Guest Reviews
- Carolyn (7/5): Very convenient and my room was warm and sunny - Breakfast was great. It was super noisy on a Saturday night un til late.
- Taura (4/5): -
- Jase-Ollie (7/5): - Tidy room.
Large bed.
- Deb (6/5): -
- F Phillips (9/5): - Loved everything about the hotel. Not suitable for children or people wanting to sleep at night as there was Karaoke till midnight.
- Tim (7/5): -
- Sacht (7/5): Good value for money, don’t expect much. - Bathroom clean and good shower pressure, beds comfortable and clean. AC was faulty and wasn’t cooling, just blowing hot air. The AC was on we we arrived, basically just warming up the room, and we didn’t have a remote to turn it off. We had to sleep with windows open and fan on, so sleep was poor due to all the traffic noise below coming through the window.
- Nyla (7/5): Very satisfactory thanks to the welcoming and kind managers - Convenient to our places we wanted to visit Sadly a pub creates noise at night but it eventually stopped and we could sleep well
- David (6/5): - Didn’t get a breakfast Cleanliness
- Ray (8/5): Comfortable and clean. -
- Leanne (9/5): -
- Victor Bruce (8/5): Efficient. - I had my own breakfast and departed at 5.45 am. My hearing is not 100% and I found it difficult to pick up Bill's accent. That was a minor issue.
- Jill (7/5): Suited our purpose of family weekend - Location was perfect, no breakfast available. Replenish the tea bags, straighten the beds!
- Sydine (9/5): - Staff are lovely
- Grace (7/5): -
- rhiannon bryan (9/5): Great value - Lovely staff and clean, comfortable room, great cafe. A little bit of noise from the bar over night but not too loud
- Sue (7/5): The room itself was fine but no communication from staff apart from booking in - The room had everything i needed. I was told the car park for customers would be locked at 9.30, so I made arrangements for my car to be left at another venue, so I walked and got rides from friends which was not really appreciated. No one offered to help carry my bag up the stairs.
- Rebecca (6/5): Was fine for what we needed - Perfect location for why we were there
- Perry (5/5): Passable - Location was a bit run down and the hotel could do with a spruce up, air con wasn't working. As above
- Potaka (6/5): - Short and sweet Smell of curry in hallway
- Bruce (2/5): i don't think I will be coming back. - the bed was good, I slept well with the room at 18 degrees. The coffee was good. The people tried to fix what should have been good to go, The room door kept not letting me in, even with the swipe card, neither the security staff or myself could get in, we had to shoulder the door to get it to open. I didn't lock the door when I left in case it couldn't be opened again.
There was no remote for the air conditioning. I had to get the manager to get someone else's. The TV didn't hook up to the Wi-Fi, until I turned it off for 5 minutes and restarted it all. I asked for a rear steak, it was medium rear. The carpet on the stairs was in very poor condition; it looks very run down. There was broken glass, lots of it in the car park area along with a rubbish heap.
- Russiaan (10/5): -
- Gail (7/5): Value for money comfortable stay great Staff member - Excellent friendly helpful reception staff
- Eddy (7/5): - Did have breakfast nil
- Angela-Lee (1/5): The most worse experience ever, and I have stayed at many hotels before. - Nothing The place was dirty, the carpet had stains and the floors were not vacuumed properly. The stench was disgusting, the covers on the beds had marks on them, we ended up buying sheets, pillows and blankets so we didn’t have to sleep on the bedding provided. The fridge didn’t work, I told the hotel lady and informed her we had to through some of our food out as our food spoiled due to fridge not working, she apologised and offered to get a working fridge from another room, which they did. No running water in one of the toilets, the parking area was unrecognisable due to the piles of rubbish and broken driveway. Very noisey, heard everything upstairs from the road and the pub. Would not recommend to anyone, if there was available accommodation we would had moved on, but there wasn’t and we just had to deal with it.
- Maru (8/5): It was easy to find, allowed for late check in and value for money - Allowed for late check in I asked for a double bed and I was scared I might pop a tyre parking in the back parking area.
- Jitendra (4/5): Disappointing accommodation - Bed linen were clean First thing as we entered the entrace door heaps of laundry bags were piled up just in front of the door.Windows curtains were broken of Room 5
Dirty windows and rubbish outside the window balcony.
Tv wasnt going on for Room 5 and one of the power point. Dirts in the corners of the ceiling. Dirty air vent in the room.
It would be great if they could improve thier cleaning standards.
- Louana (5/5): -
- Roziana (7/5): - Hotel was clean. They didn't have irons in any 5 rooms we took. Nor even available with reception
- Smith (8/5): - It was close to the township, and there was a restaurant and bar in one place .
The staff were amazing 👏
We ended up staying another night. The fridge needed to be cleaned from mold.
- Pranav (5/5): Disappointing Value for the Price Paid - The double bed was comfortable, the shower had good pressure, and the location was good only a few minutes drive to New Plymouth. For the price of $195 per night, the room did not feel good value for money. While this may have been due to the time of year, the room felt more in line with a, $100-110 per night stay. The carpet was old and appeared dirty. There was hair in the toilet and a long strand of hair on one of the body towels. The white cups had stains inside, and two cups were stuck to their saucers, which meant we purchased paper cups from the nearby New World. There were also cobwebs on the ceiling lights, which gave an overall impression that cleaning standards could be improved.
- michael (5/5): -
- mulagada (10/5): - I was there for Christmas. Down there was a bar and restaurant. Music was loud till midnight. Might be because of Christmas celebrations. Other then that all good
- Smith (8/5): -
- Alex (5/5): Ok - Did not have breakfast Road and band from bar made sleeping hardok
- Collins (7/5): Fair to middling - It was the only place to stay after a long journey plus I left a chilly bin in my room and they kept it for me to pick up. Also a great location for a beautiful walk in the morning Was very run down but I tried to think of it as quaint and historic
- Vivienne (4/5): - Location was really good for us. Unit was clean and fresh. Air con didn't work. Room wasn't serviced, though folder in room said it would be. After hours exit and entrance not explained. Had to ask about room location. Someone else's food left in fridge. Some noise from band downstairs was expected.
- Marco Nadig (6/5): für eine nacht auf der durchreise durchaus ok! - ausgestorbene umgebung, kein restaurant
- Banks (1/5): Never again - Nothing It's the worst area of New Plymouth
- Tony (8/5): Reasonable Hotel - The room was very comfortable and staff very pleasant.
- Gary (8/5): G - Great budget accomodation. Room was quite noisey as it was right over the bar area.
Great staff and service
- Daina (4/5): - Room was dirty and PowerPoints beside bed did not work. Also VERY noisy with bar underneath and music
- Neville (10/5): - Very friendly welcome, everything clean and tidy.
Best water pressure in the shower, better than home and ours is great
- Jan (8/5): - Very central in the Waitara town.
Downside was the noise coming from the bar below. This has been the case on the 2 occasions we have stayed at the hotel. We just accept that this is part of the deal!
- Jordan (8/5): - A pleasant stay.
- Lyndell (4/5): - Stayed in the Deluxe King Room from 14-16th February 2025. It is situated on the front corner of the building. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was awesome. HOWEVER......the air-conditioning was not doing ANYTHING to cool the room. The temperature was around 27/28 degrees for the duration of my stay. And this was even after a 'service' by a technician on the Saturday. Thank goodness a desk fan was supplied. I had to have it going on the highest speed on both nights I stayed and on the bedside table bedside me just to be able to sleep. The carpet in the room needs replacing as it is ripped quite badly by the bed. On my arrival I went to wash my hands in the bathroom only to find a clump of hair sitting in the hand basin. Even with the windows closed, the noise from the bar and street below was extremely loud on the Friday night. Not what you really want after a 4-5 hour drive!
There is no lift in the building, so there was 3 short flights of stairs to climb. Not the best thing if you have a little difficulty ascending and descending stairs as I do. The carpet on the stairs needs either an extremely good clean or total replacement. It looks like white paint has been dropped on it and not in just the odd spot here and there.
Customer and guest parking is available at the rear. It is appalling!! Broken concrete, the remains of broken bottles and a HUGE pile of rubbish - broken old beds, big blocks of broken concrete and goodness only knows what else.
- Brian (6/5): Adequate for a night or 2 - Very old hotel in the middle of a small town. Quite dated….carpets in poor condition, especially in the hallways.
Bed was comfortable and the bathroom fine.
Good restaurant attached.
TV didn’t work, but a tech came in and fixed it.
Noisy bar downstairs, but didn’t go too late.
- Michelle (8/5): - Suited our needs as a bed for the night. Room was right above the bar which was a bit noisy with music and pool tables considering there was only 3 or 4 people in the bar. Disappointed the restaurant wasn't open Sunday morning for breakfast, but found a suitable place up the road.
- SHANN (2/5): Worst hotel room - Absolutely terrible. Check-in was slow, the carpets leading up to, and in, the room was filthy. Linen was clean and beds comfortable. Bathroom was very run down. The music from the hotel downstairs rang through the entire room for a good 5 hours. Anytime someone in the hotel ran water you heard it course through the pipes in your room. So noisy, so terrible that we checked out early.
- Gaylene (6/5): - No sercuity parking, need to park on the street.
Karaoke until 11.30pm. And couldn’t get the aircon to work.
- Teresa and John (4/5): Oh Dear! Where to start. - First impression, Is this the place I saw on the site!! Reception greeting not good. Big Carpet stains on all stairs and passage way. Bedroom, carpet stains and big tear in carpet, approx. 1 1/2 mtrs long - tripping hazard. Bathroom, Our beds Duvet looked like they had just been pulled out of the dryer and were very wrinkled, shower curtain had black mildew at base and specks above. washbasin had water stain where water could not drain. Tea/ coffee provided but no teaspoons or milk. Fridge on but drip tray filled to over flowing. We arrived on the Saturday and were told that the Hotel, restaurant for breakfast and dinner would be closed Sunday and Monday, hence no room service, clean towels etc. when I saw them on the Tuesday afternoon I asked if the room had been serviced they said "we are not allowed inside our room if we are not there" in which they doubled down when i said they could, when i told a employee that we had no towels for days only then did we receive them and they told us "we should've asked" but no one was there, the tea and coffee was finally replenished Aswell, the carpark was filthy and filled with glass and resembled a dump, we had to park on the street, we were exceedingly disappointed with our stay
- Maria (10/5): - Comfortable beds and great room & view. Not too noisy at night from the bar
- Sylvia (10/5): - The staff we're friendly and helpful.
- Robyn (8/5): - Comfortable bed and they make a great coffee and breakfast
- Jake (8/5): - No comment
- Amanda (4/5): - Dirty carpets, noisy owners/managers with loud music, noisy fridge with split dirty door seal, uncomfortable bed, mouldy bottom of shower curtain.
Pleasant bar manager, Chynna. Nice pool tables.
- Gurbir (10/5): - The staff was so helpful and kind...
- Gloria (6/5): - Bar on the bottom of room. Too loud music band playing below
- Anastasia (4/5): - I felt unsafe there, as we were given a key for the room, and we found out it didn't work at all. We advised them, and they said the battery had run out on the door pad or something. My husband had a guitar which we took up to the room to make sure it wasn't stolen out of our car parked outside, and because they did not attend to our key problem straight away, we had to take it back to the car, As we were going out, the night duty lady kindly said to give her the guitar, and she will lock it in the office, till the door was fixed. When we returned late at night, the door had been fixed. I think it was very poor of them to just give us a key, and not double checking if they worked. And as soon as they were told the problem, they should have attended to it straight away, or at least move us into another secure room. I was very disappointed.
- Linda (10/5): - Good value. Clean fresh style, friendly phone calls on details, good breakfast at their cafe. Hadn't realised Waitara was such a pretty town, will stay again.
- Tracy (2/5): - I had to cancel on the day of arrival due to unforseen circumstances. Phone hotel on the day to let them know asked if there was any chance of a refund please. Was told someone would call me back asap. still waiting 7 days later.
- Kim (10/5): - Arrived very late after closing & very accommodating. Very clean & tidy room. Awesome shower & huge comfortable bed. Will be back when in area.
- Susan (10/5): - IT WAS COMFORTABLE, CONVENIENT AND CLEAN.
THERE WAS NOTHING WHICH I DIDN'T LIKE.
- Garry C (8/5): - Very comfortable night
- Verified traveler (6/5): Little bit of this and a little bit of that - Only one person to do check-in, who was also the barmaid for the public bar and the attendant in the pokie room....so that meant we were constantly interrupted during check in. We requested 2 single beds, got a room with 1 queen bed, asked to move us....which took time to find a room with single beds. Thankful that they did move us as the original room they gave us looked out over the back roof of the hotel and nothing else. At least the room we eventually got had a view straight down to the front of the hotel where we could see our rental car which was street parking. We finally got to our room, unpacked then went downstairs to find something to eat only to find on our return that our cards didn't work. So back to reception to request more. On our 3rd night the same thing happened, our cards didn't work so once again we had to get new cards. All up we went through 3 sets of entry cards for a 4 night stay. The rooms are basic but very comfortable. Shower pressure is superb. The in-room guest books need to be updated, they still say that there is room service and that there is a restaurant onsite that serves dinner and breakfast - Not so. Granted that the receptionist did say that she had only been there for a week, between her and Rahoul - I'm sure they're the only 2 that run the hotel/motel, they did a great job trying to do the best with what they had.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Loved the shower friendly manager very quite location
Room Good size Large bed just a smidge on the firm side
For me but partner said all good for him
- Cat (10/5): - The room was lovely, very clean, and nice and quiet. I enjoyed my stay here.
- Wade (8/5): - Good location, friendly helpful staff. TV (remote?) not working. Clock on daylight savings time, sing plumbed backwards, but none of that mattered as much as having a quiet place to sleep. Bed good, I personally don't like duvets (too hot and can't make it cooler so disturbed sleep).
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Waitara is a quiet town with many closed businesses and no dining options in town on a Monday. Ensure you advise that you will be dining in the hotel when you check in, otherwise there may not ma6 any meals available.
Rooms have been refurbished and were clean and fresh. Good value for money.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, newly fitted out rooms with excellent shower.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - What did you like or what was unique about the property. What didn't you like?
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was pleasing.
The only parking offered was on the street.
The restaurant was a disaster - twice the appetiser arrived, while only half the main was served! When asked about the bacon and egg that should have accompanied the burger, I was informed, "Oh dear, sorry I forgot." No offer was made to set the order right, nor any discount offered!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was really clean and rather modern rooms. And the service was great
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very, very friendly staff and the coffee shop was great.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Advertised restaurant and bar. Restaurant not available and bar was limited selection of bottled beer only.
- CC (8/5): What a gem! - Nice and quiet but we would have been happier if the parking was more secure especially since we left our van out on the street.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Awesome staff, super clean and quiet. Great room and shower pressure (AMAZING). Delish meal ordered form downstairs and superb value!
- Lisa (10/5): - Comfortable bed, nice warm temperature in the room, clean, manager on duty friendly and welcoming, excellent food we had at dinner and breakfast.
- MervynAnderson (8/5): - location was great . food was great, staff also great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean and comfortable, generally a Great place to stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good accommodation for a short stay - a short way from New Plymouth, but well worth the travel. I'll use the Masonic Hotel again...
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Best part was the comfy bed & breakfast next morning.. Owners need to update their actual pics of the rooms especially the false advertising picture of the King Deluxe room.. Check in process charged twice for our room, staff member who checked us in was very pleasant but needs to be looked at, not happy at all being charged twice but thanks to the staff member who was on duty when we checked out.
- Jordan (10/5): - Nice hotel, close to shops, absolutely lovely staff and the small cafe next door has great food! Would have happily stayed more nights!
- Robert (10/5): A pleasant surprise - This was a very unprepossessing hotel on the outside, with some quite newly refurbished rooms upstairs with very adequate accommodation. We enjoyed a meal in the dining room in the older part of the hotel downstairs. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Construction in the street outside seemed to affect access to the hotel parking area, so we parked in the street, without any problem.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This suited us for a quick overnight stay. Takeaways across the road. Right in the centre of town.
- Spurofmoment (8/5): Very tidy clean value for money - Good clean hotel. Comfortable well supplied rooms. Easy walk to nice club for meals although also had food available onsite if booked.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Short visit but sweet ,all excellents and have told all our friends to go when they venture that far South.
- Faz (10/5): - Totally worth the money you pay for it. We will be back :) !
- Marty (8/5): Good Location - We were in the area primarily to visit some friends in nearby New Plymouth, and the Masonic Hotel proved to be ideal. The street parking is safe and conveniently located beside the hotel.
- Denise (8/5): Great place to stay and omg that bed!! - Stayed at Masonic while visiting family in the area. As usual room was very clean and comfortable. The bed was so comfortable it was hard to get up in the morning. Will definitely stay again.
- Trish (10/5): - Hotel location was handy for walking most places, comfortable, large room, easy outside parking & free wifi a bonus.
- Annie (8/5): Quick good overnight stay - Nice clean basic place with a restaurant that closes before 8pm so if you need a more proper dinner you need to get there early. Otherwise there aren't a lot of options other than fast food pizza, Indian, Chinese, or fish and chip takeout nearby. We were able to park our car right outside so that was convenient, but if you have trouble climbing stairs to your room then please think twice before you stay here as there is no elevator.
