There were not enough hooks so there was nowhere to hang jackets, or clothes, no soap dish in the shower, and my Dad's room there was someone plaster on the floor! (Ewww) Building works were interesting but finished at a decent time, despite being very loud and sweary on our arrival!

There's a pub in the hotel where I had a great meal, and great service. It's a quirky place, with an old fashioned lift with the gate that comes across. Parking right across the street (although it's not secure parking.) It's an old building, and some of it is updated, and the room was certainly updated nicely, but the lobby, hallways and stairs, etc show the building's age. I guess I was expecting more character? Thin walls meant my neighbour kept me up talking loudly on a call. Only stayed one night as was just passing through.

- Donna (5/5): I’m sure there are nicer places to stay in Timaru - We were placed in room 101 the same room Queen Elizabeth stayed in during her New Zealand visit in 1954. The hotel is close to the cbd and the restaurant is welcoming and served nice pub style meals. I don’t think this room has had too much work done on it since the Queens visit. Please be aware that what you book through booking.com is not necessarily what you get. After reserving a modern refurbished room we were placed in an old room that clearly needed updating. It was dirty and had a stale smell. I’ve since found out this hotel allows pet dogs so I’m not sure if this room has occupied animals. The receptionist apologised for us not getting a modern room but gave no explanation why.

- John (7/5): Different, a bit quirky, not perfect yet but overall good fun and very enjoyable - A wonderful old building with a long history, very stately and imposing. Reception area needs renovating as it does not feel welcoming. Crazy old-style lift was a lot of fun, if in need of some renovation. Hope they don't feel the need to remove it. Our room was huge and included a fully-furnished lounge area between bed and bathroom. The whole room has recently been renovated to a high standard and was bright and modern. Downstairs the restaurant and bar are shared with the street so were always bustling but well-staffed. All staff, especially Sharon at breakfast, were friendly and helpful. Food was good and our whole stay was great value and highly enjoyable. Carpet going upstairs needs replacing. The type of renovation work done to our room needs to be extended to the common areas.

- johncT2717PJ (8/5): A grand old building receiving some renovation, but more is needed. - From the outside the Grosvenor is a wonderful old heritage building, stately and imposing. However, the reception area needs an uplift as it does not feel welcoming and the carpet heading upstairs is quite worn. The ancient lift is very quirky and fun to use but could benefit from some redecoration. Our room was a great surprise as it was very large with a small lounge area between the bed and the bathroom. The whole room has benefitted from a complete overhaul so was bright and modern. The restaurant area is huge and doubles as a bar available from the street. Service was excellent both for dinner and for breakfast especially when Sharon was the morning hostess. The whole place has the challenge of needing to upgrade without losing its charm and character. In the meantime, the room rates are exceptionally low considering the facilities on offer. It's off to a good start and we wish it well for the future.

- Iain (9/5): A hotel with a royal history - The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel has a great history with the UK Royal family and we were fortunate to stay in the same room as the queen. The room was spacious and had good facilities. The bar/restaurant had a good selection of meals. The room decor was a little tired and could be a huge selling point if decorated appropriate to it's history.

The staff were lovely too, couldn't have been more helpful, recommended going to see the penguins although so late in the season only one seen. The adjacent restaurant did great food for dinner and a substantial breakfast, service always with a smile too
- LynnRoach (8/5): Much better than expected. - We were a bit worried about staying here after reading previous reviews and when we rocked up the outside did not look very inviting. However they are in the process of renovating the hotel and floor 2 looks like it’s literally just been completed. We had room 210 which is an executive room and were very pleasantly surprised. Very clean and modern with comfortable beds and bedding and plenty big enough. Bathroom very clean and modern. Little fridge for storage. Coffee/tea making with proper milk provided. It’s not in the best location so don’t expect lovely views. However it is close to the Main Street with shops and restaurants. Breakfast was very nice and service friendly. All in all a much better stay than we anticipated as long as you get a refurbished room.

- Josh and Lucy (3/5): - The receptionist was very understanding and helpful The bedroom had mould all around the bath tub and looked nothing like the photos that I had seen online. I talked to the front desk to explain my concerns and she agreed with me that the photos did not look the same. She moved us in to another room but told me i couldn't get a refund to do with their policy. On arriving to the next room my husband turned on the shower to have a shower and the whole shower unit came off the wall because the grub screws that were holding it together were not screwed in at all. Again I went to the front desk to explain my concerns. We were then moved to our third room of the night. The room was pleasant but the toilet was not clean and had hair in the toilet. Overall it was rather a stressful stay after coming to timaru to see a really sick relative and I would not stay again. both the stay and the food at the resturant were a dissapointment. However the lady at the front desk was very helpful understanding.
