- Aaron (10/5): - Nice views and nice friendly vibe.
- Graeme (10/5): - Great spot
- Ahlene (6/5): It was the closest we could get to Birdlings Flat at late notice. - For a strange bed I slept well and I loved spending time in the garden the next morning. The interior is tired and in need of a freshen up and I can't of read the information properly as I was expecting our own bathroom and toilet.
- Luke (10/5): -
- Lauren (5/5): A once-beautiful period property that would benefit from some TLC. - Surprisingly lively bar with friendly staff. Washing machine facilities were provided if required. The property emailed me as soon as I had booked to check that I was aware that the bathroom facilities were shared. The broken cushions on the veranda, the stained chair and cobwebs in the dining room. Would have preferred that the window and veranda door closed without large air gaps rather than arrive to find the heater was on high.

- James (9/5): Experience the past in this quaint boutique hotel - What a fun location - it felt like staying in an old hotel in Europe. Yes, the washrooms and shower facilities are shared, but there are several so it was not an issue. The rooms are basic but clean and ours had a sink. Although we did not eat there, the tavern looked awesome. The grounds are beautifully kept and the bay is a short stroll down the hill. If you are looking for a cool and historic experience this is a must stay. The continental breakfast is worth skipping. We had to bring our own milk, bowls and cutlery. Nice eating room (needs a good cleaning) but the breakfast offerings show very little effort and it seems it is just advertised to help draw in business.

- Adrienne (4/5): Not good value for money - Location was lovely, staff very very accommodating and lovely Room, mattress needs to be replaced urgently. Breakfast very plain.

- Alan (8/5): We will always be grateful to the warm and friendly staff - The highlight of our stay at the hotel was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Our stay was at a difficult time when exceptional rain and storms caused the cancellation of our ferry and then flight to the North Island. The staff made us feel very welcome, and Emily put a lot of time and effort into helping us get back to Christchurch after our stay. we needed to return to Christchurch, but had we not been able to they made it very clear to us that somehow they would accommodate us for longer. we really appreciated that.
The food was good and served by very friendly staff.
- Anita (8/5): Nice, relaxing short stay. - Nice couple of night's stay at Governor's Bay! Friendly staff, tidy room with comfortable bed and large shared verandah with great views over the bay. Decent meal in the bar. The continental breakfast included was truly laughable! The breakfast dining and buffet area could seriously use a thorough clean!
- Hardman (10/5): Great location in a clean and comfortable room with friendly staff - Good location. Clean and comfortable
- SINGH (10/5): -
- STEPHANIE (5/5): - Hotel un peu vieillot mais propre
Le petit déjeuner est minable
Aucun service, on doit tout faire nous même et au vu du prix je suis très déçue Petit déjeuner minable
- Martin (6/5): -
- Eike (9/5): - Very nice room and good food downstairs (recommendation: fish and chips).
- Rae (6/5): - The view & balcony.
Using the pool.
Kererū flying around. Being worried about setting the alarm off when wanting to make a cup of tea in the dining room later in the evening.
Being told we could use the pool in the evening but then finding it locked.
- Ken (8/5): A wonderful relaxing stay and great that it is dog friendly - The location is beautiful and just a short distance to the harbour and walking tracks.
Great that they are pet friendly and clearly dog lovers
The upstairs balcony is wonderful for and evening drink / dinner.
The pool is also a great addition. It is a little tired looking but that just adds to the rustic charm
- John (9/5): Traditional pub hotel - Wonderful traditional period hote withl a great welcome in a nice part of the world A. Ensuite room would be nice
- Emma (8/5): Beautiful location and building. Stunning views from the large balcony. Friendly staff and a fantastic heated pool! - Beautiful location and building. Stunning views from the large balcony. Friendly staff and a fantastic heated pool!

- Craig (8/5): -
- David (7/5): Charming beautiful location but skip the included breakfast - Amazing views, beautiful location I’d recommend forgetting the breakfast included, an unpleasant part to an otherwise charming stay. That part unfortunately was quite dirty, very basic, nothing much left and had mouldy fruit.
- Rory (9/5): Great dog friendly stay - Balcony room with a view was excellent and dog friendly with very few restrictions. Everything was great
- Danielle (6/5): - Great staff, vibe and food. Pool was also a bonus There were only shared bathrooms, this was not stated when booked and only made aware once a message was sent after booking from the hotel.
- SIMON (7/5): -
- Benedict (7/5): It served its purpose of meeting up with friends - Relaxed style. Pub like. Outdoor space Nice balcony. Rooms were small. Could do with a revamp (paint etc ) Windows dirty. Simple breakfast.

- Phillip (10/5): - Wonderful staff. Jeremy the owner upgraded our room on request ... and free of charge. Also they helped us with local knowledge about local attractions.
Lovely big fresh airy room with large communal verandah. Very relaxed atmosphere to whole place. Great food with generous portions. Shower suddenly ran out of hot water - possibly because hotel washing machine was in use.

- Ashma (4/5): We had good time - The location and the vibe was good It was too expensive and didn’t knew we had to share toilet bathroom.
- Wiljan (8/5): Nostalgie - Locatie en personeel
- Lori (7/5): -
- Ben (7/5): Super great staff and interesting location outside the main city. - Great location and welcoming staff. Conveniently above a great restaurant with a great patio and view. Bed had seen better days, and the shared facilities would have been inconvenient if there were more guests.

- Brian (10/5): -
- Bonny (10/5): - The beachy/sea side vibe of it. Staff were super friendly and welcoming and really yummy food N/A
- Javier (3/5): Bad experience - Almost nothing, just the view to the lake from the room The hotel is very old and has shared bathrooms, old beds, and dirt everywhere. The breakfast is very poor, with just a few items on the table and dirty mugs and cutlery.
The hotel is in need of renovation. I selected a room with a private bathroom on the Booking website, but they do not actually have any. All rooms share a bathroom.
- Clint Brough (10/5): - Views and food were amazing friendly staff great place to spend the evening 😀
- Eugenie Marie (9/5): Loved the homely atmosphere and historical charm. The restaurant dinner meal was beautiful. - Thoroughly enjoyed, especially the peach halves. The dining room had a lovely outlook. Everything supplied was very filling. Cant think of anything
- Benjamin (10/5): - Great stay and friendly staff
- Moana (5/5): Was great but the bed wasn’t comfortable and the rooms lacked colour/decor. Breakfast in the morning was untidy and - The location Uncomfortable bed and breakfast was worse than my own kitchen at home
- Ramsay (9/5): lovely , highly recommended - We had a lovely stay at the hotel . Really enjoyed it . Lovely view from the window over the bay
We had to leave before we were able to enjoy the breakfast . Barista coffee availability before 10 am
- Sally and Gordon (10/5): - Beautiful views and lovely decks and garden areas to relax in.
- Cassandra (10/5): Loved staying here! Beautiful historic hotel, great view, excellent food and owners were fantastic. - A beautiful cosy hotel! Lots of character.
- Francine (8/5): Quiet retreat near Christchurch - Top location near the wharf, lovey pub / restaurant below. Room with balcony had a great view. Continental Breakfast was good. Very comfie bed. Could hear some noise below but once the restaurant closed it was very peaceful.
- Kelly (9/5): Superb - Excellent food and service. Great staff and atmosphere. Nothing comes to mind.
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Marie (7/5): Very comfortable room and bed and we enjoyed direct access to the balcony - Comfortable room with nice view.
- Nicola (8/5): - Real kiwi proper pub hotel. Excellent reception and service from owner who couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. Other staff great too.
Pizza was yummy.
- Stephen (6/5): Love to perhaps come back one day in the daylight to enjoy the property at its best. - Warm welcome from Staff. First impression was one of cool place and vibe. Room was adequate with awesome balcony. The Room had no tea/coffee facilities and the bathroom was far enough away. The fact there is no toilet is a bit of a drag.
- Adrian (10/5): I will be back - What a beautiful spot! The view is absolutely stunning, and the food is fantastic. The staff here are incredibly friendly and go above and beyond – they even went the extra mile (literally) to return the sunglasses that I left behind! can't think of anything
- Patricia (8/5): Very good - Location and views. The dinner I purchased at the downstairs bar was great. could have used a chair in the room
- Michael (8/5): - Very nice location
- Rose (7/5): Good -
- Peter (8/5): Very good -
- Phil (8/5): Very good -
- Francis (10/5): - Very easy check in. Our room looked a little tired but very spacious and clean. Comfy bed. Don’t be put off by not having en-suite facilities, we had no problem using the bathrooms when we needed them. Ate on site, delicious meals. All staff very helpful and friendly.
- Derek (10/5): - Nice place, friendly staff
- Darren (8/5): - Comfortable and friendly
- Donna (8/5): Excellent - Amazing views, friendly helpful staff, loved the Pizza chicken and cranberry
- Ortiz (8/5): Very good - Amazing views
Lovely staff - Special mention to the lady at the bar that was the best hotel staff I've seen in a while :)
Good value for money
- Dennis (5/5): Great location, but a tired old building that the management/owner are investing very little effort into making it a - The location. Small room and super uncomfortable bed (Metal springs with no cushioning.). The breakfast was very weak.
- Michael (8/5): Recommend it - Charming ,staff and food good ! Nothing
- Kyle (10/5): Always a great place to stay. - As always great place to stay and very Poodle friendly.
- Miriam (8/5): - An iconic hotel , with a special history. Lovely setting. Staff very friendly and helpful. Sourdough for breakfast was yummy. Hotel, overall however, a ‘bit tired’. Shared facilities so, in my opinion room was over priced on booking. com.
- Marylyn (7/5): It was convenient for the reason we stayed there. - Breakfast was average but adequate The room was clean and we'll presented BUT needed to be better ventilated prior to arrival as had a very stale smell of smelly bodies
- Graham (10/5): Exceptional -
- 100aa (7/5): Good - The style of the accommodation, the buildibfa architecture, the ambience and the old-world charm, with a beautiful covered shared veranda overlooking the bay and the harbour in the distance. Period doors from the room to access veranda. Nice welcome and tour of the place. Thank you for the room upgrade. Excellent and tadty sourdough style bread for breakfast (but rest more badic). Lucky, as other guests staying around were quiet. Hotel was not full. The hotel sign design is lovely.
Easy to walk the side streets in the village with cute finds along the way and an impressive newly renovated jetty accessible to all I would be hesitant to bike the narrow main road around the harbour but there is a biking and a combined walking trail going through Governors Bay, skirts around the smaller bays closer to the actual shoreline. A relaxing stay in an off beat location. Due to it's location the cars that drive too fast descending the winding narrow road to Governors Bay can be hear from a great distance. Thank goodness the hoons stopped driving shortly after midnight. Be careful of speeding vehicles through the village.
The storing of cleaning supplies and piled linen to be laundered in one of the bathrooms.Although the facilities were clean thus gave a messy impression.
The room got very stuffy overnight but not able to leave doors to veranda open overnight, as other rooms with guests had also access.
Some more care for the begonias growing in the pots on the verandah would be welcomed and such small steps would boost the image of this lovely looking and friendly pub.
- Rani (9/5): Superb - I had a lovely stay at Otomiro! Everything was great, comfortable and easy!
The staff was just amazing and so accommodating!
Stunning location and great walking trails nearby.
- Leigh (7/5): Good for the money. - The hotel looked over the bay and was excellent in being close to Lyttelton and the Banks Peninsula.
The room was very quiet, sunny and welcoming having been refurbished to contemporary standards. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was almost new, fresh and clean.
Parking was easy. I would definitely book again in the future. The breakfast room was in need of a complete refurbishment and the Continental Breakfast was very very basic.
I would have preferred private facilities but this minor inconvenience is compensated by the reasonable price.
- Katia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annie (8/5): Great weekend getaway - Lovely views & staff were exceptional.
The sourdough bread for breakfast. The boy racers roaring past the hotel in the early hours of the morning.
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Stuart (10/5): - The hotel is older but well kept. Rooms are comfortable, and have a very long shared walk out balcony, with a magnificent view of the ocean.
There’s a main floor restaurant which serves a variety of dishes and a variety of drinks from the bar.
There’s a patio just outside the restaurant which provides a view of the ocean.
There’s a decent help yourself continental breakfast.
The area is lush with jungle like plants and trees and other restaurants nearby.
The dollar value was very good for the area and the accommodations.
The drive was under half an hour from the city and was enjoyable along the winding paved road.
- Amelia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sa (10/5): Was excellent and suitable for our needs. I would recommend to anyone. - The rooms were a perfect size for 1-2 people! They were a suitable size.
Lighting was great. Next to the windows. Aswell as the balcony view!
The bar was awesome! Plenty of options. Dinner was great! Also a very special mention to the afternoon manager Rozie? Roz! Her hospitality was absolutely immaculate! She was very polite. Calm. Professional. Seen us through any problems or questions we had! She is definitely a great asset to your team. Walking down those concrete stairs to the car park absolutely drunk and too many beers deep was very much a struggle!!! Hahhaa. But other than that! Nothing at all.
- Sa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yves (8/5): Very good -
- M&j (8/5): Very good -
- Heather (8/5): Staff really helpful and stay was great - My grandchildren loved the breakfast The bed I had wasn’t comfortable but the other 2 were fine
- Jane (10/5): Fabulous stay. Great Staff will be back - Breakfast was great and rooms were clean and tidy
- Craig (3/5): Poor - Location. I was disappointed with my stay at this hotel. First of all, the shared bathroom and toilet facilities were far from ideal. The showers were old, poorly maintained, and very basic—not what you expect for the price.
The food was another letdown. The "free breakfast" was nothing more than cereal and toast served in a bland and uninspiring dining hall. For the rates they charge, I expected much better quality and variety.
Overall, the experience felt very budget-oriented but without the corresponding low price. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless absolutely necessary.
