Guest Reviews
- Colin (8/5): Delightful cottage in a quiet setting. Central to bike/walking trails. -
- Iain (9/5): Perfect place. - Perfect location, comfortable bed and ideal for practising my bagpipes prior to competing in the Hastings Highland Games the next day. Nothing
- oanne (10/5): Absolutely charming cottage - I loved everything about the cottage. The calm location, the flowery setup and the absolutely beautifully decorated spacious cottage. The bed was super comfortable and I enjoyed the evening sun on the little terrace. The owner was not around when I arrived and left me the keys in the appartment, allowing for a very easy check in. I did not have time to stay longer : )
- jean (10/5): - After two months travelling, Clive Colonial Cottages was easily the best accommodations of our entire trip.
Rachel & Tony are low key hosts allowing guests to enjoy peace and quiet of Hawkes Bay Napier area.
We appreciated having a stand alone abode for our three night /four day visit.
I picked fresh lemons and pears off the trees on the premises, with the chickens looking on. We used the fruit to prepare a wonderful home cooked meal in the well equipped Tui Cottage kitchen. It was a perfect stay!
Hitting the nearby bike trails to the wineries was a must-do!
Save yourself the headache and bother and rent your bikes directly from The Clive Cottages. Nothing beats the convenience of walking out your cottage door and onto your bike first thing in the morning! We have no complaints.
Clive Cottages was a perfect visit.
- Loretta (9/5): Amazing place - Comfortable beds, great facilities. Lovely and close to a walkway. Easy to travel around. No interaction with the owners.

- Adam (9/5): Excellent spot for a family stay with kids - The beds were very comfortable, with a good range of pillow options. We came with two young children and they loved the fairy garden, the crocodile in the pond, feeding the chickens, eating the grapefruit and playing on the tramp. It was comfortable, quiet and a serene environment with enough excitement to keep children amused.
- Lea-Ann (9/5): -
- Monika (9/5): - Das Cottage ist von einer wunderbaren Gartenanlage umgeben, war sehr sauber und es war ruhig. Die Unterkunft liegt nahe am Strand und wir konnten 2 gute Fahrräder ausleihen.
- Alison (9/5): Clive is a beautiful quite location but close to everything by car - Beautiful private courtyard with surrounding cottages but all screened from each other. Loved the water feature statue- if you ask Tony there is a story behind this. I would have liked more than 1 coat hanger in the wardrobe and the bed was a bit soft but that’s just a personal thing.😃
- Rebecca (10/5): Best in Clive. - 💖💖💖 we have stayed at various places over the years but this stay trumped everything over the past 10 + yrs of going to Clive. Everything was Perfect. Clean, homely and so comfortable. Nothing. Everything was fabulous!
- Michael (10/5): - Ganz tolles Cottage
Sehr gemütlich
War ein sehr schöner Aufenthalt
- Lyndon Hamlyn (10/5): - Fantastic setting Nothing of note, bathroom ceiling fan is noisy when in use( needs attention) otherwise everything else perfect.

- Grace (10/5): Well appointed, picturesque, comfortable cottage - Adorable little cottage, everything was immaculate. So quiet and restful, beautiful starry sky. From the lovely grounds and fountain courtyard to the chooks pecking through the yard, we loved everything about our stay. Beaches and wineries nearby made for interesting exploring. Nothing
- Jennifer (8/5): Very good -
- Sally (7/5): We enjoyed staying there and found the beds comfortable. - The cottage was charming and comfortable, and suitable for a short stay as it is quite small. There could have been more crockery and glasses provided. Bearing in mind the cottage sleeps 4 (our group were 3 in number), there were only two water glasses, and there were just 4 of everything else.
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional - The accommodation is extremely comfortable and clean. It is a fabulous peaceful location, lovely to listen to the bird song.
The games room and petanque were a big hit.
Borrowed bicycles and cycled to a local vineyard. Fabulous area for cycling with miles of flat cycle paths.
- Elena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rolf (10/5): Exceptional - Peaceful Nothing
- Ian (8/5): Very good - Good location and comfortable stay overall. Washing facilities not in house but external and communal.
Hosts not very communicative.
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - Lovely, rural location. A short drive to Napier, Hastings and Havelock North.
The unit was very well appointed and comfortable with quality fittings, furnishings, kitchen utensils, etc. Netflix was complimentary. There's nothing that comes to mind.
- Jane (10/5): Hope to revisit - the best accomodation on our trip. - The location is very peaceful. The cottage is private and kept to a high standard. Guests' needs have been carefully considered. A softer pillow would have been appreciated.
- Isabelle (9/5): Cottage in quiet location - Quiet. Clean. Convenient location.
- Fofoga (9/5): Superb -
- Trish (10/5): We loved the relaxing atmosphere and enjoyed feeding the chickens our scraps! - A quiet, comfortable and relaxing property.
- Barry (10/5): Great property , just love it. - No breakfast sorry, but the kitchen had everything, so we made our own, just a wonderful place Over all the property was excellent
- Willy (9/5): Superb -
- Fraser (10/5): Exceptional - Well maintained rental bikes available and close to the awesome cycle trail network, great stay!
- Phil (8/5): would recommend as suitable for short to medium stays, quiet location, clean property - adequate space for 6 day stay, clean and well-stocked, comfy bed, good bathroom, quiet location
- Debi (9/5): Best of both worlds conveniently located rural setting near to coast, cycle trails and restaurants. - The quiet rural location with lovely gardens so near Napier and the coast and the cycle trails.
Bike rental was really convenient and enabled us to experience cycling along the flat coastal route to Napier.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Geoff (9/5): Superb - Spacious, quiet, comfortable
- Michael (10/5): Relaxing stay in quality accommodation which was well positioned to visit Napier and several nearby winerie. - Very clean, comfortable, equipped with everything you need and presented very smartly. In a pleasant quiet country setting. We only wished we had more time to have stopped for longer. Nothing
- Dale (8/5): Very nice cottage’s comfortable and in lovely gardens. - Sweet apartment and pretty garden. Netflix account for the cottage was good. Tiny breakfast!
- Haywood (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful clean, modern cottage with Devine gardens and loads of birdsong. The garden was a visual feast along with perfume from the roses and so quiet. The sun streamed onto the porch where I sat in the late afternoon with a glass of wine. Very private, quiet and so close to Napier and Hastings. It's an absolute little gem. Loved the wee cat that came and visited for a cuddle and the very cute elderly dog who welcomed me in the morning. Totally perfect. Leaving.
- Marilou (10/5): Outstanding!! Best stay we had in North New Zealand. - The warm welcome from Rachel. Privacy of a cosy cottage. Wonderful surrounding garden. Excellent location for cycle trails. Unbeatable bike rental prices.
- Helen (9/5): Superb -
- Mischelle (10/5): Beautiful, best I've ever stayed at! - very clean & Serene, beautiful!!
- Aelorah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ms (9/5): Superb - My mom is on her wheel chair ♿️ and she's seems to enjoy easy access.
She enjoys all facilities and a very comfortable bed.
Other members of my family enjoyed the stay.
Thank you very much for your hospitality.
We'll choose to stay at your place again for our future visit. Nothing.
- Andreas (10/5): A very comfortable and enjoyable experience. Will be back. - Beautiful cottages in a lovely rural setting. And very well appointed. Ideally situated to explore Napier, Havelock North, Cape Kidnappers and Hastings- especially by bicycle as the cottages are very close to the Hawkes Bay cycle track network.
- Qingchun (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! Charming cottages with all the amenities we needed, and the grounds are also lovely.
- Lorraine (9/5): Would certainly stay here again. The hosts have thought of extras to enjoy your stay. - Location was within walking distance to the pebble beach. Lovely and peaceful surroundings. The morning bird calls were awesome. The cottage was well equipped and nice and warm.
- Chloe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely private place to stay.
- Elena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tonia (10/5): Great location. Fantastic accomodation. Very friendly and hospitable owners. Rally enjoyed my stay! - The owners run a self check-in service, and the key was ready and waiting for me where they said it would be - made life easy as I didn't have to worry about when I was going to get there (and the heinous roadworks on the way from Taupo extended my estimated time of arrival rather a lot! Nothing ! The cottages are in a great location - I was there was sporting event for my daughter, and it was about 12 mins to the swimming pool. It is right next to a beach and a cycle trail. 5 mins from the nearest little village, with a coffee shop and bar.
- Mary (9/5): Enjoyable stay for our three nights - Cosy, well appointed kitchen. Pleasant garden and beautiful chickens! Ideally located for getting on to the bike trail. And a nice little games room had a pool table books games etc to while away the evening Attractive formal garden around the cottages but the pretty statue looked like it needed a scrub!
- Chris (9/5): Superb -
- Lynette (10/5): Peace full . Lovely family owned and run country escape. - Quiet secluded location but not to far to drive or cycle to village shops and pub. There was nothing not to like.
- Khan (8/5): Very good -
- Amy (9/5): Private, comfortable stay. - Location was great. Beach walking distance and very private.
- Wanda (10/5): Perfect in every way -
- Theresa (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely and quiet, private. Clean and tidy. Nice location handy to Hastings, Havelock and Napier.
- Richard (10/5): The cottage was beautifully designed and decorated and the gardens lovely. - The location was excellent. It was close to the wineries yet convenient to visit Napier. Nothing. One of Rachel's chickens had a lot of attitude but we liked her anyway. (The cocky white hen.)
- Robert (10/5): We had the most comfortable stay in beautiful surroundings, definitely our best stay in New Zealand - Everything we might need had been thought of, the gardens were beautiful and so was the cottage. Everything was well-maintained to a high standard. Our hosts were very friendly and welcoming and even came to collect us when we had a bike puncture on a trip. Nothing!
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, each cottage private, great games room and amazing setting. Central spot for exploring Hawkes Bay. Really really clean, comfy beds, good shower. Nothing!
- Margret (8/5): Very much a peaceful retreat and we look forward to returning. - Great location, very quite (we live with city noise) loved the gardens which made the cottage very private.
Exceptionally clean and well ventilated. Enjoyed fresh eggs for breakfast provided by the host. Nothing to not like.
- R (10/5): A very relaxing and comfortable stay. Very easy parking. - Muesli and coffee, tea, chocolate and biscuits were all provided. There were good cooking facilities. The gardens around the property were lovely and there was a fountain in the middle of the courtyard around which the 3 cottages were located. This proved to be a good meeting place in the evening. There was nothing to dislike.
- Dennis (10/5): Exceptional - A beautiful little cottage in a group of three with a common courtyard which was beautifully landscaped. The cottage was incredibly clean and wonderful. A short walk to the beach. We loved our stay there, and highly recommend it.
- Brian (10/5): Very relaxing - Excellent location to visit both Napier and Hastings, the cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.. would 100% recommend and definitely stay again if we were in the area. Leaving
- Rachel (9/5): Superb -
- Oksana (10/5): It's a lovely place. One of the best I've been to. - Clean, cozy, quiet, had everything we needed The bed was too soft for my partner
- Kristina (9/5): It was a lovely stay -
- Madhur (8/5): Had a great time with family. Enjoyed the stay. - Instructions were clear and precise. Very nice and clean cottage. Bathroom was spacious and clean. Nice arrangement of complimentary tea, coffee, milk etc. Pillows were too big for comfort. Dining chairs wobble, needs strengthening. AC is ineffective for bedrooms on hot days.
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): Would definitely recommend!! - Check in was quick and easy, thanks Tony and Rachel. The property is well maintained. Our family was in the two bedroom cottage (Bluebell) and although the property shared with 2 other cabins, it was set up so privacy was not an issue. Very quiet and relaxing. Cleanliness and comfort were exceptional. Lots of little extras (games, bike rental, chickens….). Definitely a recommendation.
- Rachelle (10/5): Lovely private cottage between Napier and Hastings. Comfy beds and we love the garden! - The ease of checking in the property with the clear instructions provided by the owners. I like how they were easily contactable and replies promptly to our messages. The shower and toilet albeit very spacious has no divider (e.g. glass/door) only shower curtain so there is an unavoidable overflow of water on the floor outside the shower which can be a safety issue. A squeeqee has been provided with a long handle to address this. You just need to just wipe the water out immediately after using the shower to avoid this. On the other hand, I like that the shower has handles which are ideal for people with mobility concerns and looking for this kind of set up while on a holiday.
- Lloyd (8/5): Very good -
- Eleanor (9/5): A tranquil getaway. If you are in town on a Sunday, the Hawke's Bay Farmers Market is a must! - These cottages are in such a lovely setting. Ours was impeccably clean and tastefully decorated. The friendly chickens greeted us upon arrival. Coffee, spreads, milk, and 4 packets of cereal were waiting for us in the kitchen. Rachel kindly supplied us with some eggs from the chickens when we asked. No complaints. My only suggestion is to update the welcome guide to reflect that bread and eggs are no longer supplied.
- Richard (8/5): Very good - Friendly, helpful hosts and lovely clean cottage.
- Brigid (9/5): Superb - Garden Be nice if some butter sachets came with condiments supplied as was caught out thinking there must be some (obviously I didn't check fridge) so bought some bread to toast only to find needed butter as well.
- Tamara (10/5): Relaxed country stay - The property is cleverly designed so small but perfect. It’s also just out of town, so quiet.
Beds are comfortable so had a good sleep. Nothing!!
- Emma (8/5): Lovely cottage in quiet location - Lovely cottage in quiet location
Clean and tidy
Able to get the RWC on room TV
Given a handy map with closed bike paths to plan our vineyard ride easier
Close to waterfront
Location was good for the Cape kidnappers Trail run, we were able to zip back and shower/have lunch before the prize giving
But it is a good 25km bike ride to the main cluster of vineyards Unfortunately the games room was under refurbishment
Recycling was encouraged but only one bin in cottage. A 2nd bag would have been useful to separate and transport to outside recycle bins (granted we didn't get around to asking for another as we were in and out all day)
- Franklin (10/5): Lovely stay in country cottage - Very cute cottage with everything you need. Quiet . Easy parking. Lovely gardens surrounding the cottage
- Rowena (10/5): Exceptional - Beautifully presented and the customer has been well thought of with amenities
- Derek (9/5): Superb -
- Shane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (9/5): Enjoyed it - Plenty to do in fine or inclement weather
- Helen (8/5): Very good - The frypan, awful
- Felicity (10/5): Thank you so much for letting me stay.. God bless. - Loved the privacy. Hated leaving.
- Brian (8/5): Very good - super rooms and great location bbq & eating area very overgown and dirty - ran out of gas bottle on pizza oven after 2 gas bottles got it going again
- Maggie (10/5): Cosy, quiet, private.Comfortable bed and pillows.very clean. - Was not expecting a generous starter pack for breakfast, juice, cereals, fruit juice, jams etc.Thank you, very much appreciated. Nothing, all perfect.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - Rachel, Ambience. Rachel. Amenities.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chloe (9/5): Young Family of 4 holiday - Friendly greeting on arrival
Location central to Napier and hastings
Grounds and amenities extremely clean and tidy
Close walk to the beach
Bbqs, tramp, outdoor chess, great gardens and picnic areas with tables, shed to store kids bikes in, games room with pool table, can hire bikes from them also. Range hood in the room we either couldn't figure out how to to work it or it wasn't working?
Kitchen seemed small compared to the other cottages not alot of bench space.
Mozzies! So many! But expected for the area as advised by the owners so just take bug spray and some anthistan bug cream.
