Guest Reviews
- Rae (10/5): - The Gardener's Cottage was authentic and quaint, an original building but updated for comfort.
We especially loved setting the fire and enjoying the cosy ambience and warmth. The sunset from the window was like a Wolfhagen or Wagner painting, two accomplished artists who appreciate the vistas in this part of the world.

- Julie (9/5): Wonderful to immerse ourselves in times gone by. - Beautiful period accomodation with great little touches and decor. Loved the guided tour- made the history of this world class time capsule come alive. Creaky, but safe, steep stairs - to be expected with the period
- Diane (10/5): -
- Stephen (10/5): -
- Lorraine (9/5): - The historic accommodation and surroundings The rounded gravel car park surface was a bit slippery.
- sandra (7/5): - Area

- Steve (9/5): A delightful surprise and a real step back in history - we loved it. - Real old world charm - you are staying in a cottage virtually unchanged from 190 years ago (except for mod cons).
The entire property is expansive and is an open air museum with lovely views across the landscape.
Having a washing machine and dryer in the cottage also a big bonus. Toilets are on the ground level (down creaky stairs from the bedroom loft).
- Stephen (10/5): - 1830s Gardner's cottage on estate. Walk to restaurant, visitor centre. Cottage blended old with modern. More colour warning strips on step between kitchen and bathroom.
- ANTHONY (9/5): Lovely cottages in a historic location close to the main town. - We made our own food which is a bonus when staying away. Location is great, quiet and only 20 min from Launceston. We would have liked to have done the buggy tour the next day but unfortunately the staff had meetings. Not really anything negative to say about the property.
- Peter (9/5): Comfortable and historic cottage most convenient for a stay near Launceston. - Very cute, historic cottage with all the modern amenities that we could need. We also enjoyed walking through the exhibits in the other old buildings. We didn’t have any problems at all with the cottage
- Janice (9/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): -
- David (10/5): A breath of fresh air; literally and figuratively - An amazing location inside a World Heritage listed site. How often can you do that? That I had only one night. I was missing a pen to fill in the survey
- Nanette (9/5): -
- Mark (8/5): Great setting and location. - The setting. The drinking water container.
- John (9/5): -
- Alan (9/5): - Had a nice lunch, Old buildings and contents very interesting. Convict history very interesting.
- Greg (10/5): Recommended to family. - History & heritage.
- Mark (10/5): Woolmers delight - What a delightful surprise.
All the little extras it was very impressive and made us feel most welcome especially when we had previously stayed in a coastal town and it cost more with so much less value. Woolmers is a fabulous and pleasant place to stay and I wish we had more spare time to have stayed longer.
Staff we encountered were helpful and pleasnat to deal with
The early settlement history is amazing, something we don't have to the same extent in North Queensland.
Looking forward to returning. A suggestion, maybe a food hamper made available would help as to get supplies you need to drive back into town. Not a big deal to do though.
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Colleen (9/5): - This was a very historical cottage, it felt very original, yet comfortable
- Greg (10/5): Really enjoyable. Glad we have plans to return - already booked! - Unique experience and History
Cleanliness
Dedicated staff Booked two rooms but were separated by quite some distance.
- Paula (8/5): -
- Annika (10/5): - Beautiful historic estate. Lovely cottage with lots of charm and atmosphere.
- Susan (9/5): Fantastic, historical stay, highly recommended - Historic cottages on a UNESCO World Heritage convict site - incredible opportunity to experience our history.
- Jenny (7/5): - Loved the ambience - so much history and the properties interesting and beautiful. The cottage (coachman’s cottage) was plumbed to river water with 10 litres drinking water provided. This would be okay except for the fact there was absolutely no information in the cottage to tell us this, we found out when we checked out. We guessed the drinking water meant the tap water was not for drinking but a sign woukd be very helpful! The provided tea bags were also neater and someone had mixed in peppermint teabags with the normal ones so everything tasted peppermint. These are small and easily fixable things which would have made a lot of difference.
- Kathryn (9/5): Great place for a getaway! - Loved all the history of Woolmers and the ability to wander through the property looking at all the old buildings. The cottage we stayed in was clean and comfortable and had all the facilities we needed.
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Samantha (9/5): Beautiful surrounds, lovely cottage, very cozy, would stay again - Fabulous location lovely to be part of Australian history
- Paula (10/5): Peaceful and restorative! - Peaceful countryside location and Heritage buildings
- Cherie (7/5): Peaceful setting for a relax. - Location Bedroom on different level to toilet
- Glenda (10/5): -
- Melissa (10/5): -
- Daphne (9/5): - Location No aircon
- Alicia (9/5): Wonderful place to stay to celebrate a new year arriving. Felt very comfortable and rejuvenated after this special exper - Location, beautiful gardens and historic house that we could walk around in the evenings giving us a unique experience. It had everything we needed and nice quality. Very quiet and peaceful. Nothing really but a few more clothes pegs would have been great.
- Mark (7/5): A wonderfully peaceful and historic atmosphere makes it all worthwhile. - The location was beautiful. Because it was a holiday period, there were no tours so, the peace and quiet was wonderful. Historic buildings were not well maintained. Rusted rooves, cracked paint and the additions of cheap, non period pieces were quite disappointing.
- Chi Wai (10/5): - A historical site and special experience. The check-in experience is amazing and user friendly.
- Sara (8/5): We will definitely be back when everything is open - Was such a pretty location and was so lovely to stay outside Launceston. The grounds and buildings were fantastic Wish we were staying when everything was open and had the tours operating - they looked fantastic. Also I think they must have sprayed for bugs before we arrived which makes sense on a rural property but just a lot of dying bugs inside
- Lauren (9/5): Beautiful historic cottage and estate. - Beautiful and quiet cottage on the estate, very clean and tidy, the bed and pillows were super comfortable and cosy. Linen and towels were lovely and clean. Appreciated the small glass of port to have by the fireplace. Kitchen had all the essentials, although it would have been nice to have had a small local hamper of breakfast goodies, considering the price. But otherwise we loved our stay here and really enjoyed wondering the estate and enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside. Everything was fantastic especially considering the age of the property, the stairs do creek but it’s to be expected and not really a bother. The fresh water provided would be easier to manage if it was in a proper stand alone water dispenser with a proper tap.
- Evans (10/5): - Beautiful character cottage
- Ros (9/5): A Step Back in Time - Lovely quaint cottage. Nice little treat of chocolates and port.
Interesting books and magazines for reading. Comfy bed.
Thoroughly enjoyed roaming around the estate. We enjoyed a tasty Devonshire tea in the cafe. Staff in both cafe and shop were very friendly.
Nice quiet rural location. Certainly recommend it as a nice place to stay. Cutlery was a little light on with only one dinner knife and two bread and butter knives. Saucepan lid missing and a non-stick frypan would be good.
- Scott (9/5): Great place, look forward to staying again sometime. - Lovely property & grounds, cosy & comfortable cottage. Stairs to bedroom are extremely squeaky, but we expect that can’t be helped in a building so old… a bit annoying in the dead of night when one has to use the bathroom, but also adds to the historic ambience!
- mirela (8/5): - Beautiful surroundings and quiet, fresh air, gorgeous rose garden at the back of the cottage. There was a peculiar smell in the cottage and very dusty living room, reason we did not use it.
- Christopher (10/5): -
- yvonne (9/5): Thoroughly enjoyable - Historic
Peaceful
Comfortable
- Kristy (9/5): A special experience - Beautiful, peaceful location, well equipped kitchen. Clean, cosy and comfortable No laundry facilities
- Clark (9/5): Loved the character and charm of yesteryear - did not have breakfast nil
- Susan (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): I wish I could have spent more time. - The ambience, the cleanliness and the friendly helpful staff who made it a great choice to stay. Can’t say there was anything I didn’t like.
- Michael (5/5): You need some repairs . Gardens around cottage unkept . - No breakfast, views lovely. Broken front door latch. Very drafty. No room to placefor suitcases . No washing machine. No breakfast . No chance to look around as it was shut too early up for us to look around. No human contact.
- Lindie (9/5): We arrived in the dark and left in the dark due to early flight, the cottage was lovely and warm when we arrived, it was - I loved the charm of the cottage It was hard to find the boom gate in the dark and it wasn’t very easy to find on the map, map was hard to read in the dark, maybe label the lock boxes on the map and not have ’you are here’ at the top middle, i think that is what disoriented us a little
- Anita (9/5): - Very clean, beautiful setting,amazing gardens
- Karen (8/5): Peaceful cottage stay at Woolmers is highly recommended. - The location of the cottage within the Woolmers estate meant it was very peaceful and the surroundings are beautiful. The wood fire was great for a cool evening. Very comfy king size bed upstairs. The map showing the cottage location could have been more helpful. Also, the tap water has to be boiled before drinking, something we didn’t know about when booking. The hosts do provide a 10 litre container of fresh water.
- Ron (10/5): Staying in such a beautiful cottage on a heritage estate finushed our Tasmanian holiday in the most perfect way - We loved everything about the Gardeners Cottage. So much thought has been put in to the decor that is fitting for a heritage cottage. The slow combustion fire warmed the whole cottage, the bed was very comfortable & the linen was beautiful. Was very peaceful with gorgeous views but was only 5 minutes drive to Longford for dinner.
- Victoria (9/5): Comfortable and full of character - Beautiful home - historic, welcoming and comfortable. Beds were fabulous, great fire, and heaps of very dry wood. The staircase is very steep and in some places difficult to find a place for my big feet, it’s part of the house, its character and history- but something to consider before booking. The bathroom is downstairs so it means the stairs need to negotiated in the night. Regardless we LOVED staying in this wonderful coachman’s house
- Lita (10/5): Lovely - Heritage, history, gardens N/A
- Deb (8/5): A unique stay in quaint but comfortable accommodation on a UNESCO World Heritage listed, convict heritage site . - The location, on a UNESCO World Heritage listed site, allowed us, as paying guests, to access the historic precinct at Woolmer Estate, before and after opening hours to the General Public. This was very special as we could explore, and photograph, without having to contend with lots of people.
The accommodation, in the original Coachman’s Cottage, was pretty much exactly how it would looked from the outside, nearly 200 years ago, but we certainly appreciated the modern conveniences of electricity, hot and cold running water, an indoor bathroom and toilet, and laundry facilities. The kitchen, although rustic, had a fridge, stove, oven, dining table and bench seats and a “fake” wood fire. The lounge had a built in combustion heater, and we woke to find our supply of kindling and wood replenished, every morning of our stay, a huge, and much appreciated touch as the weather was fiercely cold at that time.
And, on the hot water system was really great, giving very hot water almost instantly!
The nearest town, Longford, which had a brilliant IGA supermarket, was about a 10 minute drive down the road, handy for those last minute things we needed for meals etc. The very narrow, thin, spiral staircase which led up to the second storey and the 2 bedrooms, isn’t easy to manoeuvre. One of our group has
mobility issues but she managed, with the help of two reasonably able bodied adults, but you definitely need to be aware of this limitation.
Being an old building, there are draughts around windows and doors(keyholes) and the combustion heater in the lounge didn’t seal properly, which we remedied by putting some alfoil around the frame.
There was a coffee pod machine in the kitchen, which we didn’t use, so the 10L water container left to use with it, we used when we wanted boiled water for cups of tea. We ran out of this on the last night of our stay so perhaps some thought needs to be given about providing a larger supply for longer stays.
There were no instructions s regarding the operation of either the heater in the kitchen, or combustion heater in the lounge. We have had some experience with what yo do to get the best, most efficient use out of a combustion heater. As for the kitchen heater, we relied on Google, and fortunately had enough reception to get a response that gave us that information.
There was no lighting over the kitchen table and poor lighting in the lounge. The window over the kitchen table had a blind that wouldn’t stay down, which was an issue when we looked up on our first morning to find some “tourists” wandering around the accommodation we believed was for our private use only.
- Chris (1/5): You continued to charge me for two nights after I informed you , and the venue, three times, that the 2 Buckleys and 2 L -

- John (9/5): A unique setup in a magnificent location -
- Glenn (6/5): - Clean room and bar.
Dodgy dealings in the carpark
- Helan and Christopher (10/5): Lovely night stay in a historic location made by convicts. - The whole story of the area and the orchardist cottage settings. Comfort and calmness and the birds chirping in the morning. N/a
- Peter (8/5): Lovely location and cottages. - Beautiful Location
- Gabrielle (10/5): - Copy little cottage with a fire place. Wood chopped ready to go. Amazing history at the estate, almost like walking into a museum! Had a lovely bath and even an electric blanket on the bed. Would definitely recommend!!
- Silvana (7/5): Winter wonderland - Amazing history and location. Cottage well appointed The bed was very squeaky and not comfortable. Back door didn't lock. We felt very isolated as didn't realise till after we booked that they are shut down in June.
- Merran (8/5): We enjoyed the experience of staying in the Gardener’s Cottage built in 1830, the wood fire and the proximity to nearby - Loved the history associated with the area and the Convict Walk to Brickendon. We were there when the facilities were closed so missed out on seeing the Museum which we will visit next time if possible.
- Debra (9/5): Superb - very comfortable, warm & a wonderful feel, homely.
fire & heaters on when we arrived, bed comfortable. definitley coming back
- Kate (9/5): Superb -
- Jock (8/5): Very good -
- Marcus (10/5): Fantastic experience. - Having private access to the estate overnight. Nothing.
- Marianne (9/5): Superb -
- Fiona (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rimma (9/5): Superb - Having not heard of the place (and booking last minute with a major event down the road!!) and arriving after dark, I was BLOWN AWAY at sunrise!!! Stunning property, quaint cottage plus brilliant and discrete staff. Thoroughly enjoyed exploring the grounds with the little spare time I found on the Sunday!!!
Thank you so much for both your care and professionalism at my time of checkout (especially when considering I buggered up the booking AND was 2 hours or more late to leave as a result!!) A little kindness from cleaning/maintenance staff can go a very long way - thank you so much.
- Mary-anne (9/5): beautifully welcoming setting & accommodation - The property was very clean and welcoming The surrounds so peaceful and a great representation of yester-year.
Beds incredibly comfy and plenty of wood and heating. Disappointed to find option to preorder food packages on arrival. We were unaware of this offer and may have utilized it f we'd known pre arrangement required.
- E (10/5): what a beautiful clean historical place to stay - not kidding when I say wow I loved everything about the stay can't complain about anything at all
- Colin (7/5): Quaint cottage - Lovely quiet area. Quaint cottage. Comfy king size bed. Lots of heaters and fire. There was a blind missing in the kitchen area of our cottage , when I rang the caretakers number she said she thought it might be broken but that was it, no other suggestions or offers of a solution at all. She said no one should be around looking in at night .However there were lots of tourists walking round in the day time looking in and I’d have preferred privacy. Better signage to key collection is needed, luckily the shop was open and a lovely young girl showed us where it was but there were no directions provided in the arrival message. TV was also the smallest they could possibly find. There’s room for bigger.
- Kellie (10/5): Can’t wait to come back and stay - Clean, comfortable and absolutely lovely Restaurant not open for dinner
- Shona (9/5): Superb -
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mcgee (9/5): Superb -
- Wendy (9/5): Bucket list stay. Don’t miss the opportunity. - Peaceful, historic, warm and welcoming
- Coline (9/5): Superb -
- Ruth (8/5): Great cosy space, perfect for our enjoyment! - Cottage and rural feel We didn’t have enough time to enjoy!
We arrived in the dark, so just a bit tricky to find our cottage.
- Nikki (10/5): I really appreciated the opportunity to wind down, relax and have a quiet time. - The sitting room with a fireplace. Thorough information about preparing by bring food with me from Longford. I wasn’t sure if I was free to walk around and enjoy the grounds and main house.
- Pieter (10/5): Lovely cottage - It was a very quiet location and the cottage was lovely. The only regret we had was that we didn’t stay here a couple of nights
- Nicola (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay at Woolmers - all the history was just amazing.
- Roseanne (8/5): Value for money in a historic gem of Tasmania! - Bed was comfy & warm enough for a cold Tasmanian night. Fire worked well & warmed the space well whilst it was going. Bathroom upgrade is excellent. If you book the cottage, you have access to the estate as part of the deal - great! But, for goodness sake, put a gate in the hedge for the gardener's cottage so the occupants can wander straight into the rose garden instead of having to access from the back entrance 200m away! It's the only cottage located well away from the rest of the historic buildings.
Poor cottage is looking tired on the outside & needs a fix & a paint. It could also do with a hardy "english" garden to give it that "gardeners" vibe.
Need to capitalize more on the history & "chocolate box" appeal this cottage could have. How about it bit more information on the history of the property. These types of places are usually booked by people interested in the historic background.
- Maryanne (9/5): Superb -
- Susan (10/5): Our decision to stay 2 nights at Woolmer’s Estate as a trip finale was very special, comfortable accom, made feel welcom - We loved the coziness and immersion in preserved history; the feeling of welcome & belonging; the grounds & spectacular gardens; the written family & farming history. Very comfy beds. Such a unique & rich experience..
- Robynne (7/5): Good - We didn’t see anyone from the time we arrived until we left. The whole place was shut up and we had difficulty finding the key and the actual “house”. The bridge was closed but we didn’t realise there was nowhere to eat within a 20 minute drive because you couldn’t get into Longford. After driving all day we didn’t want to go back out and have to come back in the dark with the wildlife and no lights on the property. We didn’t see any of the attractions on the property which was why we went there. The accommodation was unique and comfortable but we left very disappointed with the experience.
- Dorothy (8/5): Very good -
- Cornish (10/5): Second stay - love the well equipped cottage - Quiet - no traffic noise
Rose garden and gallery Nothing - perfect
- Leeann (7/5): Historical experience - Quiet
