Guest Reviews
- john (10/5): - The great service from the lady at the front desk.
Always going out of her way to help. Like organising safe parking for my vehicle.
Probably the most happy efficient person I've dealt with for many years. Nothing teally
- Craig (8/5): Will stay here again on my next visit - Great location, very comfortable bed and excellent restaurant, staff friendly.
- ANDREW (8/5): Best place to stay - Convenient location N/A
- Phillip (8/5): Quite location clean - The pub is good meals Waiting long for a taxi
- Tracey (9/5): Comfortable and great staff - It was clean quiet and comfortable
The restaurant food is wonderful The price is exorbitant and the TV had exactly 3 local channels. Wifi was really patchy.
For over $300 a night that’s not good enough
- Susan (9/5): - It stood out in Nhulunbuy, the architecture and up keep made it a landmark in the centre of town The exorbitant cost limited out stay.
- Duguid (10/5): -
- Paulo (4/5): - The bed was very good, shower was good too. Airco was terrible, old model, very very noisy. TV did not work, internet slow and the breakfast was the worse I ever had, toast and instant coffee and the fruit was a platter from the day before. 338 australian dollars for a double room ended up being a rip off.

- Anna (10/5): - Family friendly
- Gardner (8/5): Suited the purpose of our visit - family birthday - Close to Nhulunbuy facilities More crockery, plates an drinking glasses
- Deon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Laura (8/5): Gove's Best Hotel - Poolside Bar and pool, birdlife around, unpretentious menu, friendly staff, great location.
Good old fashioned bathroom lighting, nothing fancy but best we've experienced for years at any hotel. Maybe because bathroom space so tight? The sheets were quality cotton which is what you need when the air con is not working well, but a great plus anyhow. Air con in our room didn't work.
Room was quiet and with a private garden outlook. But to call it an'oceanview room' is a stretch! Bathroom very small. Top crossbar of shower frame too low for a 6ft plus person. Inadequate bench space.
- WayneP650 (10/5): Very enjoyable stay - Very enjoyable stay. Room comfortable, standard of housekeeping very good. Staff friendly and helpful. Meals in restaurant were great, with nightly specials. Drink prices a bit steep, especially the cocktails. Self-serve continental breakfast was fine.
- Kristine (5/5): disappointing for the money - location was good, no WiFi in the rooms disappointing, no pick up from the airport poor breakfast, no airport shuttle, TV reception nonexistent
- Viliame (10/5): Exceptional -
- Samuel (8/5): Great customer service - The location was great a short walk to woolies and restaurant and bar next door I didnt want to say anything i didnt like but if there was one thing the Air conditioning could be upgraded as these box wall ones are quite noisy and click on and off during the night
- Keil (1/5): Bad - Requesting a refund for the stay. Air conditioner was broken in the room with temperatures being of 30+.
Requested new room but was not provided new room.
- Baira (1/5): Bad - Nothing in particular The staff had rudely spoken to me in a predisposition
- Sally (8/5): Great wet season hotel and comfortable rooms. - The room was well appointed and it was great to have a balcony.
Staff were really friendly. Staff were great but sometimes had to wait a bit to get seated at the restaurant in the evening.
- reneebH2986CQ (2/5): Do not recommend! Do not trust! - A staff member in the lodge mislead us over the phone with our booking which cost us a lot of money. They have not taken any responsibility for their actions and are simply putting the blame on us. Ensure that any agreement made with them is in writing. Do not attempt a verbal resolution. Do not trust the staff as they are obviously try to take advantage of transient tourists that pay their wage.
- Patrick (10/5): Always a pleasure staying at this establishment. -
- Dan (5/5): Passable -
- Sharon (9/5): Awsome will definitely return. - All the staff are very friendly and welcoming, central spot great place to stay as it has everything.
- Lyn (7/5): Shame abiout the sewerage smell. - Great food, great staff, great facilities. Sewerage smell in our room that resulted in lost sleep, it was so acrid. Reported it to reception, they said they would get the handyman to address it as a priority. Reception didn’t report back to us, problem was not fixed. It had a small kitchenette, no dishing washing detergent or tea towel, even after the room was serviced. Only 1 fork in the cutlery drawer
- Ses (9/5): I will let friends know that this would be a great place to stay great service, great accomodation and very helpful and - Friendly staff. Aggie was very professional and very accomodating to our needs as a visit to this place. I found the power switch was confusing. I wanted to charge my mobile but I didn’t know that I had to turn on the power switch to do this.
- HW08 (6/5): Nice Stay - Not a lot of choices in Nhulunbuy but the Walkabout Lodge was what you would expect with a good 3 star establishment. Rooms are spacious and clean while the food at the restaurant was very nice. Not a lot nearby by Woolies is less than half a km away. Staff were pleasant and efficient.
- Geoff (10/5): Very happy - Great staff, very friendly and good service.
- Peter (9/5): Unique accommodation in a remote location - Location had a pool, well kept green garden, backed onto Town Beach, central spot. Offered breakfast, lunch & dinner. Excellent service by all staff.
- Colin (7/5): Needs to be updated - Unfortunately the rooms are a little rundown. The food at the restaurant was just ok but the pool was very nice and the staff were very friendly and accommodating
- Matt (2/5): Very poor - The location was great Special request was not met
- Alexander (8/5): Comfortable, well fed and convenient. - Breakfast was just right and cooked breakfast on one day was good. The room and outdoors patio was excellent. Restaurant menu, facilities, and takeaway were excellent. Bathroom shower door did not close and the shower leaked on floor through side screen. Like all hotel bathrooms there was insufficient provision for storage of toilet bags.
- David (7/5): Good -
- Annette (4/5): Disappointing - Catching up with family The rooms were overly priced. There were were holes thatvhas been patched but not painted, the chair felt like ir was about to fall apart, remote uo TV didn't work, shower head was waist height.. for a room that cost 1500 for 5 nights not ideal.
- Mark (9/5): Always excellent when I stay at the walkabout lodge credit to everyone - All staff were friendly, food was again excellent N/a
- Jesse (7/5): Good - Has more than you’d ask for given it’s a fair way away from Darwin. Resturant, pool, rooms were great and it’s close to a major shopping centre and another pub next door.
- Joel (9/5): Will be booking again - Location was really good and cleanliness and staff fantastic. Aircon was a bit noisy and no way to adjust apart from turning off.
- Steve (8/5): Very good -
- Andrew (8/5): Good overall - Rooms are always clean and comfortable.
Good location. No hot food for breakfast.
Air-conditioning should be split system, not window rattlers.
- Dick (8/5): Enjoyable stay, though not value for money. - Very convenient location; popular meeting place; delicious food; friendly staff. Room air conditioners require servicing; bathroom toilet leakage minor but needs attention; TV shuts down very frequently; vehicle security not adequate unless requesting parking in campground; lack of staff to provide for breakfast in dining room (set food allocations provided in paper bag to room); very expensive beverages in bar.
- Conan (10/5): - Comfortable and friendly atmosphere.
- Westgarh (7/5): pleasant - good nothing
- Belinda (8/5): Very good - Beds are so comfortable! Good facilities and the restaurant provides good pub grub.
- Colleen (6/5): We enjoyed the fishing and walking - Bar food was quite good and reasonably priced
The restaurant meals were expensive for what was available There was little competition in town for anything else
- Paul (8/5): Given the limited options in Nhulunbuy the location is good and it overall is pleasant if you can put up with a bit of n - Location Noise from pool area at night & tavern next door, although it only carries on until about 1am so not all bad
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Grant (8/5): Very good -
- Howard (3/5): Poor - Breakfast very poor quality and overpriced Breakfast
- Pamela (5/5): Never again - Room comfortable enough, nice balcony overlooking camping ground not very private. . Extremely tired & outdated, old quilt on the bed did not look hygienic, removed immediately. Bed comfortable once quilt removed. Requested late check out when made booking through booking.com. Received confirmation by email late check out approved till 1130.
On date of check out extremely rude receptionist said she didn’t care what I had in writing check out time was 10am & would be charged extra.
- tonymans (4/5): Six nights in Nhulunbuy - If you like a level of accommodation of another era, this is the place to be. But first we must acknowledge Nhulunbuy is extremely remote, one of the remotest towns in Australia and it’s smack bang in the tropics, so things operate at a different level and pace. Don’t go in expecting a world class product. Most of the staff were very warm and welcoming, the house staff gentle and lovely. We stayed in room 112, so please avoid this at all cost. Supposedly the suite, it’s also bang against the bathroom and laundry for campers on the property. We had campers gathering around late at night and early morning chatting outside our bathroom window. There is also a repetitive pump, sewage treatment or compressor operating all night long, intermittently, every minute or so, winding up to somewhat of a roar then switching off again. The suite, at nearly $400 a night can’t be considered value for money and the kitchenette lacking in basics, such as a dish cloth or tea towel. A request to change rooms was met with “we’re full” and “we’ll check out the noise”, with no further words provided, other than “we require 48 hours notice to vacate”. It was later acknowledged that the pump has been rectified however the noise didn’t abate. Nhulunbuy is not truly on the tourist route yet, but it will be and they’re not ready for it. With the mine closing in 5 years this place will struggle if it can’t meet basic tourism requirements. The inclusive continental breakfast at Walkabout Lodge is seriously lacking - hardly any fresh fruit, no whole meal or grain bread, stale muesli, but in fairness probably reflecting supply limitations. The full chargeable breakfasts looked better if you want to spend more.
- Gardner (8/5): Very good - Locatio good dining friendly staff
- Tamara (9/5): Friendly Staff and good atmosphere - The staff at reception were so helpful and welcoming. The relaxed environment and just all round friendliness. The food was a bit hit and miss, I had beautiful barra one night and then a steak that I couldn't cut with a steak knife the next night. I did mention it, but it was very busy and I'm not sure if the staff took it on board.
- Ryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terry (5/5): Passable -
- Paul (4/5): - Lot poorer than prior trips everything blamed on time of the year but prices still expensive. Overall very poor
- Ben (8/5): Very good -
- Chris (8/5): Very good -
- Rodney (9/5): Superb -
- Robyn (10/5): Our first trip to Nhulunbuy from Galiwin’ku; we will definitely try and do a getaway weekend trip another time! - Everything was fabulous! Price was a bit too high
- Manuela (10/5): Fabulous hotel, welcoming , great staff. Shelley at reception was amazing, with wonderful advice, on car hire and place - Everything. nothing
- Kerry (9/5): Superb - From check in to check out the staff went out of their way to be welcoming with a high level of service all round. Continental breakfast was great. Plenty to choose from, and I really appreciated the different types of ‘milk’.
Dinner was delicious and the service faultless. Hopefully next time we will have time to take advantage of the very inviting pool.
- Patrick (10/5): Staying at the Walkabout is always top shelf, that's why l stay there. - Breakfast was good, location great The weather was fine and hot!
- Penelope (9/5): Its always a good stay at the Walkabout :) - Breakfast was good. Plenty of fresh fruit, nice yoghurt and different cereal choices, tea and coffee. Front desk staff very helpful and friendly. the basin in the bathroom needed a good scrub, some dirt up around the lip of the basin which is yucky for cleaning your teeth! The cafe ran out of soy milk which meant I couldn't get a coffee (not a big deal, an understandable, but still a shame I couldn't have coffee)
- Ann (8/5): Very good - the swimming pool, the staff the bed could be firmer
- sydneysider48 (8/5): Basic but comfortable - The Lodge provides basic but clean, comfortable and well maintained accommodation with a pleasant restaurant, outdoor area and pool. Over two nights, the meals in the restaurant were fair average quality, although a minute and very dry serve of Tasmanian salmon was regrettably misrepresented as “fresh caught reef fish” and was served on a bed of overcooked rice with a few wilted lettuce leaves. Breakfast was very sparse. Staff were friendly and prices were surprisingly reasonable for such a remote location.
- Brian (3/5): Poor - Just and average motel Very expensive for what it was. TV only had pay-TV channels, not free-to-air. Restaurant was fairly average and wine selection was poor. Front desk staff were a bit surly.
- Sam (9/5): Superb -
- anna (4/5): - Setsew
- tysonl562 (2/5): Don’t ever book this hotel 👎 - I’ll start by saying, the first in counter with a staff member as we walked into the lobby to check in.
That should of been the time i turned around i found somewhere else to stay.
No hello, how’s your day going Or even a smile. That was the start of the hospitality service, that this motel was going to offer me. Throughout the stay I felt uncomfortable. When I entered the dining/bar room to get a drink at one point around lunch time to go have a nice time around the pool. I was greeted by a lady that just said “ WHAT DO YOU WANT”.
There was many other things I could list off but I’m going to finish with.
PLEASE… take my advice and never EVER book a room at the walkabout hotel you will regret it.
I’m in the hospitality trade and I run a few venues and I am thinking buying the surf club around the corner, and show them what real hospitality service looks like.
- CanberraJenny (10/5): Good motel and meals - This place was very busy. The staff were friendly and helpful. The property is clean and well maintained. The room had a door leading to an outdoor area or balcony. The pool is lovely. The meals were delicious.
- Getaway41995731105 (10/5): A welcome oasis - Clean comfy rooms, well appointed, great views, reasonably priced, quiet. Well situated easy walking distance to town centre and beach. A lovely pool beside a covered outdoor eating area. Great meals served, and reasonably priced. Well stocked bar. Fabulous friendly staff who were very helpful with all aspects of our stay
- patricialehfeldt (10/5): Fantastic staff! - The drive from Daly Waters to Gove was quite a journey! Arduous in fact as the track was full of pot holes and we got two flat tyres on the way. Therefore our check in was around 9pm and we were worried that there would be no one to help us. We were wrong. The staff were so welcoming and went out of their way to ensure we were looked after. I think they could tell we were exhausted and frazzled.
I would like to give special mention to Michael who went above and beyond to ensure we got some food before the kitchen closed. He even delivered this to our room so we could settle in.
How lovely to find that the air conditioning was on and perfect, the TV easy to navigate and most importantly, the ensuite was large and the shower hot. I especially appreciated the over head fan as well. Breakfast the next morning in the attached restaurant was continental with a selection of pastries, fruit, cereal and toast.
Agnes in the restaurant was so friendly and made the best coffee. We dined at the restaurant Latitude 12 for all our meals as they were large in portions and reasonably priced for a remote location.
At dinner, Lucy in the bar made the best French Martini’s and served us with a smile. For those who look at the price and expect a 5 start hotel, please remember the remoteness of this hotel and the fact that they rely on a barge twice a week to deliver essentials. We felt so welcome and will definitely stay here again.
- stuart lee (10/5): - Very quiet
And friendly staff
- Simon (10/5): Nice accommodation, Friendly town - Room was very clean, on arrival staff were very friendly. Room smelled pleasant and was serviced between nights. Tea/Coffee was replenished.
- Eugene (8/5): Great property - Business trip - nice short overnight stay.
- 109loum (10/5): Comfortable and relaxing stay - We spent 3 nights at Walkabout Lodge and it was beyond our expectations, the room was very comfortable and well maintained.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, the woman at reception was amazing and made you feel so welcome, a pleasure to deal with. The entire staff we encountered throughout the lodge, cafe, bar and pool were friendly and accommodating making our stay a pleasure.
Well done
- 224jakec (4/5): Really rude service - Really rude and bad service.. lady who runs bar at restaurant area is really rude to customers.. while paying top dollar for food and drink customers should not expect this kind of service. This is not only a once of occasion as well
- 641tonyw (8/5): Nice - Worth a visit, Rooms are comfortable, facilities are very good. Restaurant offers a good menu, well priced and good service. Nice pool and outdoor area, a great place to relax for afternoon drinks. Central to all facilities.
- Belinda (10/5): - Friendly staff, great clean neat tidy rooms. Would certainly stay again when I come back to Gove.
- Rod (8/5): - More like a pub than an expensive motel. Food was good though and room was good. Just very expensive for what it is. So just know you are paying for the remoteness not the quality of the hotel.
- Stanthorpe (8/5): Easy and well located Nhulunbuy accommodation - The staff here were super friendly and went out of their way to help us. When our taxi was late, Shelley at reception just bundled us into the Hilux and dropped us at the airport herself. She would not take money and told us lots of excellent local things to do. Big thanks Shelley.
Rooms are simple with everything you need. There is a microwave and a kettle and minibar fridge so freezer and cooking options are limited. We had our own camping gear for that. The bar and restaurant are pleasant with nice views to the sea. The meals were a little overcooked and we heard they were a little hit and miss depending on the chef.
We stayed twice in between camping and were very happy with the lodge as a drop zone to refuel between camps. Also the chopper dropped into the grounds for tours and transfers which was cool. We could also leave our vehicle here for a few days which was great.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The rooms are tired!! Fan looked like it was going to fall out the ceiling. The beside lights did not work. The television worked intermittently Aircon was so noisy.
Shower grout was dirty As was the kitchenette area
Just tired.
- Michael (8/5): - The people were fantastic and great place to stay.
My only criticisms was how hard the bed was.
- olie293 (8/5): Nice place to stay - The hotel was a good place to stay while waiting for our trip to northeast Arnhem land. The staff were lovely and very friendly. Breakfast was great as was the dinner at the restaurant. The room size a good size, good shower and nice comfortable bed. Great number of plugs for all your electrical devices.
- JillH278 (6/5): Nice stay - Although a little tired, this accommodation and restaurant was very clean, the staff very helpful and the ambience good. It was nice to have our room open onto the courtyard area with a pool. The restaurant food was delicious.
- Richard (8/5): - Interesting town. Hotel was OK but a little expensive for the standard
- 632pc (6/5): It might be the best in town - There's not much choice of accommodation in the town and this may be the best however it fails in a few ways. The overhead fans in the bedrooms need fixing. They are wobbly and noisy - so wobbly that you are afraid they will fall on the bed. The bed is not very comfortable. Staff was good and breakfast was typical hotel buffet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great staff. Friendly service. Good atmosphere. Coming back again next year for Garma Festival.
- Kateo85 (10/5): Great camping facility - We stayed here with a large group in the camping area.
The facilities were clean and great!
The camping area is fully secured by fences and has both powered and unpowered sites.
Highly recommend to anyone going to Nhulunbuy.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I do not like the fact that I have emailed Wotif twice and place of accommodation once seeking a refund of additional guest fee of $74.73 because additional guest was not able to come. As yet I have had no response. This is very poor service on behalf of Wotif.
- HaggisRipsnorter (6/5): Basic accommodation but great food - Stayed here a couple of days at start of Outback Spirit tour. Accomodation is pretty basic but the food was very good.
Highlight was the dusk flight of thousands of flying foxes flying down the coast to their nighttime feeding grounds. It took about 15 mins for them to fly past. A natural wonder.
Avoid the weekend kids water slide parties during the day!
- holidayloverN5875AE (8/5): Lovely stay - Lovely stay on 21 and 25 May
Excellent meal friendly staff frances and vytas close to shops restaurants continental breakfast free buffet $14 excellent In Nhulunbuy close to gove airport
Been there 2015 2017 2019
Maybe come in 2 years time do Lirrwi tours aboriginal homelands Bukadal and bawaka unknown paradise
Friendly and talented people makings painted didgeridoo and sea shells
- 289lisaa (8/5): Great location - Our son was invited to the area - we stayed at the Walkabout Lodge for 5 nights staff were so friendly and went out of there way to help. The menu was fantastic my husband thought the steak was the best he has had in a long while. Breakfast was included. Weather was fantastic and the kids loved the pool
Thank you
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was well maintained and the staff were very courteous and helpful. The food was excellent and reasonably priced.
- GAZ (6/5): Limited choice - Room was clean. Staff were busy but polite. Rooms small and bathrooms very cramped. Not a lot of choice in Nhulunbuy and way over priced for an obvious 3 star hotel at $330 a night. Meals expensive but again not a lot of choice do Owner’s capitalising well.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location is good and the restaurant is well positioned.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good location - Really nice staff
good restaurant
Great spot for campers
Need more car parks
