Guest Reviews
- Segun (8/5): Pleasant experience overall. Friendly staff. Good facilities- Gym and swimming pool. Great breakfast too. - Friendly reception Room cleaning was not done completely
- Patty (8/5): -
- Kristyna (9/5): It was a good place to stay - It is in a good location. It was very clean. Staff was decent. The lights under the bed
- Donald (10/5): Socializing with the other guest at the pool - The front desk , personnel were very helpful , courteous and polite.
They made it very exciting to be there and full of advice. The swimming pool was closed , that was the main reason I stayed there.
Last time I had a great experience with other people staying at the best western .
They agree that it's one of the best places they have stayed .
3 other couples that were staying there.
It was a bummer the pool was closed , I didn't get a chance to visit.
- Lorrie (6/5): -
- Sandra (10/5): -
- Yeilin (10/5): -
- Tammy (1/5): Will not go again - The location was close to our conference The rooms were dirty. People were loud. Our key was set to stop working on the day after we got there with a two day stay
- Wendy (5/5): It was okay. - Staff at check in were great!! 2nd shift staff around 9:45pm we not very helpful they weren't at the desk didn't answer the phone when called multiple times. Toilet paper was almost gone when we checked it, which isn't horrible but we did run out.
- Michael (10/5): - The staff was excellent Nothing
- Courtney (10/5): -
- Sean (6/5): Nice room, not impressed with staff - Located close to Outlets and Restaurants Clothing was stolen from our room. Nothing was done about it.
- Jordan (8/5): -
- Latwania (10/5): Great - The room was very clean and the staff were very nice and helpful.
- Diane (9/5): All in all it was very good! - Breakfast was good, had a lot of variety. We had to put a deposit for the room, never had to do this before. We paid by credit card so why require a deposit.
- Marilyn (7/5): - Bed was comfortable but too high! The breakfast was lacking, didn't have what they said they were serving.
- brianhM1269FE (6/5): Best Western Altoona, Iowa. - There's a reading light on the left side of the headboard that is being held in by electrical tape and has the lit end covered with electrical tape so as to be unusable, which fell out and hit my wife in the middle of the night. Thankfully, no injury other than the scare. The lower lighting on the bed has wiring hanging at the footboard area on both sides. The body wash bottle in the shower was empty, and the shampoo bottle nearly so, not discovered until I was in the shower and all wet. I had a bar of soap in my toiletries so I was able to finish my shower. I replaced the two now empty bottles with full ones I got off a housekeeping cart.
- JODIE (10/5): - The lady that checked us in on February 27th was very friendly and very helpful
- Joleen (6/5): Conditions in the room were disappointing. - Location close to the event I was attending. The carpet in my room was threadbare, there was a flying bug in the bathroom, the bathroom had a funky smell so I ran the fan, different areas in the hotel had cracks in the plaster, or missing small pieces. Overall cleanliness was decent, but not great. The tile in the foyer was slick because of the snow brought in on shoes.
- Natalie (10/5): friendly, very kind staff. VERY clean room - very clean the smoking so close to the front door
- Clara (3/5): The location was great, but would not stay there again - Pancake machine did not work---no microwave in eating area ---no decaf coffee in eating area --- no eggs one day --- no real or liquid cream several days --have celiac --they ran out of Cherrios and put a cereal with wheat in that bin causing cross contamination --- In room we liked the bed reading light, the light within the mirror in the bathroom and the motion lights that came on when you got out of bed a night see above about breakfast area --- carpeting in room was damp --no drawers to put clothing in --room felt too crowded to move around freely
- Keri (1/5): -
- Kai (6/5): - There was an open junction box in my coworker's room that was not covered with drywall or a plastic cover. Looked tacky and unfinished.
- Richard (6/5): Not the worst I have ever had but probably would not stay there again. - The breakfast was okay. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff was fast and friendly. The heater fan ran only on high speed which was noisy. The bathroom fan did not work at all. The pillows are too small. The juice dispenser for breakfast was empty.
- Courtney (10/5): -
- Lyle (8/5): -
- Sarah (1/5): - night clerk was awesome. Thank you Linda Being brushed off with charges
- William (10/5): - Good location and the staff was very helpful. No issues
- Angela (9/5): - Quiet rooms, beds were comfy. The lights on the frame of the bed were nice. Could use additional cleaning, was a wrapper on the floor when we arrived and some of the pillow cases were stained.
- Melissa (6/5): - Staff was friendly. Room was very clean. The beds were like bricks. There was a lot of confusion about my reservation, but I'm guessing it's due to using booking.com as a third party.
- Briian (8/5): -
- Hiltje (10/5): - Efficient and secure. Feel very comfortable there. Can't think of anything .
- Terrie (10/5): - We like it alot We like everything
- Lyric (10/5): - The location was perfect, was so close to everything we went to and needed to go to! The manager was so incredible too, my sister-in-law had booked through booking and had paid and it didn't show up for them. The manager was so helpful and called several times and was amazing while she waited for hours. She didn't leave her without help and support. I do wish breakfast was left a little longer but still awesome!
- Viking94708 (4/5): Really disappointing - I stayed here earlier in the month during a return to summer heat wave which hit the state. For the first 18 hours, I kept the thermostat at 60 degrees in the room, yet the air temp was barely tolerable. I wondered what the room would be like when it gets to be 90 degrees in Iowa?
I spend about 10 nights a year at BW's and with this one, no rewards recognition, no bottled water and hell no moisturizer in the room. The breakfast was the lamest I have seen, including out of OJ!!
I don't know how they get the "plus" designation, cause if it were true ratings, I'd give em a "minus".
- Ryon (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay after phantom fall fest for my son’s 10th birthday. Hotel was nice and clean staff was very friendly 10/10 recommend
- Rachel (6/5): - Manager was directly in front of the building smoking a cigarette when we walked up to enter/check in, so we had to walk through the smoke as our first impression. Our room smelled very strongly of bleach when we walked in. The fitted sheet on the bed had a large wet spot near the foot of the bed, which we discovered when we pulled off the top sheets and comforter. It smelled like some sort of cleaning solution, so maybe a spot cleaning that did have time to dry before the bed was made? Breakfast was underwhelming. Scrambled eggs from a boxed mix, very salty sausage patties, and no butter for the toast/bagels/pancakes. Biscuits and gravy without the biscuits. Unfortunately, the TV in the breakfast room was blaring CNN news, which was really an unpleasant way to start the day. Staff were friendly, and the room-darkening window shades were amazing!! Room was quiet and bed was comfortable.
- Cameron (8/5): - The spout for the bath tub was broken, it fell off while trying to turn on the shower but after I placed it back there wasn’t any issue. One of the washcloths was stained too.
- Michael (6/5): - Everything was wonderful No alarm clock in room
- John (8/5): - Clean Good location to everything
- Lori (7/5): - good price Breakfast was very limited even though it was available til 9 am but at 8:45 nothing was left. trash was overflowing. For a weekend, it should be available until 10 am.
- Timothy (4/5): - The breakfast was one of worst ones I have had at a BW, sausage was cold not warm cold !!!!! The gravy was cool , Breakfast area was nice and clean. The room not very clean, and smelled musty the AC was very loud even on low fan speed. Had a bug crawl out of the water faucet! For a BW I was very disappointed
- Lloyd (3/5): -
- 504sangn (2/5): The worst - This place is nasty! The rooms smell musty and like dead animals! The staff is rude and unhelpful, when you can find someone at the front desk! The pool was dirty and smelled so bad of chlorine! The bed sheets were nasty as was the towels! Not sure if my room was even cleaned! Only perk is it’s across from Adventureland, but stay someplace else and drive a bit!
- U2563FCelliec (10/5): Great stay! - Spent the weekend in Des Moines went to adventureland and zoo. Great place to stay walk over to Adventureland. Bar right next door. Pool was nice. Rooms were clean. Will definitely be back again!
- Earl (2/5): - There wasn't a exhaust fan in the bathroom resulting in the entire ceiling to have Black Mold I reported it to management along with a video I was moved to another room the clerk at the front desk said that she would send a message to her manager to see about compensation for the first night's stay when I checked out I inquired about the situation and was told that she had not heard back from her manager as of now no one has reached out to talk to me
- Russell (4/5): not impressed - not a good selection, there was no meat of any kind and no potato on any day of our stay breakfast was not good took over half hour to get checked in carpet in room was verry worn and did not feel clean on feet. when we came back to hotel later that day there were several people trying to check in and were verry upset with the wait
- Nancy (9/5): We had a nice weekend getaway. I slept very well. - I like it’s close proximity to everything The temperature in the room was hard to regulate. The ice machine on the 3rd floor was not working
- suemF2577KW (10/5): Sue and Phil - This Best Western is always exceptional. Great staff, very clean and well kept, excellent breakfast and wonderful staff.
- bruce (10/5): - Helpful friendly staff, good rate, good breakfast. Clean
- Prudan (10/5): - We were satisfied
- Maggie (10/5): -
- JOSEPH (9/5): we were satisfied with our stay and would definitely stay there again. - the location was excellent. there were many very good restaurants and grocery stores very closeby. we were very close to the highway and could get to the pickleball venue very quickly and easily. the staff worked very hard to make our stay all it could be. the hotel is an older property so some of the carpets need upgrading but they are obviously working on making the property better.
- Steve (4/5): - The pool was nice and the continental breakfast had good choices. Carpets were worn. Breakfast hours could have been longer. Had trouble sleeping due to police disturbance.
- Buddy (7/5): - It was close to our location for our outing. Even though it was warm outside, the room seemed stuffy even with the AC turned down.
- Karon (10/5): - It was a really nice clean place and had dining options just a short walk away.
- RoadGuys2 (8/5): Great location for Adventure Land - All around positive experience. Everything seemed to be up to Best Western standards. Our room had lights under the bed that would show the way in the middle of the night. Very good breakfast. Nice pool.
Lots of people hanging around the front doors to smoke. The nice patio area was also a place for smokers to hang out. Although not the fault of Best Western, it was kind of a turn off.
- Global13026080645 (2/5): FIND ANOTHER HOTEL - This was the worst experience I have ever had with a hotel. The carpet was moist and looked disgusting. The bathroom was quite small and a wall shelf to use for extra storage was just hanging out of the wall. We were given 2 rags, hand towels and large towels. When I went to get clean ones, nobody was around at the front desk. Finally I found someone, but they were out of large towels so had to be ok with extra small towels. The second night of our four night stay, our room card didn't work.....we had to go back to the front desk three times to get it to work again (no apology). And if you'd like to know what is served for breakfast - it was an egg patty and oatmeal! When we went to check out on our last day, two other couples were ahead of us and had been waiting at the front desk to check out. One person said they even tried calling the hotel, but no answer. I went to the breakfast area, but the gal did not speak English. Then went outside to ask the gardener if he could find someone. He did apologize, but was unable to help as he didn't know where the manager was. She suddenly showed up about 10 minutes later. What a joke! DO NOT STAY HERE AS THE PICTURES MAKE IT LOOK MUCH BETTER THAN REALITY.
- Ward (10/5): It was relaxing and comfortable - The lady at the desk was cool she had an awesome sense of humor! The bathrooms had body wash shampoo and conditioner dispensers!!!! I've never seen that before. And the pool was heated yes I loved my stay there and definitely will book again.
- Brian (10/5): Great place to stay if going to Adventureland park - Very friendly staff. Clean rooms. Location was excellent
- garykM4686HW (4/5): Broken sink left unusable - Bathroom sink was left unusable by repairman. It was workable prior. When I approached the repairman at 3pm in the lobby, he just said bluntly, I've clocked out. Too bad. No apology, so we had no sink for the next 20 hours until we checked out. Lights above the bed within the room were virtually hard to turn off.
- Gina (6/5): - The pool was filthy. Kids smelled like feet & we made them get out immediately. Manager was great tho. Other staff seemed not so caring.
- Steed (10/5): Exceptional - beds were comfortable, the room was cool. Refrigerator and microwave in the room. Pull down shade to block the sun for sleeping in.
- Kevin (4/5): - Avoid at all cost.
While the overall stay met what's expected for a 2-3 star hotel, the overall service was horrible. Booked through Expedia which was smooth. When checking in, was asked for a credit card to cover possible incidentals. This is typical and expected. Had a reasonable stay, checked-in and out on time and didn't incur any expenses. However, the $200 deposit was charged anyway.
Called the hotel to resolve the situation and was transferred to the "Owner". This had to be the rudest person I've spoken with in years. I've read other reviews saying this about this person as well. This is one phone call I wish I would have recorded. He was very aggressive and argumentative. Consistently spoke over me and overall treated me with distain. When I asked him his name, all he would say is "Front Desk". He would not even share his name or acknowledge he was the owner. He said they didn't see a charge from the hotel to my credit card. When I tried to say the charge from the hotel had already been posted to my account, he cut me off and said there is no charge. While they are attempting to apply credit, we'll see what happens. If the credit comes through, great, but I've never treated with such distain from a business in my life
Overall, you have many hotel options in this area. I stayed here because other members of my family stayed here. Will never do it again and I recommend you find another place to stay besides the Best Western in Altoona, IA.
- Francis (7/5): Good - It was close to Adventureland We had to get our cards reset for our rooms twice. The person at the desk said that sometimes there’s a trick to getting the card keys to work. In my opinion in a hotel, there should not be a trick to get the card keys to work. They should just work.
- Charles (5/5): Normally a great place. Beds are comfortable and it’s a great location - Checked us in to a room already occupied
Security door broken room keys would not open it. So they put a rug keeping it open unsecured
No ice as a baseball group held a barbecue in parking lot grill tents etc
Soap and Kleenex recently
Pillow case dirty and bath mat damaged
Spoke to front desk several times nothing changed Responses to requests see above
- Cynthia (8/5): - It was great except we had someone from the hotel walk into our room at 3 am.
- Jack (6/5): Don’t think I will be back. - Next door to Adventureland. Nice restaurant across the parking lot. Not really up to the quality I have to expect from Best Western. The breakfast was inedible. Dirty and depressing.
- Hiltje (9/5): Superb -
- I6962TAlisae (2/5): NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE - MANAGEMENT VERY RUDE, IF YOU AREN'T OUT BY 11:00 AM CHECKOUT YOU WILL BE CHARGED 50.00. THE ROOM WAS DIRTY AND VERY EXPENSIVE . THE BED PILLOWS ARE NOT BED PILLOWS THEY ARE THROW PILLOWS WITH A PILLOWCASE. MAIDS OPEN THE DOOR WITH OUT KNOCKING WHILE WE WERE GETTING DRESSED. VERY RUDE SERVICE THIS TIME, WILL NOT STAY AGAIN.
- Diane (7/5): Good -
- April (6/5): - Customer service was not very good. area outside (outdoors) was not kept up.
- Christine (6/5): - Hotel was ok. They didn’t have towels or washcloths when we went to get fresh ones on the second day, room ran out of toilet paper and after waiting at the desk for 5 minutes with nobody responding I gave up and used the tissues. Requested a late check out and at 11am housekeeping was knocking on the door and didn’t speak any English to tell them, we had to use a translator app. Also was charged double for my stay and I am working on fixing it. Not sure if it was Expedia mistake or the hotel.
- Patricia (10/5): Good Sleep - Room was comfy - bed was great - breakfast was good
- James (2/5): - We stayed for two nights in the jacuzzi king bed suite. The jacuzzi didn’t work, we notified the morning staff that next morning and were told we’d be properly compensated or that it’d be fixed. No one did either, the whole reason for booking the jacuzzi suite that costs substantially more was for the jacuzzi to work. Unfortunately we left this morning at 10 am and the manager of the hotel still hasn’t attempted to make this right. Your replies everything in this life, unfortunately in this situation is integrity for the hotel and it’s management. I don’t recommend staying here at this time at all.
- Ashley (6/5): - Faucet in the tub was broken and sprayed water everywhere. Otherwise an okay stay. I did appreciate the coffee machine!
- Santiago (10/5): Exceptional - Was very friendly staff was very clean and my kids like it Breakfast was very good on time every morning
- susanbT5598YD (10/5): Most relaxing enjoyable stay with friendly helpful staff, clean, everything well provided - The rooms are clean, well stocked with linens. Breakfast bar well stocked with a variety: oatmeal, yogurt, pancakes, toppings including strawberries, blueberries, brown sugar, and more, Sausage, eggs, Biscuits and gravy, Breakfast pastries, variety of juices and so much more. Kept clean and staff handy to help. Plenty of seating. Pool clean and staff checking frequently to keep towels stacked. They have a fitness room that was clean and also stocked with towels. The staff in all the areas are friendly and ready to help. Rooms are comfortable and relaxing. TV has plenty of channels and Internet also provided. The staff thoroughly cleans the rooms between guests as I witnessed passing by the rooms. There is coffee with all kinds of additives, and hot chocolate available free 24-7 and other vending machines with other snacks and supplies. Close to many restaurants and Adventureland. I definitely recommend this hotel.
- Courtney (10/5): - Very convenient location and Rhonda made check-in very easy
- Verified traveler (8/5): Just a night stay - The Mirror had filled off the wall so I just leaned it against the wall. The tub didn’t drain very well. Seems for the money spent that it would have been a bit better
- Jacki (9/5): Good value for money - Rooms have been updated and there are plenty of lights, charging stations and outlets. My room was very clean, quiet, very hot water and good shower pressure. The gym didn’t open until 7 am. I respect the need for quiet for guests on the first floor, but 7 am was way too late for me.
- Sharon (10/5): - It was great to have a cordial welcome after hours of driving from Denver!
- Linda (8/5): - Breakfast was the nicest of our trip experience, just to hv it's Appreciated!! Coffee, Hot Coco was the Best!! Really Cool pancake machine Awesome, Kids got too hv as Many bowls of cold cereal they Enjoyed 😉 Juices station how Cool is That!! Awesome Biscuits and Gravy, Soft Fluffy Eggs Yum, We are Grateful for The Great Options and Choices in Breakfast, We're All very content for our day ahead!! Room was Quite a good nights rest!!
- Mary (8/5): It was a good stay - Close to our destination Our one room door key wasn’t working but they were helpful
- Brian (10/5): - Clean and friendly. Right across the street from Adventureland - ideal.
Highly recommend this property.
- 828jamal (4/5): Greedy Hotel Management - 6/7 Even though room was ready, charged me $30 for early check in.
Only working ice machine is on first floor . We were on third floor
Gathering in front of front door, with smoking. Saturday night. Carried on past 10 pm.
No maid service, only given two towels, nothing in body wash container. Asked for fresh towels. She said she was too busy, and asked me to bring towels to front desk? I refused. Towels arrived later.
(Is there anything else we can do for you, hotelier?)
Paid $3 for candy bar 7 qtr 2 dimes, 1 nickel and $1
Charged my Amex $3.60 after I left hotel.
- Emily (8/5): - They had some issues out of their control and they handled them very well.
- Lester (10/5): - Overall nice property for the money
- Catalina (8/5): Overall, everything was great. Thanks - Near by Adventureland and the free breakfast. Not having access to Wi-Fi or some free T.V. channels, however could always improve. Overall was excellent, Thanks
- LORETTA IVERY (10/5): - Great location right off of the highway and close to shopping.
- Mercedes (7/5): Good -
- Ronald (10/5): Very comfortable stay. Will definitely return again. - The staff were very friendly. The hotel has been completely renovated and was very clean and comfortable. Nothing
- Alan (6/5): - The room was excellent. The only negative was the Continental breakfast. We went down at 8:30 and there was no coffee left and scarcely anything else to eat. I really wasn't expecting to be competing for what was left to eat with the hotel cleaning staff. The yogurt however was surprisingly delicious.
- Richard (8/5): - Right next to Adventureland
- Kevin (8/5): Very good -
- Walter (10/5): - Beds were firm and got a good nights rest
- Janet (10/5): - Love all the lighting and plugins the rooms had!!
- Anthony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brittanie (7/5): Good -
