Guest Reviews
- Bailey (8/5): - Really lovely hosts, quiet spot really close to the airport. Only downside is you need to take a taxi to go to the beach, but if it's a short trip, it's perfect.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Worst place ever to stay dirty and smelly. DO NOT STAY HERE
- Janet (10/5): Close to Basseterre - John, the owner and manager, was extremely helpful with suggestions about where to go in both St. Kitts ans Nevis. Though the Culture House may seem a bit outside the main action, it is only a 10 min walk to the main road where you can catch bus/vans to anywhere. Basseterre is only 5 minutes away.
- Mike (2/5): - Horrible. Totally run down dump. Had to leave early wo refund! Choose between heatstroke (no AC, windows cannot be opened) or eaten by mossies when you open doors wo fly screens. No lounge anymore (it is now a stinking dog shelter), no breakfast or bottled water as described. Fotos & text are a fraud (Food, lounge dont exist or beach pic from Frigate Bay). No beach view. Beach far away & cannot be used/dump. Google "Pics Culture House Basseterre" for real pics.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Guess is very hospitable makes sure you okay goes out and beyond to accommodate
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Family was not happy... The host John and Tina was very nice but there was not much to accommodate family... They left before check out... If you’re looking for a basic hide away in the country then go for it but must like dogs too... Not for children or adventurous families...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - John and Tina were really nice hosts. They gave us a good orientation of the island, must see spots, dining and general advice on how to get around. Every morning before we went out Tina would ask where we were going and suggests good places to see in that area and it always worked out better than the spots we had intended to see. The room was clean and comfortable, probably could use a mini refrigerator and better lighting. My two main issues would be the plumbing in the bathroom, as water backed up every time we showered and the dogs.
- gerald (6/5): - L'accueil très sympathique de John contrebalance le côté un peu rustique du bâti.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Ladies and Gentlemen. If you are expecting the Ritz hotel please go elsewhere. If you are looking for a comfortable, clean and relaxing retreat then this is your place. John was the pillar of hospitality and ensured I had everything I needed to be comfortable. The location is "Lived in" and rustic and John resues dogs so if you are not an animal lover this is not the place for you. The location is for the "World Traveler" or someone who wants to have some quiet time and enjoy a drink on the balcony while reading a good novel quietly.
The Wifi works great - was able to stream movies on netflix without any issues however please note there is not a microwave, fridge etc in the room however John will do his best to accomodate you. There is no AC which is a shock at first however you do get used to it over time and makes the shower so much enjoyable as it is a coolish shower which I enjoyed.
Reading through some of these reviews is quite sad as honestly you get for what you pay for. Make sure you rent a car or have someone to drive you around the island. Everything is close in proximity however a car or bike is something I would recommend you have to get around. There are bugs as there is throughout the Caribbean however I wasnt really bother by them.
John - Thanks for your hospitality and kindness and look forward to coming back again for a relaxing time.
Cheers
- jose luis (10/5): Buena estabncia - Bonita casa y excelente dueño, siempre presto a ayudarte.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hard to locate entrance. Nice room, affordable.clean and a balcony overlooking the ocean. Be aware that no soap or shampoo is provided. I already knew there was no hot water. I left at 8 am and no one was there for checkout. Affordable nice rooms for people not needing to be pampered.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I did not like this property at all. It didn’t have the basic necessities such as running water, hot water, not enough toiletries and no air conditioning. There were no facilities to make a simple tea or coffee in the morning. To top it all off, the beds were extremely uncomfortable and the place was infested with mosquitos. Our whole family was bitten and we don’t know if we are carrying any mosquito-born diseases overseas.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Staff was friendly and room was clean. Owner need to update there website to include information ... No TV,, No WIFI, No hot water,, no restaurants within walking distance, no easy access to taxi
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I like the the owner was there to receive me and show me my room. He was also pleasant.
In terms of security it's extremely dangerous as it's very secluded and should have some form of physical security.
The odour of the animals in the property was very overpowering and atrocious. The presence of the animals was all over by the stench that took over the place.
The pictures displayed on the internet are not recent as the place look unkempt and run down. I would never ever think about having breakfast there..
The rooms had no way of even warming some thing to eat or keeping something cool. It was not worth my 58US. If it was refundable I would not stay there. I would find another place to stay.
Another thing that was upsetting to me is though the room was clean enough and smell clean when I tried my skin with towels that appeared clean fur or hair from the animals came off on my skin. I felt so unclean and I was really just glad to leave that place.
He need to get that place up to better standards. It was not fear for me to have paid even one dollar for something like that.
I would not think of going back there even though the owner was pleasant enough. The stench of animals getting to my room was a major turn off. Plus he needs to label the enter and exit doors.
- Spoon (6/5): - You really need a car as it is a long way from anywhere and taxis are expensive. There is no food close by and no fridge. The room is no frills with a fan. John is a nice guy. If you want aircon, tv, fridge, hot shower water, facilities go somewhere else
- Sara (4/5): - Bed is hard, needs air condition in the room, a mini fridge, microwave, air freshener, room needs a new look
- Elle (2/5): Nothing like the photos. Don’t stay here! - When she opened the door I saw the lizard run underneath the bed. No AC and no screens on the windows?! I’m not happy with mosquitoes feasting on me as all of the windows couldn’t even close shut. The room looked worse than a US Motel 8. There were bars on the windows and door on inside of the room...why? The kind of bars you’d find outside of a unit. The host was sweet but come on...you couldn’t even spare a nice room for us? Awful!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good stay. - Very friendly explained me what all to do in the island. Had great mangoes from his backyard. Price was good. Not in the center, but well accessible via taxi.
Overall good stay and will recommend to others.
- Vivian (6/5): Nice Hotel in quiet area, love the fruit trees. - Overall experience was lovely and I would definitely visit again, and also recommend the Culture House to my friends and family..
- Verified traveler (4/5): Over rated -0* - Interesting to know how are hotels rated 1*-5*. No hot water available, yet to see restaurant and bar, no tiding of room during my stay. Poor lighting around building. Suitable for persons willing to pay about $25us per day. Certainly not $65us
- Rick W. (10/5): John is a very enjoyable and made my visit excellent! - John made sure I was well cared for and we had excellent conversations over coffee and tea!
A great host!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Low budget accommodation - If you are on a tight budget this is an option but remember you get what you pay for.
- Vagabond (10/5): A stay good atmosphere and local knowledge - The introduction to the island couldnt have been better.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Angenehm Ruhig - Sehr angenehm ruhig. Frühstück einfach klasse(sehr zu empfehlen). Sehr freundlicher Besitzer.
希望HOTELS.Com. 趕快查明退費還我
- chris (2/5): Horrible place - Never stayed, cancel on arrival because the place is a dump!!
- Sandra (6/5): Affordable for short stays. - You get the bare minimum. No refrigerator or microwave. Beds not very comfortable. No air conditioning. Just basic accommodations for the price. Lots of dogs in the facility.
- Becky (8/5): - John made us v welcome, lush breakfasts and ready to help & advise getting round the island. Great support for me & my brother when we needed it, following family matters.
- Mary (2/5): If not a safety place, difficult to find - I don't like, no safety, no facility, no hot water in the bathroom, no place to eat.
- Mary (2/5): I dont like the place - If not a safety place, I have to go to sleep in other place, no parquing. no clean, a lot of animal inside the living room and the area, The property if not in goog conditions, the door loock are brokens. I do nor recomended. I lost my momey. I have another reservation for Thursday 4 of april, and I an not going to present, I don care if i lost my money.
- peter s. (10/5): John is a great guy..everybody in town know him..it's definitely a must to spend some time there - There is an amizing terrace where you can meet travellers and share experiences
Authentic place!
- Charles L. (10/5): Wonderful place in an under-explored part of the island - The Culture House has a lot to offer it's guests. John and Tina are in the first class of hosts. They do more than make sure their guests have everything they need and are comfortable, they go out of their way to invite you to local events, lime, and discuss local politics. They are tucked into a corner of Connaree village that is quiet and yet still within walking distance (40 min on the beach) to the chaotic touristic hubub of Frigate Bay or a 10-minute drive from the Basseterre scene.
The room was clean and everything I wanted it to be. The balcony was a great breezy hangout spot perfect for reading. In it's price range, the Culture House is a top option. Some amenities not to expect in the price range: -AC (Though you don't need it on the windward side of the island) -Hot water (frankly the cold water on the island isn't as cold as you want it)
- Bizzygirl (8/5): More culture! - I chose this place because I like to experience a higher degree of personal relationships rather than a resort stay. John was nice, inviting, easy to talk to, informative, and had great tips. I recommend staying at culture house if you want to go away from town and high intensity.
- avril m (6/5): Good basic hotel - Good basic accommodation. John was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Good views from the veranda. Try the Caribbean breakfast which John cooks fresh.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Secluded and peaceful - Secluded one night stay. It was fine for a night, a more prolonged stay would not work.
- Dj (2/5): Please believe the reviews - When I read the review about the dogs and cats I thought the guest just didn't like animals, but I saw and smelled for myself. How can expedia even advertise this place. DO NOT GO THERE!!!!
- Stanley (8/5): Culture House in Conaree - My staying was excellent, for those who are looking for something out side the box away from the corporate hotels. If you don't mind a little bit of an adventure away from the main action, this hotel offers peace and an urban setting where you can heard the nature noises of the nights. My host John offers me many local ideas that you just don't get at those major hotels, the highlight was walking through the local roads leading to access for a nice beach walk + extra along the way.......it's all NICE!
- Oscar (6/5): Quite and peaceful, with nice pets - Nice experience in a relaxed place, If you have a car, everything is close, bars, restaurants and supermarkets.
- Verified traveler (4/5): No beach to talk about. Derelict - For the price, it is fairly Ok. But, there was no running water for me to bathe on the last day. The owner needs to do much better. The guest house needs an upgrade. Painting and facilities need to be better. The trees need to be trimmed so that the guest house is visible from far away. The vehicles in front of the gates are blocking the battered signage.
