Guest Reviews
- Georgina (10/5): Gina - Everything Nothing
- Robinson (7/5): Comfortable and so close to everything. - The bed was totally great. Unit was homely. Everything was adequate and warm and clean. Units are not new but in good order. So close to where we were meeting up with family made our stay easy. Could not be better but has a steep drive in. Not a problem but we had to be careful on narrow drive. We were glad we had a small car.
- Philip (10/5): -
- Candice (10/5): Comfortable and well made stay away from home and easy with the PIN code for the door àlso brilliant - The layout and kitchen facilities they had a dryer which was great for our laundry and t he y allowed our pet dog small puppy to join us on our trip away also which was important I can’t fault this apartment was great for my kids and puppy and I
- Hearn (7/5): - Place was clean and tidy when we arrived. Had everything we needed. Hosts were Informative. Had a good stay couldn't fault you on anything.
- Alan (8/5): Enjoyable stay, great location - Location was very close to Browns Bay beach and shops bars cafes and restaurants All good

- Vanessa (9/5): - Location was perfect for accessing Browns Bay beach which wasn’t far away.
- Felicia (10/5): - Very friendly communication and great location. Close to town. Happy to do another holiday there.
- Stephen (5/5): - Locality to Browns Bay shops, beach, and amenities.
Staff friendly and helpful. Limited parking, driveway very dark on a night and in need of repair. Construction work on new buildings at rear of property quite noisy and they start very early.
Very low shower.
- Robin (8/5): We were pleased with the accommodation -
- Nita (10/5): Love the unit , very clean and cosy - It was beautiful the unit reminded me of a cottage No common
- james (9/5): - what a neat place new owners who i am sure are going to improve it as last owners had let it run down a bit close to beach and parks perfect for the family and pet
- Janaka (5/5): -
- Natasha (7/5): Easy and practical - I liked all the facilities, it was like having a small home to stay in. Perfectly comfy. I think a modern large mirror on the dining table wall would make a big difference. Remove one single bed in lounge and replace with a sofa bed. Remove the old gardens outside for extra car parking and ease to move around in a vehicle. Lights on the main sign outside is a must!
- Bronwyn (9/5): - Great location. Comfortable Clean
- Nicholas (8/5): Great location good value motel - Plenty of linen changed daily, laundry available late. No one in the office, difficult to communicate with an Australian phone to coordinate payment.
- Yvette (10/5): - The staff are extremely helpful & friendly.
Very clean motel, in a great location. The two bedroom unit is very spacious and cosy.
Amazing value for money. We couldn't find a cheese grater or potato peeler in the kitchen.
- Williams (6/5): Enjoyed our stay once we found location. Would stay again perfect location for our needs - Good facilities in apartment eg full oven, fridge a bit old , beds comfy. Towels changed every day. Good heat pump.Sofa bed very uncomfortable to sit on as only seating in lounge. General place needed a spruce up eg paint all over. Toliet walls very rough looking. On arrival problem with getting the right code for door. Also very difficult to find . Signage outside needs renewing. Needs to light up.
- Dena (6/5): Pleasant -
- Kaur (7/5): Overall was pretty good. The staff girl was really nice and very kind. - Very quite and close to my work The heat pump wasn’t working and either the stove is not working too
- Thomas (8/5): Very good -
- Barrott (8/5): Very good - Location and cleanliness Nothing
- Gina (9/5): All that we needed - I am always looking for the right place to suit both ourselves and our fur baby.. Everything we needed was sufficient..and we were comfortable. We liked the area the comfort and that it suited our fur baby..Just needs a little updating.. little bit of wear and tear..Has great potential would look great with a lick of paint and maybe more flower gardens to brighten the landscape
- Erin (9/5): Superb - Nice size apartment. Nothing
- Williams (9/5): Superb -
- Bronwyn (9/5): Very comfortable - Great location
- Vicki (7/5): Good - nice and clean only channel 1 worked on TV
- Rebekah (8/5): Very good - I like the space in the 2bedroom apartment and all the kitchenware etc for cooking I thought the bedding covers were very out dated and the fold out sofa was very hard
- Colina (6/5): Pleasant - Large space Dated and smells old
- Stephen (5/5): Passable - Location good, 10 minutes walk from beach and shops. Access not clearly visible to steep driveway.
Shower height great for very small people not good if you are tall, nearly have to kneel down to get under it. Doors need better locks at the rear although front door access is good.
Adequate apartment to sleep in.
TV channels very limited.
- Alessandro (7/5): Good stay for a couple of nights... - Good place to spend a couple of nights, we never had direct contact in person with the host, but the exchange via messages was prompt, precise and friendly. We missed a door in our sleeping room, not only as acoustic isolation, but also from the light from the kitchen in the morning. The wifi was quite slow, but that is a minor thing.
- Emerson (10/5): Perfect - I liked everything: the landscape, the cozy house, the staff, the location because it is very close to the beach.🥰
- Desmond (7/5): Good -
- Lizel (7/5): Good -
- Bronwyn (7/5): It served its purpose for myself and my dog - Good location. Comfortable Clean Steep drive Only saw one member of staff once for 10 seconds Never saw manager Joy , only spoke to her on the phone.
- Barrott (9/5): Great location - Great location beds were comfortable as was the unit and the bonus of being able to take the dogs Shower pressure was a bit erratic
- Victoria (10/5): Exceptional - Everything.
- Rachel (1/5): Very disappointing. - An easy walk to Browns Bay No door on the bedroom. So light coming in the room, smoking verandahs outside....smoke wants through the rooms.
Tight parking.
- Kellie (1/5): Avoid this property at all costs - Black mold throughout, property doesn’t have eftpos facilities, only accepts cash. Didn’t end up staying checked out straight away.
- John (9/5): very good - Great price and location smelt of dog
- Arthur (6/5): Pleasant -
- Cowboy (5/5): Passable - Excellent service from owners did go above and beyond to make the stay as pleasant as possible Photos are too old . The place is outdated and not what photos look like. Bought this up with the owner to help get people visiting. Place is a little run down . Needs freshening up inside and a general tidy up in the gardens and around .
- Kay (7/5): Good - Close to everything. The driveway is steep
- Diane (10/5): Exceptional - The location was fantastic for us visiting family. This is an older motel but it is well kept and clean.
- Jax&jorge (10/5): A Wee Gem! - Location - 10 minutes to everywhere we needed to go.
Value - excellent price for a very adequate facility.
Clean - although dated decor, as clean as it could be.
Unit - with a separate bedroom, bathroom, toilet, kitchen, lounge, and dining area. Very well set out. Basic kitchen utensils, plates, etc all provided.
Art - some really interesting original art on display.
TV - good size and location.
Shower - while not the best pressure, temperature remained consistent throughout my shower.
Peace - we had the rear-most unit and hardly heard any road noise. There are some lovely plants in the garden, and it would look fantastic with a weed and tidy up.
Some of the window catch locks need repairs. Although I didn't feel this affected security as the windows could be closed, some of the locking mechanisms were missing.
No face cloths or hand towels were provided. Just bath towels, bathmat, and a teatowel and dishcloth in the kitchen.
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Lily (1/5): Bad - The property is more run down than I expected, the room was very dark and smelt.
There was no lock on the toilet door.
The beds were very hard.
We did not end up staying at the property, after we had been there approximately 10 mins the toilet broke and flooded the bathroom.
This property is not worth the money paid to stay there and is in need of repair and upgrading.
- Henry (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (8/5): Great value in a great location. Would definitely stay again! - Great value for money in a great location. A new duvet on the beds would mean less of an overall dated look.
- Kahurangi (5/5): Good location. - Easy access to the room. Good comms Needs some attention and tlc. Tidy up front area with a blower... leaves and grass. Update duvets, light shades, dining chairs. A lick of paint on peeling wood frames and worn areas would do wonders. A waterblast on driveway and terraces would provide a more welcoming feel.
- Goody (8/5): Apart from hard bed found our stay enjoyable and would come again good value for money - I liked the quiet area. Being in room 1 was ideal for us rather than being closer to the front. It had what we needed in the room. Lounge chair really comfortable Found the beds too firm for my liking. However partner works for bed company and explained it’s normal for longer wear and tear. If we stayed again we’d bring a topper.
- Nicole (7/5): Good - Easy check-in, quiet area but good location close to shops. Lots of space in the room as well. Very basic and outdated, but we didn't expect anything fancy for the price.
- Carina (7/5): Good -
- Carina (8/5): Very good -
- Carina (8/5): Very good -
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable and quiet stay. While the property is older, it's well-maintained and clean. The staff are lovely, and the location is convenient, within walking distance to the beach. The entrance qas hard to see at night
- Flavell (9/5): Affordable and well kept premises perfect for what we were there for. - Easy access tidy and perfect for what we needed as a family Wifi slow and didn’t wrk properly. T.v needs upgrading with the times.
- Mandy (6/5): Pleasant - They allow animals other than dogs Our initial room had an odor that after a short time burnt in your throat and nose, when we advised them of this they changed us to another apartment, and this one was comfortable for our stay.
- Gopinath (6/5): Needs some improvement. - Beds, towels, kitchen utensils are fine. Spiders and cob web were there in the ceiling. Wasn't aware that there are red ants.
There is no sponge scrub to clean the dishes. It was a bit difficult to clean the utensils with brush.
No bins for recycle waste.
- Ma (5/5): Passable -
- Tia (4/5): Disappointing -
- Denson (4/5): Disappointing -
- Jaz (7/5): Good - Joy was very helpful and accommodating for my family stay. This place is so close to amenities d the beach. The rooms look a little outdated.
- Graeme (8/5): Very good -
- Oxana (9/5): Superb -
- Suppiah (5/5): Passable -
- Mamta (10/5): Excellent value for money - Excellent location
The unit had every basic thing we could ask for.
Clean linen, comfortable bed.
The fact that we could take our little dog with us.
Excellent value for money.
Excellent communication from Joy throughout our stay. Space to turn the vehicle.
- Kathryn (8/5): Definitely felt it was value for money but it also felt like we took a step back into the 90s. - Unit had everything needed and was nice to have 2 bedrooms for such a reasonable price. Furniture, bedspreads, carpets and kitchen were all extremely dated. Oven door didn’t close properly, one of the plugs in the kitchen didn’t work. Some cracked and peeling paint.
- Diana (10/5): - Wonderful services and very clean. Thank you so much
- Kevin (6/5): Has character. - Motel was comfortable and clean but very old.
- LisaS9645 (10/5): Late night, last minute booking! - We had driven to Auckland on the fly and thought we'd find somewhere close to where we needed to be the next day. A google search of North Shore availabilty was very limited with other options not having a 24 hour check in, or office hours closing at 8.30. Things were looking a bit dire as it was after 11pm.
We found the Olive Tree online, it had a room available and 24 hour check in.
Our host was extremely polite and accomodating, thank you!
Our room was spacious and impeccably clean, the bed, super comfy. The price seemed reasonable for Auckland, and the room provided every comfort.
The motel itself is not new, but our room was in very neat and tidy condition. I would happily stay here again.
- sami666 (8/5): nice, quiet and spacious! - very nice studio apartment in a quiet part of Brown's Bay. the apartment actually consists of two rooms - living area and a bedroom with two beds (queen + single). there is also a huge shared backyard with trampoline to the kids. very friendly personnel too.
- Ralph (2/5): WARNING: Bed Bugs! - WARNING: BED BUGS. My wife and I stayed one night (December 27, 2017) at this hotel (room #3), and while we had to leave quickly to catch a flight the next morning, I began to find red welts on my stomach. In less than a day, I discovered many red welts with tiny bite marks. It is now January 2, and half my stomach, side and back are riddled with swollen, red bites, many of which have blistered, popped and scabbed. The itching is unbelievable, and there is some pain involved. I’m a wreck. This hotel has bed bugs, at least in room #3.
I contacted the hotel three days ago to tell them what I was going through, as well as my belief that they have bed bugs so they could take immediate action. In response, I have received only a confirmation that they have received my email. Nothing more. As far as I know, they have done nothing about it, nor have they alerted the pubic. People are likely continuing to stay in that very room. This is unconscionable.
The room was well-appointed and cared for, other than that.
Be aware!
- Carmen (10/5): Home away from home - This was an incredibly pleasant stay, only exception was the constant presence of ants that went after the water and any sweets on the counter. I would still return knowing this, as the apartment is surprisingly comfortable, cozy and peaceful. The nearby town offers a couple of grocery stores, I signed up for yoga classes the week I was there, the nearby beaches are beautiful. It’s about an hour drive from Auckland, but well worth it; as I do not like big cities. This motel is worth being your home base while exploring Auckland and the surrounding areas.
- Elizabeth & Wal (10/5): Very handy to Browns Bay shops and the beach - Enjoyed the stay and the special touches like chocolates, toothbrushes, razors, slippers etc
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastic location for our visit, lovely and quiet, cleanliness was impeccable and the staff were most obliging. I would definitely recommend this motel and would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel manager was incredibly helpful, accommodating and very pleasant to interact with. The room was tidy and comfortable.
- MandyJKim (6/5): Comfortable but very dated - We stayed 2 nights during some cold and rainy weather. The room was cold and we needed the heater on continuously. However it was nice and clean, reasonable value for money in Auckland. It was difficult to have a dark room at night as there were no blinds or curtains for many of the windows!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Close to vibrant shopping &a restaurant area and lovely beach
- 644sonalib (10/5): Loved Staying There - I think the stay was excellent because every morning cleaner would come to our room 3 to change towels and also I think this motel should keep pet chickens so we can feed scraps to chickens living on that property!
- jaredKaeo (8/5): Our go-to Motel in Auckland - This Motel is clean, family friendly and close to Browns Bay shops, beach & grocery stores. We always stay in a suite which includes a full kitchen, dining table & chairs. Each room has its own free parking. Very basic room but perfect for us. Staff are always very helpful. We've never had a bad experience here!
- DNAC022 (10/5): Deceptively good - Highly recommend, loads of 70's character. A bit sceptical when we arrived, although by the time we left all agreed we would happily stay here again.
The unit was clean, well equipped and the hosts friendly and helpful.
- 540philipi (6/5): Basic Apartment - We stayed here one night before collecting our rental motorhome. The accomodation was clean and tidy and provided the basic necessities we needed.Tea bags and coffee provided. It is a little old fashioned with its furnishings. Staff were very helpful. Close to local amenities.
- Adie (6/5): The motel was a stopover not a destination - The motel was an ideal place to stop for a night. It was very clean and although slightly old fashioned it was spotlessly clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
- 720natasham (8/5): Very quiet, unlimited WI-FI, free international and local landline calls. - We stayed at this motel for 3 nights after having a muck up at the original motel we had booked. We would not normally have stayed at a motel at this star level, but we all slept soundly in this very quiet one bedroom motel, and would definitely consider staying here again.
There was a queen bed and single bed in the bedroom, and 2 singles that converted to couches in the lounge.
Pluses: very quiet, free unlimited WI-FI, free local and international landline calling, 7 min walk to Browns Bay beach, shops and restaurants, clean, hot consistent shower.
Negatives: Queen bed had seen better days and was more like sleeping on a water bed.
- 890geraldiner (8/5): Apartment stay - We phoned to say we would be a little late arriving and were given a code to access our apartment keys, great service. We had a 1 bedroom apartment which was very cute, just like a little house 😃 it was well stocked and plenty of towels. Would definitely recommend staying here. Not far from the village and plenty of eating places to choose from.
- qu (8/5): - 房间宽敞,但Wi-Fi只能一个人上
- paul_44_mk (8/5): Simple and clean apartment - We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which was very simply decorated but very spacious. The bed was really comfortable and the shower was great. The apartment was clean when we arrived and although the reception wasn't manned, it was really easy to contact the owner using the reception phone and get our room keys. The Olive Tree is set back from a residential street and is very quiet. It was good value for the price paid.
- Biljan (4/5): One visit will be enough - We booked a night because we were having a night out nearby and didn't want to drive. I had received a text earlier giving me a code for the safety box so we could get the key ourselves. The front office at the time of our arrival at 5pm was closed so we saw no-one until I rang them at 8.15am the next morning to check out. While the unit seemed relatively clean (although the window frame in the toilet was quite mouldy and the bottom of the back door was either very dirty or partly rotten) it still had its 1980s decor. It perhaps had newish carpet and possibly a lick of paint but it's very tired and terribly dated. The condition of the furniture is very, very average and is in keeping with its age. Unfortunately it's probably the only motel in the locality but the Olive Tree would be dead if any sort of half decent competition came along. The front office is also dated and had leaves lying around on the floor, a bag of linen on one side and behind the other door there seemed to be a big pile of sheets. We will make alternative arrangements next time if we need to spend a night in Browns Bay. Perhaps it's one advantage is that it would be a 10-15 minute walk to the beach.
- Kiwi Road Warrior (4/5): Location Required - Had to do some work in the area so was quick access for that. However extremely low standard of fit out, old, messy unkempt property. Wouldn't stay there again, unless absolutely have to. Its a shame, because its only 5 minutes walk to a most scenic and beautiful beach with some lovely eateries in the vicinity.
- Verified traveler (8/5): nice and clean.....just a few things need updating - nice and clean...lovely host... just a few things we felt need updating...and to make it warmer...
was easy to find and get back to motorway....
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Drunk people and noisy till early on Sunday morning.
- Elainetucker (10/5): Most comfortable beds - we arrived at this motel at about 8.00 at night. We were welcomed and shown to our room. The room or should I say suite had kitchen dining area, bathroom and lounge. We were pleasantly surprised at the spacious area in the unit. The bed we slept in was the most comfortable I have experienced in a motel, I would recommend this hotel.
- tracey (8/5): Comfortable hotel close to Browns Bay - comfortae motel, functional kitchenette, quiet location. Great shower.
- BoGBS (8/5): Good basic self-catering accommodation - Kuni, the owner, and his staff are extremely helpful and run a good establishment.
The Olive Tree is close (walking distance) to public transport, supermarkets, great restaurants and Browns Bay Beach.
We stayed here during our first few days in NZ and then returned after touring around the North and South Islands, before returning home.
The units' kitchens have enough to make basic self-catering meals and basic Sky TV channels.
A good base from where to explore Auckland, especially the northern areas of Auckland.
