Guest Reviews
- Johan (10/5): -
- Kazuo (8/5): - 古い建物ですが清掃がしっかりされていました。スタッフの対応も大変良かったです。 冷蔵庫があったらより良かったです。
- Denis (10/5): Alles Tip Top 😊 -
- Azian (10/5): Relax and memorable stay. - Betel Nut Lodge is a small hotel right in the middle of George Town, perfectly located with places of interests and food all within walking distances. The rooms are very clean, quiet and comfortable although not big. I liked that internet is fast and staff very friendly. Definitely will recommend this little gem to my friends and can't wait to stay again if I return to Penang All is good..
- Kyaw (8/5): -
- Ahmad Zaris Atif (9/5): Lovely stay, worth the money - The parking is free, however you need to luck finding it first (if the one nearest to hotel is filled, you might have to walk a bit from your car to the hotel).
The check in/check out process was very smooth. The receptionist on both days was very nice and kind.
The room was nice. It's based on traditional build but still feel comfortable. However, the size is a bit packed so you might have trouble to move around. The location is also very good, very near to most Nasi Kandar, the alley tourist spot and terminal bus (11 min) The size of the room is a bit small but not troublesome.
- Kean Chye (10/5): Fantastic stay in an authentic Penang heritage hotel. - This 150 year old building has great charm and the owner has kept it as original as possible. The room is not big but it has the necessary travellers' facilities like fast wifi, en suite bathroom( not common in small Penang heritage hotels I've stayed), streaming TV and good air-conditioning, safe box. The place is very clean and quiet and the bed is comfortable( with feather pillows!).So I had a good sleep at night. The 24 hr staff are friendly although they can't communicate well in English. But, everything I wanted is sorted out by them. The security is very good whereby only guests are allowed entry with keycards. This will definitely be my small heritage hotel of choice the next time I visit Penang. None
- Thomas (2/5): Historic yes, location great, but not comfortable or charming. - Location is perfect for exploring the old town. Popular Armenian street is less than a 10 minute walk, and there is a shopping mall not far also. The shower provided plenty of almost hot water once we figured out how to turn it on. The internet worked reliably. The daily room make up was done reliably bringing us fresh drinking water. We were very disappointed in the condition of our standard room especially given what we paid - over $50 per night. There were large cracks in the concrete walls, chipped and blemished paint, uneven wall services, and what appeared to be water damage or mold in some areas (see photos). I realize this is an historic property but in no way did we find our room charming, inviting or comfortable as some reviewers say. Additionally, the beds were quite small and not very comfortable for a six foot tall person. As for the staff we only met one employee who seemed very nice and was quite attentive but he spoke little English, so we could not discuss our room situation or ask for local information. Overall, this was not a place we looked forward to coming back to after a long day of touring.
- Sydney (8/5): - The staff were just lovely, the bed was super comfortable and lovely to have tea and coffee in the room.
Staff also brought lemongrass tea and cake as a gift for Xmas and boxing days.
The location is brilliant too, easy walking to many key spots, or taxi right outside.
A beautiful historic building in a historic part of the city. The room was so small, taken up so much by the 4 poster bed.
Pity not to have a fridge but no room for it.
Staff didn't speak much English, and No WhatsApp messaging available... So we had to communicate mostly through emails.
- Puay Hoon (8/5): Wonderful stay - 1. Although it is a small hotel, it is clean and quiet. The first time that I have stayed in a so quiet hotel.
2. The security is also superb. Without the room card, you can't enter the level 2 of the hotel.
3. The gentlemen who man the counter both morning and night provide very good service. Good, keep it up! 1. The water flow of the shower can be bigger for better flow.
2. A bottle of hand soap is placed beside the sink.
3. Provide face towel.
- brian (9/5): Perfect little stay - extremely cute and clean little place in a historic building with a great vibe and atmosphere. The location was perfect. It was very safe and efficient. The room was on the smaller side but that was fine for me.
- Jennifer (9/5): Charming and convenient heritage hotel, good value. - Location is great and it’s fun staying in a heritage hotel with nice decor and details. Loved the bed. The complimentary Netflix was a bonus. The room was a little small (but fine for solo traveler). The staff were pleasant and competent on the basics, but couldn’t provide info about,eg, the best time to leave to catch a particular ferry, or recommendations on food in the neighborhood, etc. You need to be independent.
- Patrick (8/5): Beautiful heritage house. Our room was small, which we knew from the reviews. It didn’t bother us much as we were out al -
- Karoline (8/5): -
- Miki (8/5): -

- Tracey (10/5): Exceptional - Great service and location. Easy to find
- Bayram (7/5): Good - Location, clean, wifi is fast Room was little small for 2
The AC was a bit nousy
- Wee (8/5): Very good -
- Peta (7/5): It was pleasant and easy to get around - The location was handy to bars and cafes. The room was clean and quiet as I was at the back of the hotel. There was nothing to not like
- Melton (8/5): Lovely boutique hotel with very helpful staff - Lovely, old style boutique hotel with four-poster bed & very helpful staff. Set in a quiet backstreet in George Town but still with many eating places & bars within walking distance. Hardly anything to be critical of.
- Adriana (8/5): Very good - Very comfortable room
- Annaliza (9/5): Superb - A charming boutique hotel in heritage district—beautifully restored with vintage decor and modern comfort. Loved the serene courtyard, warm hospitality, and its perfect location amid historic streets. Would return!
- Laura (10/5): I really enjoyed my stay at Betel Nut Lodge. - I really like the location of the accommodation, walkable to so many different areas and restaurants.
It was nice to stay in a traditional space in this UNESCO area. The place was clean and staff always attentive and friendly. I particularly appreciated the daily flowers in my room and a knock at my door with hot tea and a treat. It’s the little things that make a difference! All was good.
- Susan (10/5): An absolute gem! - This place is an absolute gem! We were warmly welcomed, check-in was a breeze and we were given a local insight (we think by the owner of the Lodge) into where to find the best street food and restaurants and brief history of the local area, all highlighted on the tourist map supplied He could not have been more helpful.
The Lodge is located right in the middle of historic George Town and surrounded by restaurants, street food vendors and cafe's. The famous George Town street art, Little India and the piers all close by and easy to find. Just wander the streets and you will discover something interesting at each turn.
Our visit coincided with the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, this added to the colour and vibrancy of our stay. We were honoured to be invited by the lodge to join them in a traditional Lunar New Year celebration which was a wonderful experience.
Courtesy tea and cakes were delivered to our room without any requests being made from us.
The Lodge is located in the heart of George Town and a result the building is very old, but in very good condition, being renovated but still retaining old world charm. Due to the age, the rooms are (by modern standard) small but are very comfortable and decorated in an endearing older style.
We could not fault our stay here at Betel Nut Lodge and highly recommend.
Should we ever return to Penang we will definitely stay here. We liked everything.
- Tareq (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (8/5): Very good - It was wonderful to be included in the celebrations for Chinese New Year. The host is very welcoming and inclusive. The large shared table for guests in the cafe area is great as it's easy to engage with other travellers, particularly good for solo travellers. The location is great, very close to the centre where there's a lot going on. This is an old house in the heritage area so has those limitations and character which I understand.
The breakfast 'option' was only toast, which I don't eat, although there were oranges to buy which I had. An option to have eggs would be better.
- Donkeytravel (7/5): Good -
- Azian (10/5): The best stay in George Town - This is the best hotel I have stayed in Penang. This is an authentic heritage place over a hundred years old. The rooms are not big but comfortable, quiet, clean and has fast wi fi. The crew here are friendly and there is a cosy cafe on the ground floor and i had a great cappuccino , cakes there . The location of this small hotel is fantastic, right in the middle of George Town close to all famous street food and attractions. Highly recommended and I will be back for another stay soon! Nothing
- Mohamed (9/5): Superb -
- Vaisakh (8/5): Good Experience, Heritage Feel.. Room suited for couples. - The rooms were very clean. Staff were cordial and gave a lot of inputs. Good Cafe and great coffee... The location of this property is very close to the food streets and street art places.. There was a confusion in the check out time. As per booking.com the check out time was till 16th Sept 23.59, but as per the hotel check out has to be done by 12 noon. But the good part was that they gave facility to keep luggage and provided a good clean bathroom and shower area to fresh up before leaving.
- Sander (10/5): Exceptional - The hospitality and the bed Nothing
- Mei (10/5): Tastefully decorated, clean, comfortable bed, everything worked. It was perfect! - Tastefully decorated, clean, comfortable bed, everything worked. It was perfect! Nothing
- Mohamed (9/5): Superb - I left my passport and staff was very kind and helpful.
- Gulce (9/5): Superb - Super helpful staff and great location!
- Matt (9/5): Superb - Really helpful staff. Great location in a quieter street. Bonus afternoon tea and cake/biscuit really appreciated after sightseeing in the heat and humidity. Loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to rebook should we return to Georgetown. Our room, though small, was cosy and comfortable. Nothing.
- Klara (8/5): Charming historical hotel in the city center - Located in a beautiful historical building in the center of the city next to great restaurants
- Patti (9/5): Unique colonial experience. Not 5 star but super cute. - Very quiet. Great location. Staff so kind. Room very small but only for sleep.
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional - A delightful hotel, close to wonderful street food markets. Welcoming host and very attentive staff. As it was in the heart of Georgetown access to tourist attractions was very easy. An awesome stay.
- Adya (10/5): Very comfortable, convenient stay. - Kamlesh and another gentleman who usually worked nights, were pleasant and courteous. I spoke the language so it turned out a plus for me. The coffee machine could have been ready earlier since most tourists would probably like to get out early to beat the heat and caffeine during the day would help. In the room there is a hot water kettle with milk tea available though. So for coffee drinkers we should carry our own coffee.
- Noor (9/5): Lovely hotel with a great location. - The very authentic olde worlde touches, a lot of thought has gone into it. It would be nice to be able to have breakfast as there is a cafe downstairs.
- Herbert (9/5): Home away from home - Excellent location. Very clean and comfortable. Staff were very attentive, kind and friendly. Complimentary cup of tea and cake each afternoon was very welcome and a lovely gesture. The hotel began to feel like home after a few days; we stayed five nights. It would be helpful to foreign tourists if the desk staff had a little more English. This would be good for the business of the hotel.
- Karen (10/5): A small, but super hotel, very conveniently located - I liked everything about this 'lodge'. The manager/owner, Cheah (sp?) was very helpful to give me a little history lesson and info on where to go and what to do that wasn't in the guide books. I was given a Markers map of the city with a full handwritten listing of where to go for specialty/great food! Enjoyed several of their choices!
The room was relatively small, but clean and easy to move around. The space behind the reception desk was especially nice - for chatting/discussing, relaxing a bit. Lovely carrot cake too!
It was delightful to have a lemongrass tea with a little 'treat' each evening, delivered to my door!
- Mark (9/5): Very Nice - Great location with very helpfull staff.
- Oceane (9/5): Charming hotel - Charming hotel, well located in Georgetown center. The room has wonderful bedding. They provide a map with the different restaurants and points of interest. A bit pricy.
- Anne-marie (10/5): A very enjoyable trip to Georgetown was enhanced further by our stay at Betel Nut Lodge - Breakfast was not included in our package so I cannot comment on the breakfast but we did avail of tea and toast in the cafe attached to Betel Nut Lodge on the morning we arrived. The accommodation is in a lovely quiet street in the heart of historical Georgetown. The staff are extremely helpful recommending good restaurants and giving information re public transportation. Our room was very comfortable. Beds were solid and very comfy and there were 2 forms of air conditioning in the room - a ceiling fan and an air conditioning unit. Accommodation is located in a recently refurbished Chinese house and is furnished accordingly with very interesting and old furnishings. A very pleasant and relaxing stay all round 😀 I can’t think of anything really!
- Eduardo (8/5): Very good -
- Chaffaa (9/5): Superb - Charming boutique hotel, with very clean rooms.
The hotel owner and staff are excellent. The owner gives a good insight and advice for Penang sightings and eateries.
Value for money.
- Azian (10/5): Best small hotel in George town - I have stayed at this small hotel many times before whenever I visit Penang. They were closed for refurbishment for a while so I was pleased to find that they have re-opened on my current trip to Penang. Everything I like about this small hotel is still there- quiet and clean rooms, friendly crew and a fantastic location in the middle of George Town, close to street art, food. The room is not big but it is comfy and as a traveler it's has everything and adequate. I was a bit worried after reading review about WiFi.But, I neednt have worried as the rooms have TV with streaming movies( free !) and Wi Fi is very fast, one of the best! Highly recommended! No
- Michihei (8/5): Very good -
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional - Great place, great staff, knowledgeable and helpful manager. Would definitely recommend.
- Jolanta (8/5): Very good - Very clean - even your shoes have to be left at the entrance to the lobby. The room very small but with some cosy atmosphere. Very good location to explore the city. Air conditioner was blowing directly into the face while sleeping.
- Su (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rizza (8/5): Very good - The owner is a very nice person, also the people working there.
- Anthony (9/5): Great guest house. Lovely staff and perfect location . - Clean simple rooms. Great location. Super friendly and helpful staff
- Julia (10/5): Super host - Great location, super clean and very nice and helpful owner! Nothing
- Mei (9/5): Comfortable Room - Nice and clean room, friendly staff and easy to check in and check out Room a bit too small, air conditioner got some sound
- Mei (9/5): Superb - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Betel Nut Lodge. The owner went above and beyond, providing a personalized map and invaluable tips for savoring unique local cuisine—an experience often missed in conventional hotels. Nestled amidst the vibrant UNESCO tourist hub, the lodge offers a peaceful escape. Our room, though compact, was impeccably clean, featuring a tidy bathroom, free access to Netflix . A delightful touch was the welcome tea accompanied by delectable local pastry. The comfortable four-poster bed, adorned with a screen curtain, added to the charm of the vintage setting throughout the lodge. The location is a significant advantage, granting easy access to key tourist attractions within walking distance. The only minor inconveniences were a stuck wardrobe sliding door and the scent of aged wood in the 100-year-old building.
- Witida (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful building in the heart of George Town. The room is small but clean and comfortable. Warm interiors. The staff were friendly and polite. They gave us a map with suggestion where we should eat. Every time we came back in the afternoon they gave us tea and some snacks. The check-out time is 12:00 p.m. but they let us leave our luggage in the building on our last day and we could pick them up late in the afternoon on our way to the airport. Highly recommend. Nothing.
- Stephanie (10/5): Very friendly and helpful owner. Convenient location. Clean. Would come back! - Very friendly and helpful owner. Convenient location. Clean.
- Karen (9/5): Superb - strategic location as the lodge is in the middle of tourist attractions, places to eat, etc. upon arrival staff was friendly, check in was smooth and we met the lodge owner who provided some grest info on where to eat and visit. Overall, a great place to stay.
- Martina (8/5): Very good - They give you a welcome drink and snack, so you can get a taste of the local food.
- Sze (10/5): They have very helpful, kind and friendly staff/ they attended to all our requests & needs/ fresh flowers da - Friendly staff, cleanings & comfortable room Room space is too small but is ok for just sleep in the night
- Pei (10/5): Recommended, great location, good staffs with daily special drink with local Nyonya kuih - Staffs extremely friendly and helpful. Service up to 5star hotel level. Recommended Shower pressure bit low. Water heater not hot enough. Other than that everything was prefect
- Giulia (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (9/5): I recommend that you should come and stay at Penang 👍🏻 - This hotel is near attractions , you can walk around
- Soodong (10/5): Amazing stay in Penang :) - The manager was attentive and recommending me to amazing local places (to eat, to have a cup of coffee and etc...). Daily provided kuih was also so lovely :) Water pressure in the bathroom, if i have to pick one!
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Maadhin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Renzo (9/5): I had a very pleasant stay in this charming guest house - The location is great, the house is full of character and the staff are very friendly Nothing
- Tiago (8/5): Very good - Great location, just outside the touristic area (walking distance). Very friendly staff. The room was small, with window to the interior pateo. Notheless it was confortable and quiet.
- Jenine (10/5): Exceptional - Attention to detail, the linen was good quality , the hotel was spotless, owner was especially lovely. Nothing
- Daniel (8/5): Very good - Good location in the heritage zone, nice eateries close by. Unexpected treat of tea and a sweet treat on return to the hotel. Not much natural light in the room. Bathroom was quite small with no separation with the shower so the whole bathroom is soaked after a shower
- Yvette (8/5): Very good - It was a wonderful and nostalgic experience staying at Betel Nut Lodge. I wanted to stay in a heritage hotel/ building, and that's what I got. Thank you to the two Staff there for taking care of me during my visit. The water pressure from the Shower head was very low, therefore taking a shower was a slightly frustrating experience.
- Kenny (8/5): Very good -
- Madged (10/5): Where Hospitality Transcends Expectations - In a sea of hotels, this charming shophouse stands apart. Nestled away from the hustle and bustle, it offers a tranquil retreat that instantly brings a smile to your face. From the delightful tea time treats delivered to your door to Cheah's impeccable recommendations, every moment is infused with warmth and care.
The ground floor courtyard provides a peaceful oasis where you can unwind, rest, or engage in delightful conversations with fellow guests. It's not just a hotel; it's a place that feels like a welcoming home away from home. The attention to detail and genuine hospitality create an atmosphere that invites you to return time and time again.
Betel Nut Lodge offers more than just comfortable accommodations; it offers an experience that lingers in your heart. Whether you seek solace from the outside world or crave connections with like-minded travellers, this haven provides the perfect balance and surprise yourself with local food literally at your door step. All good
- Sophie (10/5): Wonderful Stay, Great Hospitality. - The manager was incredible, a fantastic host, very welcoming. He provided great information on restaurants and events. Please follow his recommendations, you won't regret it! The staff was great, so helpful.
The hotel has a boutique character charm to it, and is situated at an excellent location, walking distance to food night markets, nice restaurants, museums and more.
My room was comfortable and clean. Everyday, it was nice coming back to my room after a long day of sightseeing and finding fresh cut flowers and receiving a complimentary hot tea with a treat. Magnifique!
I highly recommend Betel Nut Lodge, and will definitely come back when I'm in George Town. Nothing, Nothing!
- Gavin (8/5): Great, my room was spotless, the WiFi worked well and the team were very helpful. - Everything was great , especially the hot bread served on arrival with tea even though it was late at night.
The neighbourhood is really cool , a mix of cool coffee shops, local food and fruit vendors and old style buildings.
Georgetown is great to explore on foot. There were some ants running around the reception desk, when I arrived.
- James (6/5): Pleasant - Location was near some good eating places. Owner was friendly and even treat us to dessert n tea. My room was very cramp and bed was too small. A/C and fan was noisy. Most staff can't seems to understand English or malay. All together it was not really value for money
- Sarah (9/5): lovely stay would recommend - nice bathroom
great location
lovely staff
tea and cake offered, lovely touch
very clean accommodation air con could have worked better
room a little small but old building so to be expected
- Azian (10/5): The Best small hotel in George Town - I go to Penang regularly and often like to stay in small independent hotels . This is by far the best place in George Town . The people are friendly and the place is very clean and cosy in this 150 year old heritage building. I was initially worried reading some comments of heritage hotels but I needn't be as this small hotel is well maintained. The owner explained that they have refurbished the hotel according to legal requirements and the walls are made of lime plaster and not cement- hence the flaky appearance. I will be back and stay at Betel Nut Lodge again soon. I love the place
- Azizah (10/5): Overall our stays were excellent. - Service, hospitality and location are excellent. Praise goes to Mr Chia for passionate in his work and attentive to client's need. Attend to client conscientiously and professionally. The complementary ginger tea was excellent. His staff are polite and very helpful. Can improve in the linen cleanliness - slight smell from one of the pillow cover. The second day cleanliness of bathroom and fresh roses in bathroom and cleanliness of the room were excellent. Need to follow up on Housekeeping quality of work. Can further orientate/checking/follow up in the functioning of the room TV.
- Aleksandr (1/5): Bad - Location is fine Very bad,I couldn't call this place as hotel, not correspond to photos, totally different, walls are in total fungus, especially in reception area,in room too, furniture and decorations very old and ugly 😨.No parking as described.
- Kelly (10/5): Charming and cheerful! - charming heritage hotel with character. the location is great for exploring Georgetown too. Mr Cheah and his staff certainly went above and beyond to provide great hospitality, including making us late night snacks and tea, pointing out areas of interests and also giving food and transportation tips! nothing!
- Aswin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Francis (10/5): The owner is very helpful n warm hospitality. Will recommend this lodge to our friends - No breakfast served. Location very convenient No comment
- Helen (9/5): Superb - We loved our stay here. Great location, quiet but also in the centre of things. The guest house is charming and characterful. The room was pretty small but beautiful, with everything we needed. Staff were so friendly and attentive. We were given a very useful map with things to see and places to eat. We were also brought tea and fresh pastries in the afternoon, this was a lovely bonus! The room was small, but this is an old building so so to be expected.
- Miho (10/5): Lovely little heritage house in the heart of George Town - Well-maintained heritage house in the middle of all the best places to eat in George Town! The real asset of Betel Nut Lodge though is the owner himself who told us wonderful stories of George Town, of turning his teenage dream of running a hotel a reality and who was also kind enough to prepare a map of all the must eats in George Town. Hands down would definitely, definitely stay here again the next time we come for a visit! -
- Gonzalo (10/5): Great boutique hotel with super friendly owner - This is a great place from where to get to know Georgetown/Penang. Small boutique hotel. One of the nicest places we’ve stayed in SEA. The owner is super helpful, gives you all the restaurant recommendations (try all of them), the room is very clean and cosy. would really recommend this place!
the best is the afternoon tea/cake that they bring you to the room. thank you very much
- Hong (8/5): Staying with heritage - Staying in a hotel with history, love the welcome tea and snack and got to know they have morning meeting sessions in common area with guests. Be back next time for the session 😜 Pillows were too soft to my liking, couple of mosquitoes managed to slipinto room
- Lo (10/5): amazing ! - it’s cozy and clean, your feet won’t get dirty even walking around barefoot in the hotel .
You will get different kind of fresh flower everyday. none
