• RobFoy (10/5): Delivery meets expectation - in a good way. - The Avenue Motor Lodge is exactly what you’d expect at a modern motel. A cheerful welcome at reception and offer of some fresh milk. The room we had was clean and tidy, well presented, good size room with kitchen area and a separate bathroom - ours had a spa bath. It looked as though the room had been refurbished recently. The kitchen had a microwave and 2 ring hob plus enough equipment to cook a small meal. The room had a small balcony though no view. The only “complaints” are the lack of storage (just one drawer for two people) and a small fixed shower head over the bath that didn’t match the lovely water pressure and hot water that was available. Bearing in mind that these are two very minor inconveniences in an otherwise very good room, I would nonetheless be happy to stay here again.

Plenty of plugs to charge things up for travel, good washing machine and dryer available. Booked an extra night here to get ready for our big off road trip and was perfect. Staff are local and very friendly. We found it was very fairly prices as well. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend.
• wakeupjames (10/5): Simply excellent - Simply one of the best motels I've stayed in. Very comfortable, well equipped, good wifi and generally in very good condition. I would definitely stay here again. The single downside is that the property comprises two floor so as I'm not great on stairs a room on the upper floor can produce a slight challenge. Fortunately the owner immediately volunteered to carry my bag up the stairs and another guest helped me when I was leaving - restores one's faith in human nature!

The bed in the deluxe spa bath unit was super comfortable. The water is heated with gas so there was plenty of hot water for the spa bath. The unit was nice and warm with an adjustable wall heater. The TV had all the channels we enjoyed at home, including Sky Sport. The furnishings were modern and the unit was very clean. The kitchen was well fitted out for cooking. We checked the information for the motel and left before 10.00am. Thanks for a great stay.

• tarquint2025 (2/5): Avoid at all costs, we left feeling unsafe and unwelcome - I booked a Deluxe Studio Spa, expecting the spacious courtyard shown on the website. However, I was disappointed to find that the large courtyard is only available for the corner unit. The unit we were given had a very narrow patio—about 1 meter wide—with two chairs and a small table. The patio lacked sunlight as it was surrounded by high bushes and neighboring buildings. The photos and descriptions on the website were misleading. The next morning at 10:30 AM, there was loud, aggressive banging on our door. When I opened it, the motel manager demanded to know how much longer we planned to stay. Unaware that checkout was at 10 AM (the previous hotel we stayed at in Queenstown had an 11 AM checkout), I explained the misunderstanding. Despite this, he rudely insisted that we vacate the room within five minutes. This aggressive and unprofessional behavior was completely unacceptable, especially for a 3-star motel. The experience was deeply upsetting, leaving us feeling unsafe and unwelcome. Timaru is a beautiful town, but this incident left a sour impression. Travelers deserve better accommodations—avoid this motel at all costs.
• Relax25242222075 (2/5): RUDE OWNER and Terrible Hospitality - Review for [Name of Motel or Motorhome Park]: Our experience here was absolutely terrible. We assumed the checkout was at 11 AM, as it usually is at most places, but apparently, it was at 10 AM—something they never mentioned during check-in. At 10:20 AM, a man started banging aggressively on our door, demanding that we leave. He was extremely rude and unprofessional—no greeting, no understanding, just hostility. When we explained we didn’t know about the earlier checkout time, he didn’t care. Instead, he threatened to charge our card for another night if we didn’t get out immediately, even though we were actively packing up. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. The lack of communication and basic respect for guests was shocking. Avoid this place at all costs—it’s not worth the stress or mistreatment.

Warm despite it being winter although the tiles in the kitchen and bathroom area were a bit cold :) Will definitely visit and stay again

• Scooter_NZ (2/5): Avoid this place - I would not stay here again. The room we had for our first night was terrible. The mattress on the bed sagged so badly I could not lie on my side of the bed. The shower did not work properly and the toilet seat was so loose that it nearly slipped off completely. Also the pictures of the rooms on their website do not reflect the current state of the decor. How do the managers not know the room is so bad? We did get moved when I complained, so our second night was better but overall I did not enjoy our stay.

• JohnW10589 (10/5): Avenue Motor Lodge Timaru - Excellent Motel to stay at - To every one who's reading my review,my mum who has a Disability,my brother an i,we stayed at this Motor Lodge,on Friday 29th October,the lovely couple that run the motel.they made us feel welcome,they also looked after us,and told me if we needed any thing to to see them an they would do there best,to get what we asks for,plus there Disability Unit was a very good one,its just like the hospitals,walk in with a wheel chair,it was very excellent Accommodation,we were all very happy with the service,the cleaners were very good as well,nices to chat to The Manger/Manageress,a very excellent lovely couple to as well chat to,so any one looking for accommodation go to that motel,they do there best,an i am very grateful,as well there meals are very nices Well done guys at the Avenue Motor Lodge,very high rated by me

Our booking was made and paid for online but we were charged again on arrival and put in an incorrect room type. The woman said our preferred room type was taken by an elderly disabled person. However when I confirmed we had double paid and went back to check - suddenly the room I was able to prove we did book & pay for WAS available! So we shifted into the room but actually regretted it because it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. They lent us air freshener and did provide milk when asked. Hopefully others have better luck than us and don’t end up lugging heavy bags up and down the stairs. Otherwise is probably a nice enough motel.

As always the service was impeccable and staff were super friendly. Faultless stay other than it wasn’t long enough - highly recommend giving these guys a call if you are stopping in Timaru to arrange a booking!!

We were not disappointed. The spacious accommodation was spotlessly clean and tidy and the bed extremely comfortable. Although on a main road we could not hear traffic at night. Very importantly all staff we encountered were very friendly and went out of their way to be very helpful with any special requests we made.

The rooms are big and spacious. All travel groups, business people or families could find a room to suit. Mark and his lively staff set the whole stay off. His local knowledge is impeccable, and there seems nothing he can't do, offer or suggest to help. True customer service at its highest. My partner commented and the small details, like having the fore thought to use dark flannels for make up, unlike many who use white. Small details and wonderful service at a very clean and comfortable location.

• Andrew (8/5): Most helpful reception - The help given in reception was very good ,room was newly refurbished and very comfortable.motel was very easy to find and the staff gave very good recommendations for eating in the town
• Trevor (8/5): - The room was relatively clean, with a small kitchen. We were put in room 1 which was a downstairs room with 2 single beds and a queen sized bed. The property had free parking but at night you may not be able to park right infront of the room. The bathroom cleanliness was slightly lacking, this may have been due to the age of the building, at one point the bathroom floor drains would leak smell, this was raised with reception who was very friendly and apologetic. The location was very close to the city centre.

• HLT83 (10/5): Spacious, modern, clean and comfortable! - We had a fantastic stay at the Avenue Motor Lodge and would highly recommend it. The owners were friendly and helpful and our room was fantastic. The room was huge with a private outdoor sitting area, the smell of the star jasmine hit you as soon as you opened the door - beautiful! We had a very comfortable King size bed, and the pillows were heavenly, you can tell they were great quality. All in all a great night away for a much needed break.

• Tee (10/5): - The room is clean, spacious and quiet. It has an attached kitchen equipped with cooking utensils. The toilet is also clean, spacious and has a jacuzzi in it. Mark, at the reception counter is very helpful and friendly. Overall is a pleasant place to stay in with free parking facility.

Host was fantastic- I had a webinar to do and asked if there was a more reliable internet. They gave me their strongest and rebooted their system for me. They couldn’t have been more helpful - was really impressed. Thank you 😊
• ED (8/5): Colorado couple - It was a one night stop over. Priced right at the time. It was clean and comfortable. Could use a little update. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

The Accomadation was wonderful Clean , tidy and comfortable Best sleep in a large comfortable bed .The lovely staff emailed me the day I'd left my reading glasses behind , They forward them onto my next destination by courier at their expense I could not recommend these wonderful people any higher

• Ngern Boey (10/5): A quiet home away from home! - Staff was very accommodating and friendly. We didn’t want the room on the second level as we are in our seventies and not so able to walk up the steps with our suitcases. He understood and gave us a spacious 2bedroom apartment with a jacuzzi on the ground floor. The motel is quiet but in an easily accessible areaa close to Highway 1.The staff also gave us detailed directions on where to go for food and shopping nearby. Highly recommended transit place for rest before starting our South Island tour.
