Guest Reviews
- Tracy (10/5): - Had a wonderful stay. Perfect for a quick night stay before heading to work.
- matthew (4/5): Stay away - The staff was friendly but from there everything went downhill. Once arriving to the room we found a stinky dilapidated room. I am sure the place was built at least fifty years ago and has never been updated. Between the appearance and the smell of the place my wife and I left. Later we found a very clean comfortable room in an adjacent city. We booked that hotel for two nights. After sleeping at the new hotel the next morning at 8:00am I went back to the Welch Hotel to see if I could get refunded the second night. I was told no even though we didn’t stay there either night. The reason being they couldn’t refund the deposit was because of the Oktoberfest celebrations in LaCrosse. Which makes no sense because there was a shortage of rooms. There is no way that they should be able to command $350 for a two night reservation regardless of the calendar. I fell prey just beware. Matt Johnson
- Cindy (10/5): - Everything was great.
- Patrick (10/5): - I had a small issue with the TV and a staff member came over right away and fixed the issue within 2-3 min she was very knowledgeable and friendly.Really great place to stay
- Steven (2/5): - The bathtub was dirty and stained. Carpet was dirty. Air conditioner ran all night. No ice machine. Sheets were dirty and had holes. No continental breakfast. When we checked in, the office was locked.
- Jerome (6/5): - Clean and parking was good.
- Thomas (10/5): - Very quiet and subtle. Melissa is the best in the business.
- Thomas (10/5): - Best motel in LaCrosse Wisconsin.
- Wendy (4/5): - Would not recommend.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nothing special - It was a place to lay your head. The bedding was clean BUT the towels in the bathroom were Dingy.
The bathroom had Cigarette burns all over in it and it looked like tar or BM was rubbed on the walls.
I will find a different hotel/motel when I stay in that area again.
- Shyekara (6/5): Just ok - Check in was strange… you have to use a phone to call the desk. Originally I was given a key to a room that already had someone in it. Got that figured out.
Property is run down, all buildings need paint and repairs. The room as ok. Shower floor had a chunk out where the drain is, and the exhaust fan needs to be cleaned.
The bed was fine and bedding clean. TV is hung crooked on the wall. Window AC was kind of loud but kept my room clean.
Overall, stay was ok. Probably won’t stay again though.
- Verified traveler (6/5): You get what you pay for - The electric wall outlets didn't work in most of the room. There was a bucket under the air conditioner to catch condensate. The bathroom sink drain was almost completely clogged. The bed and the shower were very good, though.
- Tasha (6/5): - Quiet and clean. It served its purpose.
- Thomas (10/5): - Very nice place to get away.
- Meng (2/5): - The power died from plugging in the refrigerator. Also, the AC unit barely helped with the room.
- Erica (10/5): - Was in a very nice area and service was great
- Mark (10/5): - This is one of those older motels where you can park in front of your room. I drive a Dodge Ram, and I really appreciated how the spots are wide. I could open my doors fully without bumping vehicles on either side of me. The rooms are kind of basic, but everything worked, including the AC. It was clean and quiet. No issues. I fully recommend the Welch Motel.
- Julie (6/5): - I didn’t like that the air was NOT on in my room when I checked in it was 90 and humid outside so my room must have been 100 and humid. If you have the room rented put the air on in the morning so your guests can be comfortable as soon as they walk into there room !! No one was in the office when we arrived at 6:00pm not cool .and I do not like that the outside light can not be turned off bugs flying into the room lighting up the room even with the curtains closed.
- John (4/5): - Property is run down. Our room did not look anything like the pictures. Window A/C was off when we arrived and the room did not get cool until morning. Requested a coffee maker for room, was told they would bring one by in an hour. Never saw any staff again. No blow dryer, no coffee maker, refrigerator extremely small - not like one in picture. Sheets were clean. Only a few dead bugs in room. Room had a musty smell.
- Jeanne (6/5): - Basic old and run down but had all I needed, and price was right. Room was spacious, but bathroom dirty. Motels are great to pull right up, and the place was quiet except for the scampering sounds inside the walls in the morning, probably the birds who chirped in the morning which I didn’t mind.
- Dale (8/5): - Slightly outdated, but clean and comfortable. Good hotel for the price.
- Jo (6/5): - No one at desk. Always have to call them . Really needs an update.
- Steven (2/5): - Horrible smell, furniture has holes in upholstery
- Hayden (10/5): Good stay, friendly people, cheap! - Great, and clean
- Ann (6/5): - Inexpensive, no frills. I recommend to bring your own pillows.
- George (4/5): - I’d stayed here in mid 80’s early 90’s it’s changed hands a few times. Room I was in was run down. Stains on floor, security chain on door broke
Off cutting ripped, tile in bathroom needed attention and many more things. It was OK for
An overnight and cheep. I don’t think I’d stay again
- John (4/5): Never again - TV wasn’t working and they couldn’t figure out how to fix it. The faucet in the bathroom won’t shut off. They’re supposed to fix a toilet but who knows if that happened overall the staff was friendly owner avoids getting things done right
- joe (8/5): - Outdated but a place to stay for the price
- Laura (10/5): - It was clean, met my needs, nice staff, safe. Affordable.
- Johnathan (10/5): - Great place to stay!!
- Trever (8/5): - Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Premium tv channels.
- Michael (10/5): - The staff here was exceptional. The lady that checked us in made sure that we had everything that we needed .Her name was Melissa and she went above and beyond during our entire stay. That women needs some recognition and a raise. I would recommend this stay to all of my friends just because of he hospitality. Thank you Melissa for making our Christmas one to remember .
- Matthew (4/5): Not Great, but ok for the Price - This place is the place you go when you want or need to save money and the bells and whistles don't matter. The condition or quality of the room was not great. Alright for the price, but not ideal. They have Spectrum cable, but need to upgrade their subscription to get much of anything. Almost all the channels said to upgrade your subscription or said channel wouldn't come in. So if entertainment in the room is important to you be sure to bring your own. Also, if your not religious you're going to roll your eyes at their wifi password.
- Steve (6/5): - It was fairly close to where I planned to spend most of my time in La Crosse, which was my main consideration; any extra amenities would have been wasted on me.
The person who checked me in was courteous; my room was quiet; access was pretty easy. It was perfectly adequate for what I needed, and easily the most inexpensive place that I considered.
- Mohammad Saiful (6/5): - Theirs service is not satisfied.
Room inside service is poor, heating system is poor.
- Tammi (10/5): - This is an average motel , the reason I recommend the Welch motel is , I've paid more and got less ... When you need a place to stay to shower , watch a couple movies ,and sleep .This is the place ..It's clean ,comfortable ... Not a nightmare
- Daniel (10/5): - They have parking for people towing boats.
- Jeffrey (6/5): Simple, Average and Acceptable - Considering the value price of our room, our stay at the Welch Motel was average. The room contained mis-matched furniture and was acceptably clean but not sparkling. My main complaint was that an old, hot water furnace register could not be shut off, so we had to run the air conditioner on cold all night to offset the heat being produced.
- HERTA (8/5): - very clean, easy access
- Elroy (4/5): - Terrible
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not so amazing - no door trim therefore no deadbolt, did not feel safe so moved furniture in front of door, a/c did not cool room, bed uncomfortable, bathroom floor dirty, towels rough and cheap, curtains filthy/stained? On the up side we didn’t see any bugs or mold and floor was vacuumed.
- Marlette (4/5): - Front door had been kicked in - big hole near lock. I felt insecure, dragged furniture to block doorway. Charged exorbitant fee, triple what room was worth. No amenities.
- Alejandro (6/5): - First time staying in a motel in awhile. Overall decent experience, owner was nice and helpful.
- JAMES (10/5): - Arrived and was promptly checked in and got into my room which was clean and didn't smell bad. Turned on the AC and the room cooled quickly. The bed was kind of squeaky but comfy and the hot water was good. Bathroom was dated but functional.
- Laura (10/5): - It was great place to stay
- Kathleen L (8/5): Comfy quiet - By far not a 5 star hotel, but comfortable and quiet! There wasn’t bath towels in the rest room and tub wasn’t the cleanest but it was satisfactory for an overnight trip. Beds were clean and very comfortable! Didn’t hear traffic or loud people! Would recommend for a comfortable overnight stay.
- Heather (8/5): - Good
- Daniel (2/5): - After taking my credit card - she immediately handed it back & said the credit card machine was not working. I needed to pay cash. I told her that I didn't have that much cash. she acted surprised & told me to find an ATM machine. I knew that on looking @ the reviews in August of this year someone else had to pay cash. When I mention that she became very defensive & said she had been working there for 8 yrs & this had never happened before.AC very loud - tough to sleep. No security chain - broken off. Screen door broken. TV very small. The worst place I have ever stayed at.
- Ellen (6/5): - The room was clean enough, but it had a musty smell. Everything in the room was very dated. The owner was very nice. The location worked out ok for us. Reasonable price but they need to do some updating. They could make the room so much nicer even just shopping for replacement stuff at a thrift store.
- Wolfgang (4/5): - Credit card machine was broken, I complained that I didn’t have enough cash to pay, was told they’re not obligated to give me a room. I needed to walk to the Kwik Trip to use an ATM since I didn’t have a car. Then I was given a room without A/C and no windows that open. The guy had already left. The owner claimed he would given me a refund the following morning but I’ve gotten nothing in a week. Worst motel ever.
- Mellanie (10/5): - As always very friendly staff. Very clean . Air conditioner awesome . Great place to stay
- Green (10/5): - After the day i had and people i dealt with qnd all negative attitudes it was great to deal with someone on the friendly side. Thanks so much
- Mai Yang (4/5): - There was no hot water in the room plus smell so strongs smoking.
- Tom (10/5): Good hotel at reasonable price - This hotel has the basic amenities in the room, but is adequate for what i needed for my trip and why it has such a reasonable rate. Room was clean and bed was very comfortable which met my desires for this trip.
- Lauren (10/5): Great place to stay - I had a very pleasant stay at the Welch Motel. My room had everything I needed (except coffee, but they are reportedly getting coffee back in the office area in the near future). There was a small microwave and a nice sized refrigerator with a good freezer, not the tiny nonfunctional freezers you often find at hotels. The staff provided me with a hair dryer. I had to ask for it at the desk, but it was a full sized one and worked well. The room was very clean, the bathroom was spotless and the shower was very nice. I did have a little bit of an issue with the water getting a little chilly after a couple of minutes, but I imagine it's hard to work around an old plumbing system. It was fine, I managed.
It was so quiet there! I felt like I had the place to myself, though I know I had someone next door. I didn't even hear his TV through the wall.
The negatives: it would be great if they put a couple of towel hooks in the bathroom. There really wasn't a place to hang towels. And there was a slight musty smell in the room though I didn't smell it once I was in there a few minutes.
Overall, I would recommend the Welch and I will likely stay there again. The owners are friendly and helpful. They do not keep the office unlocked (it's attached to their living quarters) but there's a phone out front and you just call them and they will let you in.
I loved the nostalgic look of the place.

I loved the nostalgia of the place. Felt like I went back to the 60s or 70s!
- Tristan (10/5): - Amazing beds
- Robyn (2/5): Horrid - This is the worst hotel I have ever seen. It was like something out of a bad movie. They should be ashamed of themselves for trying to rent these rooms for money. We left at 10:30pm because I could not allow my children to stay in this hotel. Musty, stained, no locks, the air conditioner duck taped into the window-the list goes on.The final straw was when I opened my bed and the sheets were stained brown. Thank goodness I could get a room nearby for the state track meet….save yourself the trouble and sleep in your car.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Price too high for conditions of rooms
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing - Great
- Gina (8/5): - No front desk attendant, No business center available, No coffee or breakfast, No lights in the parking lot, very very thin walls.
- John (10/5): - ✔️
- Verified traveler (6/5): - the bed advertised as queen it was a full size bed
- Verified traveler (10/5): Welch is Great! - Very clean, friendly staff, cozy rooms with great temperature control. Close to many fast food places and restaurants/bars.
- Tree (10/5): - Friendly housekeepers and property owner, many choices of restaurants and fast food, close bars, and 24/7 gas station near
- Todd J. (8/5): - Place is worth the price. Old motel but not bad for a 1 night stay
- Jennifer (4/5): Overpriced - Overpriced for the quality of the room. Cost way more than advertised and they kept almost half of deposit.
- Richard (10/5): - Very nice place to stay going to stay again sometime
- Randall (8/5): - I like this motel for its price and cleanliness. I lost sleep this time, though, because of the heating system. I was too cold for a long time, and later awakened because it was too hot.
- Paula (8/5): Freezing cold - This motel was just as I expected for the low dollar that it cost me.
I was uncomfortable only because I was so cold. The thermostat had been set on only 50 degrees. I arrived to my room at 9:00pm and turned the heat up at that time. It took several hours to get the room heated because everything was so cold. The temperature outside was 22 degrees.
I took my shoes off and went to bed with all my clothes on including my jacket. And I wrapped a bath towel around my head in an effort to retain my own heat.
I had a fitful night. My legs kept cramping because of the cold bed. I had to get up repetitively and sit by the wall heater. I wrapped a bath-towel around my legs and the heater so that the hot air could warm them up.
Each time I got up I turned the thermostat up another 5 degrees. By morning I had it all the way up to 95 degrees and still the room felt only like 68-70. This is because the whole room had been so very cold for so long that it took a long time to get it warmed up again.
The staff should have set their minimal temp at around 65 degrees rather than 50 in the winter time in Wisconsin.
- Jeffrey (2/5): COCKROACHES!!! Don't stay here! - We have stayed in many motels/hotels over the years and have never had this experience before, not even in the south. My husband and 8 year old granddaughter checked into the motel when
it was still daylight. When they entered the room it had a musty, stale smell. They had to leave quickly to set up for a craft show and when they returned it was dark. When they turned on the lights cockroaches were scurrying for cover☹️. Our 8 year old granddaughter was, understandably, freaked out. She went into the bathroom where there were spiders and ants. The aircondtioner was very greasy and dirty. When they pulled down the blankets the sheets appeared to be clean, but there was a large stain on them. Our granddaughter said "Papa, they (the cockroaches) won't bite me when I'm sleeping will they?" In the morning the first thing she said was "Let's get out of here!". We tried to get a refund from the motel and they refused since our room was nonrefundable. Hotels.com gave us $25 in one key credit which is appreciated but doesn't make up for this experience . We did not know that we were renting a cockroach room or we would have booked it as refundable. Or, better yet, wenever made a reservation here in the first place. It turned what should have been a special experience for our granddaughter into a scary, let's just get through this night and get out of here experience. Don't stay here!
- michael (8/5): - The Welch has cleaned up and remolded. The property is old but they have tried to fix it up. It was a comfortable stay.
However, they no longer accept dogs. We have stayed there for many many years because of it's proximity to Goose Island and the duck hunting we do there. No longer, as they DO NOT allow dogs. Very foolish as we will know take our business elsewhere..
- Tony (2/5): - Even as a last resort I would prefer to sleep in my car. This place/room is so so outdated Mattress was on a wooden platform, had a distinct odor of old , dead bugs in the window of bathroom like it was never cleaned. A tv that took 45 mins to boot up to watch. No hot water only warm water. Just a truly bad experience and to boot it all I left my phone charger next to the bed and wouldn’t you know it they couldn’t find it. Ha glad I could donate a new iPhone charger. Don’t ever stay here !!!!
- Greg (2/5): - Nobody at the desk to check in. They called me and asked me to come early and check in at their convenience. Bugs in the room looks like cockroaches. When I went to complain, they would not answer the door or the phone that is out there.
- Julie (8/5): - It was on the main drag... restaurant options were great. Motel staff were extremely friendly.
- Wendy (10/5): Pleasant - The owners were very kind and pleasant to work with. I had a heating issue which I didn’t realize until the following day because I arrived late and they came over the next day to fix it. I needed some utensils and they were able to provide that they do not offer a coffee service in the morning but they have a coffee bar with a sign so you will need to get your own coffee or bring it with and heat it up in the room. The area has several places nearby to eat and Walmart is right down the road. The rooms are spacious. I had a 1000 had a walk-in shower. The shower was recently redone. They are working on repainting. It looks to me like they had painted the main wall in the bedroom, but the bathroom still needed to be done along with the other walls, I was there for a volleyball tournaments so I was just there to sleep and it was like a mini apartment. No-frills is definitely a motel and a hotel so the only thing you’re getting is the room there’s no breakfast or anything like that. I felt very comfortable there. It is old fashion where you actually have a key to open your door. They said that they owned one other motel in the area. My only recommendations were to be put different curtains up so it blocks all the lights because on the top, there’s a huge opening, and the light came through, because the rod that’s holding the curtains it’s too far away from the wall. It had a mini fridge in the mini fridge other freezer. There was a microwave and I had a quite large dresser.
- Shawna (6/5): - Need to change the sheets
- Jorge (6/5): - No Kleenex in the room
The pillows weren’t adequate
The bath towels were so thin and old, barely dried you off
- Ralph (6/5): - They are in the middle of remodeling. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we left and went and ate dinner. The owner was very gracious and said they would give us a discount to make up for it but did not see it on our credit card. The room was nice when we were allowed in..
- angela (6/5): - The place is really rundown- I was charged more than what I booked it at- the lobby was a mess as was the whole outside of the buildings. Once inside the room was ok.
- Janet (10/5): - This is the motel we always stay at. Nothing fancy and feels like home. Love it.
- Janet (10/5): - We always stay here when in lacrosse, reminds me of grandmas house
- Sanford (2/5): - The worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Dirty and in disrepair. I spend 1 or 2 nights per week in hotels.
- David (6/5): - Room clean and shower new but NO MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM and toilet loose
- Patrick (2/5): Never will stay here again - Not so good. People next to me must have been long term renters and were fighting and yelling all night. Could not get to sleep
Hot water on sink didn’t work. Tv didn’t work. Not worth the price. Check in was rude. Was concerned about security if my credit card
- James T (8/5): - Manager was very friendly. Called us in advance to verify arrival and time of check in. There was no hot water in the sink in the bathroom. There was no coffee maker in room and no ice machine on property.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Welch motel - Just needed a spot for one night. Selection in area was very limited, but Welch Was ok for my purposes.
- Andrea (8/5): - Plain and simple, but clean and close to things.
- Xin (8/5): - A budget hotel. You get what you paid for. But the hotel could be cleaner. Underneath the bed should be cleaned.
- Janet (10/5): - My favorite place to stay,
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Thank goodness it was not a hot day and the air conditioner needed to be used because it was all taped up and the cover was pushed in. Otherwise it was clean.
- Lynn (8/5): - Older motel but very clean and friendly staff.
- Suzanne (8/5): - Don't let the looks of the outside of this property deter you from staying here. The room was not fancy but it was very clean and comfortable. Even though it is on a busy street once in the room you could not hear the traffic. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. This motel is within a short walking distance to an excellent restaurant called the Hungry Peddler. I do think the price was a little high for a basic motel room but other than that I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
- Edward (2/5): - There wasn't anything unique about this hotel. It was very cluttered on the outside and the curb side appearance was very awful. The carpet was very dirty and stained, The curtains was also very dirty and mole was in the shower's ceiling.
- Audrey (4/5): - Office door was locked and they were putting together a bed frame where I needed to get to the counter. Their credit card reader is in a back room so they take your card out of your site. Stale smell in my room. Some freshener would do wonders. Tv remote was under the bed and drawer handles missing on the dresser.
- Verified traveler (8/5): one night - ok grungy but clean, wifi did not work,
- Reiner (2/5): - Blood stains on bed, room smelled terrible, AC was duct taped into the wall lmfao, the shower curtain was all bloody and dirt filled, absolutely terrible lmao I’d never tell anyone to go here
- Steven (8/5): One night stay - It is a good place to lay your head down after a long trip. A basic room with a bed.
- marilyn (6/5): Emergency trip - Extremely outdated. But clean and served the purpose.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very clean, Close to hospital. Great staff.
