Guest Reviews
- May Lee (9/5): - Wonderful natural surroundings, rustic retreat but very comfortable, great alternative to a "modern" resort.
Staff were very friendly and attended to all our needs.
Room was well equipped, air-conditioning ,fan and insect netting around the beds very effective.
Bathroom/toilet/shower area..very good.
Common dining area conducive to enjoyable interaction with other guests.Freeflow of drinking water, coffee and tea most welcome.Shuttle service to Sepilok made for brilliant excursion experience.
A top stay allround, excellent value, highly recommended 👌 No complaints...the context of this operation is lower key, not 5 star...as such was just fine,we were well served in all departments.
- Jakub (10/5): -
- Kumar (10/5): - Warm , friendly and good vibes
- Isabella (8/5): - Great place! The bed is comfortable (accept you will be one with the jungle critters!), the outdoor bathroom is quite nice, food is great (the veggie fried noodles are the best!) and staff is very friendly. You are fully dependent on their shuttle and their schedule to go to the RDC, orangutang and sun bear. If you need to go somewhere else, there’s an extra cost. Grab or taxis don’t hang around there.
- Ruta (3/5): Ok for some one who's looking for a wilderness experience without any creature comforts or amenities -
- Spela (10/5): True jungle experience - We loved the experience of Paganakan Dii! It was very true to the jungle experience and the property matched the vibe. Our deluxe room was comfortable and the east facing view to the jungle was heavenly The AC was much appreciated. The staff was really kind and they made sure we had the best experience and that daily activities/shuttles and meals were well managed. They also arranged a night walk for us at RDC (one day in advance). Breakfast was free, but lunch and dinner also had some good and cbeap options, everything was tasty. You could see monkeys, squirrels and birds directly from your table. Only minor things to note - wifi only in the common areas. The location is pretty remote from all the activities in the area and free shuttle could be a bit more frequent (but they can also take you outside of set hours for an extra fee), room/meals can be paid by card everything else is cash only. Breakfast could have more options besides the two vegan ones.
- Ruta (3/5): - The hotel was kind enuf to allow us to cancel without charges.
Location is nearby to sepilok orangutans etc
Located inside forest There are no facilities
The bathroom is open air with bees, insects coming from the forest. Esp at night its scary abd uncomfortable to use rhe toilet or bathing aream rough black tarpaulin is hung from the ceiling.
The lighting is poor everywhere, even in the room
There s no wifi in the rooms
There is no kettle or tea kit
No drinking water provided until we asked for it
No glasses or cups in the room
No way to contact reception, no intercom
Rooms are a massive climb and very far from reception
No table or furniture for bags
No mirrors
Toiletries are too basic in big black bottles on the dressing table
No room service
There was no staff to take the bags for almost 30 mins when we had arrived aftwr a 12 hours journey. Had to wait almost 30 mins for water and bags
- Miranda Luiken (9/5): Prachtige authentieke locatie.
- Kaja Yun (9/5): Flott natur og fine bungalows - Nydelig beliggende, midt i regnskogen
- Olga (10/5): Amazing Jungle Stay - Staying here is a truly special experience - you are in the heart of the jungle. The staff was incredibly friendly and kind. The food is wonderful. It's far from the centers, but the shuttle makes transport easy. There were only 2-3 other girls in my dorm (the rooms are huge), so there was a lot of privacy. There's no AC, but it's cool at night so this wasn't a problem. The mosquito net was great and sleeping to the sounds of the jungle is just magical! Nothing, everything was great!
- Anna (7/5): Secluded and peaceful - Really really lovely staff. Very welcoming, polite, and helpful. Beautiful location amongst the rainforest. Shuttles to the airport/sepilok/orangutan sanctuary. Laundry services, nice food and drinks menu. When I got ill during my stay, they called a taxi immediately to take me to the hospital. The dorm beds themselves were comfy. It didn’t get cool enough in the nighttime to sleep comfortably. Just be aware if you sleep in the dorm rooms they only have ceiling fans which don’t really blow air at the beds. I found I could only sleep if I put the mosquito net up to get more airflow. it’s rustic accommodation in the rainforest so don’t expect anything 5 star. Not all showers had good water pressure
- Biek (4/5): Not worth the price – very worn down and uncomfortable stay - The setting itself is nice, with a pretty view from the balcony, and the shuttle service to nearby orangutan and sun bear centres is convenient. The staff were polite, and the food was decent with generous portions. We stayed at Paganakan Tropical Retreat and ended up leaving one night early due to the overall condition of the property.
However, the resort is in a very worn-down state and does not reflect the price charged (around SGD 133/MYR 450 per night). The room never became comfortable during the day, which made it difficult for our children to rest. The mosquito nets were too short and had holes, offering little protection. The outdoor bathroom had multiple leaks, and parts of the structure—like the balcony wood—felt unstable.
Basic amenities were also lacking: no WiFi in the room, no fridge, no drinking water, no storage space, and not even umbrellas available. Access to the rooms was inconvenient, requiring us to carry luggage over uneven terrain without assistance.
We understand that accommodation in this area can be more simple, but this felt below even a reasonable baseline. For the price, this was disappointing and not good value. We would not recommend staying here, especially for families.
- Sara Louise (8/5): Beautiful scenic but basic stay. Lovely views wonderful staff - Amazing views. Calm and quiet. Water tea and coffee always available. Fabulous staff. Shuttle to sanctuary and discovery centre. Had mosquito net, a/c and fan. Also hot shower. ‘Scenic shower’- open to the forest. ! Lots of gaps under/between doors, so a/c not super efficient. But it was enough. Grab wouldn’t always come out/drop off this far. (Reception helped with ordering a taxi) No alternative places to eat. (Food got a bit samey for 3 nights)
- Millie (5/5): Very expensive - better places to stay in Sepilok for same price - The staff were really friendly and very helpful The hotel is very expensive for what it is, with very limited facilities and a very basic room
- Sue (8/5): Very interesting. Food good and reasonably priced lovely staff - Location
Wildlife
Staff were lovely The verandah at the back was looking dangerous. Lack of comfortable seating at front Perhaps a small table and chairs would be more suitable to be able to sit out.
- Federica (9/5): -
- Chiara (9/5): -
- Nadja Pi (10/5): - The chalets were great and the staff super friendly! :)
- Clara (8/5): -
- Max (10/5): Perfect rainforest stay - It's in a rainforest, so yes, there will be bugs, animals and it's not perfectly clean. If you can accept this, it's a perfect stay. Some of the reviews saying it's too dirty.. go to a luxury resort and you'll find what you need.
- Pdppal (8/5): -
- Amy (10/5): Lovely escape into nature - Wonderful staff who do their best for their guests, comfortable well ventilated dorm rooms which allow you to fall asleep to the sounds of nature, delicious food.
- Kearney (7/5): -
- Lucie (9/5): -
- Martin (9/5): Veldig hyggelig og fredelig sted - God mat, fine og rene hytter. Nydelig område. Gode områder for avslapping, fin utsikt. God hjelp med aktiviteter. Ikke noe luksusopphold, men ingenting å klage over. Litt kjip lukt på rommet.
- Nicole (10/5): - The environment, in the jungle, semi open rooms to the outdoors.
Warm showers, food and transport readily available, closeness to the sanctuaries.
A lovely, friendly, helpful team.
And brilliant common spaces, hammocks for relaxing. I'm probably returning just to hang out!
- Tomasz (10/5): - Amaizing place, amaizing room with jungle view, very friendly personel, and amaizig food...10 for everything.
- KarinEppich (9/5): - Personal sehr nett und bemüht, Location super cute.
- Bruno (10/5): - The place was truly magical, the staff was kind, welcoming and very helpful suggesting activities and providing every service we needed. The location in the middle of the jungle was a unique and unforgettable experience. It was simple but with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We’ll never forget it! Nothing
- Carole (8/5): -
- Mélina (9/5): - The staff was adorable, breakfast good, excursions were nice !!!!
The room is simple but authentic
- Aylin (1/5): Well overpriced for ill maintained shacks - The staff were super friendly. It’s massively overpriced for what you get. I’ve travelled 40+ countries and plenty of basic accommodations. But there’s basic and then there’s run down and poorly managed/maintained. The price is by no means justified for the state of things and services provided. From ill fitted mosquito nets, over rotting wood structures and dirty rooms, it’s simply a bad experience - especially given the price point. We intended to spend 6 nights but left after the second night. Plenty of options with better value for money around.
- Roosa (10/5): -
- Aleksandra (8/5): Worth Visiting Despite the Basic Conditions - Very friendly and helpful staff who make you feel welcome from the very beginning. The food served on-site is delicious and reasonably priced. A big highlight is the unique atmosphere of the place and the stunning jungle view from the balcony – truly impressive. Another great advantage is the free shuttle bus to the orangutan center, which is very convenient for guests. The stay was pleasant overall, but the conditions are quite basic. Because of that, we feel the price is a bit too high for the standard offered.
- Sally (8/5): -
- Jessica (9/5): An amazing stay here, lovely staff, great location. You get to see so much wild life. They offer a free shuttle service - Amazing location, in the heart of the jungle with great views and great location with a free shuttle service to and from the sanctuary’s. The mosquito nets had holes in so could be updated. There could have been more of a variety on the breakfast menus.
- Emily (10/5): - Perfect location! Very friendly staff and delicious food (veggie noodles are a must!). Shuttle to the orangutan’s is perfect and the retreat is very relaxing! Toilets sometimes had no toilet paper.
- Amanda (10/5): Loved it - Clean spacious room, air con & ceiling fan, nice little balcony, great food - super friendly staff The walk to the lodge could be a little slippy when wet with leaves especially when carrying luggage.
- Matilde (7/5): -
- allyson (7/5): -
- Caroline (9/5): Perfect location to explore Sepilok. Comfortable beds and hammocks for relaxing in. -
- patricia (10/5): Peaceful rooms set amongst the forest - The rooms overlooked the forest. It was wonderful to slide the wall back to look out across the trees. The bathroom was also open to the forest. It was great showering with a beautiful view. All the staff were helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay there again.
- Hanna (9/5): - Staff were truly incredible. Very kind, very accommodating and very attentive and looked after all the guests. Meals were delicious and just a truly fabulous place to spend some time
- Nadine (9/5): -
- Nurul Hadjar (8/5): We will be coming back to Paganakan Dii - Overall, we had a splendid stay in Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat. We took a package with breakfast. The food was decent and simple one. Taste decent which we can enjoy the food. We love the lush flora and fauna surrounding the resort. The staff giving us a warm hospitality which make us feels like home and we will return back to stay on Paganakan Dii. We rate 80% out of 100% of pleasant experience in Paganakan Dii. Things to improve are: they could enhance the interior design in the room so that it is at par with the room rate we pay. Food wise can be improved in terms of selection, especially for breakfast.
- Sebastiano (10/5): -
- Petra (10/5): Amazing in heart of the jungle! - Everything! It was amazing! The location is the best! In the heart of jungle but still so comfy in amazing little houses, hot water, aircondation, lovely super helpful staff, delicious food, shuttle bus for free,…thank you soo much! We loved it! Everything was perfect
- Craig (8/5): Rustic cabin on stilts with A/C - Loved, the whole “treehouse “ vibe, it was a lovely experience to be so surrounded by the jungle. It felt authentic but comfy. The restaurant had fabulous views of the jungle, we ate breakfast and dinner just watching for the different jungle life. Breakfast we were always entertained by the squirrels. We would have preferred a window in the cabin overlooking the jungle, there aren’t any, it’s just wooden sliding doors. The breakfast of 2 slices of sweet toast with a boiled egg, would be better replaced with just toast and jam or scrambled eggs or just fruit.
Il bagno è all’aperto, fa parte dell’esperienza. Abbiamo trovato tutto abbastanza pulito a parte qualche formichina sul letto. Consigliato!
- James (9/5): -
- Rahul (9/5): - The stay was rustic and close to nature Could renovate a bit
- Ryan (6/5): - Lovely staff and location but lots of bugs in our room. Tiny ants could get the mosquito net and into our bed which we had to remove each night. Not the nicest. Maybe it was just our room.
- Michele (8/5): Simple tree house in lovely location - Location and views - clean and quiet Breakfasts very little choice and repeat on a 2 day cycle. WiFi also often down but….
- Sabina (8/5): -
- Casey (10/5): -
- Cherre (9/5): Amazing! I would recommend to people looking at staying somewhere in Sepilok! - Staying at the retreat is a once in a lifetime experience. The staff were so helpful and friendly, felt like a family feel.
The lodge is incredible as you are overlooking the jungle. The outside bathroom is something I didn’t like but that is a personal preference.
Fare la doccia all'aperto.
- Clare (10/5): Beautiful! - Beautiful room, super clean, super lovely to have a vegan breakfast option, shuttle was so convenient to see orangutans/bears, staff were kind, cats and dogs calm.
- Daniela (8/5): - Immerso nella giungla. Poca flessibilità nelle richieste. Colazione misera.
- Kie Heon (8/5): -
- Aloa17 (8/5): Nettes Hotel mit Aussicht - Gratis ShuttleService zu Hauptzeiten, 5 MYR pro Person.ansonsten. Essen sehr gut.

Pyszne jedzenie. Przemiła obsługa. Free shuttle bus do Sepilok. Wybrałam Paganakan drugi raz i drugi raz byłam bardzo zadowolona: Troszkę małe śniadania.
- Marta (10/5): Wonderful stay close to nature - Houses in the jungle, beautiful views from the balcony, outside bathroom. Close to Sepilok Orangutan Center. Very nice food. N/A
- MARCIN (10/5): - Miejsce otoczone lasem deszczowym, świetne widoki i odgłosy przyrody. Na miejscu bar z tanimi i smacznymi posiłkami. Całodobowy dostęp do herbaty i kawy. Super atmosfera, wygodne miejsca do spania.
- david (1/5): Da evitare . - Nulla , completamente da ristrutturare Tutto . Struttura fatiscente
- Jenn (10/5): Top - En pleine jungle ! Cher pour un lodge
