Guest Reviews
- Stephanie (8/5): -
- Ian (7/5): The cottages have there on charm and the location is fantastic. The facilities are looking tired and need updating. - Location and size. Although the theme was rustic the facilities are tired and had been well used. It was expensive for a wonderfully view and location.
- Lorraine (9/5): -
- Jason (9/5): - Amazing people meet the owners. View was outstanding and access to the beach was easy
Great stories nice set up. Wish we could have stayed longer
- Jane Smathers (10/5): Fabulous pet friendly - I mean, you can not beat the location. The outlook is beautiful, it's quiet but close enough to shops if you need them.
The villa is built with old world charm but is a newer build. So much history. Comfy and perfect for our weekend away, with our large dog. (It was awesome to have yet another pet friendly accommodation option with our boy)
- David (10/5): I would come back anytime! - Lovely accommodation and location . Villia’s were stunning.
- Ruben (10/5): -
- Sandra (9/5): Peaceful, restful - Excellent location overlooking the ocean. Comfortable and cosy, with rustic charm.

- Sebastian (10/5): - Super schöne Unterkunft in traumhafter Lage
- Sandra (10/5): - Wunderschöne Lage und alles bestens. Wir würden jederzeit wieder buchen.
- Christopher (8/5): A different place to stay ɓy the sea - The location was superb, The building design was unusual but pleasant. Rustic The mezzanine floor concept was not ideal for two couples. Perhaps a privacy curtain to the down stairs bedroom. More comfortable chairs for the sitting area.
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jocilene (10/5): Lovely! - The place was incredible, with the sea right in front of us, and the moon was almost full!!! None
- Christie (10/5): Fantastic stay, our second time staying and we will be back again - Amazing location, super clean, cozy unique accommodation
- Helen (9/5): Relaxing beach and ocean views. - The location was fantastic and the ocean and beach views were amazing. It was a very chilled and relaxing place to stay. The kitchen was well equipped for self-catering and we only made the 10min trip to Ōākura once to visit Butler's Reef restaurant for tea - highly recommend this place for delicious food. Everything about the Villa was great. Families with kids and couples would enjoy staying here. The tap dripped at night, but placing the dishcloth underneath solved the problem. It would have been good to have air-con.
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional -

- Jodi (10/5): - We stayed here at the end of our trip and it was the perfect place to relax, enjoy the beautiful scenery and listen to the sounds of the surf and birds. Seth, Nuala and David all made a point of stopping by to see how we were settling in and it was lovely to read the history behind the creation of the villas. Cannot recommend this place enough - would still be there if we could ☺️
- Sereneione (10/5): Exceptional - Very peaceful and quiet, and very close to the beach. Very rustic and cosy and comfortable.

Rustic, ecologically designed and built.
Clean and nice attention to details.
- Happytraveller121 (10/5): Fabulous Stay! - Our family of three stayed at the Ahu Ahu Beach Villas for three nights in the Green Window Villa. We had a queen bed downstairs and two twin beds in the loft. Such an incredible stay at an amazing property! Our villa had everything we needed and it felt like home. We could have literally moved in! Bring your own groceries or stop at the Coundown Spotswood grocery store or the Four Square Oakura down the road to stock up. Coffee, tea, sugar and milk are available in the villa. There are many wonderful restaurants in the area including Toret Cucina Italiana. We ate there one night and the meal was delicious.
The villa is a great mix of eclectic vibe, cozy comfort and quiet serenity. We couldn’t wait to get back to the villa each day after touring the area to relax and unwind. A glass of wine outside while viewing the sea is magic! We walked on the nearly empty beach each night to watch the sunset. It’s a must each day of your stay! Or if you want, take a dip in the ocean. Don’t forget to shut off all the lights at night after dark and look at the star clustered sky. It’s truly an amazing sight!
Definitely read the photo book detailing the origins and history of the villas. You will appreciate your stay even more. It was such a pleasure to speak with Seth and David one day during our visit. We wish we could come back every year but alas, it’s much too far for us from the United States.
Thanks to everyone at Ahu Ahu Beach Villas for making our stay so magical! Everything was perfect!

It has stunning coastline views and the whole environment carries such wonderfully high warm and positive energetics for anyone wanting a cosy, loving retreat away. Disappointed that we didn't get to stay longer this time.
- James (10/5): Georgious property - highly recommended - The relaxed vibe, the amazing accommodation, the location, the pet friendly hosts. Everything basically! Nothing. WiFi was consistent but low strength signal. TBH unsure of speed because when you have such a georgious place and environment who wants to look at internet or TV?!

- Raewyn (10/5): Coastal getaway - Stunning coastline views the second you walk in. We loved this little cottage, overlooking the sea, rustic and full of character, that has been built with reclaimed timbers, old wharf beams and recycled windows, and so much more. Has a basic little kitchen and a BBQ outside, so we went prepared with easy to cook meals. You are a long way out of town, but that is what makes this bolthole special, it is quiet, with the roar of the sea just down the hill. Going back in the summer, for a different feel.
- carol (10/5): - Lovely setting and friendly hosts, thanks so much!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Outstanding location to stay and have a break. Highly recommend! Get in quick while you can get access to this amazingly beautiful and well located property.
- T J (10/5): Ahu Ahu - Great location, lovely Villas, very friendly welcome, recommend a visit!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing views, unique decor, very comfortable and super quiet. Short walk to the beach.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Unique property with architecture interests and cliff top view of the ocean. The sound of the tides has calming effect to put me into sleep and I loved that very much. The only very small thing is the water pressure of the shower is quite low.. but still highly recommended and I myself would love to come back to stay again
- Rebecca (10/5): - This is an outstanding property with spectacular views and very beautifully presented for a wonderful relaxing get away.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely accommodation with spectacular views. - The accommodation was lovely, well equipped and with spectacular views of the sea and beach.
The lack of air conditioning was however a bit of a drawback since this meant it was necessary to have windows open and then there were a lot of flies which came into the room. This seemed to be more of a problem on the day that the grass had been cut. Not sure if that's just coincidental or not.
The communal fire-pit was a real bonus. Our hosts were happy to provide logs and we had a fabulous final evening admiring the views in front of a lovely log fire.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great place close to the beach. - We enjoyed our stay but the flies were terrible. Thought there would be more privacy.
- Claire (10/5): An amazing sea view from a charming villa. - My school friend and I, now 65, visited Ahu Ahu Beach villas for a chance to catch up on old times and to explore the Taranaki area. We were enchanted by the rustic style of the villas and the quality of the furnishings and linen. There is a window seat looking out towards the wide sea view where we sat and talked for hours enjoying the sunset and watching the bird life hopping around on the grass. It is a quiet, relaxing setting.
It was a short walk down to the rugged west coast beach where there were few people, a lone fisherman, a couple walking their dog and some horse riders cantering along the sand.
A great place to get together with friends and enjoy a special part of New Zealand.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great two days - Not your usual motel unit. A mixture of old and new, second hand and new. Full of character. Kitchen well equipped and bed and linen all good quality. A great place to stay and relax for a couple of nights out of the city. Everything we needed and well worth the extra to stay here.
