Guest Reviews
- Paschal (9/5): Very pleasant stay, Hunter Valley. - Very clean throughout, very comfortable bed, excellent breakfast, very relaxing place to spend a while. Good place from which to visit local vineyards (bus will pick you up from hotel so you can enjoy wine tastings). The building is actually an old wooden-structured convent which was relocated from elsewhere and reassembled - very interesting story, details displayed at hotel. Marvellous spot. No complaints
- Claire (9/5): Lovely place. Worth a visit. - A very cute hotel in the Hunter Valley. Really nice that it has Peppertree Wines on its estate as well as the Circa Restaurant. Room was Very comfortable although a little tired. There was often a nasty smell when walking in the grounds, possibly something to do with the wine making but not sure.
- Jane (9/5): Beautiful location and old-world feel - Lovely hotel with gorgeous decor and surrounds. Bathroom is very large and access to balcony is lovely at the front of the property. The bed was a little hard and could be better if king-sized.
- ROS (8/5): Lovely relaxing place that needs a bit of maintenance - Beautiful setting! Breakfast was limited; not good group areas with tea/coffee or glasses for wine easily available or a fire/heater
- D (8/5): Perfect weekend away - Beautiful grounds, staff were exceptional, breakfast croissants were amazing The walls need better sound proofing as it was difficult to sleep in on the ground floor as we could hear people talking in the lobby and the adjacent external door opening and closing frequently.
- Alex (10/5): -
- Minjun (10/5): - Well maintained heritage mansion and classical mood was good. Room was cozy and bed was comfortable. Breakfast is not value for money
- Evangelos (6/5): Loved the area, would not stay again unless upgraded - The location the external look the staff and the breakfast Room was old and tired bathroom needed upgrade they had a makeshift square toilet seat on a round toilet no attention to detail
- Minjun (10/5): Good and unique experience - Unique and not too crowded To simple and boring breakfast
- Paul (9/5): cracking stay, and would definitely return - Breakfast was exceptional and cook to perfection, the staff were friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. the staff kept us informed of our early checkin. I would highly recommend There was not much, the door to the bathroom could use some oil, and the cistern needs a new flow. just minor things
- Cathy (10/5): One of my dreams came true to stay at The Convent. 🩷😁 - We loved the old world charm, it was beautiful. Nothing
- terri (7/5): - Location. Grounds. room Breakfast facilities. Set menu price. Restaurant not open
- Shyamani (8/5): -
- Humberto (9/5): Great place to stay - Friendly staff and great location None
- Madeline (9/5): -
- Lucy (7/5): Historic house. Good location. Needs an upgrade inside. Expensive. Pretty gardens and surroundings. - The Convent is a lovely historic building. Breakfast was nice and had a few choices.
It was a pretty location and staff were friendly. Bedroom was comfy and large. Bathroom perfectly adequate. We had two rooms next to each other with a connecting balcony that was good, especially in the early morning sun. There was a small pool (didn't use) and a tennis court (also didn't use) Neither were mentioned to me on arrival. The Convent had no evening dinning facilities, no in-room service either which forced us to leave to find an evening meal. The rooms and decor are old fashioned and probably need some refreshing. Overall it was a lovely spot and pretty building, not sure it was value for money for the one night and we arrived later in day (due to wine tour- which i assume many people do) and left after breakfast next day. A shame they didn't have any evening food offers which forces you to leave the property again. Shower in the bath, which isn't very modern nowadays, decor was more glitzy/Italianate than historic Australian house. Inside didn't really match with outside. Breakfast waitress was sure to tell us what was included in our cost and not a thing more! Lacking in generosity here.
- Anita (5/5): Well located to access all the Hunter has to offer. Small, older style, rooms. The property in general is crying out for - Location Felt very run down, in need of a renovation. Staff were very kind and professional.
- Stuart (5/5): Beautiful old building and grounds but room could do with a good clean and some maintenance. - Beautiful old property with leafy green grounds The room was not very clean with mould around the air conditioning duct which had been painted over. The bathroom needs work. Not worth the price paid.
- Philippe (9/5): - Très bon hôtel, bien situé avec de bonnes prestations Le bruit des climatiseurs extérieurs
- John (10/5): A truly memorable place. We loved seeing the kangaroos roaming about. - Lovely rural setting. Wonderful breakfast and very friendly and helpful staff. Gave great recommendations on wineries and places for dinner.
- Belinda (5/5): Not a place we would return to or recommend - Location and setting Tired looking. Poor road surface to car park. Toilet had not been cleaned - splatters around bowl. Staff seemed downbeat. A bit of a depressing stay. Expensive for what you got. Two coffees rip off. Bottle of water in room $12.00! It was my wife’s birthday so lucky it was only one night.
- Ranka (9/5): A wonderful experience to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We would comeback, - It was a lovely experience to stay in a grand old home.
Wonderful location, peaceful and very relaxing. The accommodation was nice, we had a beautiful large room.
The breakfast was delicious and service was wonderful, The bed was soft but too saggy. It was difficult to turn because we were sinking in.
The robe was full of wholes, it needs to be binned.
😊
- Timothy (8/5): - Beautiful building and gardens

- Cheylon (7/5): Beautiful unique hotel with comfortable rooms. - Such a beautiful building, it really felt magical pulling up to it and furnishings inside were cozy and full of personality. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious. Room had blackout curtains which helped get a good night's sleep. Room & bed were slightly smaller and not as luxurious as I thought it would be from photos and price (but still comfortable!). A few mosquitos flying around that bit us during the night.
- Carolyn (9/5): Lovely choice for a relaxing weekend. Perfect location for couples to get away from the crowd - Charming, elegant and peaceful. Professional and friendly staff Bed was a bit too firm
- Mark (7/5): Old, charming, worn out, needs makeover - Great location. Building charm. Good breakfast Old and worn out furniture. Toilet broken, shower is over a bath and too small and pockey, overall bathroom not good. Bed too small.
- Sharon (10/5): -
- Stuart (8/5): Good stay, we'd come back. - Great staff. The hotel is old and timber and in some ways felt a little tired. However, it was very comfortable. Loved the pool and tennis court. Interesting place with its history. Minor niggle: the shower in the bathroom of room #3 is hard to temperature-control and keep the shower head in place when on full-power.
- Neil (10/5): Really enjoyed our stay here. - Lots of character. Peaceful, quiet location. Beautiful grounds. Professional and friendly staff. Nothing.
- Mary (8/5): Lovely historic stay! - Beautiful building, nice breakfast. The outside of the building could do with a repaint.
- Tracey (9/5): -
- Ellie (9/5): -

- Amber (9/5): Beautiful historic house, perfect for a romantic night away - Incredible historic property, lovely facilities and room and great staff Nothing
- Teresa Szozda (9/5): - We had a pleasant and relaxing stay at your hotel, with beautiful surroundings and fantastic, very helpful staff. We only had breakfast at your hotel, which was delicious. I enjoyed the view of the long driveway with the water fountain.
- Nicole (9/5): -
- Patricia (9/5): Very relaxing, will return soon. - We have stayed there many times before , the last time in 2000.
Being an old building with its history it does have a serene atmosphere. The surroundings are very peaceful and enjoyed the large terrace outside our bedroom.
Breakfast was excellent and the staff very friendly. The shower/ bath in our room was not easy to access, but I gather this is going to be remedied shortly. Very slippery underfoot.
The decor in the reception can only be described as tasteless and totally out of keeping. The interior designer must have done a bulk buy as it is the same in the Hydro Majestic.
The dining room is too military, needs a mixture of round and square tables, some coloured upholstery on the chairs. Do look at OKA. Co.uk at their velvet dining chairs. We looked at the proposed decor in one of the bedrooms which is a vast improvement, but again a different colour below the Dado rail with cushions to pick up colour would introduce a warmer feel.
I am sure if we return next year it will all look lovely !
- Thomas (9/5): - Historical building and location
- Rona Coreen (10/5): -
- MICHAEL GIANNAROS (10/5): - Everything about the place. Recommended to stay. Nothing.
- Viktoria (9/5): -
- Peter (10/5): -
- Bipana (10/5): -
- Crisanto (8/5): - The overall vibe of the place was nice. Staff were friendly it was easy to process everything. Restaurant closure on Sundays.
- Nancye (8/5): Nice place to stay would stay again - Great piece of history Room was rather noisy- lots of echos from upstairs
- Irina (4/5): Peculiar rooms should fulfill the purpose - Location is good, in quiet surroundings, clean premises and room. I booked deluxe queen room that suppose to have bath and French doors opening to a balcony to astonishing views.
I was looking forward to open those doors in the morning to breathe fresh morning sun while enjoying warm cup of tea.
I was dreaming to have a bath at the end of the day with a glass of red wine to finish my day with the last treat for the day, being on a holiday.
We DID NOT HAVE IT.
For unknown reasons we were put in a room designed for people with disabilities, where all the amenities, door knobs, ect specifically designed for a certain reason to accommodate people in need.
No vanity, just the sink where my knees almost touching it (we are tall people). No bath, no doors to the balcony, no balcony, just windows that I couldn't open.
Also, we were put in the room that is detached from the main hotel building (room #7). It felt like staying in B&B not a hotel.
There wasn't any privacy, as one side of the room with windows facing the courtyard where guests and staff are walking, so we had to keep curtains shut all the time.
- Melisa (7/5): Good - Staff was amazing Shower in the bath
- Jennifer (8/5): Beautiful historic property set amongst spectacular grounds. - Beautiful property and honouring the history. The room was very small.
- Brian (8/5): The resort is a little tired and r overpriced needs a makeover a makeover expensive and overpriced - Great gardens
- Beth (10/5): If you like an upmarket guest house, you’ll enjoy this accommodation and staff! - Lovely rooms, peaceful, and great staff. N/A
- Debra (9/5): - Such a quiet and peaceful location. Huge room with comfortable bed, helpful, friendly and informative staff.... Windows did not have screens.
- John (10/5): Brilliant. Will definitely stay again - The history of the building and location
- Tatiana (8/5): Wondeful stay, thank you! - Stunning ground and we havd a wonderful time. The only improvement can be made is in the interior, it is still ok but getting very dated and tied. Update of the interior, but I guess this is the question of funds available.
- V. Lal (10/5): A great location with beautiful setting and the wonderful staff enhance the stay. - Excellent variety and fresh produce . The outdoor area is really relaxing to enjoy breakfast . Nothing
- Amy (8/5): -
- Jo (8/5): Pleasant and historical - The historical side of things, Kangaroos, balcony, breakfast, close to Peppertree Value for money, no pool and tennis courts advertised
- Timothy (10/5): -
- Jodie (10/5): Awesome time away - It’s was amazing old charm close to everything staff weee beautiful and were always helpful I loved everything
- Blair (10/5): The best - Everything Nothing
- DEBORAH (9/5): Delightful short stay in the Hunter Valley. - Our stay was very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. The Hunter Valley Garden Christmas lights is worth visiting during November/December.
- Leigh (6/5): The staff, all new, were very attentive but they were having a hard job making some guests satisfied - Breakfast was good The building needs extensive renovation including air conditioning replacements
- David (9/5): Ideal weekend escape to the Hunter Valley - Generous sized room, comfy bed, quiet setting and yummy breakfast. Only thing I could fault was breakfast not starting until 8am as we're early risers.
- Vikki (9/5): - Relaxing atmosphere , quiet and peaceful , staff went above and beyond to make sure you felt special and to meet any needs you had. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Angela (6/5): -
- peter (9/5): - Location and ambience
- TAYLORI (8/5): - All was as it should be. nil

- CHE-HUNG (10/5): -
- Bri (1/5): -
- SCK (8/5): -
- Paul (5/5): Don’t go if a wedding is on - The look on the photo is stunning and great location to go wine tasting Avoid this place if a wedding reception on. Awful night. Management should either have weddings take the whole venue; not part wedding and part public. Ruined our experience.
- Duncan and Tanya (8/5): -
- JULIANNE (9/5): Peaceful and Elegant - Loved our visit to The Convent. It's a place we had hoped to visit for quite some time. We stayed in room 17, and had access to a lovely verandah from which to sit and watch the world go by. Peaceful and elegant ambience with delightful staff and relaxing atmosphere. They provided an extremely comfortable and clean room, served us a couple of complimentary drinks by the fireplace after we returned from our dinner out and we enjoyed a very tasty breakfast in their dining area the next morning. We loved exploring the property and discovering the interesting sculptures featured in different parts of the estate. Would certainly return in the future. 🥰 I have a dodgy knee, so the stairs were a bit tricky for me. I was aware they don't have a lift, so I was prepared to deal with this. The lovely receptionist offered to help with our bags but my poor husband, being the gentleman that he is, didn't want to "burden a lady with the load". He did most of the lifting and carrying for us.
- Cathy (10/5): Delightful weekend away in beautiful and lush accommodation with exceptional customer service. - THe welcome we received was lovely. Jess was exceptional in her customer service. It made the experience all the more special. The rooms were beautiful to look at AND comfortable and useful. The surroundings stunning, it made leaving the room to go out of a day difficult! We enjoyed quiet times in the room and the gardens and verandahs.
The breakfast was superb, perfectly cooked and quite decadent!
It was one of the best weekend away experiences we have ever had. Only 2 small things.
We found the shower taps quite difficult to get the temperature range right without them squealing.
But once we got the feel of them we were fine.
And the carpark was just a dirt patch, for such high end accommodation, a proper car park would have been preferrable, but really this is just being super picky.
The main thing we didn't like was leaving :)
- Tiff (3/5): Disappointing - The location is great. The outside and foyer is beautiful but that’s where it ends. The rooms need updating and maintenance. On our arrival we found multiple dead insects in the bathroom, on the bed side tables and in the bed. The beds were very uncomfortable and old, we also found bed bugs on our second night.
There were lots of insects (alive) in the bathroom including cockroaches.
The staff were not overly friendly or welcoming and seemed disinterested or not well trained in their roles.
Very over priced and run down for a supposedly 4 star hotel.
- SHAYNE (9/5): -
- Nicole (10/5): We love Halls Rd, Circa 1876, Carriages and of course, The Convent. - This is our Hunter Valley go to.
- ANDREW (7/5): relaxing, peaceful, quiet and plenty of friendly people. - peaceful surrounds and small facility - not overcrowded - no noisy guests. breakfast menu was very limited.
- Greg (9/5): -
- David (9/5): Great old building - lovely place to stay - Awesome location and the building has a beautiful story behind it and has a great feel. Staff were great. Beds were hard. Bathroom looking a little tired and outdated.
- Alexandra (9/5): -
- Shane (1/5): Not impressed with the staff friendliness , left because of lizard in the room and still charged us - Breakfast was good Lizard on the headboard of the bed and leaving faeces on the bed
- C Jowitt (9/5): A wonderful stay in a beautifully resorted part of Australia's history. - Beautifully restored historic accommodation set in gorgeous landscaped grounds. Staff were amazing and very helpful, providing a freshly made coffee in the morning before breakfast started. Very attentive and helpful with advice on where to go and also assisted with luggage. Restaurant on the property but was not open the night we stayed.
- Beverly (8/5): Comfortable and pleasant - Decor and breakfast were superb Bathrooms could do with a bit of an update
- Duncan (10/5): - We had an enjoyable stay. The staff were very helpful.
- Andris (8/5): - Beautiful old building in an excellent location. Needs a bit of TLC as shower in the bath is outdated and difficult
- Alan (8/5): Most enjoyable - Very pleasant surroundings Nothing
- Bondie (9/5): Satisfy! - The Victorian building, I think they have renovated, quite new and everything looks like a movie there haha Can not think of any yet.
