- Nikki (10/5): - Room was old but was warm and comfortable. The best indian Resturant I have experienced in a very long time. The food was delicious, generous and authentic. We chose to eat there 2 nights out of three. The staff were extremely attentive. Will stay again when we return. No lift. But we knew that before we booked and understand why. Its a very old hotel with loads of features from its original build.

The only thing I was unable to turn on the shower taps very hard, they were seemed to have seized up. So unable to shower. Only that was disappointing. Everything else we were very happy with. 😊

The entry is beautiful but has a weird smell. we booked 2 rooms and managed to book the room with the balcony. We expected the noise so that was ok. We were here for a 21st, and it's easy to go club hopping from this location with karaoke downstairs The bed was quite hard, and we were only given half a roll of toilet paper ! The camera across the road tends to point directly at the balcony when there are no cars coming. But I still really enjoyed my stay here

- Ray (3/5): Never to be repeated - Betty Windsor stayed there in the early 50s - and the hotel seems to have stopped thorough cleaning and maintenance as soon as she left. My room ( room 40) was dusty, the bedside lamp didn’t work, the fridge was noisy and the toilet cistern ran constantly. The location doesn’t have much charm either

I was allowed to park my bike off the street. An important thing to consider when staying in the CBD. Room was small but adequate, Included a bath which is always a bonus. Not enough clothes hangers. (2) I have heavy riding gear I need to hang up. Also my suit or my dinner jacket. The closet is big enough but underutilized. Someone's socks were left in the closet.
- John (8/5): Good value, had the biggest room no 35 - Old style hotel, actually QE2 stayed in same room in 1953! Lovely old staircase, the Thai Indian rest was fine to eat at. Comfortable and clean, not much parking so reserve it. L Good for a night, short walk to town and cinema, saw a movie.

- Max (6/5): The Grand Hotel - The location was great. The bus station is right outside. Grocery shops, cafes, Pharmacies all nearby. A bus route direct to Whangarei Falls. Clean towels every day. Comfy bed and pillows. As the Hotel sits above the bar, it can get quite rowdy outside. With it being right next to a main road, you get all the vehicle noise (horns, etc). The rooms are quite dated but do the job.

No one mentions the keraoke at the bar downstairs until you have paid. Was loud but stopped at reasonable hour so got some entertainment.

Es wurde aber netterweise eine Lösung für mich gefunden 😀

The room was comfortable and clean. We checked in via the pub, which looks a bit rough, but was totally fine! The staff were really nice and friendly. We parked outside on the road. It cost $3 for 3 hours (until 5.30pm), and it's free Sat and Sun.

- Mike (5/5): Authentic kiwi pub style accommodation experience- sleep not guaranteed 😅 - If you’re chasing authentic old-school Kiwi pub experience, this place certainly captures it. It feels like stepping back in time — for better or worse.” The only positive I can genuinely mention is that the place has a vintage, old-school NZ pub feel — and unfortunately, it seems the amenities haven’t been updated since that era either. The shower had almost no water pressure and never properly warmed up, making it a pretty miserable experience. The room itself was uncomfortably hot and poorly ventilated. A fan was provided, but it felt more symbolic than effective. I was only informed at check-in that there would be a karaoke night running until the early hours of the morning. This wasn’t communicated beforehand, and it absolutely should have been. The bass was so heavy the room was physically shaking, making sleep nearly impossible — not ideal after a long day of travel. If you’re planning to stay here, be prepared for noise, heat, and very basic facilities.”

- Joseph (1/5): - The staff were great I can't fault them at all. They were very helpful and friendly and when the situation changed they helped again. Thank you. Unfortunately there was a Guest who decided it was a great idea to cause a huge deal at 1am and it ended up involving the police. The staff were kind enough to swap me to another room at such a late hour and kindly allowed me to park my vehicle in a safe secure spot. Sadly I will not be staying here again. It might have been a one off but it just happened to be on the night I had booked in. I am sure many other people have had a great experience while staying at this location.

- Samuel (7/5): The room was nice but a bit pricey. - I liked the little amenities of the room, such as the free coffees and tea packets in the room. The staff were polite and asked me if I wanted extra towels, even though they didn't have to offer that. There's also a fan and a heater in the room, though I doubt Whangārei would ever get cold enough for a heater! I'd say the only real issue is that there is a surcharge added to the fee, which makes the room roughly 30% more expensive than needed. The room was nice but given the surcharge, it was a bit overpriced.

- James (8/5): - An easy location to access town. There was an Indian Restaurant downstairs that was convenient. Clearly once a grand resort type hotel... it is still functional but past its glory days. You could smell the years.... not unpleasant but noticeable.

Room next door had a lot of visitors that where not ment to be there and the women was yelling out the windows at random people not cool at all.some people just don't appreciate a beautiful old building that's full of charm.

We didn't notice any noise from the pub in our room, just occasionally some people out on the street. Comfortable size and short walk to shops and marina. No on-site parking. Need to park on the street and juggle around parking limits, clearway hours if staying weekdays. Not a major problem as we managed to eventually get a park immediately outside each night.

- Rumley (2/5): Dont stay here - Nothing Dirty, had to go to the bar to check in, rooms over the bar karaoke until 2am, no security rough part of town. Carpet on the walls in the bathroom. Beautiful building needs a serious overhaul. Not safe for single Travellers. Expensive for what you get.

A great walk around. - I needed an overnight stay before heading to Kaitaia since Air NZ doesn't fly to Kaitaia. Accomodation had all my requirements. Lovely staff, especially on meeting my nephew whom I didn't know was up in Whangarei from Auckland. A noisy group of men who were staying. LOud voices and a constant banging of something on wood next to my room. Nevertheless I still got to sleep, and had a reasonable sleep.

- Rodd (7/5): The perfect home away from - I liked the Grand Hotel holds Majestic merit that it showed it has been truely long lived in The Grand Hotel gave me comfort and security where ever i was traveling in and out of this building Its location is perfect Its entertainment and food support valuable Though i was booked in for 3 days of leisure i did not indulge in the finer cuisines and entertainment down stairs and in the local beer bar I found i was comfortable to come and go to work at leisure My stay was perfect certainly I will return and i give her a Grand total of 5 out of five stars well done Well done The Grand Hotel for me thats a no brainer and not applicable to me

- Sofie (5/5): Extrem laut, Schlafen unmöglich - Hatte eine Reifenpanne und habe kurzfristig eine Unterkunft für die Nacht gebraucht. Ich habe hier spontan ein Zimmer bekommen. Ursprünglich war das Hotel sehr schön. Das Zimmer war sauber. Der check in in der Bar war etwas befremdlich, aber in Ordnung. Wurde gewarnt, dass Karaokeabend ist und, dass es laut wird. Auf diesen Lärmpegel konnte mich aber keiner vorbereiten, keine Chance zu schlafen, trotz Ohrstöpseln. Nicht nur die Musik in der Bar, sondern auch die Leute draußen vor der Tür waren sehr laut. Nachts ist einmal außerdem die Polizei vor dem Lokal direkt unter meinem Fenster gestanden. Vielleicht ist eine Bar dieser Art direkt unter einem Hotel nicht die beste Idee.
