Guest Reviews
- yolandahV3445IF (2/5): View is great, not much ekse - Great views, large room, that is the only good stuff. Our booking did not appear in their system, no towels in our room, windows with broken glass.
The restaurant, well take a seat it’s a long story. Booked for 7, thought we would have a drink at the bar, $37 for 2 pints 😳 extortionate. Perused the very small menu and there was not a healthy option at all, garlic bread, schnitzel, Parmi, stew or pork. We thought the schnitzel was a safe option - wrong. It came to our table so over cooked it was nearly black, there was a 1/3 cup of salad consisting of 1/8 of a tomato, chopped cabbage, capsicum and onion with 2 drops of balsamic. The pepper gravy was inedible with a 3mm oil sludge on top and these were $32.50 each. We had to wait a substantial time for them to come out and noticed everyone else did too, looked like there was no chef but a cook, cooking one order at a time. Unfortunately we had little choice but to stay here as everything was booked out.

- White (8/5): - The staff and Chef were very friendly and made sure we were satisfied with everything. The food was exceptional quality! Best Barramundi and Scotch fillet!
- Bhandari (10/5): - Staff, ambience and location N/A
- Frauke (8/5): Was my second time there and I would return again if I came back to Port Arthur one day - Love the quaint house look and Tudor style of the building . The restaurant has a gorgeous cozy feel and the food was very nice . The location very close to the port Arthur historic site is ideal and we enjoyed going down to the water area. The internet was basically not working and the lounge was extremely hard to sit on .

- Kirsty (5/5): - Staff were friendly. Easy driving distance to surrounding sites. The view from our room was nice. We’re pretty sure our room wasn’t cleaned since the previous guests- the sheets had brown smudges throughout and dirt, we had to request new sheets when we checked in. The floor was also very dirty. Bad shower pressure and the water kept turning cold. Also no power sockets next to the bed. Water is not drinkable although staff provide water bottles
- Peter (6/5): Hotel in a good location to visit Port Arthur. - Nice location, old hotel but rooms were quite large and well equipped No breakfast option.
- Mark (10/5): Fantastic view and location. Very comfortable. - Great view All good
- Erin (4/5): We didn’t stay and booking.com is meant to refund us. We have now tried for six weeks to get Booking.com to help. Bookin - We did not stay, we spoke to the staff they said they would refund us and we have now been trying to get Booking.com to do this. It didn’t match the description, we did not stay.
- Mark (3/5): - Leaving and the staff in dinning/bar very helpful The room was nothing like the photos on website. Mold growing on windows, curtains. Furniture consisted of bed and table and chairs. No smoke detectors, emergency procedures, paint missing on wall, shower taps 2 feet off floor.
- Darren (10/5): Great position excellent restaurant and lovely staff - Location is perfect Nothing not to like
- Graham (9/5): - Excellent bed, friendly staff.
- Vasiliki (4/5): - Not much to like. Frontage beautiful and that's all Bed very uncomfortable, room had unpleasant smell. Food was disappointing wouldn't eat there again.
- Leigh (8/5): -
- Lars (7/5): -
- Burton (8/5): - Nice
- Critchley (9/5): Loved it - very relaxing after a day at Port Arthur - The room layout and furnishings were excellent. The view from the room was superb. Not many restaurants or eateries around. You are almost obliged to eat at the venue.
- Benjamin (7/5): - The old look was quite nice and the location was good.
- Michael (4/5): Very ordinary - Not much Turned up and was only provided a fair greeting. Restaurant was closed because chef was sick. Who only has one chef? Could not use the bar because they closed that down as well. Room was noisy as neighbouring room left early and you could hear their conversation, even the kettle boiling. Bed moved every time there was any motion. Overall very dissatisfied.
- Marion (9/5): Lovely room with a very pretty aspect -

- MARISA (9/5): Gorgeous hotel in the Port Arthur vicinity. Surrounded by water and forest with a fabulous historical aesthetic. Our roo - Gorgeous hotel in the Port Arthur vicinity. Surrounded by water and forest with a fabulous historical aesthetic. Our room was enormous and the bed was pretty comfortable. Lovely large windows looking outside into nature was something that we thoroughly enjoyed. Wish we could have stayed longer. We weren’t keen on the breakfast menu as we had a variety of dietary considerations, so went looking for an alternative place to eat. However, we found an absolutely fantastic place to eat about fifteen minutes away in Nubeena called Lucky Ducks Cafe.
- Jwalkn2020 (8/5): So glad we chose to stay at The Fox and Hounds Port Arthur - Reading all the reviews we didn't really want to stay at The Fox and Hounds in Port Arthur but there wasn't anywhere else open. Happy to say that these awful reviews are no longer true, new chef, new menu, new management team and clean rooms. The views are spectacular, the food was amazing and the staff were so friendly.
- thomasiV9763DI (4/5): Average rooms very poor meals - Rooms good, has very poor water quality but that is justified with bottle of water supplied in rooms for drinking as for meals both come out looked to be burnt where both dry and and half cold very poor meals for the hi end price was like waitress had an idea as after meals delivered to table they never come back close to us
- Kerry (7/5): Overall we enjoyed our stay but were disappointed with the restaurant/bar facilities - The location was great with fabulous estuary water view from our upstairs room!!! The view was worth the stay!
The staff appeared hard workers, were friendly and helpful. The restaurant and bar facilities were struggling! It appeared they did not have enough staff in both kitchen, bar and restaurant areas. There was no drink menu with prices and only 3 choices for wine. There was no flexibility with menu (ie swapping chips for mash potatoes).
- Nikki (8/5): - The view from our room was beautiful. The room was comfortable with everything we needed and the food in the restaurant was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location would be great if you had a car but as we were on foot it was a bit of a hike to get anywhere - still walking distance to the nearest food options and to the historic Port Arthur site, but quite a long walk!
- Jessica (5/5): Quaint place, good for an overnight. - Lovely location, fantastic view, by the lake! We had dinner at the restaurant and it was nice. The staff were friendly. A few bugs, so not fully clean.
The art work was quite racist and out of date. We took it off the wall as it felt like bad vibes. (it was a picture of early settlers, with the title “having a peaceful meeting the Indigenous people”. )
Beds were hard.
- Anastasiia (5/5): - The location is good. Nice window view. Terrible dinner with long waiting time, no breakfasts at all. Room is spacious but everything inside is pretty old.
- Brook (5/5): -
- Maddison (2/5): Not like the pictures. - The location was good The room was dirty and nothing like the pictures. The staff were not very helpful. Apparently we got a free upgrade, but one of the rooms was locked and the other rooms were dirty. We were also only told on arrival that the water was unsafe to drink. Apparently it was fine for showering, but it didnt look clean.
- Account (1/5): Terrible - Never go here. Everything. Do not come here.
- David (4/5): - The price and location were good The food was very disappointing, extremely dry and bland.
Accommodation was a little tired and out dated
- Heather (10/5): Lovely place to stay. - Lovely Tudor style pub and accommodation. Meals were lovely and room was neat and tidy overlooking a lake. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Nothing
- Lise (8/5): Nice historical feel. Very convenient location. - Very easy access, very close to the historical site. The pub has a very nice and warm English pub feel. The family rooms were tidy and clean. The pub is a little pricey and the second bedroom a little small for three, but definitely manageable for a night or two.
- Annette (8/5): A great place to stay & priced well - The view from our room was beautiful, room size spacious, extremely clean, beds were so very comfortable, great pillows, nice reception staff, great location. Can’t fault the accommodation. Took over an hour to get my meal in the restaurant & the food wasn’t great but the restaurant was well presented & staff lovely.

- Sharon (6/5): -
- Arunee (10/5): -
- Kerry (10/5): Wish I had the time to stay longer. Great food also. - Peaceful nice view
- Coley (1/5): We paid for two nights, left early the first day and didn’t come back - Looks nice in the pictures but really that’s as good as it got The restaurant was terrible, meals were pretty much packet meals, they couldn’t even toast store bought garlic bread properly, was cold in the middle. We were told on arriving to book quickly as they were going to be booked out quickly, giving impression it was popular, however only a handful of others were there, so please if you have to stay here go elsewhere for food
- Ann (6/5): Faulty Towers - Views were great over the lake and quiet. After a bit of a drive, it was a relief to stop and stretch and admire the building.. unfortunately, it wasn't open due to Australia day 😕
So,.. bathroom break... take pelmet off, re-hang bathroom door onto rollers and fit pelmet.
Now I can pee in private.
Go for a drive to find food and wine.
I recon the maintenance person needs a helper (or an army)
This place has so much potential
- Isha (6/5): -
- Liam (9/5): Perfect to get a nights sleep in a cool location at good value - Simple and comfortable Not much
- Ross (2/5): We could not wait to leave the next morning - Free bottled water It was dirty, beds where cheap and nasty. Pub decided not to open that day even though that was the reason we booked there. So had to eat from the local servo. Water was a horrid colour.
- Abbey (5/5): It was good but could’ve been better especially for the price - It was in a good location When we got into the room the floor wasn’t very clean and there were so many bugs and insects we had to spray everywhere and it made it feel very un clean
- Rob (8/5): Great accommodation option for a short stay - The room was clean and tidy, with a great view from the bedroom window and everything we needed for a short stay. Nothing. Everything was perfectly fine for what we needed.
- Dan (2/5): Disappointing - Classic historical build in a great location with a lot of potential. Dirty and not maintained, short cuts and poor workmanship. Cheap and nasty fit out in the rooms.
- Petrina (8/5): - The view out the windows was unexpected and absolutely beautiful
- Karen (8/5): Charming pub/resteraunt with amazing food and clean comfortable rooms. - We loved the historical character of the restaurant building. And the food was amazing! Wished the outside of the windows were cleaner to enjoy the beautiful view.
- Natalie (10/5): Excellent place to stay when going to Port Arthur Historic site. - I booked a room with view of the bay and it was worth it. Stunning view! Was quirky and quaint and a great location. The way other people parked at my door to my room. And the heavy footed people upstairs.
- vansy (8/5): -
- Corey (5/5): - Location and view Needs to be clean. Dust on lamps bases, skirting and cobwebs. I understand it's amongst the trees but the stairwells need to be cleared from leaves. Remove signage from room re coffee machines.
Beds need to be secured more as you sit on bed and it moves.
- Sherylee (10/5): -
- Louise (3/5): - Some very friendly staff tried their best in this dismal hotel.
- FranB_NZ (8/5): -
- Belinda (10/5): A charming stay... - The charm and character of the property and the clear respect the owner has for its heritage is second-to-none.
Very friendly staff and great food. The lake view was stunning to wake up to. Very well priced and great location for our visit to the Port Arthur historical sites. There was nothing I didn't like. It was clean and comfortable.
- Sheila (7/5): Acceptable - Quiet area except people upstairs People upstairs
- Tess (6/5): -
- Yong (9/5): -
- Jessica (5/5): - Location Room was unclean, toilet in particular even after staff re-cleaned.
- Kata (8/5): Very peaceful, good price for overnight stay. - The location was great to travel to Port Arthur Historic Site. The room was good and clean. Reasonable size bedroom in Room 1. Nice view from the bedroom window. Relaxing. The water is not drinkable , but the management/ staff offered bottled water/ refills. You can use the shower totally ok. It doesn't have the town water supply.
- Daniel (7/5): -
- Peter (10/5): Accommodation gem - The booking online was seamless, and we secured an excellent price by booking well in advance.
The property is situated in beautifully maintained surroundings, and our second-story room offered outstanding views of Stingaree Bay. We also enjoyed the rustic feel of the property and the convenience of the on-site restaurant.
Additionally, the location was perfect for the boat tour we attended and close to Port Arthur and other attractions. N/a
- Virginia (8/5): Beautiful place. - Lovely location Location
- Arild (4/5): -
- Scot (5/5): Very ordinary, look at others - Had a nice meal in pub Old run down rooms, rude manager who wouldn’t provide a I’ve bucket for the room
- Amelia (6/5): Comfortable - Location, Price No complaints
- Deborah (8/5): A comfortable and convenient stay with friendly staff, despite a few minor issues. - Clean room, nice view out of the window, pleasant staff, and a convenient location I didn’t like that the water was tannin-stained—the tap water looked brown, and bottled water was provided for drinking. I chose not to use the shower because of the water, which made me question the value of the room, even though the staff said it was safe to shower in, Installing a filtration system could help resolve this issue. It was also inconvenient not being able to park outside my room because other guests had taken the space.
- LORELLE (9/5): -
- Ben (7/5): Great place to stay. The young girl that was at reception and the bar was so helpful and friendly. - The view is gorgeous and amazing. Loved pub atmosphere. Washing up dishes in the bathroom sink with the toilet next to it.
- Donna (9/5): Great location for seeing the Port Arthur sites. Would stay again and recommend. - Great location and room had a lovely outlook onto the lake. Nil
- Tracey (2/5): -
- Adrian (5/5): Staff were great - It look quit nice from the outside. And at first glance we were happy. The restaurant was short staffed.
The water pressure was not the best. And the bed was old
- Steve (7/5): Had a good stay - Location is excellent Dated bathroom facilities
- Alana (9/5): -
- Paula (8/5): -
- Linda (7/5): - Close to Port Arthur, parking good, bed comfy, clean. Frypan was bowed and handle loose so heated unevenly and potential for handle to come off. Lounge was not that comfy. Needed more power points in kitchen.
- Lynn (5/5): Location ok. Rooms disappointing. - N/A The room had ants which were on the window ledges and crawled onto the bed. They were also in the kitchen area. The bed moved and there was lots of dust under the bed.
Our family had another room with a connecting door. They said they could hear the people talking and their TV clearly through the closed door. They had lots of flies in their room.
- Bronwyn (8/5): Hat a lovely couple of nights making port Arthur close. - Quaint accommodation close to port Arthur. Pub served very tasty food. A bit chilly
- Jason (5/5): HUNGERY - leaving well room was dirty bed was on wheels moved around the restaurant was closed the bar was closed just been renovated so had packet of chips for dinner ..had email to see if still going but no mention of restaurant/bar being closed very poor communication
- David (1/5): Probably the worse accomadation we have ever experienced. . - Absolutely nothing Property is advertised as accommodation with pub. Signs out the front. Pub is in shut down, so very misleading. Filthy overall. Bathroom had definitely not been cleaned. Pubic hair throughout, toilet paper with cockroach feces, used bikini wax under bathroom sink. Water contaminated brown , undrinkable. They did provide drinking water, but it was so brown it was not fit to shower in. Beds were made but had hair on pillows
and sheets. Aircon has a sensor so it can’t be left on for long so kept turning off. So couldn’t keep room warm. TV did not work properly. The oven and hot plates were on even though the stove was off. Husband removed fuses to make it safe. Kitchen cupboards with food droppings and filthy crockery. Overall the property is very run down, and in some sort of trouble, as we were told from Neighbouring accommodation. We arrived at the property late in the afternoon, so we had to stay, otherwise we would not have. No one on reception from afternoon to 1.30pm. Very disappointing
- Fiona (2/5): Location good but needs better management. - Location was good and close to the Port Arthur site. Owner was lackadaisical and preferred to talk to us from his office rather than the reception counter. Kitchen closed for renovations ( which we knew before booking) but thought the bar would be open for a quiet drink in front of the log fire. No bar open and no log fire.
Rooms very cold even with the heater turned up high. Floors had new vinyl floor covering which might be okay in summer but in Tasmania’s cold winters carpet is a must. Bedding was average and a “thin” blanket was found in the cupboard so I called into reception on our way out to dinner to get another blanket for extra warmth. Reception hours were advertised at 8am to 8pm daily but the door was closed at 6.30pm when I went to ask for an extra blanket. Would recommended electric blankets on the beds for those who like them in our winters.
- Barbara (5/5): - The historic house nearby bay are lovely The room wasn't particularly clean and the shower isn't great. Our room didn't have a table.
- Anne (5/5): Port Arthur is a stunning place to visit. - The room was fine. Great views. Clean, comfy bed We were informed on arrival that the bar and restaurant were closed for renovations. I think they should have informed us earlier. Considering we got a text message that morning regarding check-in times.
We still would have stayed but would have been better prepared.
- Rachael (7/5): -
- Maree (8/5): - Parking, water view, proximity to Port Arthur complex
- Renee (9/5): Best Parma in Tassie at their restaurant - Beautiful views from room
- Stewart (4/5): Very disappointing and felt duped by false advertising. - Location was ok. Cleanliness could have been so much better, dead flies, beetle trying to escape all the small flies. Could feel the springs in the mattress. Room was not what was advertised, definitely no garden view!
- PRAKASH (7/5): Smart tv helps good time with couples to watch favourites programmes. - Vintage look Limited choice of food n must have smart tv in every room.
- Carolyn (6/5): Pleasant and restaurant was lovely. Staff friendly. - Location was perfect for our overnight stay Property could have been cleaned better and one of the dining table chairs in our room was broken
- Sylvia (10/5): -
- Steve (8/5): - Beautiful historic property not far from the historic port Arthur site.
Old English pub vibes
Amazing food
- Ariane (5/5): Do not recommend. - Very close to Port Arthur Historical Site. It was very quiet at night despite lots of visitors. Our room was dirty. Visibly dirty. Dirty windows, window sills with dead insects, dirty floors etc.
The food at the restaurant was really awful. At $40 a meal we expected at least food that was cooked properly and decent cuts of meat. The cook needs sacking. It was awful.
