Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (4/5): - No handy bedside light on one side of bed. Furniture is terribly outdated.
Rusty heater on wall. Rusty bedside light.
Broken kitchen cupboards.
Broken floor skirting board.
Only two drinking mugs, both stained. grubby tea-towel.
Overall condition of unit very poor and depressing.
- Teresa (6/5): Not worth price - Noisy as can hear other guests in their rooms. Think it is permanent housing for some. Outdated decor. Shower is for a very skinny person as have to squeeze between door & wall & turn shower on after in as water will hit door & go outside onto floor. Not the best parking. No extra blankets when cold, and old smelly wall heater.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Clean & Tidy - Room was clean & tidy but smelt of cigarette smoke, we are non smokers so I guess it affect us more.
- darts (2/5): Utterly disappointing - Grotty motel filled with social housing tenants on a busy noisey road. Shouting in the middle of the night, being watched by tenants sitting on balconies drinking and smoking, felt like we would get robbed as soon as we went out!
- Kenneth_Chow (4/5): Cheap but not particularly cheerful - Four of us stayed here over two stints during the Lions Tour of New Zealand 2017. We chose it due to the proximity to Auckland central and its value.
We now realised that there is a reason why this motel is so much cheaper than its Auckland counterparts. As soon as we arrived we felt that the building was in dire need of refurbishment. The room smelt of damp, one window would not open properly, and the shower platform failed to drain effectively, which meant that if you were not first to the shower then you will be standing in a puddle.
The facilities are basic, but sufficient if you just want a bed to sleep in and get by. There are clean towels provided daily and also free tea and coffee.
There is considerable noise from the main road (Te Atatu Road South) and also from adjacent rooms as the walls and floors are very thin.
Overall if you want any degree of luxury this is not the place to be, but if you only need a basic hotel to stay within reach of Auckland centre and the motorway then it is not a bad place to be for a night or two.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It's ok... - We stayed in this motel for two separate stints during the Lions Tour of 2017. At first sight the hotel looked in need of a refurbishment and a bit run down; however, the staff were friendly and helpful.
The room smelt of damp - probably because we arrived at the depth of winter. Unfortunately there were areas where it could certainly be improved on. The shower platform does not drain, so one is forced to shower in a puddle, and some of the windows do not open/close very well.
There is residual noise from the room but that is due to it being close to a main road (Te Atatu South).
There are some amenities near by, including a large supermarket and petrol station. There is on-site parking.
Overall this is an ok place to stay for a short while if you don't want to pay central Auckland prices, and is easy to get on the motorway to explore other parts of New Zealand, but I wouldn't stay here for as long as we did.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Table was dirty and sticky which in turn made us feel that it wasn't a very nice place to stay, water was hot in shower which was good though.
- Paul (6/5): Convenient motel for my area - Four nights at a convenient location. Old style motel looking rather tired, but adequately equipped for a short stay by a single person who doesn't want to self-cater. The room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and sweaty bodies, indicating that drapes, furnishings and bedspread etc need drycleaning, and the bed itself needs some sort of anti-bacterial treatment.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not a welcoming place, looks shabby outside and in - Police arrived, homeless people staying, won't be going back.
- shona (2/5): update required - Cigarette burns on carpet. Marks in hand basin. You needed to hold shower hose to wash as you were unable to point water down on to yourself. Skirting boards needed a clean. Police arrived to checkup on a person in one of the rooms. They had no vacancies.
- tina (2/5): Looks like a long term stay for terminal dolebound - Choose not to stay it looked dirty, receptionist was rude coat us $50 to cancel! Would not advise staying here
- 106marcinm (8/5): Good for 1 night - We had 1 bedroom apartment. Big bedrooms wtih also a lot of space in the living area. Wifi signal was ok. Close to the highway and we didn't want to stay in the city. Basic but depends what you need. Good value.
- George (2/5): Never again - Never again... noise all night and think it was the owners rather than other guests.
- Hilary (8/5): Overnight stay - Just stayed overnight. Check in easy. Room comfortable. Would have liked hair drier in room
- judith (4/5): Disappointed - Booked and prepaid for 3 nights, we where aware that it was possibly going to be shabby because of the resonable room rate so that wasnt going to be a problem.
What we found was there are semi permanent government funded residents living there who come and go in vehicles all night , will sit and talk with each other (or on their mobiles) on bbq tables placed right outside our ranchsider with our bed right there - they slammed their ranchsliders and made no attempt to be considerate .....managment was very good and refunded 2 nights so we could leave but we got NO sleep
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Was disappointed with the condition of the room. Two power points in key locations didn't work, the shavers socket was falling out of the wall and the overall cleanliness wasn't that great. For the price we payed for one night the conditions should have been far greater.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Appears to be a live-in motel, which is a bit awkward. Facilities were average. No hair dryer in room. Noise from street not bad even with the roadworks going on right outside.
- AndrewK_QLD (2/5): What a dive...... - This place was disappointing the moment I walked in the door. Very very basic - over priced, over rated and undesierable.
Had a musky and urine smell (which was the tea towel), noisy long term residents.
Look, the list could go on for ever, but the placed should lose it licence to operate.
ABSOLUTE CRAP
- Verified traveler (2/5): Old and neglected. - No actual sign saying Sunset Lodge just Motel so thankfully we had our Google Maps to say we'd arrived. The motel is old and run down and lacking in ground and property maintenance. If there had been anything else available in Auckland we wouldn't have stayed after seeing it from the road - I actually tried to call a few from the car before we even drove in!! There are cigarette stains on the dated vanity and no working lights or power points in the bathroom. Decor is from the 70s/80s at best. Bed was HARD; we don't mind a firm matress but this was something else! While the room 'smelt' clean...it wasn't. The office stank of stale cigarette smoke...but the quiet Asian man behind the desk was friendly and helpful. That's really the only positive I can give.
- db (8/5): handy to the motorway - Although the road was subject to road works thats to be expected in auckland. Service was prompt beds were comfortable. The shower was quite tiny so I dont know how big breasted women would manage to close the door. But it was nice and hot. If you ever want to walk from western springs to the motel the north west cycle track is ideal well lit and takes one hour 50 minutes. Getting a car out of parking or trying to find a taxi could take that long. the trip to the Bombays took 40 minutes leaving at 9.30. So all in all the guns concert was great accommodation handy and we must have flucted the traffic madness
- Millie (10/5): Comfortable & Convenient - Comfortable with affordable price.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Not a great place to stay, felt very unsafe with many people coming and going throughout the night. Rooms rented out hourly.
- Jason (2/5): Horrible place. - Horrible. Looks like its being used for winz beneficiary temporary accommodation. Music played until 7 am. Visitors coming and going all throughout the night. Tenants smoking P (meth).
- Sandy (2/5): Not what we expected - Motel run down gardens untidy and swimming pool is of limits now for owners use only. Not one night decent sleep as permanent people living there are very active all night and too much noise made by them at night. Our room was bearly serviced. They was blood on the walls and doors which I had to clean up myself as it was there when we arrived. I would not recommend or stay again.
- flick (2/5): Unclean motel - This motel was the worst I have stayed with, cobwebs round the ceiling, dusty skirting boards, no pool yet adverts display pool, kitchen curtains when pulled dropped dust over sink, hair in the shower tray
- Judy (4/5): Checked out early - Motel not looking as good as I remember, road works didn't help.
Couldn't fault the cleanliness of the room A plus for that, the owners very understanding when I complained about the noise coming from the room above still going at 1:30 am and gave me my money back. This is due to the upstairs units being let out long term.
I think Expedia should let people know that this is happening and good on the owners for utilizing their business.
- Mary (4/5): Sunset Lodge Overnight stay - We had booked a 2 bedroom unit , but on arrival were told it was actually 2 1 bedroom units. The units were clean.
but 1 unit smelt strongly of stale cigarette smoke. Found bed very hard and curtains were very poor quality and let in a lot of light.
Would never stay here again.
- JeanC503 (6/5): Good for one night stay - Good value for one night stay.Very clean and tidy. Owners/managers very obliging even if they struggled to understand english. Parking adaquate but the road works on theTe Atatu road make it very difficult to get into. This has been like it nearly two years according to the locals. If you have mobility problems ask for a downstairs room. No way would our bathroom accomodate a wheelchair, the shower being the smallest I have ever seen and tucked behind the door.
- tracey (4/5): dont do it!!!! - beds were extremely hard, we had to ask for additional topper pads, hotel looks like people live there as we witnessed several domestic incidents, no engagement from staff to see how our visit was going, one of our parties relocated due to condition of the motel, and found something way nicer close to town
- L J (2/5): Not good value money very disappointed - Not good value money very disappointed
- Verified traveler (6/5): Pleasant staff but tired rooms - Room was very tired and very much in need of refurbishing . Hearing was a bar heater on the wall and inadequate to heat the room .
- Verified traveler (6/5): not a lot of choice on Te Atatu Peninsula - For the price i would expect more in the way of facilities.
It is very basic but clean apart from a sticky floor which i think may be the result of the cleaning product used.
having said that the bed is comfortable with an electric blanket which was needed as there is only one small heater fixed to the wall.
The staff are friendly
the only reason I would recommend it is because there is not a lot else in the area
- 428judithg (10/5): Enjoyable Motel Stay - Arrived at the Sunset Lodge 312 Te Atatu Road Te Atatu Auckland 4th June 2016, great location to everything, very nice welcome, had the choice of ground floor or upstairs, chose the latter easy walk up, nice and bright with a pleasant view, parking excellent, motel unit beautifully clean, old and dated but very spacious for a studio, queen bed, chairs to relax on nice table and chairs, kitchen with 4 hot plates and m/w, fridge more than adequate, shower etc basic but very functional, instant hot water wonderful, T.V. good, heating and electric blanket, bedding excellent no bugs, bed comfortable, pillows good. Extremely clean sunny basic unit @ $120 per day double. Would highly recommend this Motel, Owners I think Japanese very obliging even ran out with battery operated hand held water vac to get rid of the condesation on the car windows in the morning. Now that is service ,so friendly.
WiFi number connection taped to the coffee table.
Would be many years since we have used motels bed was always made daily, not so at this place, perhaps this is something new. We were there for 4 days, as this was a treat for us would have been the icing on the cake to have had the bed made daily. Always fresh towels etc.no complaints there.
- keithm5563 (6/5): very noisy with road traffic and residents - Found some of the residents who I believe are permanent are very noisy. Units seemed OK very dated these units have been in this area for over 35 years and I think some of the fittings are the original ones.
- Sharon (8/5): - Nice enough but very dated and in desperate need of a spruce up. Great location.
- Sporty Travel (8/5): Comfortable stay handy to Western motorway - We needed a place to rest during a sports event held over the weekend. Lovely rest, comfortable beds, lots of room, very clean, friendly reception at check in. The décor reminds me of the 70-80s - has plenty of character. Great cooking and eating facilities.
- Joan (6/5): Convenient for our needs - The motel is an older style so do not expect luxury. Priced ok all linen changed daily except bed which is not made either. The staff were helpful and friendly. Mattress firm but I liked that. Shower recess in room 2 very small as narrow door opens inwards tight for plus sizes. We stayed as it was close to Trust stadium.
- Shirley (8/5): Pleasing stay - The lady in reception was a pleasure to deal with on arrival. No problems. and a cheery wave on leaving.
- Hughie (6/5): Weekend Stay. - Stay was fare, Cleaning Staff great,Only problem the shower unit needs fixing couldn't lower it. Also bathroom window needs repairs, Open window had to lift to close, the left side has drop. Would have liked a bin in bathroom , for ladies needs,Better Sky Tv program's Traffic heavy.
- CJL (6/5): Adequate - Not the best, not the worst, in this price range. Kitchenette OK, though one of the 4 rings on the stove was not working. Air-conditioned. Coin-operated washing machine and dryer (can get change from reception). Could be a little cleaner. Otherwise quite adequate for a short stay not too far from the city.
- Deanna (8/5): - Good motel. Great for motorway access. Good rooms for families however found to be a bit dirty, there were bugs stuck all over the ceiling in bathroom and wall behind oven was dirty and underneath sink in bathroom was black. Also microwave did not work.
- mary (6/5): easy to find - despite it's reputation locally staff were pleasant hotel could have been a bit cleaner but you gat what you payfor
- RaisedByCats (8/5): Convenient to Motorway - As mentioned in previous reviews, this hotel is a little tired but clean with pleasant staff. I had a room away from the road and it was quiet. There is no air conditioning, but a fan was provided. The shower door opens inwards so wouldn't be suitable for a stout person.
It is very close to the Te Atatu on ramp meaning that even at rush hour you can get on the motorway without a massive wait.
Generally given how cheap is is, this is very good value. There was no "ick" about it, just tired.
- Stephanie (2/5): Noisy disruptive hotel - Hotel refused to clear the noisy teens in the carpark, who vomited on my car at night. Partner and I got no sleep as they were jumping in the pool and throwing bottles around. Never staying again.
- spekeow (6/5): cheap, not so cheerful - My partner & I stayed here as it was the closest available place available that didnt charge through the roof. Other friends ended up staying here too so we could all be at the same place, and share a cab.
Yes, its dated - But the room was clean & comfortable enough. Firm mattress, but I like that. It was a hot summers day, there was no aircon, so just getting ready, hair/makeup etc was sweaty work. Thankfully the room had a fan, as it took some edge off the muggy hot weather, but not quite enough. Sleeping on the hot evening/morning was tough, but if the fan wasnt there it would of been unbearable.
The shower had good pressure. But the shower door was badly designed. It opened inwards, requiring awkward manoeuvres to get around it & inside to close it. If I was a few more inches wider, I wouldnt be able to close it. Weird!
Didnt use the wifi but it was free. Good to have free parking. was stoked they had sky sport as we watched some cricket, the picture was a bit buzzy, but manageable (didnt check any other channels...).
The not so cheerful part - Our friends came to our unit to have a catchup before we headed to our event. We cracked a couple of beers to cool down (it was hot) & stood/sat down on the chairs outside our unit. We were by no-means 'rowdy' (honestly!), just 1-2 beers max & talking. The manager came over to tell us he had complaints and for us to quiet down & go inside. This was at 2pm. I know the manager was just responding to another guests issue, but would they complain if there were kids staying & playing & making noise in the pool during the day & what would the manager do in that circumstance? If noise was made after dinner time I would understand the complaint, but not in the middle of the day. Come-on, its not a library.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - But of a dive, kinda like a crack dealers mini ghetto is the feeling from the location on main rd and initial view, run by Asians who do their best with what it is, you can easily fun better for a few more dollars.
- onemadkiwi (4/5): Most bizzare a shower door - Ok the last time I was staying in west Auckland I looked at this motel but walked out after a room inspection
Staying again in west Auckland ive found that some of the others out this way have been increasing there prices so had a look around and did another inspection of the above motel
Theres been an attempt to modernise the interior well of unit one that I ended up in anyway like new carpet and other bits and pieces but my god the funniest thing ive ever seen in my life was the shower door
The shower used to have a curtain but now has a door very narrow it was too but its bloody well hinged the wrong way so it opens inwards
If you step into the shower you push the door in and there is no space to get around it to close the door what a crack up so I ended up having a shower with the door wide open and water going everywhere
The owners need to keep it up with updating things even down to the microwave which looks like it was the first model ever made
On the plus side all the tv channels were there plus a few sky channels and the parking was free as it should be compared to another motel in sel peacock drive Henderson which charges $10 a night to park in their carpark
But at the end of the day $110 a night in jafaland is a rarity these days
- Verified traveler (6/5): Adequate - This motel was fine , the price was right , and the experience was very much on par with other motels in the price range. Helpful and pleasant owner operators
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Totally fine for what we were after - simple, straightforward, accessible.
- Hui (8/5): The owner was nice, friendly. - short stay and it was a good one. room was big enough, in Auckland cycle.
- vcc-group (6/5): Convenient and fairly reasonable - We have been staying here twice a year for the past 5 years but have noticed a decline in condition, with little or no maintenance. Walls and skirting boards and around the cooker and microwave need a good clean, although bedding, bathroom and sink areas are all clean. Much in need of ripped wallpaper being removed and walls painted for easier cleaning. Otherwise comfortable.
- Virginia (6/5): freedom - close to the people I needed to see
- Mark (6/5): Sunset Lodge, Henderson - Stayed for a night when a Henderson the next day. Was convenient. Took a little time getting out of the Motel on a busy road.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice clean hotel - Over all Good experience friendly and helpful staff
- G. Owen (8/5): Sunset - Basic, clean unit. Short on utensils if doing own cooking etc.
Comfortable king size bed with firm mattress.
Towels changed daily. Helpful staff.
- onemadkiwi (2/5): Run Down - I booked to stay a couple of nights and on arriving asked for a room inspection, I did this as on driving into the place it looks so run down and old
Had a walk around in the unit and clean looking but everything is so dated good for maybe under a hundred dollars a night but not the prices those people were charging
Plus it was empty only one car in the place that must be saying something
Ended up staying elsewhere
- Gina (6/5): Quiet and easy access to motorway - Rooms were tidy, clean, and warm, with everything we needed including TV with lots of channels and some books in the office. Price was good, so we didn't mind that it wasn't fancy. Also, it was able to host our large family (that day, 1 adult and 4 kids...not all mine!!).
- Verified traveler (8/5): great value for money - nice spaceous and clean rooms. looks nicer on the inside than on the outside. our room was a little loud at night (road noise), that was only complaint.
- KDL364 (6/5): Good value - This is the 2nd time we have stayed here. Units are older style but good value for money, clean and comfortable. Comfy beds, good location for visitors to Westwave Pool, short drive to Henderson. Staff are helpful. Free wifi a plus.
- R1792XAmiked (6/5): Sports Team Visit - We had a large group of secondary school students (high school) attending the national underwater hockey championships. We were close to the pool venue - west wave aquatic centre only 5 mins drive - cheap & cheerful - rooms were fine, we wanted cheap, but still warm & cosy. Rooms adequate, warm, decent TV with sky. Towels replaced each day, the place did the job, would book again, served the purpose. Group price was good
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Quite a run down place. On a noisy road.
- Sis (8/5): Was handy to the two places we had to go. - The couple were both very helpful to us for finding our way round. We found it differcult to get in and out of the shower as the door opened the wrong way. There needed maintenance, (work not finished) at the floor entrance of the shower.
- wooza12 (6/5): Large comfy self contained older unit - 1 bed unit $150 for our family. King size bed. 2 singles in sep room. Table and chairs.Clean comfy kitchen oven microwave etc. free wifi. Electric blankets. 2 heaters wall heater and portable small oil filled heater but may need more in winter?? Pool is small and weather was too cold to try it out. Pretty busy road but was quiet enough inside set back off road. Motoway very handy. City pretty close. We had downstairs room. Servo walking distance
- Juki_13 (2/5): Smoker's paradise - If you are a non-smoker, think very seriously before booking into this Motel. The rooms are meant to be non-smoking, but guests are permitted to smoke directly outside the rooms. This means that the rooms smell of smoke. If you are smoke-sensitive, it is a very uncomfortable experience indeed. There is no real understanding of what a non-smoking environment should mean. Ashtrays are provided, right next to the no smoking and 'we provide a smoke free environment' signs. If you are a smoker, this is the motel for you.
- RoyMaree (10/5): Pretty good price, neat and tidy! Good service and friendly staff :) happy to stay here. - Me and my partner was looking for motel in Auckland and central motels are bit too expensive for us. So I was looking for outside if central Auckland and found this motel. It is cheaper than other place and also food location. Very close to motorway and just 15min away from city. Facility is bit old but still great in this price. I arrived around 10 pm and they still serve us very friendly and room was cozy and bed was comfortable. Highly recommend this motel if you are looking for reasonable price motel ;)
- BarbaraS787 (6/5): Adequate - Bedlinen very clean and spotless, comfortable bed. Very basic kitchen with small microwave, limited cutlery and crockery, good access to free wireless internet, sky tv. Not a lot of heating unfortunately and I was there in the winter. Very small shower, overall I enjoyed my stay though.
- AliK676 (6/5): Served its purpose - pretty sweet, the rooms had an oven which could be handy and a Wendys, pharmacy and liquor store 5 mins walk away. And bus sttop to downtown too.
The main road is right out front which was a bit loud but all good
