- Shari (9/5): Superb - Amazing character filled and historic building, incredible camera collection and replica classical paintings cover the walls to the high ceilings, wonderful location. The shower was separate to the room and was a short walk across the landing, the shower room itself was a little grubby needs some love.
- Carrianne (7/5): Good -
- James (9/5): A guest house where you truly feel like a guest. The hosts were FABULOUS - We enjoyed the stay here, central to our day trips, its quirky old school nature, over 100 year old heritage building. Breakfast great start to the day.
And lastly the Hosts +++++
- Tony (5/5): Passable -
- James (10/5): Good location, great breakfast and even better hosts. Thank you so much for a lovely stay - ps hope the concert went wel - Hosts were extremely welcoming on arrival and throughout telling us about their Liverpool connection their family had and the history of the home. Room was very big and clean albeit unique. Breakfast served promptly and very accommodating - good selection and more than happy to make adjustments to suit needs.
- Marilyn (8/5): I would return to this property again. Its location and convenience made my short stay successful. - The breakfast was lovely. Fresh and beautifully presented. - Jackie (5/5): The guesthouse is definitely not a 9/10 rating. Disappointed with the dust. Location and host great. - We loved the location, the security and our hosts and the history of the guesthouse. It could have been a lot cleaner and less clutter.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb - Excellent staff, good breakfast, good location and comfortable
- Phoebe (10/5): This is a beautiful old historical building, don’t expect pristine facilities.if you want something different and intere - Beautiful old building with lots of history. Lots of quirky decor and collection to check out. You need to be able to carry your case/bags up two flights of stairs so if that is an issue it’s not a good choice.

- Mac (7/5): I would recommend this guest house to friends as a very pleasant and unusual experience - Interesting and old-fashioned place with plenty of collectables in cabinets and on the walls.
Well supplied tea and coffee area
Port decanter was a special addition Surprised to have breakfast offered, but the menu was grander than the actuality.
- Frances (10/5): Exceptional -
- Geoff (8/5): Very good - Kath was a brilliant host. Very friendly and gave us ideas of where to go and what to see. She also cooked us a great breakfast and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine.
The location was perfect; we had caught a bus from Perth and our stay was about a 2 minute walk from the bus station.
Highly recommended. The cold, and the wind!! (Although neither of these could be blamed on the Guest House.
- Thanh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bridget (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandhya (9/5): Quirky but warm and comfortable stay - Quirky apartment. Very friendly hosts who give you a lot of space and quiet. They also have a parking lot, which is convenient since the apartment is located in an area where parking is a little hard to find. The bed had a warmer that came in handy during the cold night. Breakfast was usual but good! Food is not allowed on the bed. But it's not a big deal! We were informed of the rules on arrival, which helped ease matters.
- Needham (7/5): Good - Old smell from carpets. Clean or replace.
- Teck (10/5): Historic Albany. - Historic accommodation and it feels like we are in a museum with lots of antique cameras and paintings. The home cooked breakfast was a delight. Lugging heavy suitcase up a flight of stairs was challenging but expected.
- Kim (8/5): Pretty, period house with interesting paintings and collectables. - Good location, off street safe parking, tasty breakfast, friendly hosts.
- Shayne (1/5): Very unpleasant - Location Cluttered
Bathroom very dirty
Stained sheets
- Megan (2/5): 1881 is tired - Cathy the host is lovely The 1881 building is very tired and in need of a lot of maitenance. The position is amazing. Im sorry to have to be negative.

Big breakfast would normally come with 2 toasts , maybe add mushroom, 2 eggs not 1
Hollandaise was ok but muffins very small coffee facilities great
Ensuite is necessary but 165 all in quite steep but we couldn't find anything else
Location good
Owners great, very helpful thankyou Key code automated gate would be something we would definitely change

Great location.
Quirky and fun.
Affordable.
Quiet.
Convenient.
Love the art work and vibe of the place.
Some beautiful old joinery windows and doors as well as stairs etc. I stayed in room 1 with ensuite.
Bathroom is too small
Smells of mould
Needs a bathroom Reno…… Desperately.
Noisy exhaust fan needs replacing immediately.
General maintenance needs a tradesman to sort out.
- Susan (1/5): Please could you be honest with what you are offering - The people were lovely The property was not as advertised.
There was not a private bathroom, there was no private bathroom or bath as advertised. We felt that the property needed to be closed for refurbishment as it needed lots of work to bring it up to how it is advertised . The breakfast was cold and cooked an hour before.
- School (8/5): Very good - Great location, very affordable and perfect for a short stay
- Graeme (7/5): old style B&B- nice host and breakfasts - Breakfast was lovely with good selection. Host Cathy was very accomodating and helpful. Room and foyer a little tired and cluttered. 2 Flights of stairs to bedroom- however that was how it was !!
- Cliveyb (9/5): A really good unusual guest house. - Location was excellent. The quirky decor and the camera collection was fantastic.
The hosts were friendly, helpful in every way. Nothing.
- Diane (8/5): Very good -
- Royboy (9/5): Superb -
- Donna (9/5): Superb -
- Sean (10/5): A home away from home - It had a fantastic vibe, free secure parking in the back, breakfast included every morning. The decor was beautiful and interesting and the accommodation housed a very large and interesting camera collection. There was no AC and in the room we were in but with the extremely high ceilings it saved us from the heat.
- Relsy (8/5): Very good - The managers are wonderful, happy to help and just lovely people.
- Charles (8/5): Fine - Very friendly host in good location Facilities need a bit of tlc
- Nigel (9/5): Superb - We were treated very well by the host and the accommodation was as good as could be expected for a property of its style and age. Definitely recommend to the right travellers. Some modernisation of the bathroom facilities would improve the appeal without compromising the charm.
- Jason (8/5): Very good -
- Elizabeth (8/5): Very good -
- Petra (10/5): Fantastic! - We absolutely loved our stay! Amazing room and beautiful breakfast, lovingly made by our host Kathy. We will be back! Loved everything!
- Jenny (9/5): Superb -
- Alan (9/5): We were comfortable and well looked after. - Kathy was very friendly and helpful. Lots of breakfast choice and very flexible timing. Very quirky accommodation, something different, in a good way. No a/c in our room and we had one very hot day. But ceiling ate 4,5m high. We were lucky, but possibly could be a noisy location on a Saturday night as close to the pub.
- Laura (7/5): Artwork! - Extremely kind and considerate. Willing to go the extra mile. Good people. Always willing to accommodate in a genuine way.
- Sally (8/5): Very good -
- Stefanie (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (8/5): Really loved our introduction to Albany and Kathy was a delight - I like quirky, one can do modern anytime. Kathy was a delight. You could spend a week looking at all her keepsakes. High stairs so taking all our luggage up, was not necessary. Fantastic Thai close by. Great view and just a great spot. Was pleasure spending our money here. Unfortunately there was no availability for another night. Nothing it was good. Although The grounds are a bit dangerous, but thats the building and surrounds in itself. Its not a criticism on our part.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb -
- Paul (2/5): Very poor -
- Tracey (8/5): Very good -
- Ben (9/5): A very enjoyable stay - Great location, friendly owners and very comfortable stay in a historic building. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting Albany.
- Treasure (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (8/5): Very enjoyable historical old building, comfortable room, great facilities, lovely hosts. - Convenience and value for money. Nothing we didn’t like.
- Jacqueline (7/5): We were made to feel very welcome - Heritage property in excellent location. Bathroom needs updating.
- Robin (7/5): Quirky accommodation, not 5 star but great fun. - Good breakfast. Quirky building absolutely full of character Bathroom facility could be better
- Damien (5/5): Passable - Breakfast Property needs to be refurbished - freshened up...
Rooms were very cluttered and also very musty. Also there were too many cameras.
- David (5/5): Passable -
- Monica (8/5): Very good -
- Jaqueline (8/5): A unique opportunity to stay somewhere with character. - The unique character of the accommodation and its location were excellent. The owners were very pleasant and helpful, particularly with the ease of communication via the booking.com app. The views from the front windows are lovely. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to stay in historic buildings. Unfortunately we didn't really like the breakfast but that it is offered is a good thing. The tariff reflects the fact that as an old building things were slightly unusual in terms of bathrooms, amenities etc but that is what makes the accommodation so interesting and out of the ordinary.
- Fran (8/5): Very good - The hosts were lovely. Very informative and accommodating
- Tessa (7/5): Friendly hosts and interesting stay - Friendly hosts, great location, excellent breakfast, unique and interesting accommodation. Bathroom cleanliness.
- Cheryl (6/5): Handy location but needs an upgrade. - Great location. Old bank building with amazing high ceilings and lots of history. Looking very tired. Renovations are being undertaken.
- William (8/5): Very good -
- Lisa_121 (4/5): Does not have the charm I had hoped for. - Location is excellent. Close to town centre, bus, and train. Owners pleasant and accommodating. This place has a lot of potential, but is let down by the excessive clutter, collections and décor.
My room was big, clean but cluttered with unnecessary furniture and stuff. Bathroom clean and adequate size. Only one towel provided, no hand towel or face washer. A hairdryer in the room as well as a kettle would make it more comfortable.
Small electric heater, that eventually heated room.
Fruit bowl in dining room a nice touch. I've stayed at many heritage style guesthouses around the world, as I like to experience their history and charm, but this was a huge disappointment.
Any charm the place holds is stripped away by excessive and tacky canvas prints of European old paintings and cabinet after cabinet of camera collections. Mixed with fake flowers, nic naks, lace doilies and bright red plastic placemats.
So many different eras crammed into each room, it was claustrophobic.
I have no problem with people showcasing collections, but they need to consider that not every guest has the same passion, nor wants to see so much of it, and particularly in their room. Whilst the owners are of the belief that most guest like this, they could consider the rest of us who don't. Otherwise they will continue to be very very niche, and who can afford that in business these days??
Decluttering, and modern styling would go a long way to make guests feel comfortable, and like they are actually in paid accommodation and not awkward in someone's home with their personal effects everywhere.
Bed hard and no range of pillow comfort to choose from.
Breakfast - would have liked a pot of tea or coffee, butter, juice, milk, jam, on table to access freely. Instead had to ask, and when I wanted a top up, no one around to assist.
No kettle in room, instead had to go to kitchenette, where there was no microwave also.
Dining table in rooms, but not allowed to eat in room without permission!
This is not a personal attack on the owners, it's an observation, constructive feedback and comparison to similar guesthouses based on my travel and business experience.
I've read the owners responses to some reviews, all feedback is important to consider, as are all guests' preferences.
EDIT: Strange how all guests that have written negative reviews are labelled 'complainers" by the owners.
- Edmund (8/5): Very good -
- Leanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sue (5/5): Passable - This is a very quirky establishment, like entering another world or a time warp. The owner was friendly and helpful, I was the only guest there. Lots of interesting snacks and hot drink options in the kitchen, even port to drink if you fancy an evening tipple. It was not obvious to find and after a very long drive it took me a while and asking a few people to work out it was not one of the hotels or pubs with frontage on the Main Street but behind a gate and down an alley and then I had to get instructions of where the entrance was to park the car. It would be helpful if this information was given at booking.
The place is very difficult to describe and needs to be seen to be believed, it is very eccentrically decorated in my mind, hung with huge copies of works of art like a museum, curtained off areas, rich fabrics and artifacts and signs and information everywhere. It is quite old fashioned, and the bathroom was very basic. I have stayed in many places all over the world and this is definitely a one off. Some people will love it for its quirkiness, others may find it a bit too much like a museum of curiosities so I am giving this review to try and help people have an idea of what it is like.
- Peter (9/5): Really fascinating place to spend some time. Our accommodation was unique. - Our hostess was wonderful. Could not fault her. No comment everything was great
- Jude (9/5): Had Lovely Stay. - Location is excellent with views of the harbour. Quirky, in a very nice way. Husband and wife who own it are extremely nice and very helpful.
- Libby (4/5): a return visit is not anticipated in the future - not much appealed to me cluttered, dusty with no real decor style
- Maria (5/5): expensive for what you get - location not clean
- Van (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debra (9/5): A great place to stay to experience the history of Albany, located in the heart of the town. - We travel a lot and really enjoy unique places. This property has such character, enhanced by the massive camera collection - hundreds of them, and an "art gallery feel" you could spend hours looking at them all! The owners are gentle, inclusive people who genuinely care and take an interest in who you are. History is everywhere! Recommended. There was nothing I didn't like - as with many unique places they are a work in progress - which for me makes them even more interesting. Would have liked an iron/ironing board in the room because we had meetings, but I am sure they would have provided one if we asked - was not listed in their information. I would have also liked a little more history on the house - probably there but not in the info pack in the room. These small negatives just show how good the experience was!
- Marta (6/5): Pleasant - Very friendly owners, fantastic location, ocean view. Breakfast included in price. Nice touch like port wine in common area for guests.
We booked a room with "Private External Bathroom" that was supposed to be "beside the room". Unfortunately the bathroom beside the room had no toilet and to use the toilet we had to walk to the other side of the corridor to a different bathroom. On our second night we noticed that people from other rooms were using both bathrooms that were supposed to be exclusively for us. We complained about both those issues at the check out and Kathy the owner apologised and offered us a partial refund, which we really appreciated. Apparently the other people were informed that the bathrooms are only for our room but ignored it, probably good idea to have them locked with key access only. The bed and room was clean but both bathrooms definitely need renovating and the whole place needs a good vacuuming, there is a fair bit of dust everywhere. The bathroom for room 4 should not be advertised as "beside the room".
- Judi (8/5): safe, good location but felt like I’d gone back to the 1970’s - very well located. safe off street parking and really nice couple . They could not have been kinder and more welcoming. An old bank so very high ceilings and interesting property. bed very comfortable I could do with a bit of TLC. it’s like something out of the 1970’s. I wasn’t particularly keen on the two cabinets of cameras in my room and it was noisy from the nearby pub in Friday and Saturday night but I used earplugs and slept well
