Guest Reviews
- Angelo (10/5): - Quirky accommodation on top of a truck. Turned out to be very comfortable and unique. Certainly a headturner.
- Ebony (10/5): - Amazing little spot and definitely worth the trip
Staff were friendly and accommodating, they helped us with any questions we had.
Rooms were better than expected, extremely spacious and so cozy. 1000/10
- Martin (10/5): - I was travelling the Mawson Trail by bike. The room was clean, there is a shared kitchen area for the four rooms in the hotel. The balcony view of Mount Remarkable and the main street was fantastic. Food at both pubs in town was great. There is a brewery around the corner. I would stay here again.
- Colin (10/5): - A friendly welcome and helpful staff. Great service.
- Greg (8/5): - Quaint
- Jo (10/5): - Old style accommodation
- Grant (8/5): - Nil
- Tyler (10/5): - Property was so unique and quirky loved our stay
- Jodie (8/5): - Friendly staff, great atmosphere.
Clean and tidy.
Amenities were convenient.
- Kathryn (8/5): - Great location, character accomodation.
- Vanessa (10/5): - Love the quirky green truck
- jill (10/5): - Truck was a glorious surprise - much bigger than it appeared from outside. Far enough away from pub to feel private. Staff were friendly and food at the inn was glorious with lovely Australian flavours. Restful and pleasant getaway, even though the township was very busy that weekend.
- Scott (2/5): - Got put into a dirty room that wasn't cleaned.
Pointed it out and got moved into a cleaned room.
Heater didn't work properly.
Black mould in the bathroom above the shower.
Expected more for $150 a night.
I wouldn't go back or recommend this place.
- Neville (8/5): - Staying in the old trucks is a unique experience. Very easy being just behind the hotel. The bedding needs to be updated and some maintenance - bathroom heating not working
Still a nice place to spend a weekend
- Tania (8/5): - We stayed in the red truck and was very comfortable from bed to nice hot shower. The hotel is beautiful in a old, unquiet way with lovely fire, set among beautiful scenery.Amazing meal at great price
- Mark (10/5): - The North Star Inn is a lovely place to stay. This was our second stay in this same room. Melrose is conveniently positioned to break up the drive from Port Lincoln to Adelaide. The room with ensuite bathroom is spacious, clean and well appointed. The location in Melrose is ideal with easy access to the North Star Inn (obviously) and other venues in the area. We recommend this accommodation.
- Rob (4/5): Chilly Autumnal reception - Charming accommodation but icy service
- Susan (8/5): - Liked the cleanliness, the bathroom and the quite. Could get a couple of new chairs on the verandah. Enjoyed the view
- Verified traveler (8/5): Sleep in a truck! - Room created inside an old truck. Yes, you read well, a truck standing on stumps and secured. Bathroom and toilet are separate, just across the room. Reduced space inside, but sufficient for two people.
- Farshid (10/5): - We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the room and its ensuite. It also had a shared kitchen facility that was very handy. Beautiful hiking trails. We were very happy that we decided to stay the night at Melrose, and we recommend the North Star Hotel.
- Anne (6/5): - Unique is a word that would cover this property!!
It is in need of some tlc & a good clean.
Room was dingy. Shower head fell off. Bed creaked so not much sleep. Broken chairs on the bacony along with a collection of bottles from previous visitors.
Kitchen - didn't use it.
Decor looks like something from the 60s/70s.
- Adam (8/5): - Great pub for dinner. We stayed in the green truck and had a comfortable night stay in a very wild and stormy night. Beats camping!
- Michael (8/5): - Staying in the green truck was very different and the kids loved it.
- Charles (10/5): - We really enjoyed our 2 night stay in one of the balcony rooms.Comfortable queen size bed, renovated ensuite. Effective split system reverse cycle air conditioner. Shared kitchenette provided cereal, juice, tea/coffee and bread/ spreads. It was lovely to sit on the balcony on rustic canvas chairs eating breakfast and watching the world go by. Pub meal next door was delicious!
- Andrea (4/5): - Awful.
- Michael (10/5): - Good room
- Lauren (8/5): - Wasnt keen on having to go outside to the bathroom. Can possibly enclose the deck to make it as one.
- Jerry (10/5): - Stayed in the green truck room. Excellent.
- Peter (8/5): - Needed another blanket on the bed ,
- Bec (10/5): - Great pub, fantastic steak and comfortable clean accommodation.
- Wesley (10/5): - Really enjoyed our stay in the Red Truck - so unique and comfortable and in a great location. Easy walking distance to all Melrose has to offer.
- Kevin (10/5): - Thanks for an interesting stay
- Brenton (10/5): - very friendly, lots of room and very quiet, so central to the main heart of the town. Highly recommend.
- Garry (10/5): Beautiful Melrose - Loved the room, owners and the food!
Love Melrose!
- Kirsten (10/5): - The people were lovely and accommodation v comfortable
- Jacobus van (10/5): - Peace and quiet
- Peter (8/5): Comfortable & good value base to explore Melrose - This hotel ticked all the boxes for a low key hiking weekend - simple, clean and comfortable, reasonable shower pressure and right in the heart of Melrose - walking distance to the MTB tracks and hiking trails. Laid back, country charm, attached to the pub who did a pretty good meal. Access to minibar fridge to chill some of our hiking snacks a bonus. Would stay again.
- Tony (8/5): - Very comfortable
One bedside light didn’t work
- David (10/5): - We stayed in the converted truck … very unique and quirky … good meal in the hotel
- Sean (8/5): - Good comfortable accommodation
- Joanne (8/5): - Beautiful old historic pub in magnificent location and with good food in the bar and restaurant. Just a little more attention to detail is needed, e.g. fix the broken window blind which prevents guests enjoying the spectacular view of the Mount. A bigger fridge is needed as it’s shared between 4 rooms. Fix the broken glass in the door leading out to the balcony. And perhaps find an alternative place to store the giant industrial vacuum cleaner (rather than in the hallway right outside the guest room door).
- Grant (10/5): - Great little spot in one of South Australia's gem locations. Great food at the restaurant, comfortable rooms with clean modern ensuites. Friends also stayed in the unique Trucks out the back of the hotel and enjoyed that experience very much.
- Hugh (10/5): - Lovely room with new en suite, lovely position.
Happy to go back
- Michelle (2/5): - We unfortunately arrived on the day of lockdown and were not allowed to enter the premises. That wasn’t the problem, getting our money back was! Don’t ever use Expedia and the owners had to be continually chased for my refund. Very disappointing.
- Kevin (8/5): - Very nice room, clean and good meal to be had in the restaurant
- Hans (8/5): - Room was nice, the staff were friendly and the dining room food was excellent
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a comfortable room. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed in the Red Truck out the back for something different. It was comfortable and had everything we needed with easy access to the hotel for meals.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property is quirky..I mean staying a red or green truck as it’s front is different..u open your eyes to mountains as that’s what your bed faces..It also has the best pub attached or near stay.
I wish there was a mirror inside room , a microwave especially if you have kids you need one and maybe if the bathroom was attached than keep going to other side but it’s all right.
Overall a lovely place
- Quentin (10/5): - Unique comfortable accomodation.
Very welcoming and helpful staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Classic old building
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great and quite unique place to stay upstairs at an old hotel, done up beautifully, rooms very comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good position.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A lovely old country pub. The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. The bar was cosy with a warm fire and the restaurant food was good. It was a very cold night so we were disappointed that the air conditioner worked but provided no actual heat. There were also lots of light bulbs missing making the room darker than necessary.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place has loads of character with the building dating from the 1850s. The room was clean and large with a large and modern bathroom. We had one of the front rooms with the balcony and a view down the main street. We had a comfortable bed and the place was very quiet at night. The public bar and restaurant is very atmospheric with excellent meals and quick service. Parking right out the front on the street. The only negative was the self serve breakfast in a small kitchen at the back was very limited. Go to the cafe in the service station down the road for better fare.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Sensational hospitality and true old fashioned service. Well done Nadine. We will see you again and again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What's not to love about old world charm. Country pubs are the best. The meal was awesome, Nadine, the host/owner was lovely and accommodating. The room was cosy, the bed comfortable and it all came with a modern ensuite bathroom.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great pub stay. Good room, great bed and really good bathroom. Loved the vibe in the pub and dining room. Good meals - and the Dark Side of the Moon Shiraz was perfect for the eclipse of the moon!!! Lovely fire
Only downside to pub stays are the stairs after walking Mt Remarkable!!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Check in was lax, but OK. The room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned. The carpet definitely had not seen a vacuum cleaner! The room we had boasted a view of Mt Remarkable, which was true, though obscured by cobwebs. The blind could not be raised as the cords were stuck. The cobwebs and view could only be seen after the blind was wedged half-way up. The bathroom was fine, although the window sill, where the hair dryer rested was thick with dust. Quality control was lacking, which was a shame as these impressions are lasting, especially considering the tariff, for which you expect more.
On-line details regarding the accommodation indicated a refrigerator, tea/coffee making facilities and a kitchenette. It was unclear, however, that these facilities are shared and inconvenient. Supplies for these, including breakfast provisions, were well stocked when we arrived, but were not replenished for our second night. Again, there was lack of detail/quality control here.
For the price, we expected our room to be serviced, but as with the lack of vacuum cleaning, this was non-existent.
The main saving grace was the attached pub and restaurant, although heating on two cold nights was minimal - patrons were seated in outdoor attire. The food was good, hearty pub fare, which was served quickly.
Will not be staying here again, but may use the pub. Overall it's only 2.5/5 for us. Our experiences make it difficult to recommend it to anyone, bed was comfy though.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location, being within walking distance to both bushwalking routes as well as a magnificent cafe met our plans.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location and excellent friendly and helpful staff. Pub accomodation clean and fairly modern. Pub food - fish and chips great, veggie stack awful.
- Robert (10/5): Lovely country hotel - Great hotel in the beautiful little town of Melrose.
- John (10/5): - Great hotel, lots of characters, you wish the walls could talk!!
- Collin (10/5): North Star - Great gem in small Aussie town. Clean and friendly
- Vanessa (10/5): - This is such a great place to stay and quiet. We couldn’t get the air conditioner o heat and it was difficult to wash dishes in the bathroom sink but don’t let that stop you from booking.
- Paul (10/5): orth Star pub - Lovely original rustic pub.
Very good service and such friendly people.
- Lenny (8/5): - Good country pub feel. Staff seemed a bit under pressure
- Duncan (8/5): - The red and green trucks were great, just needed a cover over the top and side of the walkway to the bathroom. The food at the pub was very good, you'll struggle to find better at a pub.
- John (8/5): - The staff were very helpful getting us in. The bed was comfy and the shower was hot and strong. A few things didn't work and needed fixing. The public areas are untidy and messy. If it is supposed to be rustic charm, it has missed the mark.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Our accommodation in the green truck. Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location. Entrance to rooms very untidy. No housekeeping for more than one night stay. Communal tea and coffee area not maintained. Wifi included in cost but had to request login details.
- Smudge (6/5): - Could not fault the hospitality or the food - a very warm and gregarious welcome. Unfortunately our accomodation in the red truck was disappointing for the money. Note that the en suite bathroom is in a seperate block detached from the bedroom so you have to go outside (a short step to be fair but still out in the elements) to get to it. There was also a loud hum of a motor noise off and on all night. Maybe try one of the actual hotel rooms instead as everything else was excellent
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We stayed in the green truck 10 years ago and booked it to repeat the experience. However it was not available due to ant problems and lovely Nadine offered us accommodation in the red truck or one of their hotel rooms. We opted for the red truck as the truck was the reason we wanted to stay there. However after a fantastic dinner in the hotel, we got back to our truck we noticed that the floor and cupboards were quite dirty and very dusty, as well as the coffee cups and fridge and would have needed a very good clean. Everything was very worn and old and not worth $150/night. White bed sheets however were clean and fresh, so we decided we dont complain and stay for the one night we had booked. But we wouldnt do so again. Dinner was fantastic and Nadine is a very lovely lady, but the accommodation quirky as it was is not worth it anymore.
- Tutu (6/5): - We stayed in the green truck which is a once in a lifetime experience and worth it for a short stay for something unique. The truck could do with some maintenance, lamp didn't work, one of the lights didn't work and you can't watch the TV as the reception is so poor.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a lovely country hotel. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was modern and updated.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Breakfast on the balcony had a great view of the town, vehicles including caravans, tour bus using local facility for morning tea and semi and double B road trains.
Lack of microwave and having to wash own dishes in Hotel section was disappointing.
Nadine and staff in bar and dining room are very friendly, food was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was old but we like old word charm.Lots of History in the Hotel..
The room was very comfortable and clean. The bathroom was newly renovated. The blind on the window was broken.
We will book there again if we come up there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Rustic charm, great food, great atmosphere, warm and inviting
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The overall its 10 out 10 except for poor or no tv reception at all.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - very friendly and welcoming close to great walking and cycling good food and comfort
