Guest Reviews
- Prickett (10/5): Nice comfortable stay. Obliging staff. Fantastic evening meal good chef. - We would like to have had more choices. Even if we had to pay for a cooked breakfast it would have been nice to have had the choice. Maybe some muesli or gluten free options. The evening meal we had was superb.
- Elaine (10/5): Very plesant - Staff and location Attention to the breakfast setting - only brown sugar- no spoon or side plate on the table
- Verified traveler (6/5): An okay stay - Simple and clean but the bed was very uncomfortable, the mattress needs changing ASAP. WiFi information in the room was incorrect. Staff were unaware of where was open on a Monday evening to eat locally which led to us driving around. No information at check in on breakfast arrangements. All in all, it was an okay stay but some small simple changes would go a long way.
- Victor (1/5): Nowhere near value for money and would not consider it on a pleasure trip. - The Two young staff when I checked in were reasonably friendly. This day I stayed for a work visit and the only considering factor is the proximity to the place of work the next day. 1) The room isnt as advertised as the room selected. The room selected had a desk which I needed to do some work in but the actual room hasnt got one. Had to make do with whatever flat surface I can fine and worked uncomfortably.
2) The cleaniness is general ok apart from a dead spider that is still hanging off its web, near the bathroom door frame.
3) The dinner menu in the evening is not appealing at all. Ended up dining in a restaurant in the nearby B&B instead.
4) The "breakfast" is what had annoyed me the most. The room had advertised to include breakfast. In fact it was only a list of cold snack type bits of food. I just had scrambled eggs on toast. Asked for some coffee but didnt bother to come in a pot, only a cup of coffee. Sat round for ages for a male staff walking past me loads of times, listening to other guest turning up ad ordering a full English breakfast. And when I asked I was told the complimentary "breakfast" that came in the room is it.
If it hadnt been a business trip I will certainly not ever stay in the the next time.

- Odinius (5/5): - Lovely village. Needs some TLC hopefully they'll be able to correct their teething problems. It was a bit chaotic waiting for our evening meal and the staff looked confused about the orders . They were getting pretty stressed. Food was good though.
The rooms were clean but the grouting needed attention in the bathroom and bathroom mirror light was not working properly. No hairdryer in the room and when one eventually turned up it was too late as we had to leave for a wedding.
This place has potential and we hope it succeeds.
- Katie (10/5): - Lovely village pub, welcoming and value for money.
- Andy Edwards (10/5): - Friendly and help staff and locals
- Chris (8/5): -
- FF1970 (10/5): Super pub tres bien tenu - Accueil tres sympathique, joli pub a peine repris par le nouveau proprietaire ! Belles chambres bien tenues et sanitaires top ! Tres satisfait de notre sejour. Rien
- ROY (8/5): Enjoyable - Continental suffice lovely evening meal Nothing
- Helen (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful village No village shop for a race away coffee
We arrived Tuesday , they don't serve food Mondays abd Tuesday.
We were on business so had to leave at 6.45am, nowhere to leave the key , so left it on our bed and we couldn't have breakfast because we left too early and they wouldn't even do any toast
- Michael (5/5): Passable - Room lovely, breakfast needs a little improvement
- Neil (7/5): Good overall - Room was good.
Evening meal was excellent.
V Good ale.
Staff very helpful. Choice / variety at breakfast
- Alan (8/5): Memorable - The staff were amazing they could not be more helpful.
They had just lost their chef but the landlord (owner?) recommended an establishment for a great breakfast and refunded the breakfast cost in full. Very generous. We were disappointed that they had lost their chef but we had a very nice dinner within easy walking distance.
- Anonymous (6/5): Staff very friendly & helpful , the village was gorgeous - Breakfast was lovely No remote control in room for television as previous occupants had stolen it.
Mattress very uncomfortable, needs replacing
- Maureen (7/5): Comfortable stay. Excellent food in restaurant, by excellent chef - Very old lots of original features Our en-suite bathroom In desperate need of updating could only use the Bath using the shower to fill it
- Kangizers (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean, staff welcoming and friendly
- Carmen (9/5): Superb - The owne was friendly and very kind
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- D (10/5): The Anchor Inn is an absolute gem! - The Anchor Inn is an absolute gem!
The rooms are a good size and well-appointed, if perhaps a little dated.
Super friendly and accommodating staff, nothing was too much trouble.
The real surprise was the restaurant. I would recommend trying out the food, even if you're not staying at the Inn. The food was locally sourced, all fresh and well prepared and presented.
All in all a very pleasant two night stay.
I would highly recommend, and have recommended The Anchor Inn to family and friends.
This will now be my go to place to stay when in the Plymouth area.
- Trisha (3/5): Poor - We were not told that breakfast was not available. It was pure chance that we found out later in the evening after we had arrived.
- Sunderland (10/5): It was amazing would recommend for anyone beautiful - Was very clean and comfortable staff were friendly and the owner Tom was very accommodating comfy bed with really soft bedding and lovely soft towels
- Brenda (8/5): An enjoyable stay despite being under new management . - Comfortable bed. Cheerful, helpful staff. A warm welcome was given to our dog. There was a lot of building work going on which couldn’t be helped because the inn had only recently been taken over by new management.
The restaurant had only been opened a few days before and there was no breakfast menu which made ordering breakfast difficult. However the cooked breakfast was very good.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing - Upon arrival we realised that the new owner was clearly in the midst of trying to finish refurbishing. Downstairs looked nice but had wet paint everywhere (which my husband got on his hoodie), with lots of noise of drilling and putting furniture together. We felt as if we were in the way and when we inquired about breakfast, which had been included with the booking, only then were we told that the kitchen wasn’t ready and we would have to go elsewhere for breakfast. Likewise, we would have to eat elsewhere for our evening meal. I had made the booking just the day before, hoping for a relaxing two night break, and the owner should have contacted me to say that no food would be available as clearly this impacted our stay significantly. To be told after we had arrived was very disappointing and I felt that he just wanted to keep our booking. The decor in our room was tired, the mattress was lumpy and the duvet almost too small for the bed. There was literally no storage furniture at all apart from a shelf next to the bed and some hooks on the wall. Also no hair dryer. There was noise from refurbishing downstairs and no soundproofing between the floors or the room next door. Because our room was above the bar there was then noise from the bar until 12.30am. We were reimbursed for the cost of having to purchase our own breakfasts elsewhere, but all in all it was a poor stay, with poor attitude and the comfort of the room was not thought through. I would not recommend.
- Darryl (2/5): I would not stay there again. - Breakfast was not provided despite being part of the booking and included in the price The payment wasn't taken from me when i arrived but via booking.com, despite being advised to the contrary when i booked - I asked for a VAT receipt for the payment upon departure and was advised it was sent - nothing arrived - I have asked twice via booking.com and nothing has been sent
- Deborah (6/5): We would be happy to stay again when the adjustments have been made :) - Rooms were a good size
Bar area was lovely Unfortunately we booked B&B and we only found out when we got there that the hotel couldn't accommodate this - we were refunded breakfast
The rooms were not cleaned after the first night and we had no clean towels and the toilet roll ran out
The cleanliness of the bathroom was not very good
The showers were sometimes cold and a bit noisy
We had a good stay at the hotel and are aware that it has recently been taken over and there are a few things/tweaks that need to take place
- Anonymous (7/5): Perfect apart from the lack of breakfast - The room. the location, the staff were all excellent (especially the highly enthusiastic new member of staff from Blackburn) and the selection of drinks was very good for a small village pub The room was booked as a "Bed and Breakfast" but due to a recent change in ownership no breakfast (or any food) was available. Which was very disappointing
- Helen (8/5): Very good - Breakfast on the 2nd day was a bit of a disaster as the chef didn't turn up.
- Charlotte (6/5): - The pub was lovely, breakfast was great and staff were polite and friendly. We had a comfortable stay but the accomodation just looked a bit tired.
- Liam (8/5): Very good -
- Jane (10/5): - Excellent service, staff helpful
- Gerald (8/5): Very good -
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Stuart (4/5): - No key to room ! Limited menu. No fruits or salads, decaffeinated tea or coffee. No fish other than deep fried. Absence of senior staff.
- Lucy (6/5): Pleasant -
- Henry (5/5): A good pub, but a disappointing stay. - The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful.
The Inn was very clean, with a good breakfast and bar. Main point is the lack of hot water when the boiler suddenly packs in - happened 3 times in 36 hours just at the wrong time! Unfortunately not easy to rectify in the late evening or early morning without staff there.
The walls/floor is quite thin so quite easy to hear downstairs or the neighboring rooms.
As per the rest of the reviews, the WiFi is genuinely awful. Pretty sure the boosters installed upstairs were broken.
- Charlene (9/5): Superb -
- Julia (7/5): It served its purpose for our 2 night stay - Large room with 3 beds overlooking the street - venetian blinds only, no curtains to pull which was a little sad as it was very light in the morning. Breakfast was very good. Quite a few things were broken in the bathroom. It was close to where we needed to be during the day.
- Alexander (8/5): Very pleasant stay - The Anchor Inn is a little scruffy from the outside but don't let that put you off as the welcome inside is warm and genuine. The barman was charming and the locals and fellow residents all engaged in conversation. It's the type of establishment where everyone talks to each other and the dogs are fed treats.
My room was clean and comfortable with a nice large walk-in shower with large pebbles on the bathroom floor which actually worked.
The food, whilst nice, needs a few minor improvements. My pork belly came swimming in gravy which was absorbed by the creamy mash potato. Put the gravy in a jug so that the dish can be enjoyed without being drowned.
Breakfast however was a disappointment and quite slow for someone staying on business. A single rasher of hard bacon that had all moisture removed without being crispy. The sausage was wet and flabby and no choice of egg.
Given my genuine criticism, I liked the Anchor Inn and would definitely stay again due to its friendliness.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I had 3 rooms booked for my colleagues and me for a business trip. The rooms were clean and nice however, we had some issues with the services received.
We called ahead to inform the hotel of our arrival, only to be told that they do not serve food on Wednesdays.
Later when we got to the hotel, we were informed that they will start breakfast until 8am. I travel frequently for work and have stayed in many hotels. Almost all start breakfast at 6:30, with latest being 7:00. We had to leave at 7:30 for a meeting so we had to leave without breakfast which was included in the price.
Additionally there was no phone signal in the hotel due to location and the wifi was also down so we could hardly do any work or even make calls.
- kevin (10/5): Great value and quality accommodation - Great value stay, with really good quality food, drink and accommodation in a very good location to explore the surrounding area.
- Lisa (7/5): Great food, room needs work! - The pub itself and the food in the pub (breakfast included and a pub meal one evening) were excellent.
The rating was let down by the very bare/spartan rooms which were not very clean and also cold.
It’s a shame as the place has real potential, and it might be that the rooms inside the pub are far better (we were in an outside room).
- Paula (8/5): Great staff, nice location and enjoyed stay - Location peaceful and friendly staff - be aware there are no shops in locality - a short drive awsy Very poor wifi and friends also staying at Inn had same problems so not good if you rely on that
- Cheryl (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): Had to have help finding the village and the inn . What a pleasant surprise,so glad we made the trip - Excellent food well prepared and presented All was fine
- Jonathan (8/5): Very good -
- James (8/5): Peaceful. - The breakfast was good. I had both the vegetarian and the full English on different mornings. The vegetarian was good but a bit deep fried for me because of the type of veggie sausage used and hash browns, I did ask for a swap but for some reason it wasn't forthcoming, Sunday morning, maybe the morning after the night before. The full English was bang on with a swap for tomatoes instead of hash browns.
Had the Sunday roast. That I highly recommend, good portions, tasty and well cooked.
- William (10/5): Amazing stay and great place - Amazing stay with amazing staff. Loved the location and the room was just perfect. They were all very friendly and helpful and welcoming and I enjoyed it very much.
The breakfast was great and so was all their other food.
All in all I loved it and will be back soon.
- Nick (9/5): Superb - Very friendly
- Tom (2/5): Very poor - No heating
Very small quilt
Uncomfortable mattress
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Val (7/5): Comfortable and good value for money. - Room was good with necessary facilities.
We didn’t have breakfast but bacon sandwiches were appreciated to take away. Could have done with a chair.
Also bunk bed linen.
Parking was difficult as small area.
- Paul (6/5): - Unfortunately our bed broke, it had clearly been repaired previously- they moved us to another room which was fine.
There were a lot of cigarette butts in the ashtrays on the picnic tables ( need emptying more regularly) also dog excrement in the car park!
Pleasant staff, peaceful environment.
- Howard (10/5): Great place - Great overnight stop.
Happy to return.
- Carole (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Malcolm (10/5): BUSINESS TRIP - Great food. lovely bar & restaurant. Breakfast good as well. Room was spot on. clean etc. I stay away a lot & i have been in some dodgy places. I will be back here, put it that way.
- Steven (7/5): Good -
- James (8/5): Very good -
- Dewi (6/5): Fine for an overnight stay - Unfortunately it was a cold room as the heating hadn't been turned on
- Stephen (8/5): Great stay in a very friendly B & B in easy reach of A38. - Breakfast was very good. Bar was very cosy with log stove. Food was well presented. WiFi was very hit and miss and restaurant was cold so had to take evening meals in the bar.
- Tony (8/5): Enjoyed our stay excellent service - Very friendly staff room clean and good food No internet no phone coverage
- Robert (8/5): Excellent, would stay again and recommend it. - It was very comfortable, clean and very sympathetically decorated. The quirky wardrobe mural on the bedroom made us smile. We had Sunday lunch, which was delicious as was the breakfast. The staff were very friendly as well. Only a small quibble, when we arrived it would have been great to see a fire as it was a cold Sunday. However, it was lit in the evening which made it very cosy
- Dewi (7/5): Good - Friendly and good location with parking Unfortunately a very cold room on entering.
Breakfast room not ready.
- Alyn (8/5): Very good -
- MR DAVID (6/5): Fine for the money paid - Parking outside the room was great, but the condition of these outside rooms is not the best. It was bitterly cold when I arrived and the heating was set to low which is understandable, but it took a VERY long time for the tiny fan heater to warm the room. The central heating radiators were not working. Neither was the wifi which was really frustrating
- Dawn (9/5): Wonderful - Lovely rustic village pub. Wonderful log burner in the bar. Really friendly staff and very accommodating of dietary needs. Food was amazing Nothing
- Geoff (9/5): excellent and very friendly staff -
- Christine (10/5): Second visit en route home from Plymouth/Spain ferry. Friendly pub staff and locals -
- Claire (6/5): It's not perfect but you get what you pay for. The lack of WIFi is a BIG problem. - The breakfast was very nicely cooked and good value, included in the overall price of my stay. The coffee machine was broken so i had a cafetiere of coffee, which was a shame. The dinner was good value, though, unfortunately, I didn't particularly enjoy my main course. However, it was a proper home cooked meal and the rhubarb crumble pudding was delicious. My room off the car park was spacious and clean. The staff were friendly. I booked 2 nights at this Inn to catch up on important IT admin (I needed some quiet brain time between visiting friends) and unfortunately, I had no wifi in my room and the wifi in the bar was not consistent, so I didn't want to risk sending important documents etc. I also had no phone service (I'm with EE) so basically felt completely cut off. Under normal circumstances, I would have cancelled my booking and moved to a Premier Inn, but I was just too tired. I feel it's a bit mean to rate the Anchor Inn down because of the wifi issue, but I also feel it's unfair of the Anchor Inn to accept bookings without warning people there is a BIG problem with WIFI. I would not have booked had I have known. I misread the address and thought the Inn was in Ivybridge, which it isn't. It's in a village outside with a not particularly enjoyable drive between the two in the dark at night. I feel it's a bit misleading to include Ivybridge in the address. The main radiator in my room wasn't working, so I had a portable electric heater, which is ok I suppose. The bathroom sealant and grouting needs some attention. I didn't like that anyone in the car park could look directly through the window into my bedroom and see me lying on the bed, watching tv in the middle of the day. The windows need some frosting on the lower half. I didn't like that the curtain across the window doesn't cover the whole window and again, people could look in through the window, with the curtains drawn and see me walking about in part of the bedroom with only my knickers on! The Inn has a bit of a feeling that things need a bit of attention but I think that is probably reflected in the pricing.
- Caroline (10/5): Great value - Great value for money, independent business
Log fire in the bar area
- Paul (9/5): Very Happy - Great location and very good staff
- Yvonne (10/5): Exceptional - Such friendly helpful staff.
Evening meal and breakfast were delicious
Thank you. Nothing
- Laurence (8/5): Good value room for one night stay. - Good price and nice breakfast Arrived at 9.30pm and accesses to room was not clear.
- Leslie (9/5): Lovely stay , very good value for money -
- Nicola (9/5): Try the pork belly! - A very warm welcome and a real fire in the bar area.
Pork belly dinner and breakfasts were lovely.
Good value for money. Unfortunately, I could hear a man snoring in the room next door - but that's nothing the hotel could have changed really.
- Victoria (6/5): Good location and room was fine for one night. - The Anchor pub itself is a great village pub - log fire, slate floor, good local beers and ciders. Great location in the middle of the village. The bedroom was rather tired and needed some TLC. There were some cracks and peeling paint, toothbrush holders falling off the wall etc. It was fine for one night but with a tiny bit of effort and upkeep could be much better.
- Cheryl (9/5): Superb -
- Tim (9/5): Very enjoyable over night stay . Good beers and food - Very attentive staff and very cosy with roaring fires
- Crookston (10/5): Cracking place - Lovely place to stay food was great Lack of WiFi in rooms as there is no mobile signal at all in that location
- Stiliyan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adrian (7/5): Good -
- Lee (7/5): Good -
- Geoffrey (8/5): Very good -
- Malcolm (10/5): BUSINESS TRIP ME ONLY - Great stay, not really too sure why people have left negative feedback for this place ? I can only imagine they have Rolls Royce taste & Skoda budgets as the saying goes ? Im a sales rep so i stay away quite a bit. yes this place isnt the most luxurious - but look at what you pay. It ticked all the boxes for me. & i stay away quite a bit. Yes the bar area is small ish, but that to me is an appeal. They have a larger restaurant area if that's better suited ? It was a cosy pub atmosphere. The food was very good.
- Richard (9/5): Great value for money. - Good food, happy staff, clean warm rooms. Not a lot to dislike. Ok some have commented on stains on the hall way carpet. It a pub in the middle of the country!!
- Nick (8/5): great - dinner, breakfast and room all very good the coffee at breakfast
- Ingrid (7/5): Overall a nice place to stay - Everywhere was very clean and tidy. Food was tasty and good value for money. The dining tables and chairs could do with updating and the carpets on the stairs and corridors could do with cleaning. In the morning there was only one employee on duty doing everything , so there was quite a wait for breakfast.
- Peter (9/5): A beautiful setting. And a lovely experience - Everything about it Nothing
- Tessa (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): Very high standard in general. - High standard. Long wait for Breakfast service.
- Margaret (8/5): Very happy, good value for money. - Attractive rooms, bar and restaurant. Good on-site parking Lack of sound insulation in the bedrooms
- Ross (10/5): - The staff were very accommodating, lovely place to stay and would visit again.
- Sonya (8/5): A great find - A last minute overnight stay. Had a fantastic room, so big, staff incredibly friendly and helpful. Great value. Fabulous breakfast. Quiet, family games to play, plenty of sockets for charging. Lovely, reasonable meal in the restaurant. Would recommend
- Rajesh (4/5): Disappointing - Poor breakfast service, room had a somebodies trouser in the cupboard. Poor to no WiFi connection.
- Karen (9/5): Superb - All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. One member of staff in particular ( sorry didn't get his name but he only works Fridays and Sundays) was exceptionally helpful, pleasant and polite and made us feel very welcome on our arrival and throughout Sunday evening in the restaurant.
- Mike (9/5): Superb -
- Linda (9/5): Wonderful short break - The room, separate from the pub itself, was lovely. Very dog friendly. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and good vegetarian choice. Beautiful peaceful village location. Nothing to dislike
