( Doris Day) son's world travel.
Great room. Inclusive breakfast was also good. It would be a 5 star in the rating system if it had a pool.
Stay there!!
- Beverly (10/5): Delightful stay - After reading some of the negative reviews I was a bit skeptical regarding our two night stay. We had an absolutely wonderful stay. The animals and animal lovers made for a warm, friendly and incredibly loving environment. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend the stay. The breakfast was scrumptious!
- Patrick (10/5): - Great service!! Randy @ Front Desk was exceptional. Morning server was also outstanding
- Thomas (10/5): - Spent two nights at the Cypress Inn with our dachshund. Had a great experience.
- JRM & FJN (10/5): - Wonderful, pet-friendly environment with gobs of charm. Staff was profoundly friendly, solicitous and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Luxury hotel - wonderful very relaxing and they thought of all the little details EXCEPT they should not advertise parking as they did not have any and we arrived on a rainy night and had to search for parking.
- john (2/5): Old hotel - My wife and I had the misfortune to stay at Cypress Inn, our room had no window and no fresh air, no air conditioning. While it is in a good position it is old, no elevator and in my opinion should be pulled down and a modern hotel built in line with current building regulations.
- Cristiane (10/5): If you like animals- dog! Perfect place! - So nice stay at these hotel! Location and é friendly!
- Beth (8/5): COZY, great stop to get to Big Sur - We landed into the Cypress pretty late in the afternoon, and it was rocking and fully Christmas fabulous! After sorting out our hotels reservation, we went up to a very simple, nice, small room. We had a great deal, and were okay with the square footage. The hotel is very cool, owned by Doris Day, and full of nooks and crannies.
We didn't really know what the Carmel-by-the-Sea vibe was/is....and we felt like the youngsters, which is fine. It was a place to stay as we cruised to hiking in Big Sur.
We are Portlanders and love the cozy vibe of our city, and have found Cali to be a bit hard to connect with. Nobody rude, just a unique and different culture.
I was reading a bit about CBTS (carmelbythesea) and it sounds like at one point it was bohemian, and it is a lovely destination for food and shopping but we are definitely more bohemian, good with cozy, real, down to earth, so not our scene but once again a great place to lay our heads.
The continental breakfast is awesome, and coffee solid. Would not most likely visit CBTS again, but would recommend this place to folks who can appreciate a historical place, don't mind taking luggage up a few stairs if able, and those with dogs!
The staff here was the cuddliest in Cali so far, and very attentive, felt like they were really talking to me.
- DLR (10/5): Cali coast trip - night 1 - Wonderful little inn with charm and interesting back story...
- Dr J L T (10/5): Old world charm, close to everything. - A very charming hotel, a relaxed but elegant vibe. Breakfast was excellent as is the staff ( Randy ) and the location. We have been there before and will go again.
- Dbldips (8/5): Pets Abound - A busy, classy little hotel. Lots of places to sit and relax, active bar pouring classic cocktails. Our room was not that comfortable we found that we needed to have the window open for ventilation but we were right above the kitchen! Loud until the kitchen closed-oh well we survived but know what to ask about the next time!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location.. - Cypress Hotel is a beautiful hotel. So dog friendly, however I would not recommend a room with windows overlooking the patio very loud.
- Mariajose (10/5): Cute Boutique hotel - Lovely, friendly and pet friendly! loved it!
