It was clean and comfortable and perfectly located to walk to most places we wanted to visit. For a Backpackers it was in great condition and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Free all day parking across the road.

Reading other reviews, though, I think it would be wise to adjust the description on Expedia to clearly reflect that it isn’t a ‘retreat’ by any stretch of the imagination. But I really liked it. Thank you for a clean warm place to rest.

Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff made this place a delight to visit. All are immensely helpful, also informative and responsive to any needs. Our private double room with ensuite bath was basic (as expected at a "backpacker") but spotlessly clean, and someone had installed an outlet strip to accommodate for the shortage of electrical outlets. Nice to have on-site laundry, 3 each for both washer and dryer. The common areas were comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked. It would be great if all the youth could figure out how to remove food from the sinks when they're done washing dishes, and maybe that's too much to expect.

Gwenwyfahr (2/5): - The double room with en suite that we booked had no external windows and no air conditioning so it was 35-40C which is ridiculous in New Zealand. There was a fan but we were told that we could not run it on high because the vibrations were too loud in the next room. There was hair in the bedding, and no parking available because the spaces were full of people sleeping in their cars so we had to park in a shopping carpark across the street. The room was tiny so we had to climb over our bags to get in and out of the room/bed/bathroom. The room was also right by the common room so it was very noisy. This place might be ok for drunk teenagers but it is 100% not appropriate for adults needing somewhere to sleep for the night.
Holly (6/5): - Room was basic which is all we needed but there was a sound from what seemed like a dryer going the whole night, we didn't get much sleep, we gave up trying by 6am. We had even turned off the air conditioning due to a different noise it made when the air-con was on, so we almost cooked ourselves, I had requested feedback from the hostel, still not heard anything after four days regarding the noise.
Robert (4/5): Wouldn't stay again - Stayed in a few hostels in New Zealand and this just didn't have the same vibe as other places. Other guests didn't seem to be considerate to others by slamming doors constantly, even at 3/4am in the morning. The room itself was clean to look at but there were signs it needed more than a once over.

I just loved the layout of the place, the way you stepped down into the common area. It was just a nices laid back, friendly vibe. The kitchen was nicely set up, the common area inviting. Thenrooms were very reasonable which allowed me to have my iwn room and bath. There was also small bar where I purchased a very nice NZ white wine at low cost.

The room (whilst very clean and warm) was like a shoebox - the room looked much bigger in the photos - we couldn't even get our luggage between the bed and the wall. We accept we maybe didn't read things properly - but if we had known/realised, we would never have booked in here.

Gary (6/5): Adequate but not not we would ordinarily use. - Booked this without realizing it was a backpackers. Having said that, it was not a bad place to stay. The room was small but entirely fine for an overnight stay. Staff were excellent, friendly and efficient. My wife and I are both over 60, so perhaps best suited to those younger. Would recommend to any young people traveling through Taupo.

Justine (8/5): Above Average Hostel Experience - We stayed in a private room with its own bath for two nights. It was my favorite hostel of our whole trip. The staff was very friendly, and their information on the area and Tongariro National Park was invaluable. The room was nice-- walls were a little thin, but that's to be expected. The best part about it was that it was enclosed in a separate wing, so it held some heat and wasn't exposed to the outside, which was GREAT in winter. And the heater worked non-stop (which was something we had trouble with elsewhere). There's no TV in the room, but they have a great collection of DVDs to work with. We had no trouble with the WIFI. The kitchen was spacious and comfortable to work in. We didn't get to try their chili dinner special, but it looked quite tasty. Their location was within walking distance of a supermarket, and shops. Overall, we had a very good experience.

Kristen (8/5): Would recommend! - The crowning points of this hostel were its location (central Taupo), its bar (CHEAP drinks), and its people. The staff were very helpful. The kitchen facilities were more than suffficient, and seemed pretty clean. Bathrooms were alright; the shower was nice but there was a bit of what seemed to be mold on the ceiling. The rooms were pretty alright, beds comfortable but creaky. Overall a pretty great experience!
couples (8/5): In the heart of shopping area - Room has no closet, no table just one small night stand, no tv Actually, they is room to put a closet! No shelf to put toiletries in the bathroom, No place to hang wet towels- someone put two hooks at the opposite sides of the room and tied a string across the room for hanging!!! Very barebones room-the price should be 1/3 - 1/2 less!!

Rebecca (6/5): Could have been better - The hostel itself is nice and has a homely feel. The staff members were great and gave us lots of great advice and tips for visiting the surrounding area. I'm sure had we stayed at any other time we would be rating this place higher, the only draw back we had was that a massive group of rugby players were staying in the dorm next door to our double room and it was very noisy. We could hear every word of conversation and an incredibly loud snorer in the night. By the end of our two night stay we were both shattered and had barely slept so we were glad to be moving on. A shame because the hostel is nice.

Reception staff were friendly enough, nice meal for only $5, adequate communal areas incl kitchen/bar area, tv room a bit small. Wife and I had double ensuite room located close to bar area which was a bit noisy, you get what you pay for I guess. No tv in room, bed was a bit hard, and toilet didn't flush properly.
