Guest Reviews
- Beth (10/5): - Great meal options, lovely old rooms and verandah.
- Matthew (10/5): - Old school charm
- Karen (10/5): - Beautiful room with spa and balcony overlooking the main street.
- Gemma (8/5): - Lovely spot. Great rooms, food and very pleasant staff
- Trudy (10/5): - Beautiful place with amazing decor and the staff were so lovely. The restaurant was excellent for food and drinks. 10/10 for this place.
- Paul (8/5): - Loved the old world atmosphere.
- Sarah (10/5): Central and comfy! - We had a great stay, accommodation even better than i had expected! Central to everything in broken hill, great cocktails in the bar, breakast was wonderful too!
- Allen (8/5): - The room was large and very comfortable room, while a little dated in places. The room opened out onto a wide veranda that was shared by other rooms. The balcony had a few tables and chairs that I suspect hadn't been cleaned for a while as there were buckets of empty drink bottles. The staff were really friendly. Easy to reach the centre of town as it is on the main street
- Garry (10/5): - Staff were really friendly and helpful and our room (4) even had a spa tub (much appreciated after a hard day!)
- Daniel (8/5): - Great staff great meals
- Bernadette (8/5): - Was a nice big room with a great spa bath
- eric (8/5): Grey nomads - Staff were amazing
Room was huge and opened to the balcony
Meals good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Food was wonderful. Service outstanding rooms good.
- Greg (4/5): - Toilet was leaking water from the cistern when we flushed. Water was pouring onto the bathroom floor so we couldn’t really use it. No internet not that I care but my teenage daughters did.
- Leeanne (8/5): - This was a beautiful property offering a lovely room that was well presented & spacious with access to the balcony. It was rather disappointing that the restaurant & bar were also closed during the duration of our stay - these are features that sway a booking, so it seemed a little deceptive. However overall we had a very enjoyable stay.
- Sam (10/5): - I come here regularly for work and it's always a nice stay. Clean and spacious rooms with friendly staff.
They also went above and beyond for me as I had to leave a night early due to a family emergency and they will credit me a night for my next stay.
Would highly recommend if staying in Broken Hill.
- Peter (10/5): - I have never felt so welcome. The staff, indeed all of Broken Hill, are so friendly and helpful.
I am 83 and pleased to have made the effort.
- Eugene (10/5): - Very large, comfortable room. Fast wifi, and Foxtel.
- Michelle (8/5): - The staff were super friendly and helpful. Bed was comfy and the room was spacious and had everything I needed. Bathroom was a bit old and tired with damaged floor of shower (glad I had my thongs). Have stayed there before and would definitely stay there again. It's a bit noisy so you'll need ear plugs to sleep.
- Maria (10/5): - great food as well
- Peter John (8/5): - Hotel was clean and room was generally very good.
The lack of lift to upper floor (all rooms) was a challenge for my wife. Also the lack of hand rail at the top of stairs meant that she needed assistance to complete stair climb.
Also, the dining room was advertised as being open for dinner on 7 nights per week - in fact it was not open on Sunday night requiring us to find an alternative venue for dinner on that night at short notice.
- John McIntosh (10/5): - Perfect location with excellent resturant.
- Robyn (10/5): - Enjoyed our 3 night stay. Convenient location. Restaurant and coffee cafe were excellent.
- Kim (8/5): - The house keeping staff were lovely and helpful. Although we didn’t go there to watch TV the TV was very small and the first room didn’t work at all . The staff were very happy to move us and accommodate our needs however. It is a lovely place but very noisy if you are in the balcony rooms.
- paula (10/5): - We had a fabulous time at this home away from home. The staff were all delightful and very helpful. Lovely large rooms right in the centre of town. Highly recommended
- Trent (6/5): - The Foxtel wasnt working on the last night
- Daryl (10/5): - Everything was 1st Class, particularly the staff & the restaurant
- Linda (10/5): - Absolutely stunning, far exceeded my expectations for a country pub!
- Rob (10/5): - Perfectly located, with friendly staff and good food, it was a delight to stay at.
- Danny (10/5): - Na
- Christine (2/5): - Didn’t get the accommodation booked, “cottage” was barely fit for habitation, no reduction in rate offered or given after complaint. Restaurant a shambles, food being brought in from adjoining pizza shop and cafe.
- Joanne (10/5): - Loved the beautiful old building but with all.mod cons.
Staff friendly, food great in cafe.
Disappointed restaurant was not open on the Monday night.
- Robert (10/5): - Thoughtfully renovated classic property. Rooms are tastefully updated with modern amenities. The property is struggling with difficultly in securing and retaining staff.
- Karen (10/5): - Lovely historic property with welcoming staff and a lovely feel. Restaurant meal was great. Planned to go back on our last night but nowhere did it say everything was closed on Sunday evening.
- Nicole (8/5): - We stayed at the Family Cottage - convenient location (easy drive to all Broken Hill has to offer), great facilities, reasonable rates and everything that might be needed for the duration of a stay is provided. The exhaust fan in the bathroom does need to be replaced or repaired as it is quite noisy and the oven needs a good clean but otherwise everything is spot on. Thank you for the great hospitality!
- Mark (8/5): - The Astra is a great place to stay or to have a meal or a drink
- Angela (6/5): Broken Hill weekend - The hotel is in a fantastic location with restaurants below. Unfortunately Covid has affected Broken Hill and there was almost no service. Our rooms were not cleaned. Towels were left sitting on a coffe table outside rooms for the length of our stay and rubbish was left on the upstairs balcony. We were not told there was no service. The bar manager let us know he was understaffed and he was exceptional in his service. He seemed to be doing most of the work in the bar, helping reception and in the restaurant by himself.
- Moira (10/5): - Cute cottage in a good location. Very clean and well equipped for a family stay. Would definitely stay here again in Broken Hill!
- Cynthia (4/5): - We arrived and the pub was completely locked and closed. Fortunately there were two employees outside waiting for a lift who assisted us. Would have been nice to know that before we arrived. I booked in a pub because of the convenience of having food/drink etc right there but that was a waste of time. Not a bad stay but annoyed it was all locked up, no use staying in a pub.
- Wayne (8/5): - I stay here everytime I go to Broken Hill, am there every 3 months or so, Rooms are clean and comfy, restaurant and bar under one roof.
- Richard (10/5): - Stayed at the Chapple St cottage - great accommodation for the two of us. Could cope with 2 couples but might get a bit squishy sharing single bathroom. 2 adults 2 kids easy as well. Cute and secure cottage a bit far for walk to town - but easy drive - and distance kept it quiet each night. Comfortable rooms and furnishings and off street parking.
- Richard (10/5): - great
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great old country pub with friendly efficient staff. Great experience
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Location
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location was great.
The staff were excellent
The food was very good
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location was fantastic. Central and walkable to the main street and eateries. The hotel has its own restaurant, bar and cafe, so all this was very convenient.
The onsite parking was very limited, but there was plenty of on-street available while we were there.
Unfortunately, there was a balcony party at an opposing hotel on Saturday night that was VERY loud. I would hope they no longer allow their speakers to face the street or should remain inside their venue in the future?
- Stephen (8/5): - Nice room, pleasant staff, restaurant, cafe and bar all available onsite.
- Richard (8/5): Old style accommodation. - Just some issues with cleanliness in the bathroom. Some solved after we mentioned them, one was not. Generally a good place to stay. Middle of town, good restaurant. Issues with confirmation with ongoing bookings.
- Stephen (8/5): Lovely room - Lovely old style room with a seperate bathroom and walk in robe
- Phil&Flick (10/5): - It is an old property being refurbished in some downstairs dining rooms.
The upstairs accommodation rooms were spacious with high ceilings.
The outside verandah was an ideal spot for an evening drink.
- Michelle (8/5): Great spot - Great Location, great food in the bar and cafe underneath. Recommend for business or leisure
- Sue (10/5): - The staff and service were friendly and helpful at all times. Nothing was too much trouble. Room was spacious and bathroom was new.
We had access to the wide verandah from our room and it was great to step out and look into the distance and take in the glorious sunsets. Café and restaurant attached to the hotel had very good range of food and beverages reasonably priced and delicious. I loved the fine bone china for tea... Again, the service was excellent.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Expensive and disappointing - The hotel is very conveniently located. Clean. But our room (#5) had locked stained glass windows. That means we couldn’t open them to refresh the room (in times of covid this is essential) not even see outside as the windows had colored corrugated glass. I think the hotel should asvise about this condition at the time of booking. Also, foxtel didn’t work, not sure if it was temporary but if they have stopped having it, they should remove the device and all information related to it from the room.
- Stewart (8/5): - After a few small issues at checkin, which they did their best to quickly resolve, we enjoyed staying in the cottage. It is an older style house with new carpet, and a good bathroom and kitchen. Walls etc have some marks and damage so it may not be for everyone though.
In general though it was great value to have your own house, with a proper lounge room and separate room for the kids to sleep in why you relax.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean & Reliable - Comfortable bush hotel. Decent food and coffee at Soul downstairs (hotel cafe under renovation). Some street noise penetrates the old door/window frames. Clean and tidy. Friendly, easy going staff. Well located. Easy Street parking.
- Andrew (10/5): - staff very friendly and helpful.
food excellent, especially dinner but also breakfast and lunch.
large room, a little creaky due to building age but great light and character
- mick (8/5): - old fashioned high ceilings, really good food, large suite.
- Robert (4/5): - Renovation in progress, for the price and the picture posted on Wotif as a deluxe room We thought it would be good but it was old dirty worn out carpet and you could not sit on the toilet probably because it was up against the bath
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Dinner was great.
Room was a ittle bit tired.
Overall first impression was geat.
- Julianne (2/5): Poor service - We booked the 2 room apartment and they said it wasnt available so we were placed in a small hotel room with a sofa bed. Not really suitable for a family.
- Sally (10/5): Old fashioned grand hotel - We really enjoyed our stay at the Astra Our room was very large with lots of space and two chairs to sit in with a table for drinks/nibbles. There was a a desk to do work Bed comfortable. It was obviously quite a grand hotel in its day, and whilst is no longer 5 star, there is still a feel of the grandness and it doesn't feel like any other hotel ie it h as unique character. Lovely wide stairs and hallways. Staff were very helpful and friendly In a good location unman street, so close to shops and other bars restaurants. We ate in the restaurant and had a lovely meal.Would highly recommend if you want to stay in a character hotel, rather than a more sterile modern hotel Has a nice big bathroom and a walk in robe
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The accommodation whilst on a busy street is quite peaceful, large open rooms and easy access to multiple dining options available all day in the same building and suave pub downstairs with plenty of nice seating options. Short walk to art galleries and services. Easy to find parking. All staff were lovely and helpful no matter what time of day. Check-in super easy and they do a charge back system for the eating options and pub.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Hotel clean. Spa bath did not work. No off street parking was available. Staff were not cooperative.
- Em (10/5): - Enjoyed our short stay in our executive room. Management went out of their way to accommodate us after we had a couple of problems with their cottage. Enjoyed the food, would recommend the executive room at the Astra Hotel.
- Doug (4/5): - I booked for 3 beds and only got 2, accommodation was 5 kms from the hotel and had to get taxis, overall not a good experience
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice old style hotel.. food was excellent and room clean and tidy.
Breakfast staff still asleep at 8.00am
- Charlotte (8/5): Old style centre of town - The hotel is a lovely building with verandahs. We stayed on a Saturday night when it was very busy and noisy downstairs. Our room was above the bar area and was very noisy. So I wouldn't recommend this if you wanted a quiet night. The room was beautifully appointed with everything you need.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely place to stay in the middle of the town within easy walking distance of lots of places to see and things to do.
- Wendy (6/5): - Nice hotel but parking difficult for the cost i thought breakfast would be included also there were no lifts
- Verified traveler (10/5): - In the middle of the town and could walk to a lot of sights of interest and places to visit. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The meals were amazing and we had to walk each day to walk off what we ate. Excellent place to stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A good hotel but inconvenient for parking and moving luggage .Great food and helpful staff. Wellsituated in town
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The restaurant food was amazing one of the best steaks i’ve Had
- Anna (8/5): Huge Room! - Lovely heritage room (Number 1) which was HUGE! Large spa and bathroom, comfy bed, walk in wardrobe, small couch, 2 seater table with a door to a large shared balcony. Great food downstairs (a bit on the pricey side but they offer a 10% discount to guests). The only complaint we had was the water pressure in the shower. It was dismal at best. Would stay again.
- Rowan (10/5): - I was very happy to stay there, it was very comfortable
- Verified traveler (6/5): Better than ok - Big room. Bit rundown. Comfortable nonetheless. Lovely staff.
- Lynda (10/5): Highly Recommended - We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at the Astra which is centrally located in Broken Hill. We were given a lovely room with doors onto the balcony. The friendly staff helped us decide where to visit, including a drive to Silverton, the Mundi Mundi plans, the sculptures and the mining memorial. The evening meal in the hotel restaurant was superb.
- Shane (10/5): Stayed at the cottage not hotel - Unbelievable standard, the restaurant at the Astra is punching well above its weight range. It is terrific food and a top place to unwind. We stayed at the cottage which is an actual house just up the road. Fantastic and highly recommended.
- kim (6/5): the cottage @chapple st - needed alot of outside maintenance, it was just untidy. The front windows didnt lock properly. The carpet needs replacing. The sheets were pilling making sleep rather uncomfortable. Had trouble with the back door . You get what you pay for!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Reasonable accommodation & would stay again - Cottage is not on-site & staff from Astra phoned to confirm this was OK not long after online booking was made which was great. Wasn't clear signage at the hotel as to where check-in desk was located, buy very friendly staff. Cottage had good kitchen, but floor had only been roughly mopped & carpet wasn't overly clean. Great large comfortable couch in living room. Only a small area out the back to sit & relax no grass area & not very appealing, front is large but paved & not private. Under cover parking suitable for 2 vehicles but not that wide so would struggle with a vehicle wider than a sedan. School not far away so was a fair bit of noise at start & end of day school day with people regularly walking past. Not within easy walking distance of town. All in all was reasonable accommodation & I would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Warning, Astra cottage is not at the Astra Hotel. - We arrived late afternoon at Argent st at the centrally located hotel we booked. When we spoke to the clerk he seemed a little dismissive and quickly informed us that we were just picking up the keys from here and "you do know the place you are staying is not here dont you?" when i replied in the negative he said that that was common, but by way of proof showed me a sheet of paper he had printed out with the new address of our accommodation, chapple st, on the other side of town. Im not sure what he thought he proved by showing me a piece of paper that i assumedly was supposed to have read that was located 1200kms away from where i originally made the booking. When I enquired about any more rooms with twin beds I was dismissed saying not unless i wanted to spend hundreds more. There were many cheaper hotels in the area that would have satisfied our needs but due to the Astra hotel having a no refunds policy and having already paid in good faith, we felt stuck. I consider that this was effectively a bait and switch. To add to the injury the revised accommodation was a complete bombsite, with filthy unvacuumed floors , massive stains all over the chairs , broken appliances, the whole property was in desperate need of renovation, in short, the worst of regional accommodation. Not fit for guests to stay at. There is clearly serious management issues for properties like that to be offered in such a manner for paying guests.
