• GoPlaces30370739635 (10/5): A Silk Purse from a Pig’s Ear. - I stayed in the City Beach motel about 5 years ago when my usual business hotel was booked out. What a flea pit. Filthy everything, stank of stale tobacco (pillows smelt like an ashtray). Absolutely disgusting. To complete the experience at 11:00PM there was loud knocking on my door which turned out to be the police looking for some druggie. SO IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when on a recent social visit to Wollongong the now named Surfside 22 was recommended and turned out to be fantastic. The theme is retro but in a good way with clean quality fittings and furnishings throughout. It just needed a 60s American convertible parked out front to complete the look!
• Americain123 (2/5): Motel from Hell - The worst motel we have ever stayed in. It was dirty. Blood stains on the coverlet. The shower is above the spa and because of the design of the spa the footing was uneven and dangerous. There is no lift and entry to our floor was via a outside stairway and apart from being exposed to the rain it was also slippery and dangerous. Part of the stairway didn't even have a railing. Cleanliness is also a feature with cockroaches scuttling around the bathroom at night. It is very noisy with yahoos speeding around. Mattress was okay but only a few rocklike pillows. It made the fabled Fawlty Towers look like a palace. Never again, it doesn't matter where but not this dump. It would best knocked down and redeveloped. Only bright light was a charming and helpful couple running it.
• nothappy881 (2/5): Unfriendly staff, dirty rooms - The beach was nice, but the weather was horrible. Still - the worst aspect was not the weather, but the rude staff and the dirty rooms, not even acceptable in a cheap hostel, let alone in a motel. Not recommended!
• andymY8987OF (2/5): OMG....believe what you read....apart from being dingy,overpriced hole it is littered with dodgy people...one i encounte - believe what you read....dirty,smells of smoke...tired old bed and room...but the worst is the dodgy people hanging around...after hearing noises from downstairs carpark i went o look and encountered a bloke coming up stairs...with no business to be here...checking on my van i noticed more undesirables hanging around...unable to sleep now for fear of my van being broken into i decided to sleep in it....wheres the police when you need them...clean this hole up...its scary
• derbyf2022 (2/5): Mostly disappointing - The nearby beach is beautiful and the most positive aspect, but the location is otherwise very loud, being a main street. The doona looked old and possibly dirty. I do hope they wash it after every guest. The receptionist/manager was often not in the office, was not helpful with info and looked quite uninterested . There were no brochures about the place anywhere either.

• kenhG6718DX (10/5): Wow - This place was fantastic. They bent over backwards for me and my kids. We stayed for 4 nights. Great service fresh sheets and towels everyday. Highly recommended this place to anyone coming to wollongong..

Added to that its 1 block from the beach and one block from restaurants, cafe and city centre. Sure it can be a bit noisy with traffic and rooms are old, but its alright and a great location
• Verified traveler (4/5): - It was very dated and old. The stove was old and broken, bathroom was clean, but stepping into the old bath with overhead shower was inconvenient and slippery. I foot slipped and I sustained a very large and deep bruise on my knee. The bed covers were dusty, faded and smelt of stale cigarette. There were patches of torn carpet along the edge of the under bed area. There was old chewing gum stuck on the inside of the lighting pelmet above the bed. There were no spare pillows. Pillows were hard and uncomfortable. The bed was reasonably comfortable. The location was central and parking was easy.
• LizzicatM (2/5): No - What could anyone possibly say in a positive review of this place. It’s disgustingly smelly of tobacco smoke, dope, weed & an array of other smells. The carpet is stained, but the cockroaches seemed friendly. The clientele who come & go at all hours, doing who knows what - left us feeling nervous (scared) to be there, so we left early. If we’d known it wasn’t in a nice part of town we never would have stayed there & the desk person could have made us aware.

• seanbU255UR (2/5): Dreadful - It was like the staff were doing us a favour. The room smelled of cigarette smoke, the bathroom wasn't very clean and the shower set up was ridiculous. One of the powerpoints was getting ready to come off the wall. The bed was ok but that was it. Way overpriced for what it is. I've seen better rooms in dodgy pubs. Stay away.

Then at 6am a bloke decided to loudly tell his life story outside the room including all his fights to his dumb mates who guffawed their support. This continued til 8am when he and his mates disappeared or passed out or beat eachother senseless. Whatever happened the nightmare was finally over!

• Pandora3011 (2/5): DO NOT STAY! JUNKIE DROP IN CENTRE - We stayed here on a Friday and Saturday night. As soon as I walked into the foyer and saw a crabby elderly woman who looked unhappy to see us, I knew it was a wrong choice. No lifts, we had the top floor, 2nd storey. As soon as we opened the door, I was transported to the 1960’s. Everything was so outdated. I will admit the room was very clean, and the cleaning girl was very friendly. There are a lot of dodgy looking men walking around the complex, or standing on the verandah smoking, and NON STOP police presence. The walls are paper thin, the Friday night, the man next door must’ve been on his phone all night till 4am, we could hear everything. Then on Saturday night, at 7pm, if we made a slight noise, he would bang on the wall for us to be quiet. At 2am Saturday morning, we were woken to the sound of smashing glass, sounded to me like a car window. Next minute, in the car park where we park our car, a fight broke out, and a woman shouted that her car window was smashed. The language and noise was atrocious. I looked out the window to see a woman on top of a car, and the car doing burnouts trying to fling the woman off! The next minute she was flung to the ground. They were all under the influence of drugs. The noise kept us awake, and we were too fearful to leave our room as there were lots of undesirables hanging around the stairwells. The motel is very run down, and in need of desperate repair. The owner has to decide if she wants it as a drug drop in centre or an actual motel. I am just glad we had no children with us, as it was not a pleasant place to stay. In hindsight, we should not have stayed there at all. I have learnt a lesson, read Trip Advisor reviews first!!!!
• Guyelsn (2/5): Should have stayed in car - Where to start 1. The whole venue had a very strong smell of pot and cigarette 2. The room was outdated needs a major renovations still stuck in the 60's 3. The shower window was a clear glass window not a bathroom frosted glass and a security camera outside the window that looks to be looking into the shower

• jennypX8889SJ (8/5): Convenient - Older motel built in the 1960s even still has an actual bathtub instead of small shower cubicle,staff friendly and helpful, close to city and beach, stayed several weeks while son in Wollongong hospital and have returned several times, convenient location if you don’t mind the age of the building. Worth it for the convenience.

Balcony hand rails and concrete supports rusted completely through. Kitchen sink had no cold water, stove didn't work, Taps squeeled when turned on, could here people next door urinating into their toilet, shower curtain old and stained, cigarette butt and ash on toilet floor, push button on toilet flush not working without pushing with a stick, soiled window curtain, dirty shelves for plates and cups, under sink cupboard is disgusting, incorrect fitment of sink and stove leaving large gaps which harboured dirt. It appears this room has not been maintained for 30-40 years. The longer we stayed the more we discovered. On checking out, we told the manager and he said we should have asked for another room but also said that they were all the same. They should not have offered our room initially if there was any doubt about its condition. This list goes on. Wouldn't go there again. We would like a refund of our $200 or that money to go towards the owner spending it on some maintenance. Not happy.

• LazySusan28 (2/5): Avoid at all costs - My daughter booked a room at this hotel for herself & a couple of friends when in Wollongong for a sports competition. Even though it was made through booking.com the hotel overcharged them. With no other accommodation available they had no choice but take it. The place was dirty & noisy. Despite trying contact to phone & fax booking.com for a few weeks we have not been given a refund. Poor customer service from the booking agency!!

The spa doesnt work nless you apply pressure to The powerpoint n the bathroom. The bed was comfortable enough and the sheets and towels were of good quality. Major issue was, early evening I was relaxing on the bed (luckily fully clothed) when a group of young men opened the door with a key and entered my room. Turned out they had stayed in the room the night before and management had moved their luggage down to another room, but they still had possession of the key to my room. Im glad they were a decent group of young men, but still frightening all the same. Will not be returning!

• Cathc78 (2/5): Unhealthy - Don't bother! - On behalf of a friend: "I have come to visit Woolongong and have been shocked by the room. All the furniture was very old. It was a very unhealthy environment. The owner should be ashamed that she doesn't care about this old building that is close to the beach but is just falling down. We even watched a lady trip on cracked concrete near the managers office. There was a balcony with lots of people walking around outside and I felt very unsafe by the number of people standing outside my door smoking. The doorknob of our room fell off. In the morning we discovered that one of the towels was covered in caked on vomit. I asked for a refund but was refused. "

• Sarah (6/5): - Good location in its proximity to the beaches and restaurants. Quite a bit of traffic noise late into the night. Was supposed to have a family room with 1 queen and 2 twin beds, but one of the twin beds was a pullout couch. Not what we were expecting. It was clean enough, but pretty old a run down. There was no way to fully block out the lights just outside the room so there was a lot of light in the room all night: didn’t stop our crew from sleeping but can be a real problem for some.

My wife's comment that it was a brothel wasn't far from the truth. We were refused a refund due to Hotel. com policy and found another motel to stay the night. I am amazed that the motel is rated 3* as advertised on the Hotel.com site.

• eurotiles (2/5): PAID FOR 3 & GOT A IN - ROOM JUNKIE 4 FREE!!! - This place is not safe or Clean & should be bulldozed. That’s if the roaches don’t decide to shift this luxury establishment & cart if off. Our 6yr old is still traumatised. 🤬Sorry it’s long but the dishonesty of this place starts right @ the beginning & gets even worse by the end! My family was travelling overseas we decided 2 stop in Wollongong 4 one night. My amazing hubby could see how exhausted I was lately & took it upon himself 2 make the booking. He found this outstanding palace online. 🏰calls gets a lady she quotes $154 per night. We then discussed this & decided its in a good location as I always book the Sage & for $154 it should be in the middle bracket. He calls back a man answers hubby proceeds with booking & pays in full which concerned me as we normally pay on arrival. Hubby ends call he is very pleased with himself as I normally book & he knows he just earned brownie points with me. He then tells me his conversation. The cost was $180 a night BUT he got a discount as it’s just been sprayed 4 GERMAN COCKROACHES so he will drop it 2 $150, it has been throughly cleaned tho but may find few dead ones,& will leave key in lock box as driving 90 yr old mum home. We get there at 6.15pm & drove past 3 times not wanting 2 stop. OMG NASTY 🤢 🤮.I was determined 2 suck this one situation up & stay as hubby did a good deed. NO one was 2 be seen on arrival, key was in box with a free little milk. We proceeded 2 roach room via 2 flights of stairs into a dirty narrow corridor put key in door . It opens only 2 see dirt covered tiles that were broken. we enter to a horrific thick stench of a dirty ashtray, smoke,mould & urinal block smell. Shower curtain had mould, holes & stained & looks like the same age of the antique cast iron blue bathroom that was in fashion in the 1930’s. Carpet had cigarette burns, stained & critters 🕷🐜going about their business in all directions on floor, stove top, bed head. I touched the window curtain & my hand was left with a weird thick grease, towels were old, thin, Frayed & stained. Duvet covers must have been purchased in 1927. I went to open window were the old food port hole once was & suprise no screen! One positive air con worked. We dumped our bags as smell was horrendous so we went for dinner. During this time hubby called relentlessly to the desk to discuss room conditions & a refund. No answer. We get back to room at about 10.15pm 2 find our bags moved to door entry area, tv 📺 on, (2nd positive TV worked) brand new cigarette’s on coffee table,( hubby got excited as he thought this is service! “they supplied me with exactly what I smoke!” He was puzzled as to how they came by this information but was stocked until the realisation of me freaking out about what was going on set in)😱😱😱 I pad & iPhone charging, fridge full of food & a classy recycle ♻️ bag with a few items of clothing in it. Confused as 2 who owned items IN OUR ROOM hubby calls owner & out of nowhere a little skinny, worn, wrinkled looking lady appears with a cuppa that looks like she has hung out in more back streets then We have had hot dinners. We asked what are u doing in our room she couldn’t really answer this or understand what we were so upset about. She was more then happy to share our room.A guy wearing only shorts gets 2 door & starts with “whoops 😬 I gave wrong key by mistake”& trying 2 negotiate as his story was not adding up at all saying “Man haven’t u ever made a mistake & clam down”!2 my hubby who was extremely clam as our 6 yr old was petrified & crying. We demanded a full refund he agreed along with the comment u don’t intimidate me. I was still in room I could not lock the door as only had chain slider 🤷‍♀️ it was broken from being kicked in. I started taking pictures of everything as our belongings weren’t locked in cases. When leaving I asked our roomy do you see a problem here. Her reply No I’d rather make friends then anger???🤯 we then booked in at Sage after hearing our nightmare they upgraded us & gave free breakfast, parking & made a distraught son a hot chocolate. FINAL deception was when I looked up reviews on tip adviser 😲Poor hubby didn’t get a discount at all as everyone pays $154 🤣😂 And we are not the only ones to arrive back to an extra guest in room. 😉At least we were not locked out.

• Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice hotel, friendly helpful staff... close to everything, beach shops restaurants. Bit dated, rooms need some light handyman work
• Verified traveler (2/5): - I didn't expect this kind of service, no phone to contact the room service, blanket was unwashed and smelly. Too noicy people around, could not sleep whole night with kids. Druggies in the Motel. lights were not working in the room. I will never book this one again.

• ckohnert (2/5): Cockroaches everywhere - We slept with lights on, as much as we were able to sleep. Usually pest control works to make roaches disappear but the entire furniture and the wooden planks behind the bed are full of alive cockroaches that come out when it gets dark and wander around.
• Stephen (2/5): - In need of total renovations. Air con didn't work, carpets weren't vacuumed. Bed rock hard, linen was dirty. Fridge rusted 1st 10 minutes of checking the owner totally abused people staying upstairs. Than he wouldn't come near us. About 11pm someone in a unit next door shattered a glass wall, no sleep til 2ish. As the owner than had to fix it. Than awake by someone yelling, and thumbing on walls.... Wished I read other people's comments before booking... Stayed in better accommodation overseas, and paid less...
• Daydream38517090296 (2/5): Locked out - Got locked out of my room when I went to go in there The locks were changed and some random guy was staying in the room with with all my belongings just shoved in the cupboard lucky the guy was honest and we got our stuff back
• Danny (2/5): - Very disappointing and bad experience. The room was old and outdated. The door wouldn't even shut properly. The sheets were stained and the pillows were too. The carpet was filthy and stained. The whole hotel should be either shutdown or totally refurbished.
• 77kristie (8/5): No frills, friendly service, great price and PERFECT location - The room and little kitchenette was perfect - built decades ago but did the job. It is just metres away from the entertainment centre and the Illawarra Brewery which has a kids menu and play area. It's close to a great little park across from the beach - can't fault it. Charming 70s old school comfort. location makes up for the mild shab.
• dendavid2014 (2/5): long weekend - The room when we first walked in looked ok and for $154.00 per night we didn't expect 5 star accommodation...However after putting down our bags about a dozen small black bugs went shuffling around the kitchen and from underneath the bed. The shower had no water pressure and the bath tub was full of bugs as well. I went to open the window and the curtains were disgusting full of stains as was the carpet. The bed was terrible it had a huge hollow in the middle and the pillows were flat like cardboard. Needless to say it was not a good experience at all. In fact we woke up Sunday morning and after deciding we were leaving after we had paid for 2night I went down to reception to find nobody there as he had gone shopping. I had to leave the key with the cleaner...Will not be going back here or will I recommend it to anybody.

• houly38 (2/5): Disgraceful - Where to start ... Just don't do it ... Don't believe advert sign saying Internet or Foxtel ... It's a lie. . Room smelt of very old tobacco and mildew .. Carpet stained and filthy, bed sheets smelly and crinkled( I slept on a towel) Having stayed in 3rd world places ie Bali, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and never stayed anywhere as bad as this !!! Needs to be knocked down !!!
• danny (4/5): Great location - Check in really good. Woman at counter was very helpful. Rooms have no smoking in but smoking outside so rooms and linen all smell of smoke. Avoid lower and middle rooms.
• britt (2/5): Dirty!! - The only good thing about this hotel was the price and the location the sheets were stains on every bed and the toilet was broken and falling apart and not enough parking space
• MJ (6/5): Perfect location, clean, very dated decor - Absolute perfect location. Short stroll to beach, stadium and great selection of restaurants. Walk to shopping centre. Very clean but decor old. No lifts so must use stairs to rooms. Hard to sleep with outside lights shining through kitchen and therefore entire room, so pack an eye mask if you like darkness. Good shower. Beds hard but comfy. Good motel for the price. Would stay here again.
• Rusty (6/5): - In desperate need of some TLC but room air conditioned 50m from the beach, opposite Win Stadium and the Entertainment Centre, 8 different types of restaurants within 100m I think it was a great find. Staff exceptional.
• Pete (2/5): Motel requires complete refurbishment, very old - The clientele are rough, outside of building untidy. No lift dark outside stairs to get to rooms. Rooms themselves even though they tray to keep them clean are dark, lights do not work, no controls for the A/C unit. Not enough pillows, bathroom old and shower in bath not suitable. No soundproofing in between rooms,could hear people fighting next door. Outside noise was very loud. Bed terrible.
• Wendy (6/5): Hotel close to Entertainment Area and beach. - Very close to city centre. Comfortable bed. Motel is in need of refurbishment.For a motel of this price you would expect more.

• Shirley (4/5): Good position. Close to beach and Footy Stadium. - This motel is in urgent need of an upgrade. Our room was old and worn out. The kitchinette needs to be ripped out. It is disgusting. Walls are paper-thin and can hear all noise from next door. Bathroom is old but functional.

• Lyn (4/5): A tired old motel - Position wise it was excellent, but it is a very tired old motel. The bathroom and kitchen areas were very old and the ptaps were very hard to turn on or off.
• Verified traveler (4/5): Close to beach and CBD. - Air conditioning/heating did not work. Wifi connection repeatedly failed to connect. Bed not made after first night.
• Kristy (6/5): Only good thing about it was location. - Great location within walking distance of everything. However hotel is run-down & the amenities of the room are older than me! Cleanliness didn't seem bad, but the state of the carpet makes you wonder. Aircon didn't work & we received no response when we brought it up. Unfortunately although close to the beach the window only let noise in. The bed, or should I say 2 single beds pushed together, was uncomfortable with massive use impressions. We stayed for 2 nights & after the first we were specifically told we'd not be getting fresh towels as we'd only checked in the day before. We were very glad to be checking out of this place!
• Bear (6/5): Glad it was a one night stay. - When we arrived there was no one at Reception, at three in the afternoon we had to ring the night bell for attendance. The floors were covered in sand. The furniture was chipped. The hairdryer in the bathroom was broken and had a sign written on it DO NOT USE. The sound of the televison in the next room kept me awake into the early hours of the morning. There were no pamphlets or writing materials or wifi. The placement of the shower head over the spa bath made it difficult for the water to reach you for showering causing you to place your feet in a hiking position up hill to gain some water to wash off the soap you have rubbed on. When we left at 8.45am we had to ring the night bell again for attendance to hand in our key and were met by a shirtless, pyjama bottomed half awake attendee. Choice!
• CJ (6/5): Basic rooms in a good location - The room is a good size but very dated. Bathroom ok but has old fixtures. The windows are not very thick so traffic and people can easily be heard. Exterior could do with updating as its not very appealing at first sight. Well located for Stadium, beach, bars and restaurants. If you want a place to rest your head then ok, if you like things clean and modern then maybe not.

• Nathan (4/5): Dirty & Dated - The room was very old & dated. It also wasn't cleaned properly. There was someone else's hair on the pillow case. Definitely not worth the $159 per night we paid.
