Guest Reviews
- Reuben (10/5): - Very clean and affordable. Zero complaints.
- Gabriela (10/5): - The best hostel of Townsville
- Gabriela (10/5): - Nice hostel
- Kirsty (10/5): - .
- Ann (8/5): - Room 10 needs maintenance on the ceiling fan.. very loud goes only on helicopter speed
- Kylie Maree (8/5): - My first time staying in a hostel was very comfortable. The place was clean, staff very helpful and room had air conditioning.
- Leyla (10/5): - Good place close to everything
- Leyla (10/5): - Very friendly and great facilities.
- Adam (4/5): - Unfriendly guests.
- Beryl (10/5): - Absolutely superb!!!
Wonderful position, close to Cowboys Leagues Club, rooms air/confitioned, fridge, coffee available in the shared lounge, tastefully furnished. Shared bathroom clean and spacious, great shared kitchen. Complementary transfer to Greyhound terminal.
- Loreleen (10/5): - Close to the City, it feels like a real home. Staff are so friendly. Organized and clean. Easy to go around with, people likewise. Me and my husband we're so happy that we stayed here đ
- Otake (10/5): - čŻă
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Pleasantly surprised ! We had a private room which was great, had a full size fridge and good size bathroom. There was a cold water refiller which is always nice at a hostel. Kitchen only had 2 bowls other than that we had a great stay !
- Charlotte (6/5): - The rooms themselves are nice and clean (we stayed in a private double) however it was let down by its poor communication and lack of staff.
Prior to arriving we rang and emailed multiple times about instructions for late check in but no reply until we chased. Also no-one told us when we stored our bags that you would not be able to access them between 12-2pm! We had a bus at 1pm and the receptionist had not told us about this when storing the bag, plus there are no signs about this anywhere! This was very stressful and AGAIN no-one picked up the phone when ringing the out of hours number.
- Aiden (8/5): Great for solo travellers - A great affordable option. 10-15 minute walk to the Strand and Ferry with convenient bus routes nearby. The kitchen, laundry and social areas are well kept up and had everything I needed for my stay. My only complaint was the construction work that was going on at the time, which wasnât mentioned online before I booked my stay, and resulted in several bathrooms being unavailable and I had a circular saw running right outside my window as early as 7 in the morning multiple days. Check in and out were easy and the AC in the rooms was more than sufficient. Overall great if travelling by yourself when you donât want to cash out for an expensive hotel
- Roslyn (6/5): - The guesthouse has a friendly atmosphere with a young, multicultural clientele. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. I liked having a fridge in my room. It was great that they provided a free shuttle to the ferry terminal.
Some of the communal areas need a revamp.
- Clara (10/5): Convenient location great kitchen. - Well maintained, with lots of space to hang out near reception, next to the kitchen, outside the kitchen, also books corner. Delightful surprise with filtered water, kettle, coffee sachets and tea bags at reception. Lots of fridge and shelf space for food storage. The 4 bed female room with its own bathroom and toilet was neat and tidy. May have been better with more storage space.
- Matthew (10/5): - Room was spotless and had everything I needed. Great common area facilities and a very relaxed vibe. Great location too.
- Amanda (8/5): - Had a great stay for one night! Clean rooms and convenient location. Includes a free shuttle service to the ferry/bus terminal which was super handy!
- Sereima (4/5): - Overall it was ok for a backpacker. I was very disappointed with the noise at night. Was hard to go to sleep. The never ending talking and laughing after midnight, we finally went to sleep at 0300hrs. That was when the talking finally stopped
- Kristina (10/5): - The bloke at recption was very helpful. He patiently organized the after hour check in. Very good. His helpfulness and patience safed my day
- Kristina (10/5): - Great value for money, Very clean and friendly staff. Bed was compfy. Lovely areas to hang out,
It suited the purpose and i would book again.
- Francis (8/5): - Good sized rooms, very friendly and accommodating staff. Unfortunately there were a lot of cockroaches. Most of them small but I saw several large ones scurrying out from under people's doors.
- Teresa (10/5): - We are mature ladies. We walked through the door Ricardo helped us with are large bags to next level 3 levels no lift. Itâs basic very clean SO WORTH THE MONEY. The new owners have had this property under a month we were there 4 days and there were shelves being put up the rooms were being decorated the swimming pool should be open in a month. Townsville is very up and coming and anyone young you can walk to most places. Free shuttle to ferry to magnetic island. Taxi and shuttle are very reliable.
- Priten (8/5): Good Location, Friendly Staff - Great staff, good location and nice rooms and social areas. The showers were powerful and lots of hot water, good place to rest before heading to Whitehaven Beach for a tour.
- Salko (8/5): - Thank you
- Maebh (10/5): Perfect stay - This place is extremely friendly and clean. Absolutely loved it for the quick stay I had and I will definitely be back. Ideal location.
- Olivier (8/5): - Good to stay for couple of days
- Ingrid (8/5): - I loved how clean the premises are, very high standard.
- Olivier (8/5): - The room 10 with bathroom was a bit noisy. Between room 10 and the toilet there is a "rest room", people come here to have a sky or a chat with others, I have to see them and ask them to leave the place, cause we couldn't sleep cause of the noise.
- Trevor (8/5): - Friendly staff
- Jacqueline (10/5): - Every thing about this place was amazing very clean close to bus stops to the Ferry terminal and also walking distance if you donât mind a nice walk Lynda was very welcoming thank you 10/10
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I liked the friendliness of the staff , & I liked that I was able to borrow a book from their reading room.
Civic Guest House was a pleasant place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Price
- Mark (10/5): Good location and relaxed atmospheređ - Great stay, close to town, relaxed atmosphere and would stay again thanks to the staff for a great stayđđ
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Wonderful place , warm people.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Civic Guesthouse is in ideal location in the city. Everything is at walking distant the staff and guests are friendly, guest are loud at times mainly at night. But itâs the social space
Inclusive you get to meet all walks of life.
I will definitely stay at Civic Guesthouse again on my next visit to Townsville.
- Valerie (8/5): Great hostel - As far as hostels go, this one is probably among the best. Quite clean, great staff, great location, parking available nearby.
- Lucinda (10/5): Good value - Nice place to stay. Good value.
- Lucinda (8/5): Great cheap accommodation - The accommodation was great value for money.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Do not choose budget room with fan only - We stayed here in the middle of summer and the room only had a fan, no aircon. It was terribly hot, which made the room unbearable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location, friendly staff and everything we needed for a short stay
- Jason (6/5): - I booked a single twin room, but when I arrived they had mistakenly placed me in a dorm room. The room stank of body odor and the bathroom of mould.
Single rooms there are great, dorm no way.
- Lauren (8/5): Clean and welcoming place to stay - I stayed here just for one night and enjoyed my stay. When I arrived at Civic Guest House, there was no one on reception but a couple of minutes later someone arrived to check me in. The guy was really nice but seemed a little confused about what he was doing which also then confused me and took a little longer than I hoped. I then got a quick tour around the place which was useful and I liked as you don't always get this.
The room itself was clean and modern. Although as I booked late I ended up with a top bunk which I didn't think looked very safe as it had no railing whatsoever and I didn't have another option. The bathroom in our room was very clean but I didn't like that it didn't have a lock on so I felt conscious that someone would move it.
In the room there was a fridge which was a bonus and also lockers for your valuables which was great.
As it was a short stay I didn't use many of the other facilities but overall it looked welcoming and the people were friendly.
If I was to stay in Townsville again, I would definitely stay here. If you are a backpacker or just need a couple of nights accommodation I would recommend this to others. It is quite basic but has everything you need for a short stay.
- Rhian (6/5): - Service was great. Shuttle from the greyhound dropoff to the ferry terminal was spot on. And was warmly greeted by some staff.
In the quick nights stay I had, I didn't get the best of feelings for the accomodation however. Kitchen was hectic, unorganised and a mess - felt really unusable. Facilities were basic and not in the best condition.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good Value for Money - Friendly helpful staff and well located beside the climb to Castle Hill for stunning views. Beside a supermarket for supplies. Good value for money. A mix of longer term travellers on holiday visas and short term guests. Stated here previoyslh in an upstairs dorm which was alot nicer than the downstairs dorm I slept in on thus occassion.
- Verena (8/5): Cheap and Cheerful - I stayed in a 4 bed ensuite dorm in Civic Guesthouse and it was clean and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. They provide a free shuttle to/from the Greyhound Bus and Ferry Terminal four times daily which is a bonus. A mix of short-term travellers and longer-term working visa guests. Primarily young people and difficult to mix as a more mature visitor. Kitchen and bathroom facilities fine. Lots of little private spaces to relax, read etc. Slept very well. Located right beside the Goats Walk entrance to the Castle Hill climb. Woolworth's only a few minutes walk for those wishing to self cater. Would recommend. Good value for money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I was very happy to find a cheap and affordable room for the night at such a short time.
- Laura (10/5): Fabulous :-) - Stayed here for 3 nights, it was so lovely! Crisp clean sheets, nice kitchen, very social - as in people were friendly and chatty, liked the lights being turned down for quiet times in the evenings too. Cathy was awesome on Reception! Perfectly situated, great WiFi - sadly not available in the room but the communal area was great where you could get it. Air con was fab and having own fridge and bathroom in the dorm was such a bonus! Would 100% recommend.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cosy and homely - What a wonderful location, cosy room's, we'll set out and I love the little nooks and small lounges dotted around to read and take time out while still amongst the guests.
The host was brilliant, kind, caring warm and had great local knowledge :-)
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really friendly staff. Cosy hostel, really nice places to sit and relax
- max (6/5): Nice hostel, shame about the noise - Nice hostel at convenient central location. Reception staff were very friendly. Only downside was noise at night. Each night we were there the nightime receptionist would have loud conversations with guests/play movies on laptop that kept us up past midnight. Not good if you're staying for work purposes!
- Coops (10/5): Great Value! - Extremely friendly and clean, and could not be beaten for price ...
- Anna-Carin (10/5): - Nice place. Quite simple rooms.
- corgi (10/5): Great week of warm weather
- A great place to stay and really friendly people always willing to help you out cheers
- kevin (10/5): 2nd time there - I am 73 had good time
- Ryan (10/5): Stayed for groovin in moo show - Very nice staff, nice area to socilise, friendly atmosphere, would stay again.
- Rafal (8/5): Great Location to meet new friends - IT was perfect what we needed it for, but the A/C died half way through the night
- citygirl (6/5): Nice hostel, near town cbd. - Clean and tidy hostel near centre of town. The bed was comfy and the room and facilities were clean, in this small heritage building. Pick up available from ferry and coach terminal at certain times of day.
- Parvez (8/5): - A good place to make new friends. Clean kitchen and lounge area.
- Sean (8/5): Central hostel free parking nearby - Nice hostel, friendly staff, take room on top floor, quieter at night. Towels provided in room, no deposit to be paid.
- Max (8/5): Nice hostel - This hostel was nice and clean. The guy at the reception was really nice and he illustrated all the hostel to us. The room was comfortable and everything was good.
- Philip (10/5): Very nice and convenient, - Very friendly and supportive staff, centrally located to supermarket, cafes, restaurants and the beach and Strand area!
- Edwardo (10/5): Great, staff very wecoming - It was great staying there and will recommend to family and friends
- Verified traveler (6/5): It's a hostel but quite a good one - Ok as hostels go. Quite clean and worth paying a bit more for a private bathroom. Noisy but thats probably to be expected.
- Elin (8/5): Nice hostel - We stayed here for three nights, it was a nice hostel, good kitchen, nice room and friendly staff :)
- Claire (8/5): - Good clean rooms with refrigerator, small storage space and desk. Free pick up service at certain times offered from Magnetic Island ferry and Greyhound. Front desk staff were excellent. Limited kitchen facilities versus amount of guests meant that the kitchen was sometimes chaotic around meal times.
- Ceri (8/5): Friendly knowledgeable staff - good location - Booked in for a 2 night stay in a private double en-suite room which was more than adequate for what we needed. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and very helpful with all of our queries regarding the local area. The was a communal kitchen which we didn't use so unable to comment on but plenty of people seemed to be using it.
The wifi is free in the sitting area at the front of the building & we always found somewhere to sit.
The location is good and is approx 15 minute walk to the seafront & 15 minutes in the other direction to the pubs & restaurants.
I would stay at this hotel again & would recommend it to others.
- Matthew (8/5): Nice cool room, not so clean bathroom. - We stayed for one night in a private double room. Air con was quite noisy but very good, kept us cool. We had a fridge in our room which was great, bed was comfy. Kitchen facilities were good. Only negative was that the bathroom wasn't really that clean.
- Deb (4/5): Cheap room in the city - Was uncomfortable and noisy. No car parking. Waiting for a long time for staff to man the desk.
- Peter (8/5): Central Location for Townsville Centre - A good and pleasant stay, especially for the reasonable price (three types of rooms), perhaps surprisingly quiet but the guests are respectful of the times for a quiet period.
- Colin (10/5): Excellent Value for Money - Exceptional value for money. Spotlessly clean and well maintained with the most friendly staff I have encountered for some time. Location is perfect with a blocks walk into the city center and 15 minute walk to the bus and ferry terminal.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good hostel - Very friendly owner picked us up and gave us a tour of Townsville. Room and facilities were very nice, if I have any complaints it would be just not enough bathrooms for each floor. Woolworths is a min or two away and the promenade is maybe 15min walk.
- Verified traveler (8/5): good spot - Enjoyable stay, good location fair price.
- Robbie (8/5): Nice and friendly hotel - Did not know that it was backpackers accommodation as Wotif advertises it as a guest house. On arrival, reception staff did not appear to receive adequate information about my booking. I was lucky to have the printed confirmation email of Wotif. During booking with Wotif, I was under the impression that I was given a single non-smoking room with shared toilet. The reception staff thought that I was going to share the bed room with another guest and toilet with other guests. There seems to be inadequate communication between civic guest house and Wotif and misleading advertisement of the available room. I did not use the room or other communal facilities during 8 am to 8 pm. Wifi was available with many disruptions close to the reception area. After 10 pm, there was little light available to make a trip from room to the toilet which is down the corridor. As toilet, bathroom, corridors and bedroom are not on the same level, the chances of personal injury is high with inadequate lighting.
- kylie (6/5): Didn't release it was a back packer motel - The room wasn't warm with just a sheet n a throw blanket
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was great 2nights in Civic Guest House. I will recommend it!!
- JMoz (10/5): all good in Townzvillage - second time using this facility and happy with all attributes, well operated, clean, all the mod-con's,
- Steve (8/5): - Good place to stay. Close to airport , friendly staff.
