Guest Reviews
- Amanda (10/5): - All of it
- Leah (9/5): stay here in Mt.Gambiet - A beautiful hotel to stay at whilst exploring Mt.Gambier for 3 days.. Lovely, quaint interiors with large rooms.. it was great..
- Roseanne (9/5): -
- Chantelle (10/5): Absolutely stunning place to stay! Perfect for any occasion! - It’s always quiet, beautiful and clean. We loved our stay for night before wedding, wedding night and our 1st anniversary. We will be back to stay in the Colhurst Suite every time without fail. The bathroom is to die for and the little fake fire heater is beautiful. It’s absolutely perfect! The Colhurst Suite probably needs a bigger tv that is a smart tv to be able to stream movies, since it’s only Foxtel.
- Yashuai (10/5): -
- Doreen (8/5): Very comfy room and bed. - Location and privacy. The back entrance could be made to look more attractive as that is the first impression entry point.
- Robert (8/5): -

- Steve (9/5): Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover - It's Much Nicer Than It Shows from the Rear Entry - The room was lovely. We had a suite on the main floor (the Green Suite) - if you can book this you should. The bedroom was great - comfortable bed and nice linens and pillows. There was a desk area to set up a computer and charging equipment. The bathroom was fantanstic. It had been added on to the older building and was really a treat - great shower and jetted tub and a little sitting area. There was a refrigerator and kettle to make tea and coffee in the morning. The room had a private door leading to a rear deck/garden area where we sat and had a beer and wine we brought the evening we arrived. Overall, this was a very comfortable stay. You approach and enter the building from the rear - which isn't much to look at and initially makes you wonder if you made the right decision on picking the location. Turns out, we did. They had a kitchen and dining area but it wasn't being used while we were their but we hadn't booked any food service for our visit either so we didn't expect it. They did have a sister hotel a 10 minute walk, or less, away at which we had both a nice dinner and breakfast. It was Easter weekend and about the only place open. The check-in instructions said to call about 30 minutes before arrival, we forgot. The check-in person is located elsewhere so we had to wait for her to meet us at the property. Our fault not theirs. Once she arrived check-in was smooth and she gave us a thorough introduction to the suite.
- Murray (8/5): A pleasant stay with a difference, Colhurst House being a heritage building from about 100 years ago - Checkin procedure. The distance from the TV to the sofa was very long, so a larger TV would have been more suitable to the situation.
- Deepa (10/5): - Beautiful room. Good location. Everything was good
- richard (9/5): Delightful - Beautifully preserved period property and furnished in character. I think would be helpful to allow guests to use the cutlery and tableware in the kitchen as breakfast is not available at the property which is a constraint. ( if the onward journey is long and there is a need for an early start)
- Karen (6/5): Was very nice well located - Excellent location was able to walk every where. Very quite Back entrance to property. Driveway is poor
- Helen (9/5): Highly recommend - A grand old lady it was a privilege to spend time in. We were welcomed and given a tour of the communal area by a well presented pleasant young lady, and assured the kitchen dining and lounge areas were for use.
Our (white) room had ambience, was comfortable, and well appointed .... and we didn't mind the out of character added feature of a coffee pod machine. The bed was comfortable with lovely crisp sheets. The walkable central location gave a range of dining options, and was also close to the interesting "cave" feature in the centre of town.
The value for money aspect was excellent. There is plenty of scope for lifting the tiredness of the house, such as the carpets, but for us the overall lovely environment overcame the aspects that need attention.. Since we were welcomed to use the kitchen we did, as we had brought our own breakfast, but it was a struggle to find even 2 bowls, and there were only 4 spoons in the sparse cutlery drawer.
A visit to an op shop for crockery and cutlery that would add to the aged aspect of the house would cost peanuts and be a really helpful addition for guests.

- Anthea (9/5): Loved it - House was what you’d expect for a place that is almost 150 years old. Rooms very spacious. Bed extremely comfortable The stairs
- Rebecca (9/5): -
- Val (9/5): A little gem of a place - Very nice Nothing
- Lesley (8/5): A lovely old building in a bustling town, it needs more than one night to ‘do’ the area justice! - The host was there to greet us and show us the facilities in this splendid building! We were only staying overnight so didn’t really have time to make use of them.
- CHERYL (9/5): -
- Andre (8/5): Ok - Un peu hors norme Un peu vieillot.
- Sunil (10/5): A very unique experience - A unique property; extremely well maintained; excellent location; Slightly expensive: also can feel a little isolated if there are no other guests in the property.
- Angela (5/5): - Very poor amenities for the price.very ordinary
- Linda (5/5): Okay, but wouldn’t stay again unless it was updated. - Grand old house with a great outlook across the town The house is needing some updating. Peeling paint and has lost its welcoming charm it would have had once as a B&B
- Alan (8/5): -
- Stephen (8/5): - location to the city. we walked down to dinner.
the bathroom was next level!
- Harry (8/5): Lovely old house on great location - It was in a great location easy access to city with resturants!
Great bathroom with bath! Probably stairs with cases
- Ian (8/5): Some TLC needed in our room. Breakfast would have been nice given they had facilities to provide. -
- Jill (8/5): -
- Janice (10/5): One of the loveliest accommodation we have stayed in. - Spacious room and ensuite, grand guest lounge, efficient and friendly check-in process & staff, close to Main Street/restaurants. A charming building. Nothing at all.
- Michael Clarke (10/5): - Old world charm. We liked everything.
- Steven (10/5): Wonderful stay - Beautiful old house. Great location, close to everything. Staff were great. Highly recommended
- Scott (8/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): - Met at property. Location central, comfy bed and large room. Bath / shower a little difficult to get in and out. No kitchen access, did not impact us but may others.
- Mark (7/5): - TV was not working / conected
- Michael (8/5): -
- Sharon (9/5): I would definitely recommend it to others. - I loved the historic beauty of the house. Also, the fellow who met us to let us in was extremely helpful. The water pressure in the shower could have been stronger.
- Melissa (8/5): Great location, super comfortable and charming. - Great location! Property has so much charm. Comfortable bed. Probably due for a couple of modern room upgrades.
- Ross (6/5): Great location - Old world charm There was a breakfast room and kitchen that was not to be used, why have it at all?
Gardens and surrounding areas at the back needs work, looked tired and not well maintained.
- Monique (8/5): - Spacious room & bathroom. Nice Old details
- Kylie (8/5): Middle of town homestead close to everything - Older house with bedrooms done up, large suite bathroom as big as bedroom, light and bright Could hear upstairs at times
- Pellen (7/5): Good but in need of improvements - The size of the room was fantastic and the biggest I've ever experienced Very small milk, not enough for the 4 X pods provided, could have done with 2
The lampshade was broken, there is a dirty stain in the bath, while a nice touch to have the bath robes, they were very crusty and seemed old, the bed slid around on the wood floors and we had to keep pushing the 2 X bed bases back together. The decor is tired and old picture frame marks above the bed. While the stay was ok, this all contributed to the whole place being tired and in need of some improvement
- Melanie (8/5): -
- Michael (4/5): Has potential but pretty disappointed compared to how it was marketed. - Nice character building. Stained carpets, stained furniture tops, television did not work at all. Not for free to air or internet.
Unable to watch news after finishing work.
- Nathan (9/5): -
- Annette (10/5): -
- Sexton (10/5): Colhurst House is a well maintained historic building. - Historical ambience, style and comfort. Nothing
- Akman (10/5): Much more than I expected - It is a veey nice, quiet accommodation very close to ctown centre. It is an old house renovated to be an accommodation but I believe they kept the interesting and beautiful parts if the house so I could feel how the original owners of the house lived all these years ago. It was clean and comfortable too. Everything was very good.
- Michelle (10/5): - Beautiful old house, big deep bath, lovely big room, comfortable bed, walking distance to restaurants. Norhing.
- Doriane (9/5): -
- Brendan (9/5): Great lovely historic house. - The Room itself was great, loved the fireplace and the spa bath was fantastic. The water pressure in the shower wasnt great. The Wifi drops out a lot too.
- Jason (10/5): -
- Joanna (8/5): - Cosy bed No breakfast
- GLENN (8/5): Large and comfortable room in a beautiful grand old house - Close proximity to city centre, spacious room, beautiful grand old house, comfortable room with interesting furniture, efficient room heating and comfortable bed. TV was much too small and unable to be viewed from its location. A larger TV should be mounted on the wall so it can be seen from the bed and the arm chairs. Shower needs redesigning. Having the shower head over the bath tub was awkward to get in and out of and actually dangerous!! The coffee and tea making facilities were ok albeit a bit cramped.
- Tony (7/5): 有提升空间。也许引入资本。 - 十九世纪建筑风格,房间大,卫生间浴室新、干淨。设施基本齐全。 地毯陈旧。整个建筑有味。
- Rodney (10/5): Excellent room, great location. - Clean, spacious, extremely comfortable bed. Centrally located, friendly staff. Nothing
- Nicky (9/5): - Amazing room, great location.
- Nick (8/5): -
- Jamey (8/5): A charming estate in a great location - Huge rooms
Comfortable
Excellent staff Difficult to complain as this is a beautiful property and the staff were excellent. However if you are on the bottom floor the walls (being an older property) are paper thin. The couple above us were extremely loud and you could hear every footstep taken. Comes with the reality of an older, charming property. Our fireplace set off a natural gas alarm at 9 pm which was a bit alarming, apparently this was a known issue from the week prior so we were told not to use the fireplace. The gentlemen who showed up to turn it off was very nice However
- Chantelle (10/5): It was beautiful for our wedding night, thank you for being so accommodating - It was beautiful The noise from other people staying there.
- Jamahl (10/5): - Had fireplace in the room that really set the night off That I had to leave
- Jeanie (10/5): -
- Anthony (7/5): -
- RICHARD (10/5): Wonderfully comfortable historic house - The historic feel of the property has been well maintained with a good attention to detail. Very comfortable stay and good location near to the centre of town. We were greeted very professionally with an informative and friendly tour. Would definitely recommend if staying in Mt Gambier. I can't think of anything.
- Jiang (9/5): -
- Rod K (10/5): - We were upgraded and LOVED the room we we given - very luxurious and comfortable.
Fabulous service provided by India and her colleague (Tom?).
The old house is beautiful and you can still imagine how it must have been to live there. It was all great - perhaps some chairs on the decking or in the garden might have been nice but the weather when we stayed wasn't brilliant so we didnt miss that.
- Peter (9/5): Excellent - Location and comfort
- Julianne (10/5): -
- Wendy (4/5): Unique accomodation, over priced and inattentively managed. - Unique, good location. Easy parking - clean and spacious.
Comfortable bed - gas fire a nice feature. Very draughty / cold - appears to still require lots of work - general disrepair, lumpy rug lifted to find underlay the reason - see photo. Bed headboard flaking. Noted many rodent traps around the property and shared spaces (kitchen ) very poor.
Ground floor suite and noise from room above on floor boards from 7am woke us.
Very light room - window blinds, no blackout and no curtains.
Staff member met us there and apologised for casual clothes as arrived at 8.30pm and provided keys, directions to park and recommended partner hotel for bar / breakfast and left before we’d noted how cold the room was.
We were not able to use luxury features of spa room as heating was on fault mode with lights flashing. Called the staff to seek help but had unhelpful advice about this being usual, as this kind of heater is slow to work ? Called again and was told they would send someone to help, no help came. We also Wrote an email to them to complain at 10pm.
Dissatisfied at paying $250 for room only and it being a poor experience. Boutique yes, but definitely not luxury.
- christopher (4/5): I would not recommend this property, it’s run down and in a state disrepair - Not a great deal tbh Not very clean, lack of kitchen utensils, cold, draughty, nothing to sit on outside.
- Sandy (5/5): Disappointed with the overall experience - It was central to the city and roads we were looking for Needs a lot of maintenance
Dining Room should be working for a continental breakfast at least
- Tia (9/5): - It is a beautiful house with comfortable furniture in the rooms and lovely bathrooms.
- Dizzy Singers (8/5): - Live big old beautiful houses It is starting to show signs of maintenance not being kept up externally particularly
- Tony (8/5): Quirky but great - It’s a heritage building with period furniture as such slightly quirky. It had all we needed for our stay. Location is good and the hosts were great with recommendations and general help. Kerb view is from the car park which is not its best feature.
- Anton (9/5): A grand old house...the best - Colhurst house would have to be the best accomodation in Mount Gambier. Large rooms, very clean and old style homestead vibe. Fantastic location within walking distance of the main street. Nothing not to live about this place. Comfy bed, great view from the balcony. Really nice. Breakfast is not included. Would be good to have a light breakfast in the house as there is a kitchen and dining room. That would be perfect.
- Michelle (7/5): -
- Leo (7/5): Old style homes with funky smells and no hauntings. Great place - Very nice old style what I was hoping for. Not haunted so thats a bonus. Pulling up at the rear was a bit disappointing but seeing the front sorted that. The cleaning was not great but clean sheets is all you hope for. Dusting the banisters and a good carpet clean things can only get better.. great house over all
- Richard (9/5): - Location and architecture The parking and arrival is in the backyard which is ordinary looking; should be at the front of the house which is beautiful
- Kaye (10/5): Stepping back into a bygone era of opulence - Perfect location and beautiful old worldly home.
- Gerard (2/5): Unpleasant. - Location Check in process was convoluted and deplorable.
TV didn’t work
Unusual strobe light kept flashing all night - possibly smoke detector ?
- Luana (10/5): Elegance and central location - A magnificent period mansion with a lovely garden in the heart of Mt Gambier. Beautiful rooms and a spotless modern bathroom. Convenient off-street parking. Very helpful and friendly check-in with India.
We also enjoyed an excellent meal at the nearby Commodore Bistro.
- Anthony (10/5): Worthy of visiting - The feel Nothing
- Geoff (8/5): - Lovely spacious rooms
- Yvonne (10/5): Overnight stop - Lovely property.
Room was comfortable, although a little cold when we arrived.
Great location to walk into town & approx. 10 mins drive to local attractions. Soft furnishings in need of cleaning.
- Chloe (8/5): - Loved the character of the house, bed was very comfy, beautiful bathroom. Very very cold in our room, the fire heater didn't do much for warmth.
- Guy (7/5): -
- Jan (9/5): Lovely place - A wonderful property . We were in the lovely tartan room. The shower was in the bathtub which can be dangerous for older people (me)
- Lynsey (9/5): Lovely period home - nice room and bathroom, lack of shower gel in bathroom, noted dusty skirtings and under a chair.
- Russell (10/5): -
- Miriam (8/5): Very enjoyable and comfortable stay in a great location near the centre of Mt Gambier - A grand heritage house with very large rooms- very comfy and attractive accommodation Free to air TV would be good
- John (8/5): Good stay, place needs a little attention however price reflected status. - Large room, great bed No access to balcony.
No chairs or table on balcony or in the garden space to enjoy the building and garden space.
We were in the black room, some attention to detail needed, bedside tables rocked/shaky and fridge rocked/shaky. Little things that just need adjusting.
A little run down in some parts however a beautiful building close to town.
- Eija (7/5): Vanha tunnelmallinen talo aivan keskustassa - Kaunis, vanha talo. Iso, viihtyisä huone. Loistava sijainti. Talo vaatii ehkä vähän lisää huolenpitoa.
Muista pyytää ajoissa saapumisohjeet !
- Nicole (7/5): - Kamer was oké Foto’s zijn beter dan de woning zelf
- Balázs (9/5): - Intresting to spend a night in a place like this, despite some refurbishment is needed. Could park the car in front of the door, beutifull garden. The kitchen was quite outdated, and unfortunately, it wasn't properly equipped; we found it was missing a sponge and detergent. It could have been useful if these basic necessities had been provided.
- Lindsay (5/5): - nice old homestead ,maybe it used to be attached to the nearby church , big room, steep staircase , 2 balconies off the bedroom offering nice views over Mt Gambier The sign at the entrance says B&B no breakfast offered or provided. Pot holes in the drive way looked liked they had been there for a while . Dripping shower rose which had left a make on the base (shower over bath) so obviously been dripping for a few years ! A grand old Lady in need of a bit of TLC
- Liz (10/5): A wonderful stay in beautiful Mt Gambier - The room was generously sized and luxurious. Loved the bathroom! The grounds were lovely and great to have the option to access the kitchen.
- Gregory (10/5): Situated close to Main Street ideal for a stroll into town room is comfortable - Beautiful old house with period fittings & furniture. Comfortable bed clean facilities. Welcoming staff Daryl was friendly & knowledgeable about the house, escorted to room giving a commentary along the way which was great. Nothing much to dislike at all. Maybe keep in mind some rooms are up stairs so if you mobility issues ask for a down stairs room. Breakfast isn’t served anymore but there are a variety of options just a short stroll from the house.
