- John (10/5): Happy memories - even if for only 1 night - After a long drive from Strahan it was such a delight to get to our room at the Masden. Had a front room with a view of the water. The room was modern, clean and comfortable with some added extras like a spa bath and microwave. Easy access, lots of street parking and little cafes to eat at close by.

We were ab le to stay in a room overlooking the beach and with opening window we could listen to the waves as we went to sleep. The Queen sized bed was very comfortable. The room and bathroom were very clean. Microwave and tea making with plunger coffee available. Very close to shops, cafes and the Penguin Brewing Co. We love staying here

- Verified traveler (4/5): Not a boutique hotel - I was put in a room which was not in the hotel, but down the driveway, out the back. There were broken blinds, so people could see in from the driveway. There was a hole in the bedroom door which someone had done a shoddy job of trying to putty up. There was a dent in the bedroom wall. The headboard was not attached properly and the bed was uncomfortable. The bathroom was not clean. I just felt dirty being there and did not enjoy my stay. It does not meet my definition of a boutique hotel.

The door locks were very modern and felt safe & secure. There was even fruit, small selection of drinks and coffee included. We will definitely stay again if returning to Penguin in the future.

- Charles (10/5): - The Madsen was situated in a beautiful location. The staff were thoughtful, brilliant and accommodating. The only issue I see is the accommodation needed a lift, however due to heritage restrictions apparently this is not available. This makes people with disabilities a problem. Would definitely stay here again, just need to ensure I booked lower level.

- Fiona (4/5): - I booked 2 nights for this property back in November for my 13 year old (considered an adult for booking purposes), as well as my 10 year old daughter. In error, I must have entered her as 0 years instead of 10- missing the 1 in front perhaps? There was a portacot waiting for us which we returned, however I remain confused that the advertised ‘deluxe’ room sleeping 3 now attracted a $30 charge for my daughter to sleep on the fold out sofa & have clean sheets to do so. Phil agreed to ‘waive’ the charge if we could make the bed up ourselves. There was a grubby blanket in the cupboard for her to use- no mattress protector either, just the sheet straight on the mattress. When we folded the sofa out, there were old crumbs everywhere. The carpet needed a vacuum and the fridge a wipe out. Crowding for position were all the appliances in a chaotic corner. Despite dvds to borrow, our remote didn’t work despite my daughter attempting to change the batteries several times. We just gave up on the place. It’s not even close to a four star rating- I would never recommend the hotel & the whole thing felt grubby both in dealings and standard of cleanliness.

- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked the king bed, very comfortable and nice fresh linen, the spa bath was amazing, nice big tv and a table looking out at the ocean was quiet a nice touch There is however plenty of room for improvement, the room hadn’t been cleaned properly there was rubbish from previous guests a collection of cobwebs and more dust than I would like to see. The room itself was let down by being over crowded with furniture one of the single beds was placed rather close to the heater. All in all was a nice comfortable stay and I would definitely recommend to others. Thank you for having such an amazing property to share.
- timothy (8/5): One night stay - Wife and I found this stay to be very pleasant, nice sea view out the window and very lean, only bit of a downer is parking, right outside the hotel is in the town and only 30-60 mins during the day, had to park down the street a bit to avoid parking fine

Check in and check out were contactless and very easy. The bed was comfy and the penthouse was massive and very spacious.

- allan (8/5): Elegant family Stay - Located right in the middle of penguin. Elegant fittings and finish, understated and tasteful decorations. Comfortable beds. Impeccably clean. Novel touch of complimentary sherry, port, and freshly ground coffee. Our room was quite small, but fine for a one night stay, or longer if you are out and about enjoying the surroundings. Highly recommend, and would definitely stay there again.

My only regret is that I didn’t book the room on the ground floor as the stairs are quite steep and if you have mobility issues like I do can be a tad difficult to negotiate.

This hotel is across the road from the beach and we could see the waves from our room. It was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.
- rachel (8/5): One night at the madsen - Self service check in.wifi didnt work.although the proprietors left a phone number to call them, we felt uncomfortable late at night calling them and ended up using the unsecured free wifi of commerce bank. I received an email pre trip describing the breakfast offerings and asking if I had any preferences but when I asked about breakfast the next day, I was told it wasn't included.it would surely cost the hosts a lot less than we had to pay at a local cafe but so be it. The hotel is centrally located with free parking on the street.comfortable and cozy room. A bit challenging figuring out how to use the room key.despite the name of the town there were none to see

Minimal sound proofing - I could hear people talking in their room upstairs until around 11pm and then again at 5.45am until I heard them check out at around 6.45am. Lots of noise from people playing loud music, yelling and revving cars across the road until just after night fall. Strong wifi was great for getting work done, as this was a business trip. I would have loved to have a toaster and microwave in the room though.
